Various animals and mystical creatures exist in the forests of Fox Fires
Animal characters
An orphaned raccoon dog who sets out on a journey to return the fox fires.
- Gene Hunting: Raate wants to use the northern lights to visit her dead parents.
- Happily Adopted: Loves her adoptive family very much, and is tempted to return to them on multiple occasions on her journey.
- I Am Not Weasel: Raate is constantly misidentified as a fox, or less often, a wolverine.
- Interspecies Adoption: Was raised by Kaarna and Paju.
- Misplaced Wildlife: Raccoon dogs are native to southeast Asia, the comic takes place in northern Europe. Lampshaded in how often animals mistake Raate for another species.
Otava's mother, and Raate's adoptive mother.
- Almighty Mom: Won't back down from an angry mob.
- Beary Friendly: Is a kind and gentle bear.
- Gentle Giant: Despite being a large bear, she's very gentle and protective.
- Interspecies Adoption: Adopted Raate.
Kaarna's shy bear cub who likes to tease his adopted sister Raate.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Is this to Raate.
- Beary Friendly: While he likes to tease, he's overall a very loving bear.
- Big Little Brother: Despite being younger than Raate, he's a much larger species.
A diurnal short eared owl who helps raise Raate. When Raate runs away, Paju searches for her.

- Interspecies Adoption: Helped raise Raate.
A storytelling lynx who ominously appears and vanishes on Raate's journey. Valko warns Raate to stay away from him.
- The Jinx: While it's never acknowledged in-universe (except maybe by Valko), trouble often seems to follow his brief appearances.
- The Storyteller: He tells stories to crowds of animals early in the story.
A crane, and the king of birds in the forest.
- Curse: Has the power to make any bird flightless.
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: His eyes glow when exercising his powers. They also glow when threatening Raate.
- True Sight: Can see anyone rendered invisible within Metsänpeitto.
- Tsundere: Is this upon his final conversation with Raate.
- Sorcerer King: Is the king of birds, and exercises fair punishment with his powers.
A woodpecker, and right-hand man to Kuura. His pecking serves as a gavel of sorts for trials.
- Number Two: To Kuura.
A magpie, framed for stealing the Silver Stick. Raate helps him recover it, and in return he guides her to Valko.
- Clear My Name: Sets off with Raate to do this.
- Frameup: Framed by Mustika and Noki.
- Meaningful Name: Tuike means "twinkle". Fitting, as he has a diamond shaped mark on his chest.
- The Exile: Temporarily banished from Lintukoto, and sent on a journey to prove his innocence.
- Thieving Magpie: Subverted: He is suspected of stealing, but is found innocent.
Two jackdaws that steal the Silver Stick and frame Tuikel, as revenge on the magpies of the forest.
- Frameup: Frame Tuikel.
- Evil Duo: Operate as a pair.
- Freudian Excuse: After a magpie steals their food (that their brother died to get) for an offering to the sky gods, they set out to frame the magpies for stealing the Silver Stick.
A brazen otter that Raate befriends.
- Dark and Troubled Past: She lost her sister to a fox when she was very young.
- Doesn't Trust Those Guys: Distrusts Raate, due to her apparent similarity to a fox.
- Like Father, Unlike Son: Her mother is much calmer and friendlier.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Is untrusting and quick to judge and first, but grows friendlier.
Vehka's wise mother.
- Befriending the Enemy: After foiling two wolve's plan to eat her and Vehka, Lumme offers them fish and sends them on their way.
- Like Father, Unlike Son: Has a wise and calm personality, unlike her daughter who is brasher and untrusting.
Two wolves who try to use Raate and eat her otter friends.
- Defeat Means Respect: After Lumme thwarts them with a spell and offers them fish, they begrudgingly thank her and accept.
- Evil Duo: Not quite evil, but still an antagonistic pair.
- Fat and Skinny: Neither is prominently fat or slim, but one is definitely thinner than the other.
A seal who believes herself to be the source of the fox fires, and travels to the otter pond every year for the Shining Skies ceremony to summon them. When the fox fires dissappear, she discovers that she wasn't really the source, but thanks to Raate finds new purpose as a storyteller.
She was called Loiste one of the two times her name was mentioned, leaving the true spelling unknown.
- God Guise: Was believed to be able to summon the northern lights, and a ceremony would be held for her to do so.
- Prone to Tears: Is driven to tears very easily.
- The Storyteller: After realizing that she doesn't have powers, she becomes a storyteller for the otters.
A lost black cat with mysterious powers. Tags along with Raate in hopes of finding his home on the journey.
- Cats Are Magic: He's a witch's cat, which gives him a variety of magical abilities, which get stronger when the moon is out.
- Cats Hate Water: Even despises walking through wet grass.
- Healing Hands: Well, paws. The only injury he hasn't been able to heal so far was a dragon bite.
- Power Glows: His footpads glow when using his power.
- The Darkness Gazes Back: Upon their first meeting, Hiili scares Raate when she notices his eyes in the darkness.
Supernatural creatures
A mystical fox said to live far up north. The fox fires are said to be a product of his flaming fur, and are so named after him.
- Fantastic Foxes
- Wreathed in Flames: He is said to have this appearance.
A forest elf. She attempts to eat Ratte, before Tuikel intervenes. She then answers Ratte's questions and warns her of the dangers on her journey.
- Creepy Good: Despite being very creepy, she attempts to be generous to Raate, and offers her a fish.
- Grimmification: Is very monstrous and terrifying for a creature called an "elf".
- Intangible Theft: Appears to be able to steal voices.
- The Fair Folk: Despite being a forest elf, she has the appearance of a mossy behemoth with a skull for a head. She devours anyone who gets lost wandering her forest, and has an eery ability to rob victims of their voices and press the darkness around them..
- You No Take Candle: Doesn't speak the typical animal language very well.
A shapeshifting water spirit. Lumme tells a group of otter cubs about it.
- Early-Bird Cameo: When Valko gives Raate a vision of the dangers of the north, Näkki's face can be seen.
- Hazardous Water: Is said to drown otter cubs that venture into its waters.
- Scare 'Em Straight: Lumme tells young otters about the näkki as a cautionary tale.
- Shapeshifting: Uses this ability.
Elf-like creatures. They inhabit saunas and maintain them.
House Fey: Although the one encountered doesn't seem to inhabit a sauna regularly used by humans, it still dwells in and maintains an otherwise man-made structure.
