Kai and TurboMan

Lan Hikari's Hero-Worshipper in chief, this young boy has been idolizing his hero as far back as Mega Man Battle Network 1—Kai was one of the onlookers trapped on the bus during the terrorist incident in DenTown (that's the ColorMan scenario, for those of you playing along at home).

A year younger than Lan and thus cut off from any real opportunity to meet his hero, Kai is hyped to enter the Battle Chip GP to get a chance at finally introducing himself—and when they finally do, he soon convinces himself that Lan is on the trail of yet another criminal plot.

Kai is the operator of TurboMan.EXE.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: TurboMan looks like a car, and Kai dresses like a mechanic.
  • Birds of a Feather: Kai and TurboMan are both very similar in personality and attitude, though TurboMan is slightly more responsible and focused.
  • Can't Catch Up: Zigzagged. During the early part of Kai's story, Lan is consistently one whole tournament block ahead of him, but by Class A, Lan was shut out of the tournament by Chaud, letting Kai overtake him unknowingly.
  • Flashback Fail: Kai's memories of Lan rescuing the bus from Mega Man Battle Network 1 feature Lan being much more triumphant and inspiring than anyone who's played Battle Network 1 will remember.
  • The Gimmick: TurboMan is a walking, talking dragster, and Kai is his mechanic.
  • Hero-Worshipper: For Lan and MegaMan.EXE after being saved by them. He's been apparently using honorifics for Lan for half a year before the story starts, so much so that Lan has to tell him to quit it when they actually meet.
  • Idiot Hair: Fittingly enough for the little goofball, Kai has a massive cowlick sticking up out of the top of his head.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He praises Yai as merely a "good kid" when she comes to fetch him and explain the tournament, despite the fact that she's the host and sponsor of the whole tournament. Yai thinks it's cute and takes it in stride.
  • Keet: Excitable, energetic, impulsive, and the youngest of the Battle Chip Challenge Player Characters, being a year under Lan. Mayl explicitly describes him as like Lan's little brother.
  • Mirror Character: The WWW Operator is childish, goofy, considers himself an aspiring hero (of the underworld), and is just as delusional about the return of the WWW as Kai is about his secret mission. Kai is driven to be a hero alongside his own hero, while the operator wants to face down his arch-enemy.
  • No Sense of Direction: Kai and TurboMan have a dickens of a time trying to find their tournament destinations.
  • Remember the New Guy?: In Mega Man Battle Network 1, the ColorMan scenario reaches its finale when Ms. Madd tries to punish Lan for interfering by hijacking the bus with Lan's friend Mayl on it and rigging it to explode. Kai, as it turns out, was also on that bus.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Kai's impression that there's an evil plot is mostly his own assumption following from learning that Lan fights bad guys, an illusion Lan stokes in order to not disappoint his fan. (As it turns out, there *is* a plot and Kai was correct from the start).
  • Skewed Priorities: Kai's Establishing Character Moment during the flashback at the start of his story features him trapped aboard the hacked bus from Mega Man Battle Network 1, lamenting all the video games he won't get to play.
  • Theory Tunnel Vision: When Kai hears from Mayl and Yai that Lan defeated the WWW and Gospel, he convinces himself that a hero like Lan's presence must mean there's an evil plot afoot. Depending on whose story is being played, Lan either shuts it down before it gets out of hand or does the exact opposite.
  • A True Hero: By Class Y, Kai and TurboMan are champing at the bit to capture bad guys by themselves and become heroes in their own right, so Mr. Famous takes the opportunity to teach them that a real hero doesn't just capture bad guys but also protects the peace.
  • Verbal Tic: "Aiya!" he says, whenever he gets very excited or nervous.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Discussed. In Mayl's story, Kai panics slightly, not knowing how A True Hero acts in a competition against girl-navis. In later rounds, he's gotten over it and is ready to fight.

TurboMan.EXE

Kai's NetNavi, and the race-car to his mechanic. These two Birds of a Feather have a shared admiration for Lan and MegaMan and aspire to be heroes just like them.

