Go To

Antoine

Brave young boy. Can be brash and bold. He's good friends with Euphrasie. He's the first person the Tarbes investigation team meet. He's also Siesta's kid brother.

Claudia

Antoine's mother.

Roseau

The Village Chief of Tarbes.
  • Conveniently Unverifiable Backstory: He claims his ancestor was from the East, past Rub' al Khali. This was probably a way his ancestors explained away their Japanese/Asianness and strange ideas(one moon).

Florine

Tarbes' medicine woman and an accomplished petty mage in her own right. Has a daughter with count Arthur.
  • The Medic: She has the most medicinal knowledge in the village, both in medicine itself and the healing properties of water magic.

Euphrasie

The daughter of Florine. Like he mother, she is also a mage.

Count Arthur Radley

Arthur of the Brilliant Flame

The lord of lands surrounding the village of Tarbes. Despite being a triangle fire mage, he abhors violence and spends his days studying botany.
  • Break the Badass: He was once a feared battle mage known as Arthur of the Brilliant Flame until he was captured by Gallia and spent many years in captivity. When he was finally released he was severely traumatized by his ordeal.
  • Call to Agriculture: These days, he uses his magic to cultivate plants instead of combat.
  • Hikikomori: He has an extremely difficult time dealing with most people as a result of his time as a prisoner of war. The people of Tarbes are remarkably sympathetic.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Arthur says that humans are fiercer than any dragon and more vicious than any manticore due to how cruel they can be to one another and other sentient beings.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: He was a POW that suffered inhumane torture at the hands of his captors. The sheer trauma has him suffer from extreme Agoraphobia, Anthropophobia and bouts of PTSD-induced panic attacks. Florine, Fernand and the Pixies he raised are the few who do not trigger him.
  • Papa Wolf: For the Pixie girls he raised and his bastard daughter, Euphraise, he can overcome his insecurities and fight with vigor. When Fernand threatens them, he shows him why he's called The Brilliant Flame.
  • Retired Badass: He used to be a mighty battle mage, but has since moved passed that and is content to study flowers in his fief. However, he can still muster a brilliant flame if necessary.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Ferdinand used to be his best friend, but their relationship soured after Ferdinand ruined himself socially and financially to save someone who was, effectively, no longer the man he knew.

Fernand

Fernand of the Bellows

Count Arthur's majordomo, close friend, and a line air mage, he assists his lord in his botany research.
  • Arc Villain: He is the main threat of the Tarbes Arc, and the reason that Sayuri became a villain in the first place.
  • Big Bad Friend: Arthur's best friend turns out to be the core of evil in Tarbes.
  • Character Death: He is killed by Count Arthur in a Wizard Duel.
  • Evil Plan: He is the one responsible for the destruction of Sayuri's garden and seeks to domesticate the Pixies in order to sell them so that he may finally wash his hands of his former friend.
  • Filler Villain: Tarbes is a filler arc with little effect on the story as a whole, so his Evil Plan is similarly small scale and affecting little. At least, only a little immediately. See Small Role, Big Impact
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Count Arthur kills him by turning his own spell against him. It helps that the spell is nothing more than a weaponized version of a spell the Arthur himself developed to create the conditions needed to grow a rare medicinal plant.
  • Humiliation Conga: He was once a feared battle mage known as Fernand of the Bellows and a comrade-in-arms of Count Arthur. When Arthur was captured by Gallia, Fernand used all of his family's wealth and influence to have him released. He had no where else to go but to a position as the butler of a broken man and minor noble.
  • Retired Badass Like Arthur, he was once a terror on the battle field, but unlike Arthur, it was not by choice. He had no where else to go after giving up everything to get Arthur out of prison.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: While he may be little more than a Filler Villain has actions have a major impact on the story, setting the stage for Halkegenia's first contact with the Pixies and other sapient mobs. His sale of the Pixies from Sayuri's Garden also sets in motion the chain of events leading to the exposure of Reconquista's plans in the second arc.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Has managed to figure out how to create a magical fuel-air bomb.
  • Walking Spoiler: This character sheet, by itself, would spoil most of the Tarbes arc.
