Massive Dynamic
Massive Dynamic
Massive Dynamic is a multi-billion-dollar corporation founded by William Bell, and is responsible for research, development and production in a variety of different high-tech fields. These include, but are not limited to; weapons testing, robotics, medical equipment, aeronautics, genetics and pharmaceuticals.
Tropes associated with Massive Dynamic:
- Big Good: Very sinister version, but still probably the closest thing the series has to one.
- For Science!: "We create science."
- MegaCorp: Builds everything.
- Phlebotinum du Jour: ...Everything including mad science.
- The current CEO of Massive Dynamic. See Main Characters: A Side.
William Bell
- "Walter, when we were young and foolish with too much power and too many dreams that no one could stand in the way of... we needed each other. "
Portrayed by Leonard Nimoy
The former CEO and founder of Massive Dynamic, the leading manufacturer in cutting edge technology and military weaponry. An old lab partner and friend of Walter Bishop, he and Walter conducted numerous experiments back in the day in an attempt to learn the secrets of the alternate universe.
While Walter was working with Fringe Division, Bell however took refuge in the alternate universe to gain a footing.
Tropes associated with Bell:
- Anti-Hero: Like Walter he's a good guy with shady methods.
- Back from the Dead: In "Os", he returned by possessing Olivia.
- Badass Bookworm: About a dozen unfortunate alternate Fringe Division agents learned the hard way not to fuck with old man Bell. He is a genius.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a great, but very eccentric, scientist.
- The Chessmaster: Orchestrates complex gambits to help the world.
- Or destroy it.
- Corrupt Corporate Executive: Played with in Season 1 and part of Season 2, but eventually shown that while he's benevolent, he is without a doubt morally grey. When they meet again, Walter considers him one.
- Crazy-Prepared: Back-up plans everywhere.
- Deadpan Snarker: Quite sarcastic.
- Determinator: This man has not come back to life once, or twice, but three times. The guy just won't stay dead.
- Godhood Seeker: His "Neogenesis" plan that he attempted to undergo with David Robert Jones was an attempt to collapse both sides A and B in favor of creating a brand new universe controlled entirely by William Bell. He intended to populate this new universe with creatures of his own making, and believed it was his destiny to be a God.
- Guile Hero: Guile. Heroic.
- Grand Theft Me: Possesses Olivia's body via his "soul magnets".
- Heroic Sacrifice: Twice.
- In "Over There", Bell gave his life to help the Fringe team cross back to the prime universe. Cue the outcries of "He's Just Hiding", which were right. Sort of.
- In "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide", after possessing Olivia's body, Bell instigates the Journey to the Center of the Mind to save her while fully aware that doing so will kill him. He lies to Walter in order to accomplish this, claiming that something can be done to save his consciousness, even though it was never possible.
- Intoxication Ensues: Both he and Walter are quite proud of their past LSD trips.
- Jerkass: Maybe a little bit... Whilst in Olivia's body, his shameless hitting on Astrid certainly counts as awkward as hell... Secondly, despite knowing the risks, he still took over Olivia's body without a second's hesitation. And of course, many could still argue his opening of Massive Dynamic right after chopping up Walter's brain.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: On the other hand, Possessing Olivia was never supposed to hurt her. When it does, he's perfectly willing to pull a Heroic Sacrifice to save her. He shouldn't have taken her body to begin with, but.... He's selfish, not evil.
- Mad Scientist: Fond of mad science.
- Made of Explodium: His pistol shells, as several unfortunate Fringe Division mooks discovered.
- Manipulative Bastard: Spiking the tea he shared with Olivia during their first meeting with this "soul magnets" certainly counts. He practically planned on possessing her right at the start.
- Man of Wealth and Taste: He drinks MacCutcheon whiskey.
- Not Quite Dead: Keeps coming back from the grave.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Licorice, same as Walter.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: He also designed the Shapeshifter technology, and Walter suspects have he aided Walternate in the development of the Wave Sink Device No. 3.
Nina Sharp
- "Your father made some regrettable choices in the past, but his brilliance is undeniable. It was that intellect that William Bell believed in. And frankly, so do I."
Portrayed by Blair Brown
The Chief Operating Officer of Massive Dynamic, she is in fact the de facto Man In Charge of it during William Bell's absence - which is almost always. While her motives were at first foggy at best, she has proven herself to be a valuable ally to Fringe Division and will help them any way she can.
Tropes associated with Nina:
- Ambiguously Evil: Hard to tell whose side she's on at times.
- An Arm and a Leg: Is missing at least part of her right arm if not the entire limb. In the pilot she claims it was amputated after discovering she had cancer. We eventually learn she was lying about this (see Portal Cut below).
- Artificial Limbs: Her right arm was replaced with a robotic replica.
- Big Good: As the leader of Massive Dynamic.
- Cyborg: Her right arm is prosthetic.
- The Dragon: To William Bell.
- Dragon-in-Chief: She is basically in charge.
- Enigmatic Minion: What are her true goals?
- Guile Hero: Guile. Heroic.
- Manipulative Bitch: Had shades of this, particularly in early episodes.
- Mysterious Past: With regards to William Bell.
- Portal Cut: How she lost her arm.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's trying to save her universe but does some seriously shady things to achieve that.
Brandon Fayette
- "Do you understand you're asking me if I can repair a piece of technology that is entirely unlike anything that has ever existed here on Earth? (Beat) Now that I have one that works, I can do it in three hours... tops."
Portrayed by Ryan McDonald
The chief science engineer of Massive Dynamic, Brandon works directly under Nina Sharp. When tasked, he assists Fringe Division in any way he can.
Tropes associated with Brandon:
- Deadpan Snarker: When accused of taking out Shapeshifters. To be fair, the idea is kind of ridiculous.
- The Dragon: To Nina Sharp, and to an extent, Walter.
- For Science!: His reason.
- Proud to Be a Geek: Is very proud to be a geek.
- Red Herring: Also somewhat counts as a Funny Moment: No, Brandon isn't the one going around whacking shape shifters. He's just trying to enjoy his sandwich...
