Ihalempi

The main character

  • Bratty Teenage Daughter: Far from the worst, she is modest and usually considerate, but doesn't really act very responsively especially considering the situation her family is in. It mostly works for the best however.

  • Determinator: Despite all, she really doesn't five up.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her reckleshnes causes her problems from time to time for not planning forward.
  • Femininity Failure: She can't cook that well and is clumsy. Subverted as she does excel to some point in some feminine crafts such as sewing and spinning.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Although she does not fit the bill perfectly because of her fears of several things, ancient Finns considered nature to be alive, and she heavily leans towards respecting it mindset too.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Subverted as she only thinks of herself that way and never says it out loud, and justified as she isn't mostly thought of as specially attractive.
  • The Ingenue: She is quite naive when it comes to men.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She is not the epitome of this trope, but she has blue eyes, although of greyish variety, and she is somewhat naive.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is ancient Finnish and freely translated means something of "sweet love". She is somewhat shy and reclusive, but also thoughtful and good-willed. Though she herself thinks this is averted as she isn't particularly beautiful or wanted spouse, and she lives in early medieval Finland. In medieval Finland, this name was in fact a male name, so the name becomes Gender-Blender Name.
  • Home Sweet Home: What she discovers the second she leaves Rikala, her village that she sees as Arcadia later surrounded by Ghibli Hills.
  • The Quiet One: Even with people she knows she often talks least, with expection with her sister.

  • Character Development: Her earliest appearance has her mainly focused in her upcoming marriage and not much else, she is portrayed smart but still somewhat disinterested and even inconsiderate. She develops then to responsible figure and the head of the family at young age.
  • Closer to Earth: After Character Development but somewhat already before when compared to ever curious Ihalempi.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She is handy and skilled in kitchen work.
  • Foolish Husband, Responsible Wife: She is the head of the house instead of her husband Ikävalko.
  • Hidden Depths: She is generally focused in her traditionally happy looking future, but many characters don't notice that she is actually very smart and often seems to have first hand knowledge.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from Finnish, basically meaning somewhet "agreeable". How muchs it describes her is up to consideration, she is very confident.
  • Nerves of Steel: After Character Development.
  • Neutral Female: Despite being obviously more strongwilled than Ihalempi, she is quite passive in many ways and disinterested of outside world, especially at the start. She however develops later into The Reliable One.
  • Official Couple: With Ikävalko.
  • Younger than She Looks: She looks older than Ihalempi despite being younger.

Ikämieli

Ihalempi's love interest at the start.

  • Birds of a Feather: Part of why Ihalempi is attracted to him, he is Nice Guy.
  • Character Development: He starts out bit more quiet and less confident than what he develops into.
  • Closer to Earth: Compared to Petrus and other men in the village.
  • Nice Guy: He is good willed like Ihalempi and not overtly eager to go to war in a way some other men in the village are.
