Hamaji
- Action Girl: Hell yeah.
- Badass Adorable: She's pretty cute normally, but She Cleans Up Nicely in a kimono. When going after Shino, Hamaji wears the pink kimono that Shino bought her. She hikes up the trailing ends of the kimono so that she can move easily and charges through fire, gunfire and a whole lotta danger to find her friend.
- Blush Sticker: From frostbite.
- Country Mouse: Hamaji is quickly overwhelmed after arriving at Edo. It doesn't help that she's lost and can't read the instructions on the letter from her brother.
- Heroic BSoD: Enters one after her final conversation with Itezuru and helping her brother kill the fuse.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: She is constantly mistaken for a young man by others to her annoyance. However, Hamaji doesn't suffer from A-Cup Angst.
- Morality Pet: To Shino. Shino murders many people over the course of the movie and eats their souls, but he tries his best to rein his hunger in around Hamaji.
- Never Learned to Read
- Parental Abandonment: Her parents are never mentioned: Hamaji and Dousetsu were raised by their grandfather.
- Roofhopping: When chasing after Itezuru.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: Looks quite spiffy in a pink kimono with her hair done up. She even gives Shino pause when dolled-up.
- Wholesome Crossdresser: Gets dressed up in her brother's clothes so that she can sneak into the Red Light District with her brother.
Shino
- Airplane Arms
- Attractive Bent-Gender: When cast as Princess Fuse.
- But Now I Must Go: Shino leaves Edo after his confrontation with Iesada and the subsequent conversation with Hamaji. His whereabouts are unknown, but Hamaji receives a letter from him after a one year skip.
- Half-Human Hybrid: Like all fuse.
- Horror Hunger: As a fuse, Shino hungers constantly for human souls. Souls are forcefully ripped out of the body, leaving a giant hole in the body, killing the person.
- Malevolent Masked Man: To the thugs that he beats up at the beginning of the movie and to the people that he preys on, Shino is this.
- Morality Pet: Hamaji. Shino tries to control his hunger around Hamaji, whose soul constantly tempts him. He goes on killing sprees to gather souls so that he can gorge himself, hoping to assauge his hunger so that he doesn`t give in and kill Hamaji.*
- Not Worth Killing: Ultimately decides not to kill Iesada and eat his soul. Shino comments that eating Iesada's soul would transfer the latter's weakness.
- Real Men Wear Pink
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Wholesome Crossdresser: Portrays Princess Fuse in a play.
Dousetsu
- Babies Ever After: Has a baby with Funamushi. His baby has one heck of an uppercut, as Dousetsu can attest.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Gets distracted by prostitutes when hunting for fuse and knocks up Funamushi, but is willing to take responsibility for his actions and marry Funamushi when she reveals that she is pregnant with his child. He vows to get his act together and try to be a good dad.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Dousetsu doesn't seem to be the sharpest tack in the drawer, but he is a competent sword-fighter and manages to defeat two samurai with ease when his fiancee is in danger.
- Distracted by the Sexy: Gets distracted while in the Red Light District. He's supposed to be hunting fuse and keeping an eye on his sister, but he allows himself to get dragged off by an old courtesan who promises him a good time with a sexy new courtesan. Unfortunately for Dousetsu, the 'sexy new courtesan' turns out to be the old lady in heavy makeup.

- Tranquil Fury: Demonstrated when Funamushi and his friends are in danger. He effortlessly takes down two samurai, catches one of their swords in mid-air and tries to force Commissioner Aboji to untie his friends and help carry moat water to put out the fire in the keep.
Funamushi
- Babies Ever After: Funamushi reveals to Dousetsu that she is pregnant with his baby. When helping Hamaji dress up for a confrontation with Shino, Funamushi admits that she's scared, but she has decided to be honest with her feelings and try to be a good mother. Sometime during the one year skip, she has the baby.
- Damsel in Distress: She, along with her friends, are tied up to trees after trying to stop Commissioner Aboji from shooting Shino. While the keep is burning down around them.
- Plucky Girl
- Youthful Freckles
Makuwari
- Every Japanese Sword is a Katana: Subverted. His sword bears similarities to a nodachi: it is much longer than a katana and is carried on his back instead of on the hip.
- Eye Scream: Shino slashes his eye near the beginning of the movie. Makuwari attains an eyepatch over his ruined eye afterwards.
- Heel–Face Turn: When it becomes clear that Commissioner Aboji's gunmen will kill him along with Shino, Makuwari decides that working for the shogunate is overrated and informs Shino of a path into the keep.
- Heel–Face Door-Slam: Makuwari dies soon after allowing Shino to escape, but not before setting fire to the keep.
- Humans Are Bastards: Implies this when Makuwari tells Shino that he is human and used to being betrayed.
- Ronin
Meido
- Chekhov's Gunman: Meido is seen very early on, writing and silk-screening some posters. It turns out that Meido is writing down Hamaji's adventures in a novel titled Fuse Teppou Musume No Torimonochou. She is occasionally shown walking around Edo, but isn't properly introduced until midway through the movie when her posters catch Hamaji's eye.
- I Should Write a Book About This: Meido records Hamaji's story in a novel.
- Writer's Block: Suffers from this when trying to come up with a conclusion to her story. She overcomes this after getting inspiration from the letter Shino sends Hamaji.
Itezuru
- Airplane Arms: When Roofhopping.
- Anime Hair: Holy god, her pompadour.
- Face Death with Dignity
- Half-Human Hybrid: Like all fuse.
- High-Class Call Girl
- Off with Her Head!!: Dousetsu decapitates her. Her head is later displayed with the other fuse heads.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. Itezuru leads Hamaji and Dousetsu on a merry chase across the Red Light District, but doesn't put up a fight once they have caught up to her.
- Roof Hopping: Engages in this when running from Hamaji and Dousetsu.
Iesada Tokugawa
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
- Madness Mantra: Murasamemaru, murasamemaru, murasamemaru...I will drive out the imposters.
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: Iesada isn't evil, per se, just obsessive and mentally unbalanced.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Iesada isn't exactly a shining example of mental stability. He locks himself in a room, continually praying to a painting and muttering about proving himself to be the only 'real' one. He is also responsible for the bounty on the fuse and the closest thing the movie has to a Big Bad.
- Villainous Breakdown: Is reduced to a gibbering, thumb-sucking mess after Shino defeats him.
