Characters / Knightmare Series 3 Teams

Go To

Team 1

Dungeoneer: Gavin
Advisors: Tom, Craig, Brian
From: Uddingston, South Lanarkshire
Object of quest: Sword
Level attained: Level 1
Cause of death: Guided into a hazard

  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When they faced Golgarach, they had to say "I challenge" before he gave them his riddles, something none of the subsequent teams did.
  • Quicksand Sucks: Had the shortest quest of the season come to an end after Gavin stepped off the path into a patch of quicksand in the Vale of Vanburn. At least, as Treguard said, it was not a slow death (ironically, Team 9 would later identify the quicksand hazard in their quest).
Treguard: It's never safe to stray from the path, Team. And in this case, you've strayed from the quest.

Team 2

Dungeoneer: Cliff
Advisors: James, Richard, Matthew
From: Felixstowe
Object of quest: Shield
Level attained: Level 2
Cause of death: Failure to show mercy

  • Failed a Spot Check: Had cast a DANCE spell on McGrew and were in such a hurry to escape, they didn't hear his promise to help if they released him; had they stuck around and shown mercy by dispelling DANCE, McGrew would have fought off the sword haunting in the next room. Alas, they didn't and the sword put an end to Cliff's quest at the end of Level 2.
Treguard: Oh dear! Dire emergency! If only you'd listened to the pleas of McGrew, Team, then perhaps you would have had the help you need here. There's no escape down that tunnel on foot. Besides, this chamber appears to be haunted!
  • No Sympathy: What did them in as explained above. As Merlin would state in the next series, "Without compassion, the game's not worth the winning."
Treguard: It's a pity you didn't show mercy to McGrew.
  • Outrun the Fireball: Defiantly tried to outmanouvre the sword haunting after it sent their life force into fast forward. Didn't do them much good anyway.
  • Thinks of Something Smart, Says Something Stupid: When they faced Brangwen's first riddle, the advisors actually did realise the answer was "ribcage", but they then told Cliff to say "cage" instead.

Team 3

Dungeoneer: Simon
Advisors: Deborah, Mark, Claire
From: Horsham
Object of quest: Crown
Level attained: Level 2
Cause of death: Misguidance

  • Cursed with Awesome: Simon found an amulet of invisibility, which turned him into a star and made it difficult for his advisors to direct him, leading to...
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: The advisors guiding Simon off a cliff.
Treguard: Now just in case you didn't know, Team, that wasn't a shooting star. It was your friend Simon, taking the big leap.

Team 4

Dungeoneer: Leo
Advisors: Matthew, Simon, James
From: Bromley
Object of quest: Cup
Level attained: Level 3
Cause of death: Lack of information from answering a riddle correctly

  • Cannot Tell a Joke: When asked by Motley to tell him a joke in exchange for his help, they messed it up. Repeatedly. Luckily, Motley was feeling generous, saying that he hadn't heard anything like it.
  • Hope Spot: The first team to make it to Level 3, AND had collected all the pieces of the chalice to win the quest. But...
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Having failed to earn vital information from the Gargoyle, the team were forced to guess which path out to four to take with the wrong one sending Leo off the edge of a cliff.
Treguard: Without the Gargoyle's instructions, you've chosen the wrong path and fallen at the last hurdle.
  • Outrun the Fireball: After their life force was put into fast forward by a sword haunting, they managed to quickly spellcast an ENERGY spell to restore it just as it reached critical.

Team 5

Dungeoneer: James
Advisors: Philip, Pulok, Jamie
From: Ipswich
Object of quest: Shield
Level attained: Level 1
Cause of death: Misguidance

  • Literal-Minded: In Golgarach's clue room, after they took the food, they promptly put it back after Golgarach told them nothing was to be taken without earning, causing their life force to revert back from green to amber (the only time in the show's run that a team damaged their life force in this manner).
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: In a rush to escape a room full of hauntings, Pulok accidentally guided James off a ledge.
Treguard: I don't think James survived that fall, Team. At least, not in this adventure.

Team 6

Dungeoneer: Ross
Advisors: Gavin, Fu, Shahzad
From: Birmingham
Object of quest: Free the Maid
Level attained: Level 3
Cause of death: Rushed guidance

  • Eaten Alive: Zig-zagged from previous examples in the series. The team were not quick enough to get off the serpent's tongue when it retreated and they ended up in the monster's stomach. On this occasion a bad egg was used to make the stomach turn and allow the team to make their escape.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: Sensing a pattern? Ross was chased by an axe haunting sent by Morghanna and Fu's directions sent him off the edge of a causeway.
Treguard: That's the trouble with Level 3, Team. Every step spells danger. And there, you let Ross take just one step too many.
  • Sizeshifter: Used a BIG spell they earned from Motley when blocked by Olaf, causing Ross to become large enough to scare off the Viking. They then dispelled the spell at Treguard's suggestion to prevent Ross from getting stuck in the next tunnel.

