     Roxanne de Mereliot

Roxanne de Mereliot

The Lady of Marsilikos during the Phedre and Imriel trilogies. She is a close friend of Phedre no Delaunay de Montreve and is staunchly loyal to House Courcel. Her children are Gerard and Jeanne de Mereliot.

Tropes applying to Roxanne:

     Gerard de Mereliot

Gerard de Mereliot

The Lady's son.

Tropes applying to Gerard:

     Jeanne de Mereliot

Jeanne de Mereliot

The Lady's daughter, who is also a physician. She befriends and aids Imriel de la Courcel during his trilogy.

Tropes applying to Jeanne:

  • Healing Hands: Like many of the scions of Eisheth, she's a trained chirurgeon.
  • Sex for Solace: Jeanne sleeps with Imriel to comfort him after he returns from Tiberium. She offers to sleep with him again before he leaves for Cythera but Imriel refuses, wanting to keep the memory of Sidonie fresh in his mind.

     Eleanore de Mereliot

Eleanore de Mereliot

Tropes applying to Eleanore:

     Raphael de Mereliot

Raphael de Mereliot

The Big Bad of the third trilogy and a former lover of both Jehanne and Moirin. He is a d'Angeline nobleman and the brother of the current Lady of Marsilikos.

Tropes applying to Raphael:

  • Ambition Is Evil: Being shut out of any political power in Marsilikos due to being male led him to summon fallen spirits in order to gain powers from them.
  • Big Bad
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Lost his parents in a boating accident as a child. Moirin suggests that he really ought to talk to someone about his childhood trauma.
  • Demonic Possession: Happens to him when he summons Focalor. Moirin, Bao, & Master Lo Feng are able to stop him before the possession is complete, but they weren't fast enough to prevent a piece of Focalor from getting lodged inside him. That piece grows stronger in Terra Nova & aims to complete the possession.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Hits it after the deaths of Jehanne & his sister. He agreed to join Thierry's expedition to Terra Nova because he felt he had nothing else to live for.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Moirin & Denis de Toluard.
  • A God Am I: Convinces the Quechua that he's a god. Having control of an army of ants certainly helps.
  • God-Emperor: Tries to make himself one.
  • Healing Hands: He has the healing abilities common to scions of Eisheth.
  • Hive Mind: Gains the power to control ants in the first book of the trilogy. Seemed like a lame power at first, but then he gets creative...
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His final fate in the jungles of Terra Nova.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Implied by Moirin to be the reason behind his actions. Always second best to his sister who would become the next Lady of Marsilikos and not being especially important in Marsilikos due to being male, his plan to summon fallen angels was so he could gain magical powers.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Moirin tries this on him.
  • Lethal Harmless Powers: Speaking the language of ants seems like a joke at first. It is in Terre d'Ange, but once Raphael gets to the Amazon he discovers he can use his power to summon swarms of ants from the jungle and use them to threaten the rest of the expedition.
  • Love Triangle: Between him, Jehanne, & Daniel. He doesn't cope with Jehanne choosing Daniel over him that well. A second love triangle occurs between him, Jehanne, & Moirin, with both he & Jehanne using Moirin as a pawn in the games they play with each other.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Falls short of being a true Magnificent Bastard so he's here.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Developed a smallpox vaccine, saving the Nahuatl from being wiped out by the disease.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: He becomes much more dangerous in Naamah's Blessing, having learned how to put his ability to speak to ants to horrifying use.
  • Pest Controller: He uses his ability to speak the language of ants to summon massive swarms of them.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: Raphael rages against the gods for taking his parents, his sister, & the woman he loved from him.
  • Rich Bitch
  • Sanity Slippage: It starts when he gets a piece of Focalor stuck in him, but it really gets going once he gets to Terra Nova & is worshiped as a god by the Quechua for being able to control an army of ants. However, he is able to recover enough sanity at the end to release Moirin from her oath & tell her to shut the gateway so Focalor can't fully possess him.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Gains the power to speak the language of ants, which he then puts to horrifying use in Terra Nova.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Is given the power to speak the language of ants as a joke by an annoyed spirit. It's useless in Terre d'Ange, but in the Amazon it's another story.
  • Who's Laughing Now?
  • Wife Husbandry: When he finds out that Desiree strongly resembles her mother, he plans to raise her to be his ideal bride.
  • Willing Channeler: Plans to summon Focalor's spirit so it can fully take over his body, making him all-powerful.
  • Withholding the Cure: He makes Moirin promise to help him summon Focalor before agreeing to heal her father.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: His creation of a smallpox vaccine, thereby saving the natives of Terra Nova from decimation, shows what he could've achieved had he not become evil.
