Polanian Units
In general
- Blue Is Heroic: Every Polanian infantry unit wears a blue shirt, coat or vest. Anna Kos' beret is blue.
- Fighting for a Homeland: After the Great War, the Polanian military has been more or less reduced to a resistance faction hellbent on forcing Saxony and the Rusviet out of their home. Unfortunately, this desire is played upon by Fenris.
- Hit-and-Run Tactics: Mobility is the name of Polania's game. With the exception of the Tur, Polania's mechs sacrifice durability for speed, allowing them to rush in for an attack and then retreat before their opponents can react.
- Long-Range Fighter: Polania's standard riflemen may lack the speed of Saxony or the CQC punch of the Rusviet, but make up for both shortcomings with being able to outrange their opponents in a fight.
- Red Armband of Leadership: In this case, the red is part of a red-and-white armband: the colors of Polania's flag.
- Unwitting Pawn: The Polanians' attempts to resist Rusviet occupation are planned to be exploited by Fenris, who intend to use it as justification to start another war.

Rusviet Units
In general
- Close-Range Combatant: The biggest strength of the Rusviet is close-range raw damage, whether it be through a Vanguard's shotgun or an Ognivo's dual flamethrowers, all the way up to Colonel Zubov's massive blades.
- Hidden Evil: Many Rusviet soldiers are loyal to Fenris.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: Given the machinations of Rasputin and Colonel Zubov and the very little screentime of Fenris' units, they are the closest Iron Harvest has to a truly evil faction. It doesn't' help that their uniforms are primarily red, black and gray, in contrast to the blue of Polania, Saxony and Usonia.
- Further adding onto this, they are the first enemy faction the player fights in the Usonia DLC.
- Shotguns Are Just Better: The Rusviet standard unit, the "Vanguard", are armed with nothing but shotguns.

Saxonian Units
In general
- Blue Is Heroic: Not as much as Polania, but once Gunter and his followers join the Polanians in their quest to save Tesla from Fenris, they ultimately cross the line into being a hero faction.
- Broken Bird: By the end of the main campaign, Prince Wilhem's paranoia regarding Fenris has driven Saxony into chaos as he tries to root out perceived threats to the empire's survival.
- The Usonia DLC further pulls back the curtain on Saxony's post-war behavior as they fight to keep their grip on Arabia.
- Hypocrite: Saxony was heavily against the Rusviet Vanguards' use of shotguns... while they themselves attacked Rusviet positions with poison gas during the war.
- More Dakka: Saxonian basic infantry all carry submachine guns, giving them decent range and damage (though outclassed at range by Polania and outclass in CQC damage by Rusviet). As a downside to this, they lack a machine gunner unit outside of the campaign.
