Protagonists

    Benjamin

Benjamin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/benjamin_2.png

A simple-minded yet adventurous boy who ventures out to defeat the Dark King according to a prophecy after his village gets destroyed.

  • The Chosen One: He is told right at the beginning of the game that he is the hero chosen by a prophecy to save the crystals. Or so the mysterious old man guesses.
    • The Unchosen One: Though it turns out the prophecy was fake to begin with; the Dark King made it all up. Benjamin defeats him anyway.
  • Doomed Hometown: Benjamin's village is destroyed right in the beginning of the game, though we never learn much about his life before the game's events.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: He actually has no default name — it is only ever mentioned in the North American game manual.
  • Magic Knight: Benjamin is adequate with both physical attacks and magic.
  • Only Sane Man: Despite being rather simple-minded and easygoing, he is often bemused or bewildered by the antics of his other party members, and is quite normal compared to them.
  • Pinball Protagonist: Benjamin is sent around to various places on his journey by a mysterious old man, who tells him about the prophecy in the first place.
  • Protagonist Without a Past: Nothing is known about Benjamin's life before the events of the game, nor does he share any feelings about his hometown being destroyed. He just barely averts being a Featureless Protagonist by having a bit of a personality and unique dialogue.

    Kaeli

Kaeli

A girl from the town of Foresta who joins Benjamin's party to heal the forest's decay and help him pass through it. Her father is Captain Mac, whose ship Benjamin needs to cross the sea.

  • Combat Medic: In addition to her powerful axe attacks, Kaeli functions as a healer.
  • Glacier Waif: She looks like a typical Princess Classic... yet she wields axes in battle.
  • Green Thumb: Kaeli has an affinity for plants and can even talk to them.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Kaeli is the first of Benjamin's allies to join him, which ends when she is poisoned by the Minotaur. She does end up rejoining him later on, however, but she does not stick around.
  • Nature Hero: She has a strong connection to nature and the Level Forest, and is driven to restoring the crystal and cleanse its decay. The second time she joins Benjamin it is to help him communicate with the Giant Tree and defeat the monsters taking up residence inside of it.
  • Redhead In Green: Kaeli is a classic example, with vibrant red hair and a bright green dress to signify her connection to nature.

    Tristam

Tristam

A mercenary who repeatedly encounters Benjamin on his adventure. He first joins Benjamin in the Bone Dungeon, after he steals the Elixir Benjamin needs to heal Kaeli. Once he gets the treasure he needs - the Dragon Claw - he gives Benjamin the Elixir.

  • And the Adventure Continues: At the end of the game, when Benjamin is about to depart on his boat for more adventures, Tristam joins him at the last second.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Tristam is the second of Benjamin's allies to join him, and he sticks around for the shortest time overall.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Tristam resembles a classic ninja, but he wears all white with yellow highlights.
  • Only in It for the Money: He only cares about getting money, and tries to sell an Elixir to Benjamin for an exorbitant price, which Benjamin needs to heal Kaeli of her poison. Later on, he shows up to help Benjamin only to quickly disappear at the promise of some rare treasure from Phoebe's grandfather Spencer.

    Phoebe

Phoebe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/phoebe_22.png

A fellow adventurer that Benjamin meets on his journey who is trying to thaw the magical ice covering her town of Aquaria.

  • Action Girl: Phoebe set out on her own to save her town and is implied to be an experienced adventurer, wielding more weapon types and more magic than the other party members and frequently giving Benjamin tips.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Phoebe has shorter hair than the more feminine Kaeli.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She is the third to join Benjamin. Unlike the others, the second time she joins him, she is there to stay and helps him defeat the Final Boss.
  • Lady of War: She is implied to be one thanks to her greater experience in adventuring and her Bow of Grace weapon. She also initially comes with the Cat Claws weapon, which she later gives to Benjamin.
  • Mage Marksman: She is a skilled archer with her Bow of Grace along with powerful magic attacks and healing.

    Reuben

Reuben

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ffmq_reuben.png

A young man from Fireburg who is devoted to saving his town by restoring the Fire Crystal. When he mentions that his father knows where it is, he and Benjamin join forces to rescue Reuben's father from the mines.

  • Epic Flail: Reuben wields a morning star as his weapon.
  • Gonk: In the European artwork [1], he is quite ugly and brutish looking.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He is the fourth person to join Benjamin on his quest. He does rejoin a second time, but his injuries prevent him from helping in the final dungeon.
  • Hot-Blooded: He is associated with fire and tends to rush into situations, both of which lead to him getting injured. He keeps trying to help despite his injuries, and eventually collapses from them.

Other Characters

    White

White

An enigmatic old man that Benjamin meets right at the beginning of his journey, and several other times throughout. He is the one who informs Benjamin that he is the hero of prophecy, but when pressed admits to it being a vague guess.

  • All There in the Manual: Like Benjamin, his name is never given in the game, and is only revealed in certain manuals.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: At one point Benjamin runs into him and all he does is ask for 10 gold for coffee before flying away.
  • Flying on a Cloud: He gets around by riding around on a cloud, appearing in all sorts of places to offer Benjamin sometimes vague advice.
  • Herald: He is the one who first informs Benjamin of the prophecy and sets him on his journey.
  • Secret Identity: He turns out to be the human form of the Crystal of Light.

    Dark King

Dark King

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darkking_6.png

The secret master of the Vile Four who used them to drain the power of the elemental crystals around the world. His base is in Doom Castle within the Focus Tower, once a symbol of peace and prosperity for the land.

  • Big Bad: He is the main villain of the game who is behind the draining of the elemental crystals.
  • Final Boss, New Dimension: After ascending to the top of Doom Castle, Benjamin and Phoebe confront the Dark King in a sort of starry, outer space dimension with floating planets and platforms.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: In the second phase of his fight, he opens his mantle to reveal six arms, all of which wield different weapons.
  • No Name Given: He has no name, not even in manuals — he is only ever called "Dark King."
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: He wears a typical fur-trimmed cape with tassels, a golden crown, and wields a scepter.
  • Self-Defeating Prophecy: He is the source of the prophecy that says there is a hero that will save the crystals. In reality, the Dark King made it all up. It's unclear why, but it set into motion the series of events that leads to Benjamin defeating him.
  • Spiders Are Scary: He transforms into a giant spider monster as the penultimate phase of his boss fight, and can launch "Spider Kids" and Gold or Silver webs to attack his foes and inflict status effects.
  • Take Over the World: He has only a handful of lines, all of which serve to establish him as a generic villain who wants to conquer everything and everyone.
  • We Can Rule Together: He makes an offer to Benjamin and Phoebe to stand alongside him right before the battle, but Benjamin of course denies him.
