    Sergei Smirnov
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Sergei_Smirnov_3046.png
Main mecha: MSJ-06II Tieren, GNX-603T GN-X, GNX-609T GN-XIII, MSJ-06II-SP Tieren Taozi Sergei Custom

A Human Reform League mobile suit commander known as the "Wild Bear of Russia," but he's actually a very chill guy and is one of the only people who is shown to be capable of outwitting Sumeragi. He is a father figure to Soma Peries, instilling in her a sense of kindness that took even him by surprise. However, he is estranged from his son Andrei. Sergei refuses to join A-Laws, and is suspicious of their activties.

Voiced by Unshō Ishizuka (Japanese) and Michael Dobson (English)

  • Alliterative Name: Sergei Smirnov.
  • Authority Equals Ass Kicking: He's a really good pilot.
  • Badass Normal: Despite being at a huge disadvantage against the Gundams, he still manages to hold his own and still square off with them. In episode 3, he gets his own Tieren High Mobility Type mobile suit to grab the Exia's head and attempt to rip it off, only losing when the Exia switches to its beam sabers to cut it to pieces. He squares much better against the Trinities later on.
  • Baritone of Strength: Has a deep voice in the original Japanese version and is a skilled pilot and strategist.
  • Cool Old Guy: Not all that old, really - he's 48 in season 2 - but still much older than most other characters. And undeniably cool, of course.
  • Colonel Badass: A Lieutenant Colonel in the HRL and later Colonel in the ESF who not only is skilled in tactics but he even goes on the field in his Mobile Suit with his men.
  • A Father to His Men: Unlike the previous commander of Phlebotinum Girl character of Gundam series, he never treat Soma/Marie as Human Weapon for military. In fact, Sergei actually disagree of ESF-army arrange Soma to back as Super-Soldier for A-Laws.
  • Genius Bruiser: An very good mobile suit pilot and an excellent strategist.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He's a good and reasonable man, but has a HUGE facial scar typical of bad guys.
  • Hero Antagonist: He's just trying to keep his country safe from Celestial Being.
  • Honor Before Reason: Is completely dedicated to being a soldier and always follows his orders. This ultimately gets him killed by his son, who can't understand why he let his mother die.
  • It Runs in the Family: His wife, son and adopted daughter are all soldiers.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Flashbacks showed he was Tall, Dark, and Handsome back in the days.
  • The Last DJ: He is the only named character from the ESF army that didn't join A-LAWS. Tragically, he loses his life.
  • Leitmotif: "Innovation".
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Be it the HRL or the ESF, Sergei dutifully follows through with his orders no matter how flawed the systems were nor how he personally felt about his duties.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Papa Bear is named from this guy.
  • Nice Guy: He might be against Celestial Being, but he’s a fair and genuinely kind man. When Marie re-emerges from Soma, he agrees to let her and Allelujah off and lie to the A-Laws so Marie won’t be branded a traitor.
  • Parental Substitute: Gradually becomes the father Soma/Marie never had. He even intends to legally adopt her come Season 2 though this never comes to pass before his murder.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Quite literally: failure to reach to his own son Andrei ultimately cost him his life.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He very much dislikes the treatment of Soma Peries (and the HRL super soldier project in general for the experieents they perform on children), and hates the A-LAWS in season 2.
  • Russian Bear: He's referred to as the "Wild Bear of Russia".
  • Russian Guy Suffers Most: The poor man lost his wife and his son hates him for it. And then it only got worse.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Sergei is an unflinchingly badass Cool Old Guy and A Father to His Men who cares deeply for Soma, and maintains his morals no matter what. Sure enough, he dies in perhaps the cruellest way possible, being senselessly murdered by his own estranged son during a ceasefire.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Adult version of this trope. Hank Hercules, himself and his wife Holly.

    Kim
Kim is a HRL Commander, and Sergei Smirnov's superior. He is placed in command of HRL's Anti-Gundam operations in Season 1. Kim returns in Season 2 as a vice admiral in the Earth Sphere Federation Army.

