The Crypton Virtual Singer group as they're depicted in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series. This page will mostly detail their characterization as it is shown in Project DIVA: X.

For more information about their software counterparts and other fictional depictions of them, see their Crypton Future Media page. For tropes concerning their Project SEKAI counterparts, see here.

For tropes specifically on Hatsune Miku's other depictions, see here.

General

  • Insistent Terminology: Miku refers to herself and the others as "digital singers" in X. The term "Vocaloid" is never used by herself or others to describe them.
  • Interpretative Character: The digital singers' appearances change to varying degrees depending on their module, with their new appearance generally having something in common with their original character design. For example, a majority of Len's modules retain his spikey blonde hair as it's a signature part of his look. On the other hand, Miku tends to have the most drastic changes to her appearance across several modules, and a few have made her look like a completely different character.
  • Synthetic Voice Actor: Except for some opening cutscenes which feature their voice providers, all of the digital singers have their speech generated using their Vocaloid software.
  • Ship Tease: As several songs that pair the digital singers romantically have appeared in the series. For example, there's "Cantarella" and "Cendrillion" for Miku and KAITO, "Magnet" for Miku and Luka, and "Fire◎Flower" for Rin and Len.
  • True Companions: As always, the digital singers are shown to be a close group of individuals, with this being expressed in the game's opening and secret movies.

X Module Personality Types

  • Clothes Make the Maniac: X takes the idea of the Crypton digital singers being interpretative characters even further, as they not only change appearances with different modules, their personalities change as well based on the game's five different Auras, with those being Classic, Cute, Elegant, Cool, and Quirky. Classic is their default personality, while Cute is cheerful and sweet, and Elegant is graceful and charming. Cool and Quirky is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. However, the way the Cryptons act with these auras varies. For example, a Cool Aura Miku is more assertive and a little distant, while Cool Aura KAITO comes off as more of a narcissist.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: The Quirky Aura modules give the digital singers personalities like this in X.
  • The Cutie: For the female digital singers, this is their personality when given the aptly named Cute Aura modules.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Cool Aura modules for the female digital singers begin as more standoffish than the other versions of them, but they warm up to the player as their friendship levels are raised. Upon maxing out their friendship, they accept the player as their best friend and thank them for everything they've done for them.
  • Genki Guy: The Cute Aura modules for the male digital singers behave like this.
  • It's All About Me: Cool Aura Len and KAITO modules take on a more narcissistic personality type. They even become frustrated when left idle for too long, as they notice that the player isn't paying attention to them.
  • Stop Poking Me!: Regardless of module-type, the digital singers react negatively to being poked by the player at first, before playfully returning the gesture the second time around.
  • The Tease: Elegant Aura modules for the digital singers are more flirtatious, particularly when they are poked by the player; the second time they're poked they'll react by kissing their finger, poking the player back with it, and then winking. The female digital singers also blow the player kisses if they successfully clear a level.
  • Valley Girl: The digital singers speak like this when using the Cute Aura modules; even the male ones with a few "rad's" and "yo's" sprinkled in.

Hatsune Miku

Original CV: Saki Fujita

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miku_megamixplus_2.png
The protagonist of all the Project DIVA games, based on the avatar of her V2 package.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She has a close relationship with Rin in the series' original opening and secret movies. The two even almost kiss in one of them before being interrupted by an annoyed Luka. Whether they are in a relationship or if the scenes are meant to be viewed as a parody of the Pseudo-Romantic Friendship's between girls that are often depicted in these school settings isn't made clear.
  • Color Motif: She's often associated with green or cyan.
  • The Heart: She tries to be this in X but cannot stop the Kagamines from bickering with each other no matter what she does.
  • Literal-Minded: Is grossed out by the player saying that idols "ooze cuteness" in X, not realizing that it was a figure of speech until they clarified it to her.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She has had several suggestive songs and modules in the game throughout the series. For example, there's Ambivalence, which is the recommended module for "Brain Revolution Girl", a song with suggestive lyrics and choreography.
  • Nice Girl: Her most notable personality trait in X is her kind heart and consideration for those around her. She also immediately befriends the player upon meeting them and is unfailingly nice to them regardless of the dialogue options they choose. This is also implied to be her personality type in entries where less focus is put on her characterization.
  • The Protagonist: She's the center of the world the Project DIVA series is set in.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Of all the digital singers in the game, she tends to have the most drastic changes to her appearance across modules. Her Chat Noir and Hana-Kotoba modules take the cake, as she looks like a completely different character in both.

Kagamine Rin

Original CV: Asami Shimoda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagamine_rin_megamix_1.png
A character in the Project DIVA series, she is particularly close to Len, who she also resembles, however their relationship to each other is unclear.
  • Ambiguously Gay: She has a close relationship with Miku in the series' original openings and secret movies. The two even almost kiss in one of them before being interrupted by an annoyed Luka. Whether they are in a relationship or if the scenes are meant to be viewed as a parody of the Pseudo-Romantic Friendship's between girls that are often depicted in these settings isn't made clear.
  • Ambiguously Related: The series never makes it clear just what she and Len have to do with each other. The only clear thing is that they're practically inseparable. X plays into this more by giving the two actual characterization for their Classic modules, and their bickering teeters between a sibling rivalry and Belligerent Sexual Tension.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Her bickering with Len in X's main story seems reminiscent of this trope.
Rin: Why is your head always stuck in the clouds? And no, I don't mean the musical kind! Sometimes I think you'd slip on your own banana peel! Boys like you can be so ... UNAPPEALING!
Len: You think I'm an airhead? Typical girl response! You're such a space case, you'd stare at a carton of orange juice because it said "Concentrate!"
Rin: What?! Boys are SO rude! Ugh!
Len: Ech! Girls are LITERALLY impossible!
  • Color Motif: Orange, to differentiate her from Len.
  • Girliness Upgrade: "Future Style" Rin ditches her crop-top and shorts for a more Miku-styled outfit. She also has waist-length hair.
  • Lookalike Lovers: In songs where she and Len are a couple such as "Kagamine HachiHachi Flower Fight" and "Fire◎Flower".
  • She's All Grown Up: Her "Future Style" module, which is based on how Luka and Miku imagine an older Rin in "Rin-chan Nau", depicts Rin as an adult.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Is typically depicted as more tomboyish than Miku across the series, though a number of her modules have a girly twist to them.
  • Those Two Guys: Almost always paired off with Len in the series' cutscenes and promotional art. They also have several duets together in the games.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: According to Miku's dialogue in X, she argues with Len a lot. The players only get a glimpse of a particularly intense argument between them as they attempt to figure out a way to restore the Quirky Aura Cloud.

