Queen's Blood

Introduced in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as one of its new minigames, Queen's Blood is a card game popular across the Planet. Throughout the game, its players can be found and challenged as part of a sidequest that runs alongside the main story.

    In General
  • Affectionate Parody: Their quirky personalities and obsession over what is basically a children's card game is clearly meant to emulate opponents found in a Card Battle Game series.
  • Chuunibyou: Something of a Running Gag is just how over-the-top players of Queen's Blood can be. Many of the players wouldn't be out of place in a series like Yu-Gi-Oh!. Hilariously, the players' hammy attitudes towards the game somehow manage to rub off on Cloud and his friends when they play.
  • The Gimmick: Almost all of them have some sort of humorous gimmick to distinguish themselves.
  • Incoming Ham: Let's just say that the players of Queen's Blood are some of the most colorful people that Cloud will come across. Often it is hard to tell if they are just simply roleplaying or are really that eccentric.
  • Serial Escalation: The players just keep on getting weirder and weirder as Cloud travels across the Planet, eventually facing unusually smart animals, a Sephiroth Clone, and the undead.
  • Serious Business: Part of their humor among the Queen's Blood players is that they tend to take the card game way too seriously. For example, one player in the Crow's Nest legitimately wants to use the game as a way to negotiation peace with Shinra. Although, a couple players are justified for their behavior since they are aware there is an actual dangerous curse placed on the card game that has resulted in several people dying, including the creator of Queen's Blood, Lidrehl Balmon.
  • Spirited Competitor: Unsurprisingly, they tend to be overly competitive when it comes to their favorite card game.
  • To Be a Master: Nearly all of them aspire to be the world's greatest champion in Queen's Blood.

Lore Characters

    The Shadowblood Queen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shadowblood_queen.png
The vengeful spirit of a tyrannical queen overthrown and executed by her subjects, bound to a one-of-a-kind Queen's Blood card patterned after her.
  • Ambiguously Human: Given the time frame of when she was alive, it is possible she could have been a Cetra or a magical human. Then there is the legend of her blood creating myriad fiends after her execution, and that she is unable to enter the Lifestream after death, which sounds suspiciously similar to Jenova.
  • Arc Villain: She's the primary antagonist of the entire Queen's Blood quest chain in 'Rebirth.
  • Artifact Domination: Her spirit is bound to the Queen's Blood card patterned after her, and eventually possesses Regina's body.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: As the spirit of an ancient monarch possessing the body of an ace player of a monster Card Battle Game, and proving shockingly adept at said game for having been dead for centuries, the Shadowblood Queen is one to the Pharaoh from Yu-Gi-Oh!—though unlike him, she is an evil tyrant.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Unlike every other Queen's Blood player, the Queen's deck is full of unobtainable cards designed specifically to improve the performance of her own card, which she also always gets to put on the field before the player's first turn.
  • The Corruption: She uses unique cards that are based on the Summon cards, but all have the effect of de-powering cards in their zones of effect instead of their normal effects.
  • Demonic Possession: She seeks to corrupt Regina over the course of the Queen's Blood tournament subplot, serving as the final boss after hijacking her body to face off against Cloud. After Cloud beats her, the spirit of the Emerald Witch who led the rebellion against her in-life—also bound to a Queen's Blood card—tries to exorcise her, but fails until Vincent intervenes.
  • Fallen Hero: According to Lidrehl Balmon's ghost, the Queen was once a kind and benevolent ruler who loved her subjects and was in turn adored by them... until one day she abruptly changed—becoming a ruthless tyrant who saw her subjects as nothing more than fodder for her conquests.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: In life, she was a tyrant who ruled over what's now the Gongaga region, until her subjects—led by the Emerald Witch—overthrew and executed her.
  • Life Drinker: In order to resurrect herself, she's been draining the life force of those who come into possession of her card, mentally dominating them and either driving them insane or outright taking over their bodies before killing them.
  • Maker of Monsters: According to legend, the myriad fiends that terrorize the world were born from her spilled blood when she was executed.
  • Noodle Incident: What exactly turned her from a benevolent ruler to a ruthless tyrant is never elaborated on.
  • Outside-Context Problem: While ghosts are nothing new to the world of FF7, the Shadowblood Queen merits special mention for being the only antagonist to try to Take Over the World through a Card Battle Game. She also can't be defeated in a fight, but instead through said card game.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Her disembodied spirit is bound to the one-of-a-kind Queen's Blood card made in her likeness, though she seeks to resurrect herself by possessing the bodies of those who obtain her card and consuming their life-force. After being defeated, the Emerald Witch's spirit renders the Shadowblood Queen's inert—signified by green-white chains appearing on the latter's card.
  • Terms of Endangerment: She snidely refers to Cloud as "little puppet"—demonstrating awareness of Sephiroth's hold over him.
  • Vengeful Ghost: Like the spirits of the Gi Tribe, she was Barred from the Afterlife and persists as a vengeful spirit seeking to resurrect herself and reclaim her throne.

