Main Characters

    Protagonists

Rowena Lyness

Voiced by: Erika Harlacher

Ivor's former Chancellor, and widowed mother to Edwin before her own death. After being framed for Treason, she is executed and her son is imprisoned. Her anger at the injustice and the fear for her son causes her to linger as a Revenant spirit. While capable of destructive magic and minor telekinesis in this state, she's unable to help her son until Lucien contacts her spirit with a Whisperuby and grants her the Exemplars. By commanding the spirits inside the weapons and sustaining them with her magic, she can conduct missions to find materials and information in the diseased world below Welkin. Only the magical and dying can see her, but she can use the Exemplars as her face and mouthpiece

  • Action Girl: Responsible for nearly all the combat in the game. Will take on everything from Zombies to Goddesses to help her son.
  • Mama Bear: Stays as a ghost for years before Lucien gives her the power to act, all for the sake of her son.

Lucien Foy

Voiced by: Joe Zieja

A recently elected steward to Welkin's council after nearly 5 years of residence. He's an excellent talker, historian, art lover, and potion brewer. He contacts the departed spirit of Rowena Lyness and grants her his knowledge of the Exemplars so she can help his plan to depose Ivor from ruling Welkin Castle. A prolific schemer, his plans often disregard who they hurt and can often go in unexpected ways.

  • Non-Action Guy: He's incapable of offense more than a Strongly Worded Letter. In a fake ending of chapter 1, Rowena can send Lucien to the surface where he is quickly dispatched by the whale boss.
  • Video Game Stealing: Can pickpocket gear sets from guards for Rowena to use, as well as some key items like letters from other NPCs.

NPCs

    Functionals

Griselia

Welkin's Librarian. Serves to functionally "unlock" new Exemplars or Deathblows from each weapon you discover. She's very friendly to Lucien as you can never lose favor with her. If you get her favor high enough in Chapter 5, Lucien can choose to put his quest on hold to marry her. Rowena is not amused by this.

Nikholas

Welkin's head alchemist, magic weapon collector, and ardent Pacifist. Functions as the mechanism by which Arceus are equipped to your Exemplars, albeit this function is redundant to the Department.

Rhiannon

Welkin's religious leader and priestess of the Drakina faith. Her training in ancient scripture reading allows her to translate scrolls that teach Rowena new spells.

Magnar

Welkin's Arenamaster and battle trainer. After Chapter 2 he allows you to train your Exemplars in randomly generated levels for stronger Arceus and Mastery experience.

    Counselors

Larkin

Welkin's chancellor after Rowena. An accomplished magic user and serious administrator of law and order.

Nigel

The senior council lord and Ivor's staunchest supporter. An amateur novelist, widower, and devout Drakina follower. Has a fondness for Alton.

Opal

Former wealthy socialite serving as council lord. Heavy drinker who alternates between hedonistic to heavily practical proposals.

Reginald

Former apocathary with a clouded past. Takes his duties on the council very seriously and advocates for the common citizens.

Willa

A zealot of the Drakina faith and social reformer. Campaigns to join the council after a vacancy appears. Has little tolerance for the status quo. Hates Nigel.

    Welkin Citizens

Eli

Welkin's chef and oldest resident. Must deal with supply shortage and demanding nobles. Cannot be killed by the plot despite appearing in danger occasionally. Often stands in for other NPCs if they die in the plot.

Evie

Welkin's warehouse manager and chief water treatment engineer. Former schoolteacher who was brought to ruin by a corrupt supplies merchant. Former member of the New May anti-Ivor rebels. Idolises her alchemist brother who gave up his ticket to Welkin.

Cirrus

An eccentric artist who loves to provoke Reginald. He only respects those that find the warped meanings of his works.

Otto

A voracious bookworm yet insufferable fan of the Lord of the Rhombus book series.

Madia Brewer

A wealthy old woman haunted by visions of spirits portending her doom. Secretly the author of the Lord of the Rhombus books, Barmaid Weer.

Edwin

Rowena's son, imprisoned since her execution. Cared for by Lucien.

Alton

Second highest warehouse worker and friend to Evie.

Myra

Another warehouse worker, amateur astronomer, twin sister to Syrene.

Syrene

Myra's sister she disappears after chapter 1. Becomes the reoccurring boss Vengeful Revenant.

    Ivor's Allies

Ivor

Enigmatic and reclusive warden of Welkin since before the Miasma. Powerful in magic but displays little regard for people.

Rayne

Captain of Welkin's guards. Once a journalist, became corrupted by bribes offered to her by rich Welkin offenders.

Cassius

Stoic guard that serves under Rayne.

Catherine Ashdown

Wealthy noblewoman who supplies Welkin with food delivery. Plots to rule the surface once the pandemic ends.

Silas Ashdown