Voiced by Kenji Hamada (Japanese) and John Payne (English)
  • Commanding Coolness: He's commander of Chobu Squadron, a elite squadron which is specialty in operation of capturing Gundam.
  • Flat Character: He's rarely seen in the series aside from giving Sergei orders. In the movie, he was assimilated by ELS.
  • It's All About Me: In the series, he is only interested in furthering his own position and rank, as shown when he sent Sergei Smirnov to Pang Hercury at Homer Katagiri's request in exchange for a position in the A-Laws as a General (though he did not necessarily seem to think that this would result in Sergei's death at Andrei's hands).
    • But by the time of the movie, he grows out of this by following the late Sergei's example and he volunteered for a mission to drive the ELS from Earth. It is implied that sending Sergei to his death had Kim reevaluates his life (offscreen) as he still remembers Sergei very fondly.
Vice Admiral Kim: Have you heard of the Wild Bear of Russia?...That's right. I used to know him well. He wasn't just a mere soldier. He was also a man who thought about how the army should operate and about the future of mankind. I've spent my life obsessing over my career. I wanted to try following his example in the event that mankind comes to face a great crisis.
  • Only One Name: His family name never revealed.
  • Rank Up: As ESF-soldier, he become Lieutenant General. And in the movie, he is promoted to Vice Admiral.
  • This Cannot Be!: His final words as the ELS start to assimilate him and his crew.

    Soma Peries/Marie Parfacy
Main mecha: MSJ-06II-SP Tieren Taozi, GNX-603T GN-X, GNX-704T/SP Ahead Smultron, GNR-101A GN Archer, GN-011 Gundam Harute

Bred for battle in a laboratory by the HRL, Soma is focused, ruthless, and emotionless. Except when she's not. As the story progresses, she's revealed to be Marie Parfacy, Allelujah's long lost childhood friend and her true personality.

Voiced by Arisa Ogasawara (Japanese) and Tabitha St. Germain (English)