    The Emerald Witch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emerald_witch.png
The spirit of a benevolent witch who led a revolution against the Shadowblood Queen, bound to a one-of-a-kind Queen's Blood card patterned after her.
  • Ambiguously Human: Given the time frame she was alive and being a wielder of "arcane magic," it is quite possible she might have been a Cetra, or a human skilled in using materia or some other magic system that has been lost to time.
  • The Ghost: Literally. Unlike the Shadowblood Queen, the Emerald Witch's spirit is never heard speaking.
  • Good Counterpart: Like the Shadowblood Queen, she is a spirit bound to a one-of-a-kind Queen's Blood card. Unlike the Shadowblood Queen, she is wholly benevolent and seeks to stop her nemesis from making a comeback.
  • Good Witch Versus Bad Witch: The Emerald Witch was a benevolent sorceress who led a rebellion against the evil Shadowblood Queen—a tyrannical Sorcerous Overlord—and saw to it that she was executed. However, the Shadowblood Queen's vengeful spirit was Barred from the Afterlife and began plotting to make a comeback through the Queen's Blood card made in her likeness, so the Emerald Witch's spirit incarnated as a Queen's Blood card to oppose her once again.
  • Hero of Another Story: She was a heroic sorceress who fought against an evil queen many centuries before the events of the games.
  • Posthumous Character: She's been dead for countless centuries, but hasn't passed on to the Lifestream due to her nemesis also persisting.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Her spirit is bound to the Queen's Blood card made in her likeness, and is the only thing able to stop the Shadowblood Queen's rise to power.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: Considering all the Yu-Gi-Oh! shoutouts permeating the side quest, she is one to the Spirit of the Ring. Another spirit bound to a likeminded object to the nemesis they faced long ago, but where the Spirit uses the Pharoah's return to usurp his power, The Emerald Witch waits to stop her nemesis from returning to conquer the world.

Major Players

    Regina Konigin

Voiced By: Amber May (English), Riho Sugiyama (Japanese)Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/regina_rebirth.jpg

The reigning champion of Queen's Blood, and the self-proclaimed Queen of Cards. She frequently runs into Cloud during his journey.