Team 7

Dungeoneer: Kelly
Advisors: Emma, Sarah, Tammi
From: Sea Palling, Norfolk
Object of quest: Shield
Level attained: Level 1
Cause of death: Incorrect clue object choice

  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • They took a wrong turning in the starting chamber.
    • They thought a saucer of water was deeper than the ocean when Golgarach asked them that riddle.
    • This eventually becomes ogre logic. Made it to the end of Level 1, couldn't find a wellway, and were caught by Grimwold. Treguard then explains they could have escaped the ogre if they had DRAWN a wellway using a crayon they had left in the clue room.
Treguard: If only you'd taken the crayon, you could have created a wellway and made your escape.
  • Tragic Mistake: They tried to be too clever when facing Golgarach, and tried to claim that a saucer of water was deeper than the ocean thinking it would have been obvious. In many years the team would have gotten away with this, but in the extremely unforgiving Series 3, where even the slightest mistake could (and usually did) doom a team's quest, their failure to get a perfect score on his riddles spelled disaster.

Team 8

Dungeoneer: Douglas
Advisors: Richard, Derek, Matthew
From: Weston-Super-Mare
Object of quest: Crown
Level attained: Level 1
Cause of death: Incorrect clue object choice from lack of correct answers

  • Irony: Like Team 1 of Series 2, they didn't earn the secret on the gauntlet's usage. Unlike them, however, they didn't take the gauntlet.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Left Motley behind with a giant snake — ironically, Matthew actually realised that they were supposed to get Motley to move away from the snake, but Derek misunderstood him and told Douglas to move away from Motley — then walked straight into a bomb room without the item needed to defuse it due to not earning that information from Brangwen.
Treguard: Too slow, boys, too slow. Anyway, what you needed here was the armourer's gauntlet. It freezes the fuse, don't you know? Well, no, of course you don't. Because you didn't earn that information from the clue room.
  • Too Dumb to Live: It seemed as if they just wanted to blitz through the dungeon. Never mind that this is not how you play Knightmare. They’re also the only team this season to get only one answer correct when dealing with Brangwen- the next team would also only get one riddle correct with Golgarach, but would go further.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Due to only getting the jousting riddle from Brangwen right, the team automatically took a key and a gold bar, seemingly drawing on their logical uses (opening a door and bribery).

Team 9

Dungeoneer: Scott
Advisors: Jeremy, Nathan, Ian
From: Ash Vale, Hampshire
Object of quest: Cup
Level attained: Level 2
Cause of death: Lack of information from correct answers and misguidance

  • Achievement In Ignorance: Despite only scoring one with Golgarach, they took the correct clue objects they needed to get through Level 1.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Had the spells for the second and third steps in Merlin's chamber, but didn't have the first due to the above.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: Actually made the jump over the gap to the second step, but then walked off the edge, just before they could meet Merlin.
Treguard: A brave leap, but a tragic fall, I'm afraid. What a pity, for I've a strong suspicion you were just about to encounter Merlin.

Team 10

Dungeoneer: Julie
Advisors: Amanda, Marie, Angela
From: Knighton, Leicester
Object of quest: Sword
Level attained: Level 2
Cause of death: Failure to acquire magic from correct answers

  • Achievement In Ignorance: Although Brangwen gave no information to the team despite them getting two of her riddles correct, they, like the previous team, chose the correct clue objects to get through Level 1. It helped that one of the objects was an empty jar of humbugs, an item with little obvious use.
  • False Reassurance: After only getting one of Merlin's two riddles right, the sorcerer told them that many teams had survived Level 2 without having gotten his magic before. And in the previous years that might have been correct, but in Series 3? Not a chance.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Surrounded by goblins with no magic, which they would've earned from Merlin if they got both of his riddles right, the advisors tell Julie to offer the gem she's holding to them as a present; all the goblins are interested in is fresh blood.
Treguard: Shame you didn't have that rather useful little anti-goblin spell that Merlin hands out on these occasions.

Team 11

Dungeoneer: Martin
Advisors: Darren, Lee, Jamie
From: York
Object of quest: Cup
Level attained: Level 3
Cause of death: Failure to acquire magic from answering a riddle correctly

  • Failure Is the Only Option: Like Team 4 before them, they succeeded in collecting all the pieces of the chalice. However, also like Team 4, their failure to solve Owen's riddle denied them a win, as they missed out at earning vital dragon magic and they were quickly dispatched by Morghanna.
Treguard: Morghanna, it seems, has struck again. I'm awfully sorry about this boys, because we had great hopes for you. But without dragon magic, I'm afraid you were no match for Morghanna.
  • Poison Mushroom: Found a destructor in the Level 3 clue room that, like with Team 3 of Series 2 (who found one in the Level 2 clue room), caused life force drainage when picked up. In this instance it also had the same visual effect on the chamber as it did on the Level 2 clue room during the quest of Team 10 of Series 2.
Treguard: Emergency! A destructor is here! Life force draining!

Team 12

Dungeoneer: Chris
Advisors: James, Alex, Tim
From: Bristol
Object of quest: Shield
Level attained: Level 2

  • Left Hanging: Had just got past Merlin when their quest had to be cut short due to the dungeon disintegrating (because enough footage was recorded for that series as of the middle of their quest).
