This is a character page for the Madou Monogatari series. This page only covers characters that appear exclusively in the Madou Monogatari series; characters that appear in the Puyo Puyo series are instead covered in those character pages.
- Puyo Puyo: Compile (Major) covers protagonists Arle Nadja and Carbuncle, along with antagonists Schezo Wegey, Dark Prince (Satan), and Rulue, and Breakout Mook Characters Draco Centauros, Suketoudara, Witch, and the Puyo Puyos.
- Puyo Puyo: Compile (Recurring) covers Madou Monogatari III's original final boss Minotauros, Madou Monogatari Canon Immigrant Ragnus Bishasi, and several Mooks.
- Puyo Puyo: Compile (Minor) covers Madou Monogatari I's original final boss Mamono, as well as other Mooks that appear in Puyo Puyo games.
Camus
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari I: 3-tsu no Madouryoku
A classmate of Arle's who helps her in the graduation exam in Madou Monogatari I (Mega Drive) and is constantly pined after by Lala, who loves him.
- Badass Cape: Wears two capes, much like Schezo in Tower of the Magician.
- Taking the Bullet: Will take a blow for Arle during her fight against Fudoushi, in the Game Gear version of Madou Monogatari I.
- Trickster Mentor: Appears at various points in the story to help Arle collect equipment, but there are times Arle must fight him to progress.
- The Worf Effect: While he is a graduate, his attempt to take on the Dark Prince (a shadow of him, rather) in the Megadrive version ends disastrously for him, as his adversary is far stronger than he anticipated.
Count
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari R
A bloodsucking vampire with a taste for virgin blood, and is depicted as Rulue's arch-nemesis. Similar to his cronies (Demiserf, Vampire, and Water Element), he usually appears in Rulue-centric adventures.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: Waistcoat, but it works.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Has not appeared in a game since Rulue's Spring Break of Fists.
- Fangs Are Evil: Has some prominent fangs, for obvious reasons.
- Hulking Out: Does this in Rulue's Spring Break of Fists, powering himself up following his first defeat in the game.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: When Rulue first comes across him, he immediately overpowers her by way of an ambush, sucking her blood and weakening her greatly. However, once the Dark Prince steps in to assist, he ends up on the receiving end of one, courtesy of Rulue, the Dark Prince, and Carbuncle.
- Pointy Ears
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Gains these when in his powered-up form.
- Trampled Underfoot: Following his defeat in ARS, he ends up on the receiving end of this trope courtesy of Rulue, as he tries to get back up and attack Dark Prince, who is currently reconciling with Carbuncle.
- White Hair, Black Heart: Well, blond hair. But the point still stands.
Dark Matter
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari: Tower of the Magician
A dark wizard bent on world domination. Wish killed him fifty years before the events of Tower of the Magician, but his restless spirit returned to her tower during Witch's magical certification exam.
- Apocalypse How: Was trying to cause a Regional type to Take Over the World before being killed.
- Boss Remix: His battle theme? A Dark Reprise of the franchise's normal battle theme.
- Came Back Strong: Was strong enough as a ghost to defeat Wish, who'd previously killed him.
- Dark Is Evil: Was trying to Take Over the World before Wish killed him.
- Demonic Possession: Possesses Wish after Schezo defeats him in his standard form.
- Final Boss: Of Tower of the Magician.
- Geometric Magic: Uses spell circles to cast magic.
- Humanoid Abomination: A mummylike spirit with four hands.
- Knight of Cerebus: Tower of the Magician is a fairly light-hearted game... Then he shows up.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Has four hands.
- Orbital Bombardment: Said to have dragged meteors from the sky to rain down on land before being killed by Wish.
- Playing with Fire: Ultimate Flare.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has glowing red eyes, which people he possesses also take on.
- Red Right Hand: His possessed victims take on his glowing red eyes and his hands appear around them.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The whole reason his spirit came back.
- Squishy Wizard: Relies entirely on spells to attack.