While TurboMan isn't quite as hopped up as his Operator, he has a tendency to get ahead of himself and to give himself the odd false start.

Mary and Ring

A Foreign Exchange Student from Netopia who is homestaying at Yai's place. Due to her Delicate and Sickly condition, Mary has grown up alone and isolated and is often left watching classmates run by on the sidelines. This changes when Yai, host of the Battle Chip GP, invites her to meet some friends of hers.

While shy to start with, Mary quickly finds she likes associating with Lan and his friends. But what really strikes her is a chance encounter with Chaud, whom Lan describes as something of a friend despite them not hanging out together—the notion of being friends while not spending time together piques Mary's curiosity.

Mary is the Operator of Ring.EXE.
  • Blatant Lies: When Yai asks her if she's made any friends after a week of homestay, Mary gives a half-hearted "yeah", only for Ring to complain that Mary's always all alone and it's no fun at all.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Is half-Netopian and half-Electopian.
  • Character Development: At the start of her story, Mary is resigned to her fate being Delicate and Sickly and alone, but as she meets Lan and then Chaud (and as Ring keeps dragging her and Chaud together), Mary develops a curiosity about friendship (especially friendship-at-a-distance). As she participates in the tournament, Mary grows more confident and shows more initiative, and being abandoned by Ring reveals to Mary how much she really hates being alone. Ultimately, Mary decides to test her newfound confidence and her bond with Ring against Lan and MegaMan.
  • Delicate and Sickly: Mary has a health problem that prevents her from running and doing hard exercise; Mary and Ring are introduced at the start of Mary's story doing maintenance on her pacemaker.
  • Divided We Fall: Ring is too willful for a Delicate and Sickly girl like Mary to discipline or control, which leads them to resent each other. Things appear to take a turn for the better during the postgame tournaments.
  • Foil: Ring is an extroverted Go-Getter Girl, while Mary is introverted and painfully shy.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: She is from Netopia, and temporarily becomes a student in Electopia's ACDC Elementary.
  • Friendless Background: Mary's condition and resulting shyness have unfortunately denied her much opportunity to make friends. When Yai introduces Mary to Lan, Mayl, and Dex, Mary gets the giggles, as she's never talked to so many people at once, and it's made her quite happy. Later on when Dex asks her to introduce them to her Netopian friends, she explains that they are the first friends she's been able to talk to so much.
  • Inner Monologue: At the start of her story, Mary is distracted by the sight of her classmates rushing off to register for the tournament; she ends up so lost in her thoughts that she doesn't notice Ring's presence until Ring shouts and frightens her.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine
  • Not Disabled in VR: Downplayed. Mary's weak constitution means she can't be physically active, but she can net-battle just as well as anybody else.
  • Not So Similar: When Chaud reunites Mary with Ring, Ring protests that she thought Mary liked to be alone (i.e., like Chaud), which provokes Mary to declare she really hates it.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Ring dragging Chaud and Mary together again and again gives Chaud a chance to show a softer, more sympathetic side (albeit still an emotionally-distant one) and opportunities to Pet the Dog with regard to Mary.
    • Ring teases Mary for being scared of the Class X tournament setting by begging an imaginary ProtoMan to come save them. When Lan and his friends arrive, Mary asks about Chaud's whereabouts; Mayl immediately asks if she wants Chaud to attend. After registering for the Class X tournament, Mary sends Chaud an e-mail to express her gratitude and wistful sadness that Chaud couldn't attend, and she officially declares herself and Chaud to be friends.
    • Prior to the Class Y tournament, Chaud specifically asks Mr. Famous to explain the true purpose of the tournament to Mary, who is an outsider to the goings-on. Judging from his reactions in Class Z, he was trying to protect her by scaring her away, leaving him nonplussed when he discovers her presence and frustrated when Mr. Famous supports her participation.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Zigzagged. Mary has distant relationship with her very busy father—the first taste we get of his personality is a brusque e-mail explaining that his work will be finished faster than expected, and he'll be returning to Netopia soon, which means that Mary will also have to leave the country to go home and see him. On the other hand, at the end of Mary's story, she receives a second e-mail from her father explaining his already moved on to new work and can't come home, which means Mary gets to stay in Electopia with all of her new friends.
  • With Friends Like These...: Mary and Ring don't get along at all, despite being Op and Navi.