  • The Ace: In regards to Queen's Blood, as she is the undefeated champion. That is until Cloud came along.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: Her outfit keeps her midriff bare to emphasize her femininity.
  • Color Motifs: She wears a red jacket and has her hir dyed with pink streaks (pink being closer to red in the chromatic wheel). This also serves as Foreshadowing to her being possessed by the Shadowblood Queen, a character clad in all red.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: Of Yugi Muto. She's the young champion of a popular card game possessed by the spirit of an ancient ruler with a connection to said game. However, unlike Yugi, she suffers from extreme insecurity and an obsession with winning. Also, her posessive spirit is malevolent and does not have her best interests at heart.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She is pretty arrogant when Cloud first meets her on the Shinra-8, but does lighten up over time during their next encounters.
  • Demonic Possession: She becomes possessed by the Shadowblood Queen at the end of the Queen's Blood sidequest. Cloud and Vincent were able to save Regina after defeating the ghostly queen.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Her first name "Regina" is Latin for queen, while her last name 'Konigin' is German for queen. So her full name could be translated as "Queen Queen." Doubles as a Meaningful Name.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Despite her prideful attitude, Regina is actually a very insecure woman who believes she has to keep on winning Queen's Blood otherwise she will end up becoming "nobody." It is due to her insecurities that Regina seeked out and took possession of the haunted Shadowblood Queen card in the first place.
  • King of Games: Or "Queen of Cards" in her case. Regina is the renowned champion of the most popular Card Battle Game on the Planet. The only person who has been about to defeat her in Queen's Blood is Cloud.
  • Meaningful Name: Both her first and surname means "queen," which is fitting for the champion of Queen's Blood. And also fitting for someone who is two queens from different places in one body.
  • Mirror Character: To Cloud. Despite their obvious differences, they actually have a lot in common. Both are extremely skilled and aloof individuals, but suffers from having an Inferiority Superiority Complex. As their respective journeys goes on, both slowly become friendlier over time. Additionally, they both are haunted by a sinister force that wants to take control of their bodies through Demonic Possession.
  • Red Baron: The "Queen of Cards" which is a reference to the Final Fantasy VIII character The Queen of Cards and a not so subtly reference to the "King of Games.",
  • The Rival: Becomes a rival to Cloud in regards to Queen's Blood—being the current champion and his most frequent opponent in the card game. After their game in the Shinra-8 she even seems to consider him a Worthy Opponent and agrees to pair up with him for a Queen's Blood minigame in Costa del Sol.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Has golden irises and is the holder of the supernatural Shadowblood Queen card.
  • Supermodel Strut: She's seen walking with a confident, hip-swaying strut that emphasizes her confidence and arrogance.

    Lidrehl Balmon

Voiced By: Christian Rummel (English) Foreign VAs

The inventor of Queen's Blood, inspired by an old legend from the Gongaga Region that, unfortunately for him, proved more fact than fiction.

  • Disappears into Light: If Cloud defeats him in a game of Queen's Blood, Lidrehl's ghost disappears into wisps of Lifestream.
  • Ghostly Goals: Unable to stop the Shadowblood Queen's machinations in-life, Lidrehl's ghost bides his time and searches for a worthy challenger, entrusting the Emerald Witch's card with Vincent Valentine to keep it safe. He selects Cloud to be his champion at the Kalm Inn and sends visions to him warning him of what is to come, eventually challenging him to a Queen's Blood match in the Gold Saucer's haunted inn in order to test his mettel.
  • Posthumous Character: He's been dead for years, having starved to death playing Queen's Blood for days on end.
  • Sanity Slippage: Lidrehl becomes more manic and frantic as the Shadowblood Queen's hold over him grows.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: He seems to loosely be based off of Maximillion Pegasus, another creator of a popular card game who based their creation off historical legends and in doing so re-introduced dangerous ancient magic into the modern world. Additionally, the protagonists of their stories need to defeat the creators at their own card game. But while Pegasus was initially an antagonist in his series, Lidrehl was a good man all along who spent his final days trying to undo his mistake.

    Cameron

Voiced By: Unknown

The ace Queen's Blood player at Junon who resides at Crow's Nest. Defeating him gives the first Lindrelh vision.

  • The Ace: He's built up as being the best Queen's Blood player in the Junon region, and is a previous Queen's Blood champion.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Up until him, Queen's Blood is just a silly minigame, but defeating him for the first time is what first triggers the first vision of Lidrehl Balmon and starts the "serious" plotline involving Queen's Blood. Downplayed due to the the absurd nature of the Queen's Blood plot makes the whole thing still seem humorous.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the first person to tell you about Lidrehl Balmon, and how he disappeared soon after creating Queen's Blood.
  • Only One Name: He's only known as Cameron and isn't given a surname.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: If he defeats Cloud, he'll act very smug about it
Cameron: Don't take it too hard, I'm just that much better than you.
  • Worthy Opponent: He claims to have been traveling all over the world in search of playing against a worthy Queen's Blood player.

