Case Files

    Heine Istari

Live actor: Hiroki Hyakuna

A magus of the Istari family who became a monk of the Church before returning to magecraft. One of the guests at the Castle of Adra.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Primarily motivated by his desire to protect his sister Rosalind.
  • Elemental Powers: Born with the rare dual elemental affinities of both Fire and Water, allowing him to create spells such as lava-like liquids.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Jiroubo mentions that although he prefers women, Heine is so pretty he wouldn't mind getting with him.
  • Magic Knight: Istari alchemy allows him to create a suit of armor and a spear said to be on par with a weaker Servant's.
  • Pretty Boy: Mentioned to be very pretty in-universe.
  • Warrior Monk: He left family matters behind to become a Christian monk, but was ordered to return to inherit the Magic Crest of the family. The ensuing bloodshed of the Church trying to keep Heine as a political hostage apparently caused quite a fuss. His credentials as a fighter are nothing to scoff at, being easily the strongest mano-o-mano Magus among the guests of Adra.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Tried to take on the Istari family crest when it was causing Rosalind problems, but instead it poisoned him, giving him only a few years to live. One of his goals is to use Ashborn's inheritance to cure himself.

    Rosalind Istari

Live actors: Ribeka Tanemura, Sonia

Heine's younger sister.

    Jiroubo Seigen Tokitou

Live actor: Yuuya Kido

A yamabushi who follows the Japanese esoteric religion of Shugendou. One of the guests at the Castle of Adra.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Hits on every girl at Adra, but everyone else finds him offputting. That said, he's a reasonably nice guy otherwise.
  • Sole Survivor: All of his brothers killed each other in a bloody magic succession crisis, leaving him as the inheritor of the now-damaged crest.

    Flueger

Live actor: Shinya Matsuda

A mercenary mage from the Middle East who comes to Adra.
  • The Bus Came Back: He reappears as a minor character in Fate/strange Fake serving as Waver's eyes and ears for that series' Grail War, keeping him informed via an online chat.
  • In-Series Nickname: He's known to others as the "Master Killer". In person he prefers others to call him "Flue" for short.
  • Professional Killer: A freelancer magus who takes up jobs assassinating other magi.
  • Star Power: Has skills in astrology, although he volunteers to do more traditional fortune-telling over celestial-powered spells.

    Orlocke Caesarmund

Live actor: Osamu Kaou

An old magus who was a personal friend of the late Geryon Ashborn at the Castle of Adra.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: The Caesarmunds specialize in Papilio Magia, or butterfly magecraft. One function of said magecraft is to reincarnate in other bodies.
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: He is an elderly mage with a sinister aura and clearly traditional mage-like thoughts, but he's completely sincere in his intent to cooperate with Lord El-Melloi and his past crime was motivated by human emotion rather than mage logic.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Caesarmund or Sizamund? Official material goes with the former.

    Atrum Galliasta
A wealthy mage who participated in the Iselma case. He would later be backed by the Association to join the Fifth Holy Grail War, where he summoned Medea as the war's Caster-class Servant - until she killed him.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Gallista is a complete Hate Sink in stay Night whose presence and actions serve to make Caster more sympathetic. His appearance here gives him more nuance and establishes him as being one of the few magi that Waver can call a friend.
  • Arab Oil Sheikh: Part Middle-Eastern, and his wealth has made him known as the "Oil King".
  • Canon Immigrant: He was created for the anime adaptation of Unlimited Blade Works, but his inclusion here, coupled with Nasu's statement that Case Files is in the exact same world as Stay Night instead of an alternate timeline or even Broad Strokes, means he is now canon to the original visual novel.
  • Dead Man Writing: The final story arc of the novels happens after Caster kills him, but he still shows up in this manner to help Waver out.
  • Irony: He was originally planning to summon Siegfried for the Grail War, as he is trying to get his catalyst, the linden leaf that stuck to his back. The reason he wasn't able to is Touko burned it for ashes as a spell reagent. Unlike Medea, Siegfried is ceaselessly loyal and does not talk back to his master, meaning things could have gone very differently for Atrum otherwise.
  • Odd Friendship: Weirdly enough, developed this relationship with Waver, constantly barging into his office once a week to brag, and they are said to have had an odd sympathy for each other. Waver even expresses sadness after being told of his death.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: While a decent mage in his own right, most of his great prestige was achieved through buying his way up, including his participation in the Fifth Grail War.
  • Shock and Awe: He can cast lightning spells by using his Mystic Code, the Primeval Battery.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The fan translation of the novels spell his name Atram, while the official translations of the anime (both Case Files and Unlimited Blade Works) spell it Atrum.
  • Weather Manipulation: He is able to cause a thunderstorm via a ritual involving 32 of his followers all cast together, though Flat describes it as pretty inefficient.

