    Main Characters

Melina "Midge" Amelia Mayhan, the protagonist

  • A Friend in Need: To almost any of her friends, she's willing to be there for her friends no matter what.
  • Alliterative Name: Her name and surname both start with M: Melina Mayhan, and she goes by "Midge".
  • Author Appeal: She writes her very first book call Living in My Sister's Shadow, which becomes a huge success.
  • Beauty, Brains, and Brawn: The Beauty.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards her younger siblings and of course her younger cousin Eliza.
  • Big Sister Worship: She has a lot of admiration for Davina and always looks up to her as her role model.
  • Boyish Short Hair: While not actually a tomboy, she sported a shorter hairstyle in the first season only. Then it grew a lot longer as the show went on.
    • In contrast in the TV movie My Sister and Me, her hair was shoulder length.
  • Character Development: In the early seasons, she was this young teenage girl who had low self-esteem and lacked any confidence in herself, longing to branch out of her sister's shadow and finding her place in the world. Came the later seasons, she became a lot more confident and ambitious.
  • Cool Big Sister: To Bailey, Garrett and sometimes Chauncey.
  • Cool Car: She owns a bright, yellow sportscar compared to her sister's red one.
  • The Cutie: In her earlier seasons, mainly the first season. She was this young, innocent 13-year-old Girl Next Door who lived in her sister's shadow. She sort of stepped out of that cuteness stage once she reached her early 20's.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Her main goal. She tries to step out of her sister's shadow by finding something that she can accomplish something great in her life so she won't live it down forever.
  • Hidden Depths: Surprisingly, she didn't even knew that she could play a piano that well. She's also a good volleyball player and was recruited in the volleyball team.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: More so, she just wants to be great as her older sister and is desperate to make everyone proud of her accomplishments.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: She's the second oldest daughter of five siblings.
  • Meaningful Name: Her birth name, Melina, technically means "bright yellow" in Greek. Her parents kind of expected their daughter to have beautiful blonde hair when she was born and that her name would represent her being a natural blonde.
  • Middle Child Syndrome: Averted.
  • Oblivious to Love: In the first two seasons, she clearly had no idea that Anson was in love with her.
  • Official Couple: With Anson in the final season.
  • Only Friend: For her cousin, Eliza. She implies that Midge is her only real friend because she doesn't have any real friends back at home in New York.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Midge is her nickname, which is what her family and friends all call her. It was implied that she took the nickname from an old Barbie doll named Midge.
  • Only Sane Woman: If it's going to a New Kids on the Block concert or meeting them in person, she doesn't act all crazy or hysterical like Farrah does.
    • Whenever Davina isn't around, she's the sanest one in the household when there's chaos going on.
  • Parental Favoritism: Is her mother's favorite, according to her grandmother.

Farrah Luanne Nightingale, Midge's best friend

  • Hidden Depths: Despite her sunny disposition, Farrah can sometimes be very emotional and sensitive. She's also not afraid to open up about how much she misses her father from time to time.
  • In with the In Crowd: Although she only sticks with her real friends, she would sometimes be seen hanging out with her cheerleading pals.
  • Loony Fan: Of the New Kids on the Block. She sort of takes this to the extreme when she's thinking about them, meeting them in person or going to one of their concerts.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • New Transfer Student: In the first season, she was only known as the new girl in town.
  • Nice Girl
  • Oblivious to Love: No matter how many times Chauncey has flirted with her, she could never take a hint that she was the object of his affections. Midge was so frustrated over Farrah's oliviousness of Chauncey's crush on her, she blatantly told her about Chauncey's crush on her. Farrah thought it was cute that he has a crush on her, much to Midge's dismay.
  • One Head Taller: She's an inch taller than Midge. Ironically, her mom is much taller than she is.

  • Stepford Smiler: She would display a smile everyday while trying to hide her pain over the loss of her father.
  • Sweet Tooth: Has a craving for anything sweet.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: By Chauncey, who would always compliment on her beautiful blue eyes everytime she's in the room.
  • When She Smiles: Again, by Chauncey. He would always compliment her smile by saying she lights up his life with her shiny white teeth.

Anson Virgil Howerton, Midge's childhood best friend and later boyfriend

Davina Penelope Mayhan-Van Buren, Midge's oldest sister

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She was an A + student back in high school and a dean's list student in college, but wasn't outright mean.
  • The Ace: She was very athlectic in school. When she was in elementary school, she played on the girls' softball team, in middle school, on the swim team and in high school, she was on track & field, lacrosse, played basketball for a while and was on the cheer squad.
  • Action Girl: For a girl, she definitely knows how to kick some serious ass.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She ultimately showed shades of this by almost destroying Cynthia when she kept on bullying Midge at her party.
  • Celebrity Crush: Has a huge crush on Joey Lawrence and Kirk Cameron.
  • Cool Big Sister: To her younger siblings, but mainly to Midge.
  • Cool Car: She drives a shiny, red sports car that's very expensive, compared to Midge's yellow one.
  • Control Freak: Whenever her parents would put her in charge of taking care of her younger siblings while they're away, she would ultimately turn into a vicious dictator by giving orders and bossing them around.
  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: During the earlier seasons, her wardrobe choices consisted of provocative, skimpier outfits that bared a bit too much of her midriff, but in her defense, it was the style trend of the late '90s/early '00s that catched on to teenage girls and young women.
  • Dude Magnet: She's known to attract a lot of men wherever she goes, including guys who are young or old. Midge even states that back when Davina was in high school, all the boys wanted to date her.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Penelope, which she hates so much.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: With Farrah respectively.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's not afraid to pull punches with anyone (even with guys), especially when she almost tried to beat the crap out of Cynthia and pummeling her onto the ground at her sister's party.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Subverted with. Her and Midge have a great relationship and rarely fight, but when trying to find out who's the better sister, it would sometimes bring out the worst in each other.
  • Meaningful Name: The name Davina means "beloved" or "cherished" in English, which would symbolize her popularity and as being very well-liked by her peers in school.

  • Yandere: He doesn't want to be with any girl other than Farrah, though that goes away once he starts dating Nori.

Garrett Leonard Mayhan, Midge's second younger brother

  • Always Save the Girl: Anything that would involve Bailey being in any type of danger.
  • Berserk Button: He hates being called a "momma's boy".
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Garrett appears as a nice guy by default, but push him around too much, you'll definitely gonna regret it. Chauncey learned that the hard way when he made him snap in front of his friends.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He shows a lot of protectiveness towards Bailey.
  • Big Brother Worship: Despite Chauncey's poor treatment of him at times, Garrett still looks up to him alot.

    • She was even called "Strawberry Shortcake" once, even foreshadowing the possibility that her hair would become a strawberry blonde in the later seasons.
