The Jorcastle is one of the four major families in Finsel, descending from a will mage among the Saint's Army who had left ancient Mandaria after the fall of the Golden Lily Dynasty. Inheriting the mage bloodline, the Jorcastle Family is full of great mages and has always specialized in powerful Will Magic.

Tropes applying to the Jorcastle household as a whole:

  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The family's representative color is green.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Gonzalo states that all Jorcastle children just want freedom, and how they act on this desire reflect their character: Ramus escaped his mother’s shackles by giving up his position and traveling the world; Gonzalo loves his mother so much that he willingly sacrifices his personal freedom for her; and Lynna’s illegitimacy bound her to a hateful relationship with her stepmother and she can only gain control over her own life after they both work on this problem.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Both of Duchess Tilla’s biological sons have long blonde hair. Alminas, the elf supported by the Jorcastle, also has the same hair.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ramus and Gonzalo are both Long-Haired Pretty Boy with the same hair and eye coloration. Since Lynna also has blonde hair, it’s implied that the late Duke Jorcastle was blonde.

"The strong rule the weak."

Chinese Name: Dila Jorcastle (Chinese transliteration of Tilla)
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Human
Preferred Subjects: Politics, Social
Preferred Style: Mature, Delicate
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Element: Earth
Political Stance: Conservatism

The head of the Jorcastle household following the death of her husband, the late Duke Jorcastle, who leads her family with an iron fist. She is also the inheritor of the family's ancient magic secrets and has always been a trustworthy supporter of the Spiral Spire. Bringing the Jorcastle back into prosperity has left her exhausted, and she constantly worries about their future.

