Characters in the Giana Sisters series.
Giana
Voiced by: Katie Leigh (Twisted Dreams)
- Age Lift: In the original game she was a teenager at youngest. Since the DS reboot, Giana is a preteen.
- Always Identical Twins: Averted. She is fraternal twins with Maria. They have different hair colours.
- Badass Adorable: She's cute as a button and readily takes on deadly obstacles, fearsome monsters and whatever challenges the games throw at her.
- Characterization Marches On: Looking at official art, Giana in the first game is a rebellious teen, which is a far cry from her Cheerful Child persona in future games.
- Artifact Title: "Punk Giana" seems more goth-inspired than punk-inspired post-DS.
- Cheerful Child: Giana is normally this way.
- Delinquent Hair: In the original game punk Giana had a mohawk.
- Early Installment Character-Design Difference: She received a huge redesign between the original game and the DS title. It's especially noticeable with punk Giana, who looks nothing like her original '80s punk incarnation.
- Expy: In terms of gameplay (and to a degree her red colour palette), she's similar to Mario from Super Mario Bros..
- Fiery Redhead: As punk Giana. She has red hair, a red colour palette, and is certainly Hot-Blooded. She even literally has fire powers.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish sibling to Maria's responsible one.
- Kid Hero: She goes on adventures to save her sister.
- Perky Goth:
- As punk Giana, though she's more "spunky" than "perky".
- Cute Giana might count as well. Supplementary material mentions that she's into "spooky" things.
- Plucky Girl: She's a spunky girl in both forms, but especially in her normal incarnation.
- Personality Powers: Punk Giana is a hot-blooded girl with fire powers.
- Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Post-redesign, punk Giana's hair is longer than cute Giana's.
- Super Drowning Skills: In the first two games she can't swim.
- Superpowered Evil Side: Subverted with punk Giana. She looks this way, but she's more mischievous than malevolent.
- Super Not-Drowning Skills: In Twisted Dreams, she can breathe indefinitely underwater.
- Youthful Freckles: In DS, but not in Twisted Dreams.
Maria
Voiced by: Katie Leigh (Twisted Dreams)
- Always Identical Twins: Averted. She and Giana are fraternal twins. The two have different hair colours.
- Age Lift: From a teen to a kid.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She was absent in DS, but was brought back for Twisted Dreams.
- Damsel in Distress: She ends up kidnapped in Twisted Dreams.
- Divergent Character Evolution: Maria was a simple Palette Swap in the first game. Twisted Dreams redesigned her so that she has longer hair than Giana, wears a red dress, and has a ribbon in her hair. Her personality has also been fleshed out a bit more in supplementary material.
- Expy: Of Luigi from Super Mario Bros.. They're both green-colored fraternal twins and are Player 2 characters.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible sibling to Giana's foolish.
- Kid Hero: She's the same age as Giana and can also go on adventures.
- Perky Goth: Unlike Giana, Maria dresses in gothic, dark red clothes on default. She has a similar personality to her sister nevertheless.
Giana and Maria's father
- Abusive Parents: He's implied to be abusive towards his children.
- Unnamed Parent: His name is never revealed.