Tropes associated with both Marie and Soma

  • Action Girl: Soma used to be an Anti-Villain before her defection after Marie's persona return. Marie/Soma is the most prominent female pilot in the series. While the remainder were either killed or retired, she is the only one who is still alive and active as a pilot from season 1 to the movie.
  • Betty and Veronica: A tough Veronica to Soma, and kind-hearted Betty to Marie.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Soma/Marie acts like one with Mileina. When Anew is on the run with Mileina in tow after the former's Innovader persona is activated, Soma goes to rescue her.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Allelujah is her very first friend when they were children in the Institute, and later they become an Official Couple in their adulthood.
  • Cute Bruiser: Follows the Gundam tradition of female pilots getting pink version of Tieren mobile suits as a HRL Soldier, GN-Archer which have more Fem Bot characteristic than Tieria's Nadleeh, and she's super soldier.
  • Death Faked for You: After Sergei confirms that her defection is real and not a trick Allelujah is playing on him, he decides to tell the A-Laws that Soma Peries was killed in action, so they won't pursue Marie for desertion.
  • Designer Babies: Unlike most of the test subjects who were picked randomly from orphaned children, Marie/Soma is a designer baby. She was genetically engineered and bred as a tool for war and the only successful Super Soldier ever created.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • Marie/Soma participated in Operation Fallen Angels during which Celestial Being loses several prominent members of the Ptolemy's crew. She is also part of the team that takes Allelujah captive and putting him in prison for four years. Despite this, after some initial hesitation, especially by Feldt, she ultimately is accepted by the crew if the Ptolemaios, promising she will never leave Allelujah again and helping Celestial Being with their goals.
    • Subverted in her conflict with Andrei Smirnov. Soma/Marie decides to drop her quest to avenge Sergei's death because she knows Sergei will not be satisfied with her action. Soma is still unable to tolerate Andrei's action, but Marie tells him that Sergei is not a bad person and convinces him to understand his feelings, which is effective enough to redeem him.
  • Give Her a Normal Life: After the Fallen Angels, Soma/Marie is legally adopted by Sergei which allows her to explore a normal life as a human before she became active again as a soldier four years later.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Both she and Soma are decent, honorable and well-mannered girls, but do not ever underestimate her/them as she/they is/are a Super-Soldier.
  • Happily Adopted: She lived with Sergei during the four-year Time Skip and is set to be legally adopted. Unfortunately, Sergei's own son and her sort-of stepbrother killed him. However, she lives with her boyfriend and his surrogate family by that time, so somehow the trope stands.
  • Identity Amnesia: She experienced a rather complicated version of this. She was originally Marie Parfacy, a kind-hearted girl who was a friend of Allelujah Haptism during their childhood until she was implanted with the Soma Peries personality. After the persona was implanted, she lost her memories as Marie and became a ruthless and fearless soldier of the Human Reform League in Season 1 and then later, A-LAWS in Season 2. Thanks to Allelujah, she regained her memories and returned to her former self and switched allegiances to Celestial Being later in Season 2. Both personalities coexisted until Sergei Smirnov (her commander who she views as a father figure throughout Season 1) was killed which led to Marie reverting back to Soma. After the final battle, Marie's personality returned and has remained dominate ever-since. The Soma persona only resurfaces for combat as Marie doesn't have the stomach for war.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair, showing she is not of human origins.
  • Official Couple: With Allelujah.
  • One Head Taller: In season 1, she can be in Huge Guy, Tiny Girl due to her height, which is considered to be small for the military (standing in 156 cm). Even though her current height is 166 cm, she's still shorter than both Sergei (standing in 189 cm) and Allelujah (standing in 186 cm).
  • One True Love: Marie and Allelujah are destined to be soulmates and connected (thanks to their quantum brainwaves) since their childhood. However, when he and the other kids try to escape from the institute, Allelujah decides to leave her in the institute because she still needs medical treatment. When the researchers implanted the Soma Peries persona to make Marie into a perfect super soldier, Soma has no memory of Marie's persona and doesn't know who she is, making her unable to remember Allelujah too. After he learns her identity and the truth about her, Allelujah decides to save her from the A-Laws and the Federation, so she will never be used by the military as a "living weapon". After Marie's persona returned, Marie remains on Allelujah's side and is very supportive of him. Even when/if Soma and Hallelujah's personas dislike each other, Marie and Allelujah will always be together and will never be separated.
  • Phlebotinum Girl: A subverted version of this tropes. She know her duty as Super-Soldier is to carry out whatever her side orders her to without doubting about it. Beside this, the Super Human institute scientist or the HRL-forces never attempt to brainwashing or take full control on her. To the point, Sergei treat her like his own daughter rather than a living weapon. Soma/Marie also has no fatal malfunction from of her mental or physical side due to side effect of the experimentation, more sane and able to control herself. Making her less tragic from previous Phlebotinum Girl characters.
  • Red Is Heroic: As a pilot for Celestial Being, she wears a persimmon red pilot suit.
  • Red String of Fate: She and Allelujah were constantly drawn to each other even when they were still trying kill each other. Blame the telepathy.
  • Split Personality: As a child, Marie was comatose and only able to communicate with Quantum Brain Waves. This problem was solved by implanting the Soma personality, allowing her to function. Soma is tough and hardened super soldier who willingly jumps to the battlefield and fights, while Marie is a Martial Pacifist who only joins the battlefield when she really needs to.
  • Split-Personality Merge: Soma and Marie merged in season 2. Soma no longer dominates over Marie and only emerges in critical situations on the battlefield or when sensing danger with her quantum brainwaves. She will also occasionally take over when either of them is emotionally distressed.
    • Though it seems the personalities had always somewhat blended together once Marie returns as Marie still is familiar with Sergei and affectionate to him despite her technically having never interacted with him. And both personalities refer to events where the other was in control as if they had personally witnessed them.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: The HRL scientists' decided to put the Soma Peries personality within her to restore her senses and make her into the perfect super soldier.
  • Super-Soldier: She was created to be the HRL's ultimate soldier.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Soma and Marie could be seen as the two in one body. Marie is a gentle girly girl, Soma is a tough tomboy.
  • Transforming Mecha: The GN Archer and Harute Gundam can transform between a flight form and a mobile suit.
  • Tyke Bomb: She was raised from birth to be a HRL super soldier and came from the same super-soldier facility that Allelujah did. Sergei is uncomfortable with the concept.
  • Tsundere: Due to her multiple personalities - Marie (deredere) loves Allelujah, Soma (tsuntsun)... doesn't.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her connection with Allelujah Haptism is one of the main subplots of the series.
  • You Are Number 6: Her code number in the Super Soldier Institute is E-001.