  • Affair? Blame the Bastard: She loves the late Duke unconditionally and hates his illegitimate daughter for being the living proof that he may not feel the same. That said, despite her animosity, Tilla chose not to kill Lynna early on because on some level she still realized Lynna's own innocence in the whole affair.
"Because [Lynna’s] presence was a reminder that my husband cheated on me."
  • Age Insecurity: Tilla is a bit obsessed with finding a solution to aging, and her pronounced dislike for Black Shadow is suggested to be because he’s personally offended her by hitting her sore spot about her age.
  • Badass Bookworm: She’s greatly competent as a will mage and also a bibliophile who wrote novels and hosted literary salons.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In Helix Horizon, she was under the influence of black powder and tried to kill Alan and Gonzalo.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Tilla was terribly burdened by her responsibilities as the duchess of the Jorcastle Household, which caused her to give up on her childhood dream and forge herself in the crucible of Finsel's nobility to the point of losing her former self while upholding the Tough Leader Façade.
  • Classy Cravat: She wears one with her gown, befitting the matriarch of a noble household. It also conveniently hides her cleavage from the low neckline and makes her attire more decorous.
  • Commonality Connection: When she was young, she hosted literary salons but was disappointed to find out that the nobles and rich civilians that attended were only looking to make political connections. Duke Jorcastle was the only person who treated them like the literary salons that Tilla had imagined. He also encouraged her writing career and had Finsel's first typewriter imported from Rayorca in order to help Tilla disguise her handwriting from her disapproving family.
  • Education Mama: Ramus, being the Jorcastle heir and first son, received what was perhaps Tilla’s harshest criticisms and strictest expectations growing up, and to this day he still believes himself to be a disappointment in his mother’s eyes. In her defense, she only wanted him to keep up with the ever-growing social pressure as the first son of Jorcastle, and he has always been good enough in her heart.
  • Fictional Document: She is the author of a romance novel based on her relationship with the late Duke. At the end of her favour questline, she gives Magda the unpublished sequel.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: She soon takes a liking to Magda and develops a genuine friendship with her, even though she’s old enough to be her mother. Eliza comments that Magda can serve as a young friend for Tilla to speak her mind to without having to worry about her safety and family’s position.
  • Jerkass to One: Tilla isn’t a kind person, but she’s generally cordial even to Magda - the daughter of a fallen household. Her stepdaughter Lynna is an exception.
  • Heir-In-Law: Tilla became the head of house of the Jorcastle Family due to the dying will of the late Duke Jorcastle, despite having married into the Jorcastle Family and having no experience running a household.
  • Lady of Black Magic: In her youth, she was training to become a will mage and was the only one living in Finsel before Rebecca’s arrival. Will Magic is notably controversial because of it’s dubious nature and potential for misuse, which is why the tradition is kept a close family secret within the Jorcastle family.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: She has always loved literature and wrote the famous novel "Virota's Rose" that depicts her budding relationship with and eventual marriage to the Duke, though it is published under a Pen Name. Despite her family’s disapproval, she wanted to become an accomplished author instead of taking over her family's property and would keep her manuscripts hidden from her parents when she first started writing, disguised as mage’s notes. She ultimately gave up her dream of becoming an author to be Duchess Jorcastle, though she has written several unpublished manuscripts since then. Ramus, upon returning to Finsel, made her childhood dream come true and, with Magda's help, saw one of his mother's unpublished manuscripts reach the stage, cheered on by the whole of Finsel.
  • The Mourning After: Despite the pain and hardships the late Duke Jorcastle had caused her, Tilla still loves him dearly and mourns him deeply when he passed.
  • Parents in Distress: Is abducted late in the main story as part of Duke Bavlenka's plot to destabilise the power shared between the four great houses.
  • Pet the Dog: She hates Lynna for being the illegitimate child of her husband who she is obligated to raise, but didn’t actually kill her off despite how easy it would be and gave her a considerable level of privilege because she was subconsciously aware that Lynna had nothing to do with the affair.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: Wears her hair like this to complement her image as a proper duchess.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: When she was young, Tilla used to wear glasses even though she had no need to because she believed they made her appear smarter.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: As the only Duchess among the four Dukes and the inheritor of the family's ancient magic secrets, this woman cannot be underestimated, and her red eyes imply how dangerous she is.
  • Secret Test of Character: Thanks to her power as a will mage, she was awake when left behind with Lynna and Lawrence and knew that Lynna resisted her own hateful thoughts to rescue Tilla. This event begins to convince her that Lynna deserves to be treated as her daughter and their relationship should change for the better.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She’s the only Duchess of the Four Families’ leaders.
  • The Social Darwinist: Because of her experiences fighting to retain power, Tilla believes that equality is inherently unnatural, and that nobles and humans will always remain in power. Given a choice, she will always choose to gain more power than to achieve fairness because she believes that "the strong rule the weak", and it is in her best interest to remain 'the strong' for as long as possible.
"As long as people live in the world, the pain is inevitable. No matter what position you hold, you will have troubles and depression..."
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In her youth, Tilla was a bubbly socialite and a budding author who had a Friendly Rivalry with Eliza, but losing her husband, having the position of the duchess thrusted into her inexperience hands, and learning that her beloved husband had an illegitimate child changed her youthful and dramatic self into a strict and callous matriarch.
  • Tough Leader Façade: To combat the whispers of her incompetence and weakness as a female head of house, she stuck rigidly to maintaining a conservative and conventional household, and managed to hold onto power and lift up the Jorcastle name on her own through her ruthlessness in spite of everyone working against her. Her loyalty to making the Jorcastle flawless and unparalleled has notably damaged her relationships with her children, however.
  • Wicked Stepmother: It’s no secret that Tilla hates Lynna for souring her memories of her late husband and only tolerates her existence the Jorcastle Household because she cannot refuse her beloved husband’s dying wish. She often takes out her frustrations on Lynna for that and for not falling into the role of a noblewoman and marrying out of the family and Tilla’s hair, pointedly turns a blind eye when Lynna is publicly insulted, and even sets a bounty on her biological mother's head. They finally reach an understanding after the conclusion of the main storyline, however, and Tilla's hostility toward Lynna softens enough that she's willing to accept her as a Jorcastle.
  • You Remind Me of X: According to her, Magda reminds Tilla of herself in her youth.

    Ramus Jorcastle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/386ce392_8b8f_48ba_8f24_87c90d53b31c.png

Chinese Name: Leimulusi Jorcastle (Chinese transliteration of Ramus)
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Human
Preferred Subjects: Politics, Trivia
Preferred Style: Lovely, Sexy
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Element: Wind
Political Stance: Conservatism

Tilla's oldest son and Gonzalo’s brother. Years ago, he gave up his inheritance to travel the world, but suddenly returned when the turmoil in Finsel come to an end and began to shoulder the responsibility of leading the Jorcastle family.