- Star Power: Shooting Star, Black Eclipse.
- Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: He's the Final Boss of one of the more lighthearted Madou Monogatari games.
Fudoushi
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari I
A rotting magic guru who serves as the final boss of Madou Monogatari I and creates a hideous illusion of Arle's kindergarten friends melting into hideous figures. In Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji, he is portrayed as a goofy character with attitude and possessed by Devil for his power.
- Final Boss: Of the PC-98, Game Gear, and PC Engine versions ofMadou Monogatari I.
- Humanoid Abomination: A rotting wizard.
- Knight of Cerebus: While Madou I has a couple of fairly dark moments, his presence is infamous for the illusions he inflicts upon a 5-year old Arle. When you see this guy, you know this version of the game’s certainly not the typical lighthearted Puyo fare.
- Lighter and Softer: His appearance in Hanamaru Dai Youchienji gives him a less visibly grotesque design and a much goofier personality and he's not even the final boss, with Devil instead taking control of him to power himself up, while Fudoushi is helpless to stop him.
- Even the Game Gear and PC Engine versions of Madou Monogatari I give him a less realistically horrific design.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Has tentacles growing from almost every part of the lower half of his body.
- Squishy Wizard: Relies entirely on spells to attack.
Lala
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari I (Mega Drive)
- The Bus Came Back: She gets to appear in The Final Test, but only as a minor NPC.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She hasn't appeared in any other games since Madou Monogatari: The Final Test.
- The Rival: One of Arle's less persistent rivals, but it still applies. She sneaks into the tower to sabotage Arle for being undeserving of ascending to tower...when she missed the exam herself due to sickness.
- The Unfought: Is never fought or even seen in any combat, despite her status as one of Arle's rivals. The last you hear of her is Camus locking her up in the tower basement for her continuous interruptions.
Lilith
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari: The Final Test
A powerful spellcaster from the early days of the Madou world, who fought the Creator of the world but died doing so. She was Dark Prince's wife, and reincarnated into Arle following her death.
- Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: How she is said to have "died" upon using the Seraphim Orb to rewrite the world.
- Badass Cape: Wears two capes, much like Schezo in Tower of the Magician.
- Chosen One: Wielded the Seraphim Orb, which was supposed to pass on to Arle due to Arle being her reincarnation.
- Doppelgänger: Takes on the form of one to Arle.
- Fire, Ice, Lightning: Dark Blizzard, Heavenly Thunder, Flame Tornado.
- The Lost Lenore: To Dark Prince. He pursues Arle in part because she is Lilith's reincarnation.
- Palette Swap: Appears as a purple version of Arle, and is mistaken for a Doppelganger as a result.
- Purple Is Powerful: Her main colour is purple and she is an even more powerful version of Arle.
- Trickster Mentor: Appears to Arle to help her collect equipment to fight the Phantom God in Madou Monogatari: The Final Test, but Arle must chase her through a labyrinth to do so.
Rune Lord
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari S
The Dark Wizard that preceded Schezo. Long before the events of Schezo's story in ARS, his body was destroyed by a hero, but his spirit lived on.
- Big Bad: Of Schezo's story in ARS.
- The Corrupter: When defeated, he tells Schezo that he has already been corrupted by the Rune Lord's darkness and magic.
- Predecessor Villain: He was the Dark Wizard before Schezo defeated him.
- Small Role, Big Impact:
- He only appears in one game, but he's strongly implied to be the one responsible for turning Schezo into who he is today, in both personality and powers.
- The Shin Madou light novels state that the hero that destroyed him was Ragnus, and that Rune Lord cursed him with memory loss and temporary de-aging.
- White Hair, Black Heart: He has long, white hair, and he's a clearly evil dark wizard.
Tenori Zoh
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari: Tower of the Magician
A miniature magical elephant Schezo rescues from Incubus in Tower of the Magician.
- Expy: He's essentially Schezo's Carbuncle.
