    Itarou

Itarou

The protagonist, an ordinary guy whose life is shaken up when he meets one of the five girls.
  • The Everyman: In all routes, whether he's a student or a young worker, he's stated to be thoroughly average and unremarkable.
  • Hypocrite: In Moeko's route, he insults her for being an otaku and thinks about how all otaku are disgusting... while being one himself, acting stereotypically perverted towards "Kurara," and lauding her for sharing his interests in anime and video games.
  • Jerkass: Varies by route; in Matsuri and Mihomi's routes he acts annoyed by their attention initially and has the option to coldly blow them off even after developing affection for them. In Moeko's route, he's downright cruel to her for no reason other than that she's plain-looking and has nerdy interests. Subverted in Ayume and Nenene's routes, where he's generally very kind to both of them even in the scenarios that lead to their bad ends.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: Itarou's background differs depending on which route you're playing. In Matsuri, Mihomi, and Nenene's routes he's a high school student, while in Ayume and Moeko's routes he appears to be out of school and working for a living.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: In the routes where he is a student, he's just a regular guy who has happened to catch the attention of one of the unhinged girls near him.
  • Rescue Romance: Mihomi and Nenene both fall in love with Itarou after he saves them from some troublesome situation, namely returning Nenene's keepsake ring and preventing Mihomi from committing suicide (the first time she tries, anyway).
    Matsuri

Matsuri Jasmine

A peppy girl who shares classes with Itarou and seems to really, really want to be his girlfriend.
  • Death Seeker: Matsuri has always been one, despite her Genki Girl facade. The flashback in her Happy End reveals that she's been waiting to find the right person who will kill her.
  • Driven to Suicide: If Itarou rejects her in her bad end, Matsuri will graphically mutilate herself in front of him until she finally dies.
  • Genki Girl: Matsuri's most notable trait is how unceasingly cheerful she is. It's all an act however, and she's been deeply depressed for many years.
  • Go Out with a Smile: In her happy end, Matsuri smiles while Itarou strangles her to death, relieved that she has finally gotten her wish to be killed by the person she loves.
  • Stalker with a Crush: It becomes apparent early on that Matsuri is stalking Itarou, but it's not revealed until later just how deep that goes. The end of her route reveals that she somehow has been hiding under Itarou's floorboards and watching him while he masturbates.
  • Stepford Smiler: Matsuri is always energetic and cheerful, but inside she's deeply depressed, and she has wanted to die for a long time.
    Mihomi

Mihomi Hydrangea

A hyperactive underclassman at Itarou's high school who hides her troubled home life behind a cheerful facade.
  • Abusive Parents: Mihomi is abused by her stepfather for being the child of her mother's first marriage. Based on her dialogue in her happy end, it's heavily implied that he has also raped her.
  • Child by Rape: In her happy end, one of the things that Mihomi says to Itarou before jumping off the bridge is that she is pregnant, and that she doesn't want to say any more. Given the dialogues we've seen from her stepfather, the implication is clear.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Mihomi gets insanely jealous when Itarou is even friendly with anyone else, to the point of attacking his friend Yukimaru badly enough to hospitalize him.
  • Driven to Suicide: In her happy end, she apologizes to Itarou for troubling him and jumps off a bridge. Her epilogue reveals that she'd previously attempted to jump from the same bridge, but Itarou stopped her, beginning her affection for him.
  • Genki Girl: Mihomi is hyperactive and deliberately cutesy in most of her interactions. It doesn't seem to be as much of an act with her as it is with Matsuri, but she still uses it to deflect from her problems.
  • Slasher Smile: Exclusively in her bad end, Mihomi flashes a wide grin with unnaturally sharp teeth when whispering cruel things to Itarou as he sleeps and then burning his house down.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Mihomi follows Itarou around at school and becomes violently jealous when she see him talking to a friend. She goes so far as to attack his friend Yukimaru just for getting close to Itarou.
  • Third-Person Person: Her defining trait is that she addresses herself in the third person. It accentuates both her childishness and her insanity.
  • Yandere: Mihomi is the most traditional example in the game. She stalks Itarou at school, tries to convince him that everyone but her is his enemy, attacks his friend Yukimaru severely enough to put him in the hospital, and in her bad end, she burns Itarou's house down with him inside due to his perceived rejection.
    Ayume