Ring.EXE

Mary Towa's NetNavi. Fed up with Mary's lonesome and introverted ways, Ring takes it upon herself to force Mary out of her shell. Despite supposedly trying to help her Operator, it soon becomes clear that this Navi is fueled by a desire for stimulation and celebrity.

Not helping things is the fact that Ring has no scruples to speak of, which gives her a certain disregard for the truth....
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Outside of Mary's storyline, Ring's Boss Battle and Navi chip are reserved for the HackersNet Free Battle after the main campaign.
  • Alternate Self: Ring is the Battle Network counterpart of Ring Man from Mega Man 4.
  • Armored But Frail: Like most Fragile Speedster Navis in Mega Man Battle Chip Challenge, Ring has little health but relies on her great dodge rate to survive. Ring has a little more health than Roll does, though, to make up for not having Roll's Healing Factor.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: In the Secret Final Campaign, Ring will start focusing on doing major damage with M-Cannon and ElecBlade, mixed in with some disruptive chips like Zap Ring and Jealousy, which will prevent enemies from using their Signature Move or Slot-In chips, respectively.
  • Battle Boomerang: When using the Ring Boomerang, Ring flings her rings at the foe and they come flying right back.
  • Catchphrase: "Leave it to Ring!" At the end of Mary's story, Yai borrows it with, "Leave it to ol' Yai!"
  • Chest Insignia: A lime-green oblong ring on a white background.
  • Disco Dan: Ring is decked out in a loud dancing costume.
  • Divided We Fall: Ring is too willful for a Delicate and Sickly girl like Mary to discipline or control, which leads them to resent each other.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • At the start of Mary's story, Ring is assisting with Mary's pacemaker when she tells Mary she needs to go to the hospital's web page and get a list of medicine. Once Ring is online, Ring beelines for the Battle Chip Grand Prix signups instead.
    • Ring's Imagine Spot of what the tournament will be like demonstrates that, while Ring is happy to have Mary along for the ride, she's out for her own fun and excitement.
  • Foil:
    • Ring is an extroverted Go-Getter Girl, while Mary is introverted and painfully shy.
    • Also seen with Ring and Roll—Roll gets along well with her Operator and they have a harmonious relationship, while Ring and Mary clash frequently and Ring willfully does her own thing.
  • Gender Flip: Of Ring Man of the classic series.
  • Genre Savvy: As an NPC, Ring's Strong Chip is Jealousy, which destroys an opponent's slot-in chips; this locks them into their program deck and prevents them from any opporunity to turn things around if needed.
  • Here We Go Again!: Ring has not actually learned discipline or ethics by the end of Mary's story, so the story ends with Ring planning to lure Chaud out with another fake e-mail.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Exaggerated to a fault. Ring wants friends. Lots and lots of friends. But she doesn't really value any friends for their own sake—she easily lies to the only one she's got, her Operator Mary. Learning that Mary doesn't want to have friends (because her condition means she can't play with them and she won't be able to stay with them) frustates Ring so badly that she declares she doesn't care what happens to Mary any more and leaves.
  • Imagine Spot: During her attempt to sway Mary into agreeing to the Battle Chip GP, Ring details a scene of the two of them being hailed as glamorous celebrities, "The mysterious Navi babe of unknown origin: Ring!" and "Mary, the NetBattling genius". The further caught up she gets in the imagined scenario, the less track of reality she keeps. Even Yai can only manage to awkwardly walk off while Ring is carrying on.
  • It's All About Me: While she's happy to take Mary along for the ride, Ring at the start of the story is concerned primarily to make her own life more fun and exciting and filled with friends. She has no problem, for example, with lying to people to get what she wants.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As underhanded as it was for Ring to sign Mary up for the GP behind her back, Mary's too shy and retiring to have taken the initiative on her own. Mary balked at the prospect of Yai introducing her to her friends, but had a ball when they all actually met.
