Alex

The Hero, whom much of the narration follows.

  • A Million Is a Statistic: He admits that he isn't entirely comfortable with Kaede's killings, but doesn't really mind it as long as she stays alive, stating that her life means more to her than a thousand others.
  • Abusive Parents: Prior to ending up at the orphanage, he lived with his maternal uncle, who beat him regularly, called him a freak, and locked him out of the house to fend for himself.
  • And Show It to You: In chapter 9, which details Kaede's capture after Aiko Takada's death, Alex, while going on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the soldiers, rips out one soldier's heart and squeezes it until it bursts, guts another and uses the second's intestines to strangle a third to death, and finally breaks off one of the second's ribs and impales him through the skull with it.
  • Anti-Hero: He has no qualms against killing, but nonetheless has a conscience and forms close bonds with Kaede and the residents of Maple House.
  • Berserk Button: Whatever you do, do not gang up on or disrespect girls or call someone a freak in front of him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's very protective of Kaede.
  • Bully Hunter: He first befriends Kaede when he helps her fight off Tomoo and his gang.
  • Cooldown Hug: Gives one to Mayu when she confides in him that she was sexually abused.
  • Inheritance Of Acquired Traits: He inherited his father's eye color and powers, as well as his mother's sarcasm.
  • Only One Name: He's only ever called Alex.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: He sympathizes with the Diclonii. See Zombie Advocate below for more.
  • That Man Is Dead/Meaningful Rename: At the end of chapter 12, Alex decides to take on the name of his late father, Zale, in order to move on from his past mistakes and failures.
  • Zombie Advocate: He is adamant that the Diclonii are not inherently evil and that all they need is some acceptance.

Zale

Alex's late father, the end result of Director Kakuzawa's Project Cherubim, a Super-Soldier experiment meant to create beings that would effectively counter the Diclonii and keep them in check.

  • Child Soldier: Chapter 4 of Dark Seraphim reveals that he began aiding the institute in restraining the Diclonii when he was only ten.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: He left Alex in the care of his brother-in-law to keep him safe from Kakuzawa's wrath.
  • Defector from Decadence: He eventually realized that Kakuzawa lied to him about the Diclonii and turned on him, with some of his friends at the facility aiding him in fighting back and freeing some of the trapped girls.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The workers at the institute made sure to keep him isolated from the Diclonii to prevent him from realizing what was really going on, with his only real contact with them being when they were trying to escape. He eventually did discover the deception, however.
  • Sole Survivor: He was the only test subject of Project Cherubim to survive the experiments.