  • Classy Cane: He wields a cane in his sprite, although he switches it to a Magic Staff in his Dean outfit to match the image of a mage.
  • Gentleman Wizard: He’s a well-dressed young man just like his brother, and a more powerful will mage than even his mother.
  • Hot Teacher: After the Season 2 quest "Opening Ceremony", he founds and becomes the dean of the Magic Academy. He even changes his outfit to look more scholarly.
  • Ma'am Shock: He’s not happy when a kid calls him "uncle" in front of Magda, especially when that kid refers to Magda as "sister" right after.
  • More than Just a Teacher: He is the Duke of a noble household that harbors ancient secrets regarding the powerful and dubious Will Magic, and becomes the principal of the Magic Academy whose purpose is to spread magic to the common folks.
  • Rejecting the Inheritance: He’s said to have given up his family’s inheritance and decided to travel around the world, explaining his absence and lack of mention in the first season. Subverted when he returns to take up the title of Duke Jorcastle at the start of season two.
  • The Social Darwinist: Because of his mother’s influence, he also thinks that the strong can gain everything and the weak will simply be eliminated in the process, but Magda helps him realize that it isn’t a good mindset.
  • Walking the Earth: He was traveling the world in the first season before returning in the second season.

    Gonzalo Jorcastle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f17a0883_1481_44e9_a95c_73e298256d31.png
"You know, the more beautiful and noble you are, the more dazzling jewelry you need to wear. Like me, I am more handsome with this gem."

Chinese Name: Gangsaluo Jorcastle (Chinese transliteration of Gonzalo)
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Human
Preferred Subjects: Entertainment, Fashion
Preferred Style: Noble, Gorgeous
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Element: Water
Political Stance: Liberalism

Second son of the Jorcastle family. He is a mage, but has little interest in battle, preferring balls and fashion. At the request of his family, he became a mage, but his interest in battle is almost nonexistent. His only purpose in dueling is to show off new robes, new staffs or a new power pose.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Late in his favour questline, he starts calling Magda his "little sparrow".
  • Agent Peacock: He is obsessed with his appearance, but it doesn’t deny the fact that he used to train in the Spiral Spire as a mage. In the campaign to the Amber Throne, he leads the Jorcastle’s army to take charge of the area around the city gate.
  • Aloof Big Brother: He doesn’t get involved with Lynna in public and they’re rarely seen together in the same ball.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Gonzalo's main interests are fashion and Alan, whose attention he is fiercely possessive of. Even at maximum favour he shows no romantic interest in Magda, and Eliza's comments in his in-game profile indicate suspicion that he's not interested in ladies.
  • Big Brother Instinct: They may not have the warmest relationship, but Gonzalo still views Lynna as his younger sister and a member of the Jorcastle. Because of this, before Lynna and Magda’s meeting started, he added one additional condition to their contract: Lynna’s wealth and position will be guaranteed for life as long as the Jorcastles stay in Finsel. In his letter, he also admits he feels thankful that Lynna isn't involved with the nobles' politics, and that not many can be as carefree as she.
  • Brutal Honesty: When it comes to fashion, he doesn't hold back and is straightforward whether he is praising or berating people.
  • Camp Gay: His interest in Alan doesn’t exactly come as a surprise considering how he normally acts. In fact, he would wear much more socially unacceptable and traditionally feminine clothing if it would not ruin the Jorcastle's reputation.
  • The Dandy: He's not the only male character who numbers fashion among his interests, but is by far the most enthusiastic about it. With his family’s status, he always gets the best clothing, jewelry and cosmetics that even noble ladies struggle to find, which he flaunts at any chance given.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: He can play the piano and cello, which fits his image as a well-educated childe.
  • Flower Motifs: Gonzalo loves and feels aligned with the elegant beauty of narcissus, and has a discussion with Magda on the flower in a ball which leads to them developing a friendship.
  • Gay Best Friend: Since he’s not romanceable even at maximum favor, he plays this role for Magda.
  • Momma's Boy: Downplayed. He and Tilla are very close, and Tilla's favour questline starts with him wanting Magda's help in getting her a gift reminiscent of her youth. He becomes colder and more ruthless when Tilla is abducted in the main story, going as far as opposing Alan when he objects to Gonzalo's methods, and he laments to Magda that he seems to be the only member of his family who really wants his mother back.
  • Mythical Motifs:
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Is basically told this with regards to Lynna when he tries to get along with her, much to their identical annoyance.
  • Proud Beauty: Gonzalo is happy to receive praises for his handsome appearance, and enjoys Magda’s accompany because her beauty highlights his own.
  • Proud Peacock: Juven and Hugh refer to him as a "green peacock" as a jab at his garish taste in clothing.
  • Spare to the Throne: Gonzalo wasn’t meant to be Tilla’s heir, but after his elder brother left Finsel, he abandoned his training in the Spiral Spire and returned to accept the Viscount title in Ramus’ place.

