A list of characters that appear in Monsters in My Mailbox.
Reginald McGillicuddy
I'll join that Monster-of the-Month Club. Then I'll always have someone to play with.
The Main Character of the story. In a bid to have some company he joined the Monster-of-the-Month Club. Things then begin to slowly spiral out of his control.
- Big "NO!": Gives one to Binky when he tries to leave Reginald.
- Chronic Pet Killer: Kind of since they would not really be dead, but he did turn most of them into fireflies. Not really his fault either since he didn't know what would happen to them and Anna Marie told him to do it.
- Forbidden Friendship: Kind of, since there is no reason to believe that Reginald's parents have anything against befriending monsters, but the problem lies in having a pet, which is what the monsters basically are.
- Forgotten Fallen Friend: He gets over what happened to the monster very quickly.
- Friendless Background: No other children live in his part of town. Well except for Anna Marie, but according to Reginald she doesn't count since she's a girl.
- Girls Have Cooties: Downplayed, he doesn't seem to have anything against Anna Marie, but still doesn't consider her as a potential friend; at first, because she's a girl.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Pretty much the very reason why he joined the Monster-of-the-Month Club.
- Interspecies Friendship: With the monsters of course.
- Kids Love Dinosaurs: Has quite a collection of dinosaur memorabilia.
- There Is Only One Bed: Sleeps in bed with Ginky and later Winky.
Anna Marie Applebee
What's in the box?
Reginald's neighbor and the only other child that lives in his part of town.
- Best Friend Manual: There are literally directions to the monsters and Anna Marie read it.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Helps Reginald solve a problem with the monsters.
- Chronic Pet Killer: Kind of since they would not really be dead; it's implied that she's had other monsters with Zinky, but got rid of them by turning them into fireflies.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Doesn't seem to be this now, but much like Reginald, she too belonged to the Monster-of-the-Month Club.
- Interspecies Friendship: With Zinky.
- Only Sane Woman: Unlike Reginald she read the directions she got from the Monster-of-the-Month Club.
- Token Minority: A little justified since there's very few people present, but she's still the only person of color present.
- Walking Spoiler: Most of the spoilers some how involve her.
Mr. and Mrs. McGillicuddy
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
The parents of Reginald.
- Happily Married: Looks like it, since despite they're limited appearances they are both found in bed reading together.
- No Indoor Voice: Justified, since they're yelling at Reginald when he's causing trouble or at least when they think that it's him, since they don't know about the monsters.
- Parental Obliviousness: They hardly realize that there's over 12 monsters in their house.I think we have mice.
Monsters In General
Some general information that applies to all of the monsters.- Amazing Technicolor Population: They come in a wide rage of colors.
- Best Friend Manual: There are literally directions to the monsters as a whole. Reginald didn't know about it, but Anna Marie did.
- Cute Monster: Brightly colored and very friendly, several times in the story they just make you want to say aww.
- Monsters Can't Keep House: The more monsters Reginald gets the messier his room becomes.
- Metamorphosis Monster: When wet, monsters will shrink, then turn into harmless fireflies.
- Our Monsters Are Weird: Not only do you get them in the mail; when wet, the monsters will shrink, then turn into harmless fireflies.
- Sapient Pet: What they essentially are.
- Satellite Characters: They exist just to give Reginald company.
Stinky
How about under the bed?
The first monster Reginald gets from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. He is a blue furry monster that appears to be wearing socks. Reginald got him in April.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Stinky is one of the only named monsters that appears to wear any kind of clothing, socks. He never seems to take them off.
- Bizarre Taste in Food: Mud pies, box springs and dust balls.
- Metamorphosis: Was turned into a firefly.
- The Pig-Pen: Can often be found covered in mud, presumably from eating mud pies.
- Signature Laugh: Is stated to sound like hippopotamus with hiccups.Har! Har! Har!
- Things That Go "Bump" in the Night: Sleeps under Reginald's bed.
