Otaku Resistance

    Otaku Hero

Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa

  • Big Good: He's the leader of the Revolutionary Army.
  • Decoy Protagonist: He counts as this for the war. While it's next to impossible to discuss the rest of the series without bringing up his untimely fate at the hands of Anarchy and the subsequent Time Skip ahead, the one SHOBON will have more of a fight with in the Otaku Hero concept will not be him, but his successor.
  • Doomed Moral Victor: Sure he gets skewered, but he ultimately encouraged the Otaku to continue fighting to enjoy what they want to enjoy, and his last act of defiance threw SHOBON's carefully planned script off the rails.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Knowing that SHOBON's script included him dying with his helmet and said helmet being later burned, he flung it away an instant before dying, throwing SHOBON's carefully planned script off the rails and leaving it for the second Otaku Hero to wear.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Averted: he's the Big Good and wears a helmet, that is inherited by the second Otaku Hero.
  • Legacy Character: Ultimately becomes the basis of the Otaku Hero moniker after his death. Another young man eventually takes up his cause in the epilogue.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: He wears the classic thick glasses with swirl patterns that are typically associated with otaku and nerds in general.
  • Supporting Protagonist: He doesn't really get involved in the fighting, leaving that to the Magical Girls.

    Anarchy / Kirara Akabane

Voiced by: Fairouz Ai

  • Decoy Protagonist: She's initially appeared to be the female protagonist, but it's actually The Heavy along side her fellow rogue magical girls Blue and Pink and the Hero Killer of the Otaku Hero.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": She doesn't like being called by her real name, Kirara Akabane.
  • Odd Name Out: She's the only Magical Girl not named after her theme color.
  • Fiery Redhead: Anarchy's red hair matches her hot blooded personality.

    Blue / Blueberry Ai Kanda

Voiced by: Aimi Terakawa

  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Despite being a massive masochist, Blue retains some likable qualities outside of her perversion.
  • Sinister Scythe: Wields one that can slice through anything with one swipe.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: She will often enjoy being grabbed and trashed around by the enemies she is fighting.
  • Translator Buddy: Often speaks over Pink's "Gobos" to translate what she's saying.

    Pink

Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa

  • Addiction-Powered: Pink begins her magical girl transformation by injecting some drugs directly into her neck.
  • The Faceless: She's never seen without her gas mask on. She even wears it in the shower.
  • Fantastic Drug: Thus far, she can conjure:
    • Pills that make the targets fall asleep while sharing the same dream.
    • A serum that not only reverse the decaying of plastic toys, but also fueling them.
  • The Unintelligible: She can only say "Gobo", and variations of it. Blue can translate for her.
    Kyotaro
A little red demon that follows the gang.
  • God Was My Copilot: In reality, he's a minor form of Origin, a mysterious godlike entity who is simply coming along because she's bored.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Kyotaro endures this many times throughout the series, especially when he gets hurt, abused or brutally killed either by accident or on purpose.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Not an episode goes by where Kyotaro isn't brutalized in some way or shape. Whether he's the victim of a gag or they simply use him for their own ends, the little guy will simply not come out intact.

Antagonists

    SHOBON

Voiced by: Soma Saito

  • The Bad Guy Wins: He victoriously manages to have the Magical Destroyers join his side and turn against the Otaku Hero, successfully killing him, defeating the otakus and continuing his anti-otaku movement. However, he soon finds out his script went off when the new Otaku Hero shows up, challenging him and the Magical Destroyers.
  • Big Bad: The leader of the SSC.
  • Can't Take Criticism: The reason he targets otaku and their culture is because he was harshly criticized for the game he attempted to release.
  • The Corrupter: He pulled it on almost all of Japan, turning most of the population against Otaku culture. Most notably, he did the same on Magical Girl Slayer and Unit-@ of the Shitennou. By the end of the series, the other Magical Girls are on his side against the otaku.
  • Evil Is Petty: The source of his frustrations is his time as a game developer. At one point, he made mediocre games that were constantly mocked by otaku on imageboards, and coupled with harsh words pointed towards himself and the opportunity to create the game of his dreams from Origin, he becomes SHOBON and makes a world where Otaku are persecuted, lose their war, and can do nothing else.
  • Freak Out: In the last episode, as soon as his plans go off-script and the next Otaku Hero shows up, his CRT TV head screen turned static, losing his sanity in fear and shock and having a massive Villainous Breakdown (much to the joy of Origin spectating the whole thing), screaming that the sudden turn of events wasn’t in the script while flailing hysterically to the point of spinning himself into a tornado.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He left his notebook for Otaku Hero to read to taunt him. This allows Otaku Hero to discover his carefully planned script and throw it off course.
  • Invincible Villain: His forces may be pushed back, but he'll never truly lose. With Origin at his side, he can take the Magical Girls we've come to love and make them slaughter machines, and get the ending where he wins over otaku.
  • Meaningful Name: "Shobon" is one name for the kaomoji that appears on his TV, representing a person becoming dejected; the phrase itself is onomatopoeia for the disappointment settling in. The fact that this emoticon originated from 2channel, a known otaku hangout, also plays on SHOBON's dejection after repeatedly witnessing otaku forumgoers tear into his games.
  • Non-Human Head: His head is a CRT TV.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Sure, he gets what he wants--Otaku Hero gets killed as planned, the magical girls are on his side now, and he's still the center of an anti-otaku movement. Origin is just not on his side anymore and won't let him go on-script ever again (rather spectating the events unfold from afar), and his takedown of Otaku Hero only led him to become a movement icon.
  • Title Drop: At the end of Episode 11:
Congratulations. You have now been born as magical girls... Magical Destroyers.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Once everything goes off-script. Also counts as a massive Freak Out.

    Origin (unmarked spoilers
The true form of Kyotaro. A mysterious godlike entity who is the real reason why SHOBON has the power to reshape reality.
  • Dreary Half-Lidded Eyes: Origin, from concept to show, is always depicted with a half-lidded look of disinterest. She claims she's bored and only kickstarts the plot because she thought she could wring some amusement out of SHOBON, but even then she's not happy. The one time she smiles is when the second Otaku Hero and his crew get SHOBON to start frothing at the mouth for derailing his script.
  • God Is Neutral: While she's currently on the side of SHOBON, she had only given him powers because she wanted to be entertained by the type of story he'd make. She otherwise stays out of things, or at least does in her true form rather than Kyotaro. In the end, she doesn't help SHOBON regain control of his narrative, finding the Otaku resistance far more entertaining.

Four Kings

    Slayer

Voiced by: Yuu Serizawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_slayer.png

  • Alien Blood: After a long battle with Anarchy, she bled purple.
  • Dark Magical Girl: Seems to be an Evil Counterpart to the Magical Girls who works for the SSC.
  • The Dragon: For the SSC.
  • Palette Swap: Her magical girl form is visually a purple/black-colored version of Anarchy. Episode 10 reveals she even has her own versions of Blue and Pink, with their colors inverted.
  • You Have Failed Me: She kills Unit-@ after he begins breaking SHOBON's mind control.
  • Uniformity Exception: While the other magical girls have two drop marks under their eyes, slayer only has one. It might be to simply indicate that she's on the opposing side, as Blue and Pink's counterparts have one tear each, too.