    Lynna Jorcastle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d5fedab0_d3bc_4379_9186_c6b2850d6b6c.png
New appearance (after main storyline)

Chinese Name: Linna Jorcastle
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Human
Preferred Subjects: Social, Fashion
Preferred Style: Gorgeous, Noble
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Element: Wind
Political Stance: Dissident

The illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Jorcastle, she was brought into the family after her father's death. She has never been taken seriously by any of her relatives, so she started a life of luxury to cope with her situation.

  • Alpha Bitch: She’s haughty, bad-tempered and often gives others dressings-down at balls.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: While Gonzalo doesn’t outright hate her like his mother, he doesn’t think of her highly either.
  • Awful Truth: Lawrence has been sheltering her from the fact that her birth mother isn’t the elegant noblewoman in her imagination, but is only an old beggar who exploits him for money to drink and gamble. When Black Glove tells her this truth and that she hurts the people she holds dear without realizing it, she breaks down crying for a long while.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She is the youngest Jorcastle sibling.
  • Bastard Angst: Is hated by her stepmother and looked down on by her half-brother as well as the rest of the Finsel nobility, amongst whom her illegitimacy is an open secret. Gets better when she is finally accepted as a Jorcastle and family member by Gonzalo and Tilla at the end of season one.
  • Bastard Bastard: She’s the illegitimate child of the late Duke and a stereotypical Alpha Bitch.
  • Benevolent Boss: Surprisingly enough, she’s one for Lawrence. She genuinely sees Lawrence as a friend whom she trusts with her life and has given Lawrence expensive and tailor-made gifts like coin pouches, as well as gold coins. She also has a ball for Lawrence on his birthday, against convention, and gets angry at the nobles for humiliating him.
  • Black Sheep: Her father - the only person in the Jorcastle who cared about her enough to give her a better life as a noble - was already dead when she was admitted into the household, leaving her with her stepmother who hates her for being the bastard and her stepbrother who looks down on her.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: She becomes Magda’s friend after the first season. Not that she will admit it.
  • Butt-Monkey: None of Lynna’s attempt to pick on Magda goes well, and she always ends up as a laughingstock in public.
  • Character Development: In the beginning, she lives lavishly and lashes out at people of lower status than her to gain some satisfactions that make up for her horrible social life. Near the end of the first season, she learns how her previous behaviors do nothing but hurt her own standing in Finsel’s high society and even people she holds dear like Lawrence, and gets the chance to prove her worth to the Duchess so that she will be taken seriously as a member of the Jorcastle Household.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Has green eyes and is envious of Magda's popularity.
  • Flower Motifs: Both her original and new gown are adorned with yellow roses. This color of rose once signified the negative traits of jealousy and greed, just like how Lynna was a Green-Eyed Monster, but nowadays it signals true friendship, which coincides with her relationship development with Magda.
  • Foil: With Nyx Bavlenka, a fellow noble lady adopted into a ducal household who is "shackled" by their parent and yearns for control over their own life. While Nyx receives Parental Favoritism from Grand Duke Bavlenka, Duchess Tilla has nothing but scorn for Lynna, causing their personality to be polar opposite. However, Lynna and Tilla manage to settle their relationship peacefully and become familial, but it takes Grand Duke Bavlenka’s seeming death to truly set Nyx free. Lynna also mentions Nyx’s recent Arranged Marriage when set out the condition that she won’t marry for Jorcastles' political or social gains in her contract with Magda.