    Zepia Eltnam Atlasia
The vampiric head of the Atlas Institute of alchemy.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Before he gained the title of Atlasia, he used to go by the name of Oberon. Since name resemblances are important in magecraft, the relation with him and Fairy King Oberon is only known by him. He doesn't have any physical resemblence to Oberon as seen in Fate/Grand Order, but due to the nature of that Oberon, whose relationship with Vortigern is never clarified, this is hardly concrete evidence one way or another.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Because this takes place in the Fate multiverse, Zepia does not become TATARI as he was in Melty Blood, and remains the head of the Atlas Institute.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: He is still a Dead Apostle, but he created a synthetic blood formula that prevents him from succumbing to bloodlust, allowing him to live in seclusion instead of worrying about feeding on others.

    Magdalena
Gray's mother.
  • Abusive Mom: Magdalena willingly offered Gray as a sacrifice to be used as the living vessel for Altria's reincarnation. As it turned out, it was a double subversion; Magdalena fought to prevent Gray from being taken over by Altria, but had to pretend she was even more fervent than the other villagers, even if it meant Gray hated her. Since Gray didn't know what Magdalena was up to, believing she'd become just like the others, it had the same effect as if Magdalena had meant it, isolating Gray and contributing to her issues with her face.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: According to Gray's Valentine's scene in Grand Order, Magdalena used to make her fudge, before her face changed. Gray says that Magdalena claimed it was the only thing she was good at.
  • Only One Name: 'Magdalena' is the only name she's known by, much like Gray.

    Sister Ilumia
The nun assigned to Gray's village by the Holy Church.
  • Author Appeal: Has freckles and full lips due to the author being a fan of those features.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Prefers punching enemies with the standard Church weapon; the Ash Lock, a gauntlet made from Biblical scripture for the express purpose of punching anyone who blasphemes against the Lord.
  • Knight Templar: Rather enjoys having the ability to punish those who do not follow the teachings of the Lord.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Attracted to arrogant girls like Reines.

    Father Fernando
The priest assigned to Gray's village.

    Bersac Blackmore
The gravekeeper of Blackmore Cemetery and Gray's combat teacher.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His family took on the name of the Dead Apostle Gransurg Blackmore after he died 1,700 years ago, out of respect.

    "The Knight" (Spoiler character!)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kay.JPG
Sir Kay, one of the Knights of the Round Table and the adoptive elder brother of Altria herself. Kay appears in the Atlas Contract arc when Gray and Waver enter a simulation inside of Logos React, one of the Atlas Academy's superweapons.
  • Aloof Big Brother: He often teased Altria when they were growing up. According to the material book, the reason Morgan le Fay chose him to be the basis of Add's personality is because of all the Round Table he had the least adoration for King Arthur.
  • The Cameo:
  • The Casanova: The novella Garden of Avalon shows that a lot of his thoughts are occupied by women.
  • Composite Character: Parts of Add's personality have bled into his, such as his use of Add's signature "ihihihi" laugh.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He uses his Noble Phantasm, Camelot Image, to protect Gray from Logos React's rampage. Because he's only a half-formed Virtual Ghost and not a Servant, forcing his Noble Phantasm to activate burns out his Spirit Origin and makes him disappear.
  • My Greatest Failure: His inability to help Artoria in the end. In volume 7 he laments how no matter what he does or where he is, he can never make a difference. He emphasizes to Gray the importance of her staying alive.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In Garden of Avalon on the eve of Mordred's rebellion he contemplates taking his fortune and just leaving Britain behind while he still can. We don't know if he actually went through with it, though here in Case Files it's revealed that he died before the battle anyway.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: A copy of Kay's personality is inside Logos React Replica, aka Add. When Gray and Waver enter Logos React, he appears from within Add.
  • Super Swimming Skills: Noted by the other knights and Altria to be one of his only real skill. In this series, he saves Gray and Waver from a flood by carrying them both and Rhongomyniad while swimming underwater.
  • Terrible Artist: In Fate/hollow ataraxia Saber recounts how when they were young Kay once carved a small lion figure out of wood for her when she was ill. It looked awful and not much like a lion, but she appreciated it nonetheless.
  • Virtual Ghost: Kay is not a Servant in this series, he's a copy of the real Kay's personality created with the Logos React Replica and stored inside Add.