Binky
I won't belong to some ordinary kid.
The second monster Reginald gets from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. He looks like a yellow dinosaur with wormy hair. Reginald got him in May.
- Agitated Item Stomping: In this case the floor, smashing a hole through the floor of Reginald's room. He does this when he finds out that Reginald doesn't have a hot tube, exercise room or a fax machine.
- Cute Little Fangs: Like all of the monsters he's actually pretty cute and a bit of emphasis is put on the fact that he has fangs.
- Man on Fire: Finky accidentally set his hair on fire.
- Messy Hair: If you can call it hair, but it is all over the place.
- Metamorphosis: Was turned into a firefly.
- Things That Go "Bump" in the Night: Sleeps in Reginald's closet.
Finky
It was cold in box, and I got a runny doze.
The third monster Reginald gets from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. He looks like a dragon. Reginald got him in June.
- Breath Weapon: Breaths fire.
- Catch Your Death of Cold: Seems to have caught the common, from being inside his cold deliver box. Complete with a runny nose and cough.
- Garnishing the Story: The only reason he gets to look like one, despite never being called one.
- Malfunction Malady: His cold caused him to cough up fire and set Reginald's catcher's mitt on fire.
- Metamorphosis: Was turned into a firefly.
- Our Dragons Are Different: Though never called a dragon, he's clearly based off of them.
- Things That Go "Bump" in the Night: Sleeps under Reginald's rug.
- Wings Do Nothing: Implied. Appears to have some wings, but is never seen flying.
Ginky
My sore toe!
One of the monsters Reginald gets from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. He has purple fur and what appear to be wings. Reginald got him in August.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Ginky is one of the only named monsters that appears to wear any kind of clothing, shoes. He's only seen with them while playing baseball though.
- Agony of the Feet: Winky accidentally hits Ginky's toe, which was already sore.My sore toe!
- Metamorphosis: Was turned into a firefly.
- Scary Teeth: Winky thought that Ginky was going to bite him after seeing his fangs.
- There Is Only One Bed: Sleeps in bed with Reginald and later Winky.
- Wings Do Nothing: Implied. Appears to have some wings, but is never seen flying.
Winky
I like Ping Pong and pickle sandwiches with ketchup. And I snore.
The twelfth monster Reginald gets from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. Reginald got him in March.
- Fun Size: Became this instead of a firefly like the rest of Reginald's monsters thanks to Anna Marie saving him.
- Lovable Coward: Scared of the dark, spiders and even other monsters such as Ginky.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Being frightened by Ginky causes him to trip over Finky, which causes Finky to set Binky's hair on fire, which causes all of the monsters to run amok. Resulting in Reginald spraying them all with a hose, turning most of them into fireflies.
- Satiating Sandwich: Made with pickles and ketchup.
- Spiders Are Scary: Won't live in the attic because he saw a spider.
- There Is Only One Bed: Sleeps in bed with Reginald and Ginky.
- Things That Go "Bump" in the Night: Subverted, he was almost put in the coat closet, but managed to convince Reginald into letting him sleep with him in bed.
Other Monsters
And this is only about half of Reginald's monsters.
All of the other monsters Reginald got from the Monster-of-the-Month Club. Some of their names are Pinky, Hinky, Rinky, Linky, Dinky, Inky and Shrinky.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: One of the monsters wears a tiny hat, he also wore some sort of vest while on a baseball team.
- Cast of Snowflakes: Everyone of them couldn't look more different.
- Metamorphosis: They were all turned into a fireflies.
Zinky
Spoiler Zinky and a shrunk Winky
Anna Marie's monster.
- Fun Size: Can fit in Anna Marie's hand.
- Walking Spoiler: Zinky's mere existence as Anna Marie's monster spoils the fact that Anna Marie was a member of the Monster-of-the-Month Club and may have knowledge that Reginald doesn't (which she does).