  • Freudian Excuse: She’s the Black Sheep in her own family and her illegitimacy also makes her a ripe target for gossips among Finsel nobility. No wonder she’s so desperate to be viewed favorably that she will stomp on others to lift herself up.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Even though she has become Magda’s friend after the main storyline, she still doesn’t have any Relationship Values for the player to raise.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She singles Magda out since the Debutante because of the attention she receives, and her jealousy only gets worse when Magda ascends the social hierarchy.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She softens her attitude down with Magda after Magda helps her multiple times. They eventually become friends, though Lynna is still quite a Tsundere.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Lynna’s attempts to humiliate Magda fail so miserably and backfire her so frequently that Magda goes from being confused and annoyed to taking pity on her.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She picks on Magda because for a disgraced illegitimate child like her, a "nouveau riche" from a fallen household is the easiest target to impose the "superiority" she wishes she had on. Her motive changes to jealousy once Magda’s standing in Finsel’s high society rises unstoppably while she’s still stuck in her illegitimacy’s shadow.
  • Marry for Love: One of Lynna’s conditions for agreeing to Magda's plan is that she gets to choose who she wishes to marry, and won’t have to endure an Arranged Marriage for the Jorcastles' political or social gains.
Lynna: I don't want to be a soulless chess piece! There are a lot of ways to benefit my family, but using my marriage is out of the question!
Lynna: To sum it up, they can't carelessly marry me off because of benefits to my family!
  • Ojou Ringlets: Begins to have this in her new appearance to signify her status upgrade.
  • Pet the Dog: Even though she is disgusted by the beggar woman and wants to throw her out of her sight, she still tells Lawrence to give the woman some money because she seems to be suffering.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: At first she styles her hair like this, giving her a typical noblewoman look. Ironically, she’s anything but prim and proper.
  • Smarter Than They Look: Lynna may seem like a brainless socialite at first glance, but she’s actually more observant than she looks when she’s not obsessing over defeating Magda. After her What You Are in the Dark moment, she tells Tilla that she can understand why Tilla treats her the way she does, connect the dots to prove that Tilla doesn’t hate her as much as she wants to, and convinces the duchess to see her as deserving of the Jorcastle name.
  • Tsundere: She’s too embarrassed to thank Magda properly for defending her honor and makes it sound like a declaration of war instead. Although she stubbornly insists that Magda's relationship with her will never progress beyond "rivals", she's also shown to care about Magda's well-being and safety.
  • Unknown Rival: Lynna singles Magda out as her archenemy almost immediately, and challenges her whenever possible in hopes of driving her out of the nobility's social circles. She's one of the few named characters in the game with whom it's impossible to gain favour. Unfortunately for Lynna, Magda only sees her as a mild nuisance at worst and wants to understand why she acts that way rather than entertaining her delusion.
  • Visual Development: After the main storyline, Lynna changes her appearance significantly (along with Art Evolution) to show that she’s now a legitimate member of the Jorcastle and even doted on by Duchess Tilla.
  • What You Are in the Dark: After Duchess Tilla was rescued, she was in an unconscious state, tied up with a rope, and there was no one else around her but Lynna and Lawrence. Lynna was venting how stupid it was for Tilla to mistreat her for her father’s infidelity when they were attacked by a crazy woman who took black powder. She pondered how this was the perfect opportunity to get Tilla killed for revenge, but ultimately acted against it and used herself as the bait to lure the woman away so that Lawrence could rescue the duchess. Unbeknownst to her, Tilla was awake the whole time, and the duchess wished to have a talk with Lynna to sort their relationship out after she properly recovered.

