Plop
Played by: Walter De Donder (Flanders/Netherlands)
The main protagonist of the show. He loves making Plop cookies and Plop milk. He's also the most responsible of the gnomes.
- Cool Old Guy: A middle-aged gnome who owns a milk stand and makes cookies in his home. While he's the most responsible character of the series, he's loves having fun.
- The Hero: Serves as the character who solves certain situations.
- The Leader: When it comes to adventurous outside of Kabouterland, he's main leader of the team.
- Would Hit a Girl: To Kwebbel and Smal in Verpleegertjes
and to Kwebbel in Prinses Kwebbel.
Kwebbel (Pipolette)
Played by: Agnes De Nul (Flanders/Netherlands)
An energetic female gnome who is prone to talking a lot usually getting halted by the over gnomes when she goes on to long.
- Adaptational Attractiveness: In the Walloon version, Kwebbel (Pipolette in French) looks a lot younger, beautiful, and slim compared to the original Flemish version of the series where she is played by Agnes De Nul who's middle-aged like the other characters.
- Character Catchphrase:
- "Oops! Ik praat veel te veel" ("Oops! I talk too much")
- "Ik zal nog eens iets zeggen he!" ("I'll say something again!")
- Daag-dag-dag-dag-daa!
- Exact Eavesdropping: Seen doing this in "Jij Praat Teveel"
- Genki Girl: She gets easily excited and gets hyper when nervous or scared.
- Motor Mouth: She has a habit of talking for over a minute.
- Team Mom: To the other gnomes
- The Smurfette Principle: She was originally the only female gnome in the series until 2000 when Smal was introduced.
Lui (Dordebou)
Played by: Chris Cauwenbergs (Flanders/Netherlands)
A mailman gnome who is lazy and is always seen falling asleep constantly.- Adaptational Attractiveness: In the Walloon version, Lui (Dordebou) looks more younger looking and the same size as the other characters (he is actually the smallest of the cast), while he was the tallest in the original Flemish version.
- Character Catchphrase:
- "Ik word daar zoe moe van" ("That makes me so tired")
- Volk!
- Gentle Giant: He's the tallest character in the series, and the most sensitive character of the cast.
- Heavy Sleeper: He even sleeps through bizarre situations.
- Lazybum: Prone to falling asleep
- Put on a Bus: Due to Chris Cauwenbergs' cancer diagnoses, Lui was retired from the franchise after 2014.
- Prone to Tears: Lui gets his feelings easily hurt and prone to crying as a result.
- Fear of Thunder: As shown both in the episode "Donder en bliksem" and the movie "Plop in de Wolken".
- Vocal Evolution: Before Chris Cauwenbergs' cancer diagnoses, his vocal performance as Lui beginning in 2013 was notably slower than usual. As seen in these videos from a 2014 show at Plopsaland, Lui's voice and performance is not as energetic and notably deeper compared to prior live appearances.
Klus (Bric)
Played by: Aimé Anthoni. (Flanders/Netherlands)
A mischievous gnome who loves playing pranks usually backfiring on him. He also builds and repairs things.- Butt-Monkey: Most the shows slapstick is on Klus when ever his pranks backfire or stuff falls on him.
- Expy: His main character traits are very similar to the ones of Octaaf De Bolle from the Studio 100 show Samson En Gert, as both are handymen who constantly gloat about how they are the best in almost anything (which mostly turns out otherwise).
- Cloud Cuckoolander: He thinks up various pranks some can even confuse the other gnomes. At one point he wants to fly like a bird by using a pair of wings he created.
- Character Catchphrase:
- "Ik ben 't beste _____ in het hele bos!" ("I am the best _____ in the whole forest!")
- "Tjoep Tjoep"
- Hallokidoki!
- Handyman: He does most of the fixing and preparing and even would create an invention for specific purposes.
- Keet: Very energetic and fast paced.

- Who's Laughing Now?: When ever some of his pranks backfire, the gnomes start laughing back at him.
Smul
Played by: Luc Caals (Flanders/Netherlands)
The largest of the gnomes who loves tarts and is a baker.- Big Eater: He really loves tarts and cakes.
- Perfect Disguise, Terrible Acting: As the titular character in "De Kabouterkoning" note . His identity is revealed when he utters his catch phrase "Smuller-de-smuller-de-smul!" while holding a cake, prompting Plop to rip the fake beard off of his face.
Smal
Played by: Hilde Vanhulle (Flanders/Netherlands)
The thinnest gnome of the show, the other gnomes would sometimes try to see which one of them would get a kiss from her.- Character Catchphrase: "Oopsy-poopsy!"
- Narcissist: A mild example, she usually uses her mirror to make sure she looks pretty.
- The Tease: Can be seen flirting with the other male gnomes
