Main Cast

    Junta Shiraishi

Voiced by: Kengo Kawanishi (JP)

The male lead. An introverted high-school boy who has an odd condition of not being noticeable to other people unless he tells them, his lonely life finally takes a new turn when he meets a beautiful female classmate named Nagisa Kubo, who never fails to notice him and frequently engages him in conversation.

  • Beady-Eyed Loser: He has small black dot pupils in his eyes to go along with his featurelessness.
  • The Generic Guy: As the series' original title indicates, he is like a "mob" character who goes unnoticed by almost everyone around him. His character design also looks rather simplistic.
  • Kuudere: On the surface he seems apathetic and expressionless: a loner detached from society who goes about his day to day activities without enthusiasm. In truth he is a kind and warmhearted individual, who shows unbreakable loyalty and spirit to his friends. Even before meeting Nagisa, he always showed his friendly side to Seita and his mother.
  • Nice Guy: His innate social invisibility would make him a master of cheating, shoplifting, stalking, and many other criminal acts. Nagisa notes he never takes advantage of this and is hesitant to use his lack of detection for selfish reasons.
  • Non-Player Character: Shiraishi feels he is treated as more of background element by his surroundings and his peers rather than any kind of notable person, hence the "mob" in the manga's title. Nagisa however definitely notices his presence and wants to help Shiraishi feel more visible, especially in the "hero of your own story" sense of the word.
  • Otaku: He really enjoys fantasy light novels and video games. Talking about the former is an easy way to break him out his reclusive shell, and his mother uses the latter as leverage to make sure he gets good grades in school.
  • Phrase Catcher: Any classmate that manages to notice Shiraishi, or rather gets their attention directed to him, treat the sighting as though they just spotted a rare yokai or cryptid out in the wild and wonder if they should try their luck rolling for gacha.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: If you're not part of the Kubo or Shiraishi bloodline, he does this to every person he gets the attention of.
  • The Quiet One: He does not speak much (a lot of his lines are inner monologue), which does not help his "invisibility" condition.

    Nagisa Kubo

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa (JP)

The female lead. A beautiful girl sitting next to Shiraishi in class, she somehow notices Shiraishi every time they meet. She enjoys spending time with Shiraishi, teasing him and helping him become more "visible" in the process.

  • A-Cup Angst: She feels insecure about her bust size when her elder sister mentions Shiraishi looking at a porn mag with a busty woman on the cover, to the point of trying to ask him whether he likes big breasts the day after. The fact that Akina is well-endowed does not help.
  • Angry Cheek Puff: Tends to do this whenever she's upset, from subtle to exaggerated level.
  • Cool Big Sis: Greatly admired by her younger cousin Saki.
  • Lethal Chef: She's not very good at cooking, to say the least.
    • According to Akina, Nagisa can't distinguish between cabbage and lettuce.
    • Her first attempt at making cookies for Valentine's Day is a total bust (Akina calls the results "dark matter").
    • On a different occasion, Saki even decides to buy extra cooking ingredients in order to make up for Nagisa's failed attempts.
    • When preparing for a flower-viewing party, Nagisa utterly fails to follow Saki's cooking instructions, cutting her finger in the process.
  • Longing Look: The detail in Nagisa's eyes give off this effect when toying with Junta.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A sweet, sociable girl who takes an interest in the "invisible", introverted Shiraishi and actively tries to make him more noticeable by frequently interacting with him. Thanks to her, Shiraishi has gained a sizable circle of friends and seeks to enjoy every single moment with them.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: For some reason, she's excited about a convenience store's drink dispenser.
  • Nice Girl: What else would you use to describe someone who not only manages to acknowledge Junta's presence but also wants to help him be more noticeable?
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She always gets shoulder to shoulder with Shiraishi and will even sit on his lap to keep him from moving away.
  • Unknowingly in Love: She has Love at First Sight with Shiraishi, but remains unaware of it for at least a year.
  • What Does She See in Him?: As Tamao puts it, "Shiraishi is not smart, athletic, or hot." Nagisa is drawn to Shiraishi's kindness, diligence, moving at other people's pace, ease to forgive others who ignore him, and always doing what's morally right even when no one knows he is there.

Supporting Characters

    Akina Kubo

Voiced by: Miku Itō (JP)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kubo_akina.png

Nagisa's elder sister who has a playful personality. She loves to tease both her younger sister and Shiraishi.