Servants

    Alminas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ad9a8e9a_89d5_42dc_a078_9b826f98cc4b.png
"For me, [Age] itself is the longest adventure. Living among humans, making friends with them, and watching them aging and die, this is a great challenge for me."

Chinese Name: Arminasi (Chinese transliteration of Alminas)
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Elf
Preferred Subjects: Adventure, Art
Preferred Style: Pure, Noble
Alignment: Neutral Good
Element: Wind
Political Stance: Liberalism

An elf supported by the Jorcastle family, and Captain of the Senate Guards. He is an elegant, smart and talented archer adored by the ladies of Finsel. Although he seems young and handsome, he is actually one of the oldest elves in Finsel, aged over 220.

  • Chick Magnet: Whether Alminas has stopped mourning his late wife and is ready to welcome a Second Love is what all ladies in Finsel want to figure out.
  • Clothing Damage: His clothes are damaged on his way to the Spiral Spire from the Senate's dungeons. Everyone present agrees that it’s a miracle he arrives in one piece while looking like this because the ladies of Finsel would have gone crazy over an inch of his bare skin.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: His human wife knew the gap between the humans and the Elves from the beginning but she didn't give up on pursuing him, and the contradiction between her tender appearance and tough mind eventually made him fall for her. Unfortunately, Happily Married as they were, his wife passed away 30 years ago and he still mourns her death to this day.
Alminas: From her bright smile in her youth to her old face with wrinkles... My love for her won't change over time...
  • The Mourning After: Alminas had a human wife named Ada who died 30 years prior to the beginning of the game, and whom he is still grieving.
  • Nice Guy: He’s known as a gentle and kind person who remains polite even when straightforwardly rejecting a love confession.
  • Really 700 Years Old: At 220 years old, Alminas is the oldest character in the game, but still retains a youthful Pretty Boy appearance. As a result, he feels detached from humans and it takes him a while to comprehend humanity’s motives and desires.
  • Red Baron: Because of his talent in archery, he is known as the "Star Archer".
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Alminas can speak to and understand birds.
  • Super Drowning Skills: He cannot swim and refuses to learn because the uncertainty of being in water makes him uncomfortable. When invited to a pool party by the Sakan, he stays on land and watches the whole time, to Alan’s bewilderment.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: After the war, it can be noted that Alminas is no longer as sombre as he was before.
  • You Remind Me of X: Magda resembles his late wife, especially when she dons a hairstyle that used to be the wife’s favorite, to the point Asteria asks Magda to leave the ball early so that Alminas wouldn’t see her and be reminded of his loss. Alminas however is fine with it and even gifts Magda his wife’s jewelry to go along with the hair.

    Lawrence

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ba091fff_71b3_4995_a11d_f949b0deed1a.png
"Miss Lynna is like a star in the sky, lofty and gorgeous. And you..."

Chinese Name: Laolunsi (Chinese transliteration of Lawrence)
Affiliation: Jorcastle Family
Species: Human
Preferred Subjects: Trivia, Business
Preferred Style: Noble, Lovely
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Element: Earth
Political Stance: Liberalism

Servant to the Jorcastle family, and Lynna's loyal attendant. Any person who tries to do Lynna harm will automatically become his enemy.

  • Beneath the Mask: Lawrence seems like a mere Professional Butt-Kisser, but is actually a thoughtful and reasonable person who is aware of how ridiculous his actions seem, though his desire to protect his lady outweighs all other reasonings.
  • Blackmail: Lynna’s biological mother exploits Lawrence for money which she spends on gambling and alcohol so that Lynna won’t learn the truth about her mother. He eventually has to go as far as giving away gifts from Lynna to get her mother out of debt.
  • The Confidant: He’s the only person Lynna ever shows weakness around and she confides all of her troubles and insecurities to him. In return, he always comforts her and tries to solve her problem by himself if possible.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: He admits in one letter that Magda’s help has made him feel guilty for a long time, not only because he failed to return her kindness, but also because he asks for her help even though she’s the "enemy" of Lynna, which he considers a betrayal he has to atone for with his whole life.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Aside from hyping Lynna up directly, he also subtly trash talks Magda to increase his lady’s confidence.
  • Double Agent: After she helps him resolve his issue with Lynna’s birth mother, he becomes Magda's "ears" in the Jorcastle and provides her with intel.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: He goes along with Lynna’s belief that her birth mother is an elegant noblewoman even though no one knows the truth better than him, and lets himself be exploited to protect her from the Awful Truth.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Lawrence worships the ground Lynna walks on, and almost everything he does is motivated by his loyalty and admiration to her. Even after plot events mean Magda has earned his personal gratitude, it's still impossible to increase his favour level and he still snubs Magda in public solely because Lynna hates her.
  • Professional Butt-Kisser: He never fails to hype Lynna up whenever she goes up against Magda.
  • Sliding Scale of Gameplay and Story Integration: Although Lawrence admits not hating Magda quite early on and often writes letters to her, his Relationship Values can’t be raised because in public, as a servant of Lynna, he is still her "enemy".
  • Stoic Spectacles: When not being Lynna’s Professional Butt-Kisser, he’s quite rational and attentive.
  • Subordinate Excuse: His first letter to Magda is essentially his proclaim that despite how wonderful she is, he will never be swayed by her charm because of his feelings for Lynna. Whether or not those feelings are romantic is unconfirmed, but we at least know she’s precious to him.
"[…] This heart will never pulse for you, even if only for a second. However, if only another lady speaks. No, with just one look, or a sigh, she can drive this heart to do anything, even if it's to go through fire and water. As long as this heart beats, it belongs to that lady. You can't contaminate its integrity. I will never let you do that."
  • Undying Loyalty: He is always on Lynna’s side, and anyone who hurts her either physically or emotionally will earn his ire. He also lets himself be financially exploited just to protect her feelings, and in fact, had Lynna given in to her hatred during her What You Are in the Dark moment, he would have been willing to commit the Murder by Inaction of Duchess Tilla with her.