Kagamine Len

Original CV: Asami Shimoda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagamine_len_megamix_1.png
A character in the Project DIVA series, he is particularly close to Rin, who he also resembles, however their relationship to each other is unclear.
  • Ambiguously Related: The series never makes it clear just what he and Rin have to do with each other. The only clear thing is that they're practically inseparable. X plays into this more by giving the two actual characterization for their Classic modules, and their bickering teeters between a sibling rivalry and Belligerent Sexual Tension.
  • Color Motif: Yellow, to differentiate him from Rin.
  • Lookalike Lovers: In songs where he and Rin are a couple such as "Kagamine HachiHachi Flower Fight" and "Fire◎Flower".
  • Mr. Fanservice: Less so than the other characters, but not even he escapes this trope with his modules and some of his songs that made it into the series. For example, concerning songs, in X he has "Holy Lance Explosion Boy" and "Gigantic O.T.N.". Both songs have extremely sexual lyrics, and "Holy Lance Explosion Boy" has choreography to match it. As for modules, there is the infamous Punkish module.
  • Those Two Guys: Almost always paired off with Rin in the series' cutscenes and promotional art. They also have several duets together in the games.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: According to Miku's dialogue in X, he argues with Rin a lot. The players only get a glimpse of a particularly intense argument between them as they attempt to find a way to restore the Quirky Aura Cloud.

Megurine Luka

Original CV: Yū Asakawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/megurine_luka_megamix_1.png
One of the main characters in the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series who has appeared in every title to date.
  • Age Lift: While Luka's official character bio lists her as 20 years old by default, her After School Mode and Queen Bee modules depict her as a high school student.
  • Cool Big Sis: Len and Rin appear to see her as one in the F series, as Len refers to her as "Luka-nee". Her personality in X is also akin to this trope.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of the more fanservice-y Piapro characters along with MEIKO and she's been given several modules across the series to reflect this role.
  • Nice Girl: In X, her personality can be described as kind and reserved, a bit more so than MEIKO who is more outwardly confident.

KAITO

Original CV: Naoto Fuuga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/module_8_1.png
KAITO is a main character in the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series.
  • Character Death: His character in "Ashes to Ashes" dies of a heart attack at the end of the song.
  • Color Motif: As usual, he's associated with blue.
  • Leg Focus: The tallest of all the digital singers with long legs that appear to make up a majority of his body. The series isn't shy about emphasizing this aspect of his character design, as he does a lot of kicking in his choreography such as in "Snowman" and "Piano x Forte x Scandal".
  • Mark of the Supernatural: His Requiem module has one red eye, hinting that his character in the song "Ashes to Ashes" is not entirely human despite his appearance. In the song, his character is specifically a rustic music box that has taken on a human form.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Not as much of a fanservice character as Luka, MEIKO, or even Miku, though he does have a few modules that show off his body, the most infamous of these being Cyber Cat.
  • Nice Guy: His personality can be described as this in X, albeit in a different way than how he's usually portrayed in official works. He's quite smiley and cheerful, but not to the point of being a Genki Guy. As well, he comes off as a bit quirky, but he's aware of things that may be considered "weird" by others, like wearing pink ribbons in his hair and carrying around a teddy bear to give off as a "cute" aura. As well, one of his default gestures is a double thumbs-up.
  • Out of Focus: Even more so than usual in X in the song department, as he only has one song that isn't part of a medley. This is downplayed in the game's story mode, however, as he appears just as much as the other Virtual Singers do and even assists Miku alone in the segment where the Cute Aura Cloud needs to be restored.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: While he is this trope by default, some of his modules emphasize this aspect of him such as "Requiem".
  • Those Two Guys: He usually shows up with MEIKO in X, though MEIKO is absent during the main story sequence in which he and Miku work together to restore the "Cute" Aura Cloud. KAITO is similarly absent when MEIKO helps Miku and Luka restore the Elegant Aura Cloud.
  • Vague Age: While he has no official age, the description of his School Uniform★Parka module seems to imply that he may be above high school age, though the translator may have simply interpreted him as being such.

MEIKO

Original CV: Meiko Haigo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/meiko_megamix_1.png
MEIKO is a main character in the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series.
  • Color Motif: Red. The color also appears in the majority of her modules across the series.
  • Lady in Red: While she wears red by default, a majority of her modules also incorporate red into them.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of the more fanservice-y Piapro characters along with Luka and she's been given several modules across the series to reflect this role.
  • Nice Girl: In a different way from Luka, as she's a little less reserved and comes off as more confident in herself.
  • Those Two Guys: She usually shows up with KAITO in X, though she is absent during the main story sequence in which he works with Miku to restore the Cute Aura Cloud. KAITO is similarly absent when MEIKO helps Miku and Luka restore the Elegant Aura Cloud.