  • The Ace: Hazuki refers to her as "this superwoman who can do anything on the first try" in chapter 62.
  • Always Someone Better: Nagisa feels that she's inferior to Akina in many ways, such as looks and cooking skills.
  • Attractiveness Isolation: Indirectly hinted at. Were it not for Nagisa and Saki she'd spend her evenings drinking alone. She also gives relationship advice to Nagisa about not letting opportunities slip away.
  • Cool Big Sis: Despite Nagisa's annoyance at Akina's teasing, Nagisa still looks up to her elder sister and sees her as a role model.
  • Cuddle Bug: Loves hugging Nagisa and Saki whenever they let their guard down.
  • Cuteness Proximity: The main reason Nagisa and Saki get annoyed at Akina. The more they hang out with her, the cuter she thinks they are, the more she wants to cuddle or tease them.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys teasing Nagisa whenever she can, citing the latter's cuteness. This extends to Shiraishi as the story progresses.
  • Happiness in Minimum Wage: She works as a bookstore clerk.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She loves drinking two or three cans after work.
  • Ms. Fanservice: An attractive woman with impressive curves who is subject to Male Gaze shots in the manga.
  • Shipper on Deck: Noticing Nagisa's growing attraction to Shiraishi, she subtly nudges the two along by giving advices.

    Saki Kubo

Voiced by: Sora Amamiya (JP)

Nagisa and Akina's cousin, who bears a strong resemblance and looks up to the former.

  • Angry Cheek Puff: Does this when she's jealous that Nagisa gets along with somebody other than her.
  • Big Sister Worship: While she's only Nagisa cousin, Saki really looks up to Nagisa and yearns to be more like her.
  • Kuudere: Her quiet nature and neutral facial expression seems like an Emotionless Girl, but she has a wide range of feelings and becomes very expressive whenever family or friends interact with her.
  • Oblivious to Love: Never notices Seita's crush on her. At the end of the manga, a vignette taking place many years later reveals that Saki may be more or less aware of Seita's feelings, which he has constantly been trying to convey to her.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks like a younger version of Nagisa with a slightly different hair color.

    Hazuki Kudo and Tamao Taira

Hazuki voiced by: Ai Kakuma (JP)

Tamao voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (JP)

Nagisa's two female friends. Hazuki is the calm, collected dark-haired girl while Tamao is the bubbly light-haired girl.

  • Book Dumb: Tamao does not do well in her exams. She sees failing only one subject at the first year's finals as a great achievement.
  • Father, I Want to Marry My Brother: When Nagisa, Hazuki and Tama discuss about love, Tama reveals that she used to want to marry her father in first grade, and feels very embarrassed whenever she looks back on it.
  • In-Series Nickname: Tamao's friends call her "Tama" for short.
  • Only Sane Man: When Tama cheerfully announces that she only failed one subject at the first year's finals, only Hazuki wonders whether it truly is a cause for celebration, while Nagisa congratulates Tama wholeheartedly.
  • Playful Cat Smile: Tama has this expression occasionally, fitting her cheerful personality.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Downplayed example. When Tama's not interacting with her female friends, she tends to be paired with Sudo and bickers with him often.
  • Those Two Guys: They are always seen together.

    Yoshie Shiraishi

Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (JP)

Junta's mother.

    Seita Shiraishi

Voiced by: Mariya Ise (JP)

Junta's little brother.

  • Baby Talk: Has childish speech impediments due to his young age.
  • Big Brother Worship: He's super fond of his big brother, wants to be more like him, and becomes sad whenever he's away for more than a day.
  • Cheerful Child: He's almost always seen smiling.
  • Love at First Sight: Instantly attracted to Saki the first time he meets her, to the point of giving her one of the stones he collected.
  • Precocious Crush: He's harbored a major crush on Saki for many years, but Saki seems oblivious about it.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He looks a lot like his mother.
  • Token Mini-Moe: By far the youngest cast member, who's adored by the other characters, especially Akina.

    Unzen-sensei

Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta (JP)

The homeroom teacher of Shiraishi and Kubo's class.

  • Miniature Senior Citizen: He's an elderly teacher who's so short that he needs a box to stand on while teaching in class.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He has a very cartoony appearance compared to the rest of the cast, with a round head, little eyes, large moustache and no visible mouth.

    Yuma Sudo

Voiced by: Taku Yashiro (JP)

A boy who gets assigned to Shiraishi's class in their second year of high school. Impressed by Shiraishi's gardening skills, Sudo tried to meet Shiraishi throughout their first year, but failed every time due to the latter's "invisibility." Shiraishi eventually befriends him, thanks to Nagisa's encouragement.

  • Green-Eyed Monster: While he's supportive of their relationship, he's still quite jealous of Kubo for being so much closer to Shiraishi than he is despite his attempts.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He is impressed with Shiraishi's gardening skills before even meeting him and has wanted to meet him because of them.
  • No Sense of Direction: Tama says in chapter 69: "Sudo has zero sense of direction. (...) First he'll lose Shiraishi, then he won't be able to help getting lost himself and his courage walk will hit a dead end."