    Navalan

Voiced By: Unknown

The ace Queen's Blood player at Corel who resides in North Corel. Defeating him gives the second Lindrelh vision.

  • The Ace: Chadley claims he's the ace player of the Corel region, and he won't even accept a challenge from Cloud until he's of high enough rank.

  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He's always shirtless, showing his scrawny, monk physique.

    Wize 3. 0

Voiced By: Unknown

A Queen's Blood player aboard the Shinra-8 then later in the Dustbowl. It's a robot with aspirations of conquering the world by becoming the best Queen's Blood player on the Planet. Fortunately, it's bad at both. Defeating it in the Dustbowl will give the third Lindrelh vision.

  • High Hopes, Zero Talent: Putting aside how one could conquer the world through Queen's Blood, Wize isn't even good at the game to begin with considering it's on a losing streak. He at least gets better at playing the game by the time Cloud finds him again but still far from reaching his goal.
  • His Name Is...: When Wize tries to provide more information on the whereabouts of the Shadowblood Queen card, the robot suddenly short circuits and forgot all about the information it gathered on Lindrelh. It is implied that the Shadowblood Queen caused Wize to have the unexpected shutdown.
  • Missing Steps Plan: 1) Become the best Queen's Blood player in the world. 2) ???? 3) World domination.
  • Mr. Exposition: After receiving the Lindrelh vision, Wize will do a search on the creator of Queen's Blood and will reveal to Cloud how exactly Lindrelh died and the existence of the Shadowblood Queen card.
  • Take Over the World: Its ultimate goal, not that it'll achieve it any time soon.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Initially, Wize is an easy player to beat during the Queen's Blood tournament on Shinra-8. Apparently, the robot went through several upgrades when encounter again at the Dustbowl, becoming a much more challenging opponent at the card game.

    The Monster of Chaos

A mysterious player that Cloud needs to defeat to obtain the Emerald Witch card to end the Shadowblood Queen's curse. It turns out that this player is none other than Vincent Valentine.

A Queen's Blood player in Kalm. He's infamous around Kalm for crying easily.

    Zahira

Voiced By: Alejandra Reynoso (English), Unknown (Japanese)

A Queen's Blood player in Kalm. She's huge fan of Kalm's bailey.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Most Queen's Blood players are quirky and dramatic, but she brings it to a new level. When Cloud finds her, she has surrounded herself with cardboard boxes to her "barricade" and will be upset when you unavoidably kick them off to talk to her.
  • The Gimmick: She's obsessed and proud of Kalm's curtain wall and most of her dialogue involves talking about it.
  • Large Ham: She speaks in an over-the-top and dead serious manner when it comes to Queen's Blood and how she views herself as the "wall" of Kalm. It's unclear if she's just weird or roleplaying, but if it's the latter then she never breaks her character.
  • Only One Name: She's only known as Zahira and isn't given a surname.
  • Stone Wall: Downplayed. Due to her "castle wall" gimmick she fancies herself as "wall that yields to no one" because of her defensive skills as a Queen's Blood player, but it doesn't actually translate to her cards or gameplay.

  • Only One Name: She's only known as Isabelle and isn't given a surname.

Voiced By: UnknownForeign VAs

    Dale

Voiced By: Damien Haas (English), Unknown (Japanese)

A Queen's Blood player in Nibelheim. He's a Sephiroth Clone who's more interested in playing Queen's Blood than joining the Reunion.

  • Ambiguous Situation: Is Dale really the one playing Queen's Blood, or is Sephiroth just messing with Cloud yet again, because there's nothing he won't stoop to if it means spiting Cloud?
  • It Can Think: Assuming Dale is the one playing, it's proof that Sephiroth Clones retain some measure of intelligence.