Soma Peries

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Soma_Peries_5836.png
  • Aloof Ally: Works for Celestial Being mostly to avenge Sergei.
  • Anti-Hero: She fights alongside the Meisters so she can kill Andrei to avenge Sergei's death. She often separates herself from Allelujah to hunt Andrei and refuses to aid the others until in episode 22 of season 2, where Soma finally asks for permission to let her help the other Meisters.
  • Anti-Villain: She's just trying to fulfill her purpose by defending the HRL from Celestial Being and quickly grows to care for Sergei and her comrades-in-arms.
  • Badass Adorable: Cold & efficient Super Soldier with a soft side for Colonel Sergei and later as Marie for Allelujah/Hallelujah.
  • Combining Mecha: The GN Archer combine with Allelujah's Arios Gundam during mobile armor mode to form the Archer Arios. For The Movie, she and her boyfriend co-pilot the Harute.
  • Custom Uniform: In season 1, she was given a special pilot suit that can help her block H/Allelujah's Quantum Brainwaves. She is no longer given a special pilot suit in Season 2 due to Allelujah (temporarily) losing his Quantum Brainwaves caused by his head injury.
  • Daddy's Girl: They weren't actually father and daughter, but she did love Sergei as if he was her father and he was almost gonna legally adopt her.
  • Dark Action Girl: A persistent antagonist during S1 and into S2 until she joins Celestial Being and loses the "dark" part of Action Girl.
  • Do Not Call Me "Marie": Dislikes anyone, especially Allelujah, calling her "Marie". But later, Soma lets him to call her that after getting permission to help the other Meisters.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Both she and Marie see Sergei as her father figure to the point where she accepts Sergei's request to be his daughter.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Soma may be competent, calm, cold, and a ruthless super soldier and pilot, but she is not bloodthirsty, or a Blood Knight sociopath like Hallelujah. When Soma sees her side commit a massacre, she is unable to turn her eyes away from the massacre, because she is only tasked to defeat and capture the Gundams, not killing people. After watching her fellow A-Laws comrades commit the massacre, Soma begins to question her purpose in life, painfully and tearfully accepting that as a super soldier, she must do whatever her superiors want and should not care if she has to murder people.
  • Freak Out: She has a really bad mental episode when she accidentally encounters Allelujah's quantum brainwaves early in Season One, causing her to scream in panic and shoot wildly, accidentally disconnecting an orbital station in the process before she blacks out. In the aftermath of this, HRL scientists adjust her to be able to block out unwanted quantum brainwaves.
  • Good Counterpart: Ironically, beside her antagonistic nature, Soma persona was this to Hallelujah persona.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She follows Allelujah to Celestial Being when her Marie personality awakens.
  • Heel Realization: She has one when she learns that the A-LAWS deployed automatons programmed to kill both soldiers and unarmed refugees against Katharon.
  • Improbable Age: Compared to the other Ace Pilot of the three world powers (Graham and Patrick) who are in their mid-twenties 20 years old, Soma is Second Lieutenant in Season 1 and her age was around 17-18 years old. In Season 2, she is promoted to First Lieutenant and is made an A-Laws squadron commander when she was 23 years old. Being a designer baby super soldier is good for one's career path.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Soma really wants to have a happy and normal life like the other civilians. However, she can't get away from her fate as a "living weapon" for the military.
  • It's Personal and Revenge: She became an Unknown Rival to her stepbrother Andrei after he killed Sergei.
  • Last-Name Basis: Unlike Marie, if someone addresses her without using her rank, she is only called "Peries".
  • Meaningful Name: "Soma" in greek means "Body", and "Peries" probably come from words "Perish" means "Destroy" or "Dissolved". Her name is referenced to her duty as a super soldier.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Follows her orders without questioning their morality, until she unwittingly helps the A-Laws carry out a massacre. This leads to a mental breakdown that only ends when Marie's personality re-emerges.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her hand in the Katharon assault badly shakes her.
  • Not So Stoic: Every time when she faced Allelujah, especially when he calls her "Marie". But she completely loses her stoicness after Sergei's death.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: Aloof? White haired? Genetically Engineered Tyke Bomb? Check, Check, and Check.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Soma hates (H)Allelujah because he brutally killed Adjutant Ming and destroyed the HRL Super Human facility which is filled with dozens of children that will be the next Super-Soldier, following her creation. Which resulted in (H)Allelujah constantly becoming her target instead of her fighting the other Meisters. Even though her true personality has returned and Soma respects Marie's decision to stay with him, she is still cold and aggressive to him.
  • Sixth Ranger: After Sergei was killed, she returns as Soma from being Marie, but continues to fight with Celestial Being to take revenge. Soma has a Co-Sixth Ranger of sorts in Saji Crossroad, but embodies the trope more compared to him. Plus, she was the sixth to sortie (while in Celestial Being, not counted her times in A-LAWS).
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Although she was designed to be a soldier and has no hesitation about going into battle, she gives rookie pilot Louise Halevy some encouragement and welcomes the idea of joining Sergei's family.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Soma is a tough-tomboyish girl, unlike Marie who is a nice girly-girl. Even when regarding her as a super soldier and pilot, Soma has feminine long hair which was never seen to be tied or cut into a more boyish hairstyle like Louise Halevy. She pilots a pink version of the Tieren, and in a flashback where she started a normal life with Sergei, she wears a pink cardigan and a long skirt.

