Retainers

     Guy

Guy

A retainer in Delaunay's household, and trained as a Cassiline Brother. He is tasked with guarding Phèdre while she goes on assignations and visits Hyacinthe.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Guy met Delaunay when Guy was hired to assassinate him. Delaunay convinces Guy to not kill him, and takes him in as a member of his own household.
Guy: My parents gave me to be reared by the Cassiline Brotherhood when I was but a babe, Phèdre; and the Brotherhood cast me out when I was fourteen and broke my oath with a farmer's daughter. I made my way to the City and fell into a life of crime. Though I was good at it, I despised myself, and wished to die. One day when I thought I could fall no lower, I took a commission from an agent of someone very powerful to assassinate a nobleman on his way home from a party. I resolved to succeed or die, but the nobleman disarmed me. I waited for the killing blow, but he asked me instead, "My friend, you fight like one trained by the Cassiline Brotherhood; how is it then that you come to be engaged in this least fraternal of acts?" And upon his query, I began to weep. [silence for a long while] We do not choose our debts, but indebted we are, both of us, to Anafiel Delaunay. Do not seek to betray him, Your debt may be discharged one day, but mine is unto the death, Phèdre.

     Remy

Remy

One of Phedre's boys, and a former sailor in Rousse's fleet. He is killed by Benedicte's men in Kushiel's Chosen.
  • Character Death: He is murdered by Benedicte's men, on Benedicte's orders, in the throne room of the Little Court.
  • He Knows Too Much: Is killed while attending an audience with Prince Benedicte in the Little Court. Phedre has to watch it happen. And the only reason he's murdered is because he knows too much of Benedicte's treason.
  • Horny Sailors: Phedre promises to throw open the doors of the Night Court to Phedre's Boys if they survive Troyes-le-Mont. They respond to this promise very enthusiastically.
  • True Companions: With Fortun and Ti-Philippe.

     Fortun

Fortun

One of Phedre's boys, and a former sailor in Rousse's fleet. He is killed by Benedicte's men in Kushiel's Chosen.

     Ti-Philippe Dumont

Ti-Philippe Dumont

One of Phedre's boys, and a former sailor in Rousse's fleet.

Tropes applying to Ti-Philippe:

  • The Drunken Sailor: Has elements of this, as he's the wildest & most fun-loving of Phedre's Boys. He's only too happy to head to a tavern to gather information whenever Phedre asks him to.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: He & Joscelin. Joscelin is initially very dismissive of him for seeming to not take anything seriously, but his opinion changes when they are forced to work together in La Serenissima after Phedre is captured.
  • High-Dive Escape: Escapes from Benedicte's men by jumping out of the window of Phedre's townhouse & into the canal. He was able to evade capture, but caught a fever from swimming in the polluted canal water.
  • Horny Sailors: Phedre promises to throw open the doors of the Night Court to Phedre's Boys if they survive Troyes-le-Mont. They respond to this promise very enthusiastically.
  • Hot-Blooded: Is very hot headed & impulsive & considered the least serious & reliable of Phedre's Boys as a result.
  • True Companions: With Remy & Fortun.

     Hugues

Hugues

A young man Philippe befriends in Montreve and invites into Phedre's household as a retainer.
  • Nice Guy: Imriel states that he is the nicest of Montreve's retainers, and the one he likes the most until Gilot.
  • Non-Action Guy: Subverted. From his sweet demeanor one might think that he isn't a fighter, but then Phedre discovers that he has some skill with a cudgel.

     Gilot

Gilot

A man-of-arms who is close to Imriel's age, and who Imriel befriends over the years he spends in Phedre's household. Gilot is extremely loyal to Phedre, Joscelin and Imriel, to the point where he accompanies Imriel to Tiberium despite having some qualms about leaving the country of his birth.