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • Ring, who wants friends and attention, is bored and frustrated by having a lonesome Operator who is Delicate and Sickly, and has no sympathy for Mary in her condition.
    • Ring will do whatever she thinks will get her what she wants, and lies both to her Operator and to Chaud and ProtoMan on multiple occasions over the course of the story. When Mary is inevitably humiliated by this behavior, Ring blows it off as no big deal, demonstrating no concern for the feelings of others.
    • Ring completely fails to understand why Mary starts avoiding Lan and friends (because of the prospect of going home and never seeing them again)—Ring's idea for how to make up for not playing with Lan is for Mary to make even more friends.
    • When Ring ditches Mary, she decides to go live in ProtoMan's PET. Judging from Chaud's dialog, she appears to have lied to Chaud and claimed Mary kicked her out.
    • During a meeting with Chaud and ProtoMan, Ring tries to interrogate ProtoMan about how to be friends with MegaMan, and Mary has to chide her for not recognizing how nervous she's making ProtoMan.
  • Mage Killer: Ring's Navi-attack Ring Rang damages the last chip in her opponent's queue; being a multi-hit attack, it benefits exponentially from Quad Damage; with only a single boost, it can take enormous bites out of an opponent's program-deck each round.
  • Magikarp Power: Ring's Signature Move does less damage on its own than nearly every other starting Navi's, but as a multi-hit attack it benefits exponentially from Quad Damage battle-chips like Attack + and Navi +.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Ring manipulates Chaud and Mary into several meetings by lying and sending fake emails to both of them on multiple occasions.
  • Never My Fault: Whenever NPC Ring is defeated in an Open Battle, she'll blame Mary for losing. To hear NPC Mary tell it, Ring never listens to Mary's instructions.
  • Nominal Hero: Ring is a Manipulative Bastard with a Lack of Empathy and a narcissistic streak who lies to anyone if it will get her what she wants. She's also a Face.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While Ring is willing to talk smack even to Bass, Bass GS spooks her so badly she laughingly begs to go home. If she wins, she shakily tries to use her Catchphrase, but Mary calls her out on her trembling voice.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "I'll spin you upside your head!" she says, to none other than Bass himself.
  • Red Mage:
  • Shipper on Deck: During her Imagine Spot, Ring especially delights in the prospect of Mary getting a boyfriend. She quickly decides Chaud is the most eligible option for her Operator.
  • Ship Tease: With ProtoMan.
    • After Mary registers for the Class X tournament and sends Chaud an e-mail, Ring adds her own postscript openly declaring that she misses him and wants to see him.
    • When Ring hears that Chaud asked Mr. Famous to explain the true purpose of the post-game tournaments, Ring is convinced that it's ProtoMan's doing and a sign of his love.
  • Shock and Awe: As an NPC, Mary and Ring start focusing on Elec chips in the post-game tournaments, using ZapRings to stun an opponent, an ElecBlade to deal heavy damage to an enemy's battle-chips, an an Aluminum Stage to boost Elec attacks.
  • Signature Move:
    • Ring's onboard Navi attack is the Ring Boomerang ("RingRang" for short), a Battle Boomerang technique that strikes twice and does Add damage.
    • As an NPC, her strong chip is Jealousy, which will destroy an enemy's Slot-In chips and prevent them from any attempt to turn the tables.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Lampshaded. When Mary meets everyone in her story, Roll and Ring are mutually pleased to discover another girl-navi.
  • Spam Attack: The Ring Rang is a multi-hit move that hits twice per use—like other multi-hit attacks, it benefits exponentially from damage-increasing battle-chips.
  • Superboss: The hidden, downloadable version of Ring (using the code from Battle Network 4), who goes all-in on her Magikarp Power. She'll immediately give herself an Invincibility Power-Up with Popup or Shadow 3, and then she'll start stacking Navi + 40 battle-chips to boost her Signature Move.
