Shinichi Utsumi

A 31 year old writer who recently moved into his grandmother's house. Shinichi became a famous writer after something, that he wrote as an aside-thing during his schoolyears, became a hit. He doesn't particularly enjoy the fame that came with it, but continues to write. His friend Oogaki serves as his publisher and, under his 'suggestion', Shinichi begins to write a romance novel.

  • Alcoholic Parent: His father was a heavy drinker, who also insulted and beat up his wife.
  • Offing the Offspring: His mother, who burned down their apartment, so they would all die, began choking Shinichi. Fortunately, Shinichi managed to get away.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents died when he was eight years old. It was an attempted family suicide, but Shinichi managed to survive.
  • Perma-Stubble: He has a bit of a stubble on his chin, which he rarely shaves.
  • Promoted to Parent: Eventually, Haruka's father gives Shinichi guardianship over Haruka, after realizing how much time she's spent at his place and thinking it's for the better, considering he and his wife are rarely around.
  • Spit Take: Repeated instances, usually when someone is being very direct with their feelings about others or seriously asking him about a potential relationship with Haruka.
  • You Should Write A Book About This: When Oogaki thinks that Haruka's presence around Shinichi could result in a love story about a couple with a large age gap, he tells Shinichi he should write a novel about such a couple.

Haruka Morimoto

The schoolgirl that asked Shinichi if she could use his front-yard to take care of a stray cat. She spends a lot of time at his house, beginning to do a bit of housework or cooking for Shinichi. She's initially 10 years old, but the stories progresses and she grows up into her teen-years.

  • A-Cup Angst: Since she knows that Shinichi seems to prefer busty women, she's sad that she's not very buxom. At age 10.
  • Cry into Chest: After she was the victim of a random assault and attacked with a knife, Shinichi yells at her in the hospital for trying to act mature and like it's nothing. Haruka breaks down crying, admitting how scared she was and Shinichi hugs her in comfort.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Lost her older brother to an accident four years ago, has been left alone by her workaholic father and mentally instable mother, when said mother wasn't ignoring her and replacing her with her brother.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father is often away on business, usually overseas.
  • Girlish Pigtails: When she's in elementary school, she tended to wear a tiny pair of pigtails with otherwise open hair. She eventually ditches them, as she gets older.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother is stationary in a hospital.
  • Parental Abandonment: With both of her parents barely around, Haruka feels very lonely and it's one of the reasons why she likes spending a lot of time around Shinichi's house.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years: Averted. She's shy, quiet and overall acts mature about things, because she wants to appeal to Shinichi and not be a bother to him, but is still a kid growing up.

Masahiro Sugita

A classmate of Haruka's, who followed her one day and found out where she goes after school. He has an obvious crush on her, but barely acts on it until he's frustrated and pushed enough.

  • Class Representative: He was class representative during the beginning arc, taking his position very seriously.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: His mother calls him Ma-kun and Satomi starts doing it herself, much to his dislike. Gets used to it.
  • He Is All Grown Up: How everyone reacts when he appears for the first time in the highschool arc, when there had been no contact between him and the rest of the group for some time.

Utako Sonohara

Another classmate of Haruka's, she's an outgoing girl who is a bit of a romantisist.

  • Alpha Bitch: She was introduced as this, keen on making Sugita her boyfriend and bullying Haruka, because she thought the two of them were a couple.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Wore them up high during elementary school, then wore them lower when she entered middleschool.
  • Love Hurts: She had a cursh on Sugita, before falling for Oogaki. He knew she was just using him as a scapegoat and she eventually admits that she still likes Sugita.
  • Ojou: She's introduced as being from a rich family, but aside from mentioning going on trips to Hawaii, she doesn't come across as this.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After her initial appearance, she mellowed out and became good friends with Haruka.

Oogaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oogaki3.png

An old friend of Shinichi's, who also works for the publisher that releases his novels. He's a feisty man and rather manipulative, trying to get Shinichi to open up to things. He was also the one that made Shinichi begin writig a romance novel.

  • Childhood Marriage Promise: When Utako confesses her feelings for him, he tells her that, if she still feels the same way in 7 years, he'll date her. He knows that her feelings will change, gets engaged during the time and isn't surprised to learn that she's fallen for Sugita in the meantime.
  • Happily Married: Suddenly ends up married during the middleschool arc. By the time the highschool arc begins, he's happily married and they have a second child on the way.
  • Last-Name Basis: Most people simply call him Oogaki or Mr Four-Eyes. Oogaki himself refers to Shinichi as Utsumi-sensei, due to working with him.
  • Shipper on Deck: To the point of manipulation. Oogaki keeps making snide hints at what Shinchi should or shouldn't do and even gives Haruka tips or suggestions on how to become a 'woman that Shinichi will love'. He insists this is merely to make the novel Shinichi is writing interesting.
  • Shotgun Wedding: He got a woman pregnant and decided to marry her, since he was 'at that age', after all.

Satomi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/satomi.png

Another old friend of Shinichi's. She used to go to the same school as them.

  • Chick Magnet: Was super popular during her time in high school, much to her dislike, as she wasn't interested in any of the girls. One of the girls who confessed to her becomes her best friend, though.
  • Fake Boobs: Her impressive bust-size is all fake.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Prior to her transition, Satomi's name was... Satomi.
  • Just Friends: She is this with Shinichi, despite loving him. In reverse, a girl that had a crush on Satomi during high-school ended up becoming best friends with her after her transition.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: She's been in love with Shinichi for years, but due to their history together and her past, she knows nothing will ever come from it.

Saori Morimoto

Haruka's mother. She's been hospitalized some time after her son's accidental death and has been there since. His death has caused her to break down mentally and she has not been able to properly accept it.

  • Abusive Mom: Slapped a young Haruka, when she reminded her of Kazuma's death. Saori ended up replacing 'Haruka' with 'Kazuma' and sees Haruka as her brother now, though any mention of Kazuma's death and reminding her of reality causes Saori to freak out and get violent.
  • Driven to Suicide: Has suicidal tendencies, as she continues to be in therapy. She plans to kill herself to 'join' Kazuma when she reappears.
  • Parents as People: She's a woman who is having severe difficulty accepting the fact that one of her children has died. It's so bad, that she has gone mentally instable and required several psychological means to get her help.
  • Offing the Offspring: When she reappears in Haruka's life, Saori plans to commit suicide to meet Kazuma again and asks Haruka if she'll do it, too.
  • There Are No Therapists: Subverted. Saori has been brought to many psychologists, but none seem to have been able to really help her, until she was hospitalized.