- Familiar: Schezo's magical pet elephant.
- Fun Size: He fits in Incubus's palm.
- Parrot Pet Position: Once Schezo rescues him he rides on Schezo's shoulder.
- Playing with Fire: He can fire a fireball at enemies.
- Pom-Pom Girl: Cheers Schezo on with pom poms, among other things.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite being Schezo's equivalent of Carbuncle, he never managed to make it into any other games.
Test Body
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari II
The final foe Arle faces in her first encounter with Schezo. An experimental mound of Body Horror, the beast's nature is a mystery.
- Aerith and Bob: Its name kinda sticks out as odd, even in this series.
- Body Horror: Just look at it! It's got what appears to be stingers for three our of its four arms, one barely-qualifying foot, and it's all attached to the walls of the dungeon.
- Eldritch Abomination: Not a lot of creatures are born naturally with a leg of exposed viscera and strands of flesh sticking to the walls.
- Flat Character: It shows up for one final fight with Arle, and hasn't been seen since. Most bosses and enemies in Madou Monogatari gained more of a personality in Puyo Puyo, but for obvious reasons, Test Body didn't get the same treatment. It also only appears in the PC-98 version.
- Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Schezo's dungeon is full of random monsters, so Test Body may not stick out much, but nonetheless, it's the main boss of the dungeon with hardly any foreshadowing.
- Killed Off for Real: While Schezo bounced back from his death in II, Test Body hasn't been seen since its fight with Arle. It's far too grotesque to show up in Puyo Puyo, so unless it gets an overhaul, it's likely Test Body is still dead.
- Knight of Cerebus: Granted, the game has a good number of creepy enemies, but Test Body is one of those bosses that sticks out like a sore thumb to those more familiar with Madou Monogatari.
- Surprisingly Creepy Moment: Assuming you managed to miss some of the less approachable enemies in II, Schezo's decapitation can be pretty jarring...and then this thing shows up...
Wish
- First Appearance: Madou Monogatari: Tower of the Magician
Witch's grandmother and a powerful comet witch. Schezo enters her tower with the intention of stealing her powers in Tower of the Magician, but instead ends up on a mission to help Witch save her and the rest of the world from Dark Matter.
- Badass in Distress: Was defeated by Dark Matter offscreen and later possessed by him.
- Continuity Nod: Despite never appearing in a Puyo Puyo game, her granddaughter Witch seems to either make at least one reference to her, or outright mentions her in almost every game she appears in.
- Demonic Possession: Is possessed by Dark Matter after Dark Matter loses to Schezo.
- Face Death with Dignity: After Schezo defeats Dark Matter and announces his intent to take her magic, she accepts her fate, knowing in her weakened state she is no match for him. Ultimately her death is averted since Schezo decides he'll let her magic recover first and fight her fairly for her power at a later time.
- Geometric Magic: Uses spell circles to cast magic.
- Hero of Another Story: Tower of the Magician starts with the legend of her defeating a great dark wizard who'd tried to Take Over the World decades earlier.
- Kid Hero: In her past. She saved the world from Dark Matter at the age of 15.
- Magic Staff: Her primary weapon.
- The Mentor: To Witch.
- Older Than They Look: Despite being 65 years old, she looks almost identical to her granddaughter Witch, albeit somewhat taller and with silver hair. This is because, like all sorcerers in the greater Puyo Puyo franchise, she stopped her aging process upon reaching adulthood using magic.
- Purple Is Powerful: Wears a purple shawl and she is a powerful comet witch.
- Robe and Wizard Hat: Her attire.
- The Shut-In: Hasn't been seen in decades apart from by her granddaughter due to suffering injuries when she first fought Dark Matter.
- Squishy Wizard: Has no melee attacks and relies entirely on spells to attack.
- Star Power: Meteor Shower, Cosmic Ray, Black Hole, Big Bang. It runs in the family, seeing as her granddaughter shares some of her spells.
