Main Characters

    Xuan Ji (宣玑) 
Voiced by (Mandarin): Hao Xianghai (animation)

A fiend who ends up working for the Deviant Control Office in order to pay for his bills. He has the ability to summon fire and is placed in the survey section of the office.
  • Amnesiac Hero: It's hinted at that he doesn't really remember much of his past. After he awoke from a cave and saved a man from a nearby wreckage later at the hospital, he was assumed to be the man's son.
  • Animal Motifs: Birds, or more specifically, the phoenix.
  • BFS: He carries around a large sword that he can use to effectively fight against other fiends. He later finds out it was made out of Sheng Lingyuan's corpse, to his disgust.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He doesn't seem to take his job too seriously and appears to be lazing around to his co-workers. Zheng Xiao even has to bribe him at one point to just speak seriously. Subverted in that he can take his job seriously when necessary, but he'd rather not put in the effort unless prompted or doesn't want to make it seem like he's trying hard.
  • Facial Markings: When he activates his powers, a mark sometimes appears on his forehead. He also gains a marking over his eyelids when he places his fingers over them, allowing him to see if someone is a human or a certain kind of demon.
  • Fiery Redhead: Downplayed. He can keep calm in stressful situation and knows when to hold his temper, but he does have his breaking point.
  • Hot Wings: He can sprout wings of fire on his back which allows him to take flight.
  • Only in It for the Money: He initially joins the Deviant Control Office because it paid enough for him to pay bills and live comfortably. Zheng Xiao even has to bribe him with money to take his investigation more seriously.
    Zheng Xiao: For every minute you speak seriously, I'll pay you a hundred bucks.
    Xuan Ji: (stiffening) Yes, Baba!!
  • The Phoenix: His burning wings and ability to revive someone with his feathers certainly makes him come across as one.
  • Psychic Link: He shares one with Sheng Lingyuan, allowing the two to communicate to each other directly in their minds if they don't want to be overheard.
  • Seme: Or the gong in Chinese terms.
  • Yaoi Fanboy: He's apparently a fan of danmei novels and has a lot of titles saved up in his digital library. However, he doesn't like others knowing about it.

    Sheng Lingyuan (盛灵渊) 
Voiced by (Mandarin): Jiang Guangtao (animation)

The former Qi Zheng Emperor who was brought back to life in modern day. He seems very knowledgeable about the cases of the Deviant Control Office and takes an immediate liking to Xuan Ji.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Aluojin calls hin "Lingyuan-gege". Xuan Ji eventually refers to him a "Bixia".
  • Back from the Dead: He died thousands of years ago and is brought back to life in current day.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He eventually switches his outfit to a dark suit.
  • Dissonant Serenity: In his first few appearances towards Xuan Ji, he remains eerily calm even as he's wrapped up in the other's fiery chains.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Has long hair and is definitely pretty. Xuan Ji is surprised that such a good looking man was the feared Qi Zheng Emperor.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the one who explains how the events of the past have affected the modern world to Xuan Ji.
  • Psychic Link: He shares one with Xuan Ji, allowing the two to communicate to each other directly in their minds if they don't want to be overheard.
  • Purple Is Powerful: In the donghua when he uses his powers, it usually covered by a purple aura.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: He has this kind of look in his donghua counterpart.
  • The Stoic: He rarely changes his expression, even when he was a child.
  • Uke: Or the shou in Chinese terms.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was once close to Aluojin, with complicated matters in the past tearing the two apart and leading them to be enemies to this day.

Deviant Control Office

    Xiao Zheng (肖征)

The head of the Deviant Control Office and the one who gave Xuan Ji his current position.

Aftermath Response Team

    Bi Chunsheng (毕春生) 
Voiced by (Mandarin): Chang Rongshan (animation)

A member of the Aftermath Response Team who's ability is to influence people with her words.
  • Compelling Voice: She helps cover up sightings of paranormal activity by speaking with the victims and basically rewriting their memory. She later does this to the exploration team's captain so he would end up as her sacrifice.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Her family was involved in an accident that lead to the Deviant Control Office to use the butterflies on two of her family members to hide the fact that they died that day. She slowly loses her sanity trying to figure out who of her family members actually died before she ends up killing everyone. It then turns out her mother and son were the true survivors while her father and husband were not.
  • Revenge: She seeks revenge against the entire bureau because they covered up the death of her family members and others. So she seeks to bring this cover up to the public eye.
  • Sanity Slippage: She slowly starts going mad after finding out that two of her family members did not survive the accident and were actually being controlled by the butterflies.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She's the reason Sheng Lingyuan is brought back in modern day.

    Yang Chao (杨潮) 
Voiced by (Mandarin): Li Qingyang (animation)

The newest recruit to the Aftermath Response Team, who usually has bad luck when helping the others out on the field.
  • Butt-Monkey: Not a scene of him goes by without him suffering in some way or another.

Antagonists

    Aluojin (阿洛津) 
Voiced by (Mandarin): Chen Jinwen note  (animation)

A boy from the Wu clan who was once friends with Sheng Lingyuan, but the two started to drift apart as they got older due to complicated matters.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He was likely barely eighteen when his father died being killed by a fiend in disguise as one of their people and he was made the leader.
  • Braids of Action: His appearance in the donghua has him sprouting multiple braids in his hair.
  • Broken Tears: He breaks down into tears when Sheng Lingyuan arrives at his base as he cries over his father's death.
  • Hell Is That Noise: Whenever he walks, he's accompanied by the sound of bells.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Sheng Lingyuan stabs him in the heart thousands of years ago to keep him from going on a rampage.
  • In Vino Veritas: He apparently gets very noisy and loses all manners when he gets drunk. Sheng Lingyuan has to tell his soldiers to not take Aluojin's words to heart when he's drunk.
  • It Was a Gift:
    • The mask he wears on his head? It was something Sheng Lingyuan had carved for him.
    • He also gifted Sheng Lingyuan a dagger with a sigil of protection on it, which Sheng Lingyuan uses to stab Aluojin when he finds him at the Wu clan cave.
  • Revenge: He seeks to exterminate the entire fiend race, even half-fiends, because one had killed his father while disguised as one of his own clansmen. One even infiltrated his clan and set the burial site on fire, causing Aluojin to become the demon he is in present time.
  • Rugged Scar: He has a burn mark across his forehead, leaving a jagged scar.
  • Tsundere: In their childhood, he messed with Sheng Lingyuan because he wanted to play with the other, but claimed he just wanted to see the boy cry.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He was once incredibly close to Sheng Lingyuan, but matters got complicated as they got older and drove a wedge between the two. Most of it likely has to do with Sheng Lingyuan sparing half-fiends, while Aluojin wishes to exterminate all fiends because one killed his father.

    Dan Li 
Sheng Lingyuan's tutor when he was emperor who always kept his face hidden behind a mask.
  • The Faceless: While Sheng Lingyuan uses Xuan Ji's face to pretend he was his ancestor to lure Aluojn out, Sheng Lingyuan claims he's actually never seen his face. Even when he was executed.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Wears a mask covering his face, is usually in shadows and was the reason behind Aluojin's father's murder as well as the extermination of his clan.
  • Technicolor Fire: He can summon white and blue flames.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He likely killed all of the Wu Clan for the reason being that Aluojin refuses to stop killing all fiends when Sheng Lingyuan was sparing half-fiends.
