The Empire

The Calradic Empire spoken of in the past-tense in Warband is still around, but is in the process of failing. Already greatly diminished from its might of the old days, the Empire represents the largest, most powerful kingdom in the game world- that is, if it hadn't just recently split into three separate parts.

    As A Whole
  • Civil Warcraft: Because of their civil war, it is quite likely that players fighting for the Empire will spend a considerable amount of time fighting other Imperial factions beyond the standard cross-cultural recruitments as borders change.
  • Divided We Fall: After the death, and possibly murder, of Emperor Arenicos, the Empire has split into three separate factions, who support the three separate claimants about who has the true legitimacy to decide who becomes the new Emperor.
  • Elective Monarchy: Ever since the hero Echerion slew the tyrant Cypegos, the institution of the monarchy was banned for the Calradoi, in theory at least. The Emperor is an office, he nominated an heir, the senate ratified his choice, and the people (meaning the army) acclaimed it.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of the Late Roman Empire, a.k.a the Byzantine Empire.
  • Shocking Defeat Legacy: Neretzes' Folly - or more formally the Battle of Pendriac in 1077 - where an Imperial force with Aserai and Khuzait auxiliaries met a force of Vlandians and Sturgians while marching into the Battanian heartland.
  • The Empire: At the Empire's heyday, it conquered most of the map, trampled mostancient tribes and nations such as the Palaic people into dust and assimilated them. At the borderlands where their influence waned, the Empire would influence local client and puppet states, and make them fight eachother to prevent a foreign king uniting the barbarian tribes and invading the Empire;

The Southern Empire

Southern Empire's Banner
Representing an abandonment of the traditional Imperial claim that they are not a monarchy, Empress Rhagaea, who rules the southern chunk of the Empire, represents a group that the only true end to the endless civil wars that have caused the Empire's decline must be ended at any cost, even if that is a king or queen.

    Rhagaea

Empress Rhagaea of the Southern Empire

Rhagaea is the ruler of the Southern Empire and leader of Pehtros, she is recognized by her supporters as Empress of the entire Empire.
  • Action Girl: While not as pronounced in her story as her daughter, Rhagaea still leads armies wearing the full panoply of war.

    Ira

Princess Ira

The only child of the late Emperor Arenicos and his widow, the Southern Empress Rhagaea. Before his death, Emperor Arenicos had been grooming her as his heir apparent despite the fact that she was a wild child who happily spent time in taverns and even fighting as a gladiator - and all the scandal that entails for a woman of her station. With her father's death and her mother claiming the title Empress, Ira currently leads armies in the field just like her mother does to fight for her birthright.

Northern Empire's Banner
An oligarchic group of the powerful landowners and entrenched aristocracy, the Northern Empire believes that only strict adherence to Imperial Law can prevent the rise of tyranny in the Empire, and that the most qualified should lead- those being the aforementioned powerful landowners and entrenched aristocracy who sit in what Lucon believes should be supreme- the Senate.
    In General

    Lucon

Senator Lucon of the Northern Empire

Chosen by the Senate to be the next emperor, Lucon's power lies in the support of the Senate and is the most traditional of the three Emperors.

Western Empire's Banner
Garios and his supporters believe that the People should control who becomes the new Empire, and that there is no body that represents the People more fully than the army. Therefore, the army should be the only body who has the right to acclaim their leader, which, most of the time, means the most powerful general.

    Garios

Emperor Garios of the Western Empire

Ruler of the Western Empire, Garios was proclaimed as such by his soldiers and believes that the people - or at least the army - should lead.

Kingdom of Vlandia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kingdom_of_vlandias_banner.jpg
Vlandia's Banner
A realm of warriors who came to Calradia and then settled down, the Vlandians have created a society built around their military elite - knights - who ride forth to fight enemies of the realm as the peasants labor in the fields suffering the most of this feudal society.
    In General
  • Cavalry Betrayal: Was supposed to be an ally of the Empire during the Battle of Pendraic, but fought alongside the Sturgians and Battanians instead.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Of the Normans in terms of aesthetic and general backstory, but also of the Ostrogothic Kingdom seeing as how they took over the western portion of the Empire and established their own kingdom there.
  • Medieval European Fantasy: More or less the traditional historical fantasy Europe, though trending towards the Early Medieval Period rather than the High Middle Ages that Swadia embodied more.

     King Derthert

King Derthert

The pacifistic and rational king of Vlandia, who is unfortunately too weak to resist the demand of his ambitious vassals.
  • Authority in Name Only: Despite being the king of Vlandia, Derthert holds little sway over his vassals. Before the Battle of Pendraic, Derthert wanted to honor his oath to the Empire, but the barons refused his demand and made him go to war with it instead. During the battle itself, Derthert had a plan to minimize casualties as much as possible, but his barons ignored him and ultimately incurred heavy Vlandian losses.