    Rufleus Nuada-Re Eulyphis
The Lord of the Spiritual Evocation department, a member of the aristocratic faction, and father of Sola-Ui and Bram. He was also Kayneth's teacher and future father-in-law.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Or at least Lawful Evil. He is perfectly willing to let the El-Melloi faction be destroyed if they are no longer useful to the aristocratic faction.
  • Ascended Extra: He was first briefly alluded to in Zero, though he didn't even have a name back then.
  • Evil Old Folks: An Aristocratic old mage who absolutely believes in Blue Blood and looks down on New Age magi, he is feared by almost every character, even on his side, for being able to kill them without giving it a single thought.
  • Necromancy: Befitting the Lord of Spiritual Evocation. His many rings and his necklace contain ghosts to use for both power and knowledge, and he can summon various forms of undead.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His first name is also spelled Rulfurus in some translations.

    Magdanel Trambellio Elrond
The Lord of the General Fundamentals department, a member of the Three Great Families, and the leader of the democratic faction.

Adventures

    Shirou Emiya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bdc0dba76d86a2fd5988615bd0e53156dac6c336.jpg

The main character of Fate/stay night who came with Rin to London. He spends his time in London as Luvia's part-time butler.

  • Badass in Distress: Volume 6 features him getting kidnapped by the mafia in Monaco. Rin and Luvia search the city for him.
  • Battle Butler: He hasn't lost any of his skills, and since we last saw him in stay night he's become Luvia's butler.
  • Chick Magnet: Both Luvia and Rin have feelings for him. While Rin was in Singapore, Luvia planned on using Rin's absence to seduce him over to her side. As an outside observer, Reines compares the three of them to a harem comedy.
  • The Ghost: Characters only mention him, he hasn't actually appeared in this series at all.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: When Waver comments on how Shirou is rubbing off on Rin he asks if the two of them are dating, to which she gets flustered and denies it.
  • Mythology Gag: The Hollow Ataraxia version of Shirou says that "out-of-place luxuries like maids" don't belong in his house, which is dramatically ironic given his job as a butler in this series.
  • Noodle Incident: Reines mentions the time that he saved Luvia and Rin when they fell off the Tower of London.
  • Odd Friendship: He gets along with Flat. He sells Flat old Japanese games that you can't get in London, and the two made plans to go to Van-Fem's casino together (before Flat got sidetracked).

    Mikiya Ryougi
An old friend of Touko's who hires Lord El-Melloi II to investigate a kidnapping.
  • The Bus Came Back: Until now he hadn't shown up in anything else in the Nasuverse since the The Garden of Sinners films ended almost a decade prior.
  • Hiding the Handicap: Wears his hair long over his missing left eye, as he did in the ending to The Garden of Sinners.
  • Meaningful Rename: He was Mikiya Koukutou in The Garden of Sinners, but now that he's married Shiki he's taken on her family name.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: What makes him "special" is just how completely normal he is due to his Origin of Normalcy. Gray comments in her narration how she learns about a person's personality from the sound of their footsteps. There are steps for overbearing people, cautious people, and so on, but Mikiya is the first time she hears completely normal steps.
  • Yakuza: His wife is the head of the Ryougi, a yakuza family. Mikiya himself is an accountant for them.

