Monty Adams
The protagonist and the clones that he discovers, who were created by his Uncle Leo.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Or more like Dye Job in a Covers Always Lie way. Monty is red haired and green eyed in the book, but brown haired and blue eyed in the front of the book.
- All Love Is Unrequited: He develops a crush on a girl named Ashley. They seem to be forming a good relationship. But then she gets mad at him for having to clean up the art room because of a mess they made, and ignores him throughout the whole cleanup. But when he leaves to get something, a clone of him comes along to make him look bad right in front of her, causing a huge mess and ruining everyone’s project as she sees the whole thing. She clearly thinks he’s now a psychopath, and tearfully rats him out to the teacher who gives him more cleanup work and tells the bullies who beat him up. Needless to say, she probably doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore.
- Bonding over Missing Parents: One reason he and Nan get along is that they can both relate to having a dead parent, as Nan's mother/ aunt died when she younger, as did Monty's dad.
- Cloudcuckoolander: He thinks he might be one when he sees versions of himself all over the place. They actually are his clones.
- Distinguishing Mark: The clones have a blue dot on them to tell them apart from the original. They put one on the real Monty so that this won't bail him out.
- Embarrassing First Name: His real name is Montgomery, which he hates.
- Feel No Pain: The clones, and is part of the reason they feel they are superior.
- Gaslighting: The clones go to his school to mess things up and make it look like he did it, thus making him wonder if he's going crazy.
- Impersonating the Evil Twin: Monty pretends to be one of the clones when he gets captured along with them to fool them into helping him escape.
- Plot Allergy: Monty is allergic to peanuts and Nam and Leo plan to use this to figure out which one is the real Monty, as the clones seemingly lack the allergy.
- Separated at Birth: Monty finds out that his cousin Nan is his twin sister and she had to be given up because his Mom was unable to financially support both of them
- Something Only They Would Say: One of the clones convinces Nan he is the real one by reminding her of a story she had shared to him the night before.
- Spot the Imposter: This happens twice. And both times they pick the wrong one.
- Uncertain Doom: At the end of the book he's sent away with the other clones to share their fate. That said, he was able to escape a similar situation earlier, and Nan finds out who the real Monty was at the end of the book. We don't find out what happens...
