Protagonists
Nachi
- Voiced by: Sebas
- Character Development: He loses his loner attitude throughout the movie and begins caring about others.
- The Exile: He becomes this when Zaina banishes him from the herd after he tries to warn her about the volcano.
- Foil: To Zaina. Both are animals who have self-serving goals in mind. Nanchi for wanting to be left alone and Zaina for wanting control over the animals. However, Nachi gains empathy for others after his home is destroyed while Zaina is selfish to the end.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He comes across as difficult to get along with, but he shows his heart by saving some young animals when the jungle suffers from an earthquake.
- Last of His Kind: He is the only Koati, and it's acknowledged that he doesn't know any other Koati. Later, sees a painting in an ancient ruin that suggests to him that he has a family of other Koati somewhere.
- Vague Age: It’s stated he’s a kid, but in the English dub, he sounds like someone who just hit 18.
Pako
- Voiced by: Eduardo Franco
- Cloudcuckoolander: He's constantly in his own little world.
- Large Ham: He can't help but make boisterous statements anything he sees as positive happens.
- Motor Mouth: This exchange with Nachi says it best.Pako: Who has a mouth that doesn't speak?Nachi: (annoyed) Definitely not you.
- Plucky Comic Relief: He provides some good humor in the film.
- Somewhere, a Herpetologist Is Crying: His torso only shows his esophagus. In real-life, the belly of a glass frog shows their entire body parts.

- The Gadfly: She enjoys needling others for her own amusement.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She comes off as rather aloof and rude, but does prove herself to have a good heart.

Calli

- Loved by All: Everyone of the animals looks up to him. It makes his demise all the more sad.

- We Hardly Knew Ye: He is killed by the jungle earthquake at the beginning of the film.
Whiskers

Cocopa
- Voiced by: Peter Baker
- Cool Old Guy: He's elderly and quite the most interesting character in the film.
Villains:
Zaina
- Voiced by: Sofía Vergara
- Crocodile Tears: In one scene, she douses her eyes with her saliva to make it seem as though she is as aghast at Balam’s death as everybody else.
- Evil Is Hammy: Sofia Vergara is clearly having the time of her life behind the microphone.
- Evil Is Petty: Zaina has no sympathy for the other animals she is leading. She drinks a puddle of water when many of the other animals are dehydrated (and is quickly called out on it) and is fully willing to leave exhausted animals behind.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Even before her descent into villainy, the rest of the Xo animals barely tolerated her on account of her rudeness and constantly trying to undermine the more authoritative animals.
- It's All About Me: Her selfishness has to be seen to be believed.
- Hated by All: By the end of the film, almost everyone has had enough of her nonsense and refuse to side with her.
- Hypocrisy Nod: After Nachi tells her off for her selfishness at the end, Zaina pulls a "Not So Different" Remark on Nachi's own self-serving tendencies. Nachi doesn't deny it, but also says that he has also gained compassion for others.
- Lack of Empathy: When she takes over as head of the Xo animals, she immediately puts her own wants and needs before the animals she is leading as they are getting tired by the minute.
- Leitmotif: Whenever she would appear, a sitar-sounding theme would be heard in the background.
- Snakes Are Sinister: She's a coral snake who swoops in to take over as leader of the animals of Xo all in an attempt to gain power.
- The Social Darwinist: She is leading all the animals on a Fatal Forced March south of Xo, and is unwilling to help any animals who run out of stamina. Contrast that with most of the residents of Xo, who immediately help others if they see a need.
- Unexplained Recovery: She somehow manages to survive from falling on a cactus, being eaten by an Eagle and avoided getting burned alive by the lava as shown in the ending where she observes the animals from a bush with a sneer.
Jithu
- Voiced by: De La Ghetto
- Gentle Giant: He becomes this following his Heel–Face Turn.
- Heel–Face Turn: He starts out at Zaina's minion, but when during the lava scene at the end, he decides to change sides to live.
- Snakes Are Sinister: At first, Jithu lives up to the trope by enforcing Zaina's wants. But at the end, he pulls a Heel–Face Turn and joins the animals at the Mouth That Does Not Speak.