    Mana Ryougi
Mikiya's young daughter.
  • The Bus Came Back: Until now she hadn't shown up in anything else in the Nasuverse since the The Garden of Sinners films ended almost a decade prior.
  • Mythology Gag: She quotes a slightly changed version of her mother's iconic line when she talks about wanting to meet a living author: "If he's alive, he can create anything, even if it's a god."
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She inherited both of her parents' physical features. Her resemblance to her mother is even clearer here with how her bangs are parted the same way Shiki's are.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She has a pretty deep discussion about life and memories with Ergo despite not even being ten yet.

    Akira Yakou
A young girl from the Yakou family, distant relatives of the Ryougi. Mikiya hires Waver to help investigate her kidnapping.
  • Younger Than They Look: She is only seven years old, but she looks almost as old as Mana, who herself looks few years older than she is.

    Karmaglyph Meluastea Deluc
The Lord of the Archaeology and Mineralogy departments at the Clock Tower (taking over the latter one after Kayneth died), and head of the Neutral Faction.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Just *look* at that name.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: As fitting for the Lord of Archaeology, he is very knowledgeable about history and gets along well with El-Melloi II precisely because they both enjoy lecturing about history.
  • It Only Works Once: His Phantasm Overload lets him overclock a magical treasure to make it far stronger than usual at the cost of destroying it after it's used, like the Broken Phantasm technique employed by Archer in Fate/stay night. But unlike Archer who can make unlimited weapons with his Reality Marble, Karmaglyph's treasures are gone for good so he doesn't like to use this if he can help it.
  • Power Crystal: As the Lord of Mineralogy, this is his specialty, making use of jewels by extracting their Elemental Powers.
  • Power Nullifier: Thanks to his Ether attribute, he can disable other magecrafts and spells.
  • Promoted Fan Boy: In a way, being part of a case with Waver qualifies. He says numerous times that he admires him and is a self-proclaimed fan. It's to the extent that he gets serial reports on all of Waver's cases.
  • Self-Deprecation: Despite being a Lord, he has quite the low self-esteem, even stating that his Lordship is the only thing going for him.
  • Trick Arrow: His main form of attack are arrows imbued with elemental attributes extracted from gems to make them capable of Damage-Increasing Debuff.

    Ptolemy
Ptolemy I Soter was one of the generals of Alexander the Great who took over rulership of Egypt after Alexander's death. In this series he appears as a mechanical bird housing a copy of his mind.
  • Ascended Extra: Ptolemy has appeared in group shots of the Ionioi Hetairoi every time they've showed up in anime and artwork, but this is his first real role.
  • Living MacGuffin: Ptolemy's heart, which was supposed to be housed in his mummy, plays a major role in the third arc of Adventures as it serves as the key to the secret magical Library of Alexandria. It and the mechanical bird housing it is used as a Summoning Artifact in a Servant Summoning Ritual to summon a Classless Servant Ptolemy from the Throne of Heroes.
  • Magic Librarian: The Servant version of Ptolemy has complete access to and control over the Library of Alexandria's information and mechanisms via his Noble Phantasm, Bibliotheca Basileus.
  • Virtual Ghost: He's not the "real" Ptolemy but rather a recreation of his mind, similar to Add and Sir Kay.
    • Averted at the end of volume 5, when the actual Ptolemy is summoned as a Servant.

    Sion Eltnam Sokaris
The young adopted daughter of Zepia Eltnam Atlasia. She is on the hunt for a traitor to Atlas, and believing Waver has been in contact with this traitor she attacks his students Ergo and Rin for information.
  • Mythology Gag: Her personality has more in common with the version of Sion from Melty Blood in the Tsukihime World, rather than the version from Fate/Grand Order, despite Case Files also being a Fate World.

    Van-Fem
A Dead Apostle who owns one of the world's leading conglomerates and runs a casino ship in Monaco. He has a history with Flat Escardos.
  • Older Than They Look: He's an Elder Title, one of the original Dead Apostles from the Age of Gods. Despite looking like a handsome young man, this means he's over 2000 years old. Since he's been very publicly hosting his casino parties for a century despite staying so young-looking, muggles think that "Van-Fem" is a character that multiple people have played.
  • Unseen No More: Van-Fem was first mentioned in Kagetsu Tohya, a 2001 sequel to Tsukihime. He's been mentioned several times since then, and even has a speaking role in Fate/strange Fake, but didn't get a design until now, 22 years after he was invented.