Ayume Daffodil/Ayume Kuradori

An up-and-coming actress who frequents the same bar as Itarou and has long been the subject of his distant crush.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her epilogue shows that when she was a child, her entire family was murdered. She was the one to discover them dead, and this irreparably broke her psyche and gave her an obsession with murder.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: In the Remake, Ayume murders her ex-boyfriend midway through her Route.
  • Serial Killer:
    • Ayume turns out to have murdered her ex-boyfriend and kills Itarou in both of her endings. In her happy end, she elaborates on how much she loves torturing and killing men, suggesting that she's done more than just the two murders and definitely intends to do more.
    • Revised in the Remake, where Ayume killed her ex-boyfriend out of frustration after trying to rekindle her relationship with him, and then Itarou to tie up loose ends.
  • Slasher Smile: When her true nature is revealed, Ayume gives Itarou a wide, manic grin while killing him and ranting about how much she enjoys it.
    Moeko

Moeko Ivy

Itarou's coworker at a factory. On the surface a withdrawn woman whom he disdains, she seems to be hiding another side of her personality.
  • Becoming the Mask: After entering a relationship with Itarou as "Kurara," Moeko begins to question which persona is the real her, as she is spending so much time pretending to be someone else in order to have Itarou's affection.
  • Driven to Suicide: In both her endings, Moeko ends up taking her own life. In her happy end, after Itarou accepts her for who she is, she changes back into her "Kurara" costume, and she and Itarou jump to their deaths together in what seems to be a shared delusion. In her bad end, she comes to his house after his rejection and kills him and then herself.
  • Go Out with a Smile: In her happy end epilogue, Moeko thanks Itarou for giving her life meaning, while dying next to him after jumping from her window.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: "Kurara" is obviously just Moeko in a costume. For some reason, Itarou doesn't realize this until she tells him.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Itarou constantly thinks about (and can say to her face) how ugly he finds Moeko, but her plainness is mostly the effect of her glasses, unflattering clothes, and shy personality. When she dresses up, she's very attractive.
  • Shrinking Violet: Moeko is said to almost entirely keep to herself and barely interacts with her coworkers. When she does speak to Itarou, she frequently stutters and apologizes for bothering him.
  • Together in Death: Both of Moeko's endings have her and Itarou dying together, and her epilogue suggests that this is her ultimate wish.
    Nenene

Nenene Anemone

A wealthy young woman who develops an affection for Itarou after a chance meeting one day.
  • Arranged Marriage: Nenene is stuck in one. She doesn't appreciate it, and tries to get Itarou to elope with her. It doesn't end well no matter what you choose.
  • Driven to Suicide: When Itarou refuses to elope with her in her happy end, Nenene calmly bids him farewell and then shoots herself in order to get out of her arranged marriage.
  • Go Out with a Smile: Nenene has a peaceful smile on her face after shooting herself in her happy end, expressing that she is going to see her mother in the afterlife.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Nenene is an elegant upper-class young woman and the most traditionally girly of the love interests; her hair, eyes, and associated symbolic flower are all shades of purple.
  • Missing Mom: Nenene's mother passed away when she was young. Itarou wins her affection by finding and returning a diamond ring that her mother gave to her.
  • Serial Killer: In Nenene's bad end, she became one after killing the upperclassmen who bullied Itarou.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Even before they are actually romantically involved, Nenene vows that anyone who hurts or troubles Itarou will receive retribution by her hand. She follows through by murdering his bullies one by one.