Marie Parfacy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marieparfacy_2.png
  • Action Girl: Sweet and gentle and all, she's still more than willing to join the fight if it's needed, and is skilled enough to survive the series without many scratches.
  • Badass Adorable: Her gentleness can often make people forget that she is a Super-Soldier, with tons of experience in combat.
  • Battle Couple: With Allelujah, once her Ten Episodes Retirement was over. They even co-pilot the Archer Arios and the Harute together.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As herself, Marie is very gentle, a pacifist, and is kind-hearted. But she is a super soldier and still has Soma Peries's personality.
  • Bridge Bunnies: Temporarily took up this role in Celestial Being, before she got back into action.
  • Drone Deployer: The Harute's scissor bits.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Marie is a nice girly-girl, unlike Soma who is a tough-tomboyish girl. Since Marie is also a super soldier, she is still competent to be a pilot and has good piloting skills thanks to Soma's experiences.
  • Irony: Marie is a designer baby, which means she is born in artificial means, but she is a spiritual person and believes in God.
  • It's All My Fault: Because she can see what Soma do to Allelujah within her memory, she remember exactly how Soma shoot his Kyrios Gundam, resulting his head injury, losing Hallelujah and being imprisoned by federation over four year. Marie blame herself instead of blaming Soma persona and apologizing at him after Allelujah confess his regret of his action for destroying the super human institute. Allelujah, however, didn't hate or grudging at her and insist that it was Soma's fault, not Marie's fault.
  • Lightning Bruiser: The Harute is a hard-hitting speedster designed for zero-gravity combat.
  • Martial Pacifist: Marie is nice and gentle girl who doesn't have the stomach for war due to Soma already taking over her body too long as super-soldier. However, Marie still accepts the offer from the others to help the Meisters on the battlefield even though She still needs Soma's help in critical situations.
  • Morality Pet: To Hallelujah. There is only one time in the entire series when he had an objective other than 'kill things in a horrible, sadistic manner'... and it involved safeguarding Marie. D'awww...
  • Mystical Waif: Telepathic and blind as a child. She's no longer blind and ill, but is still telepathic.
  • Nice Girl: Much more kinder than Soma. Like Allelujah, she is not vengeful and All-Loving Hero.
  • True Love's Kiss: With Allelujah once they hook up.
  • Walking the Earth: In the second season finale, she and Allelujah leave Celestial Being to wander the world to try and find a meaning to their lives.

    Pang Hercury
Pang is a colonel of the Earth Sphere Federation's regular army and Sergei Smirnov’s old friend. He later attempts to expose the corrupt A-Laws by leading a coup in the Africa Tower.

Voiced by Yusaku Yara (Japanese) and Dale Wilson (English)

  • Badass Longcoat : Wear brown long coat as replacement of his regular military coat.
  • Death by Irony: He was killed by Andrei Smirnov, who is none other than his two best-friends' son that he even helped to become a better soldier in his youth.
  • Heroic BSoD / My God, What Have I Done?: After the elevator crisis, he enter into this. Unfortunately for him, Andrei take this opportunity to kill him.
  • The Leader: Of the ESF Coup d'Etat Faction. Succeeded 4 months later by Colonel Kati Mannequin.
  • Military Coup: He lead ESF Coup D'Etat to expose the A-Laws true colors.
  • Mistaken for Terrorist: Thanks to Innovator's media manipulation. Most of people (especially Andrei) think he become to this.

    Ming
Ming is an adjutant of the HRL. He fights Allelujah and it goes as well as you’d expect.

Voiced by Takashi Ohara (Japanese) and Alistair Abell (English)

  • Heroic Sacrifice: Lets himself be killed so Sergei and Soma may escape.
  • Irony: Thinks Soma will be effective in defeating the Gundams. Not only does she defect and help after her true personality resurfaces, she also becomes a part of an Official Couple with his killer, her Childhood Friend.
  • Red Shirt: When you’re facing Hallelujah, it’s almost guaranteed you’re gonna be this.

    Holly Smirnov
Sergei’s deceased wife and mother of their son Andrei.

Voiced by: Akiko Tanaka (Japanese) and Nicole Oliver (English)
