    Ninten

Ninten

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Clayten_484.png
Age: 12
Height: 5'0" / 152 cm
Weight: 92½lbs / 42 kg
Blood type: A
Hair color: Black
Defense Position: Right Field

A twelve-year-old American boy with a love of baseball. He lives with his mother Carol, his younger twin sisters Mimmie and Minnie, and their pet dog Mick on the northern outskirts of the town of Podunk, which is known as Mother's Day in Japan. He sets out to find the Eight Melodies and possibly uncover secrets about his mysterious great-grandparents. Not much information is given about his personality, but he seems to be a kind, brave kid, with a bit of a temper. He occasionally suffers from asthma.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job:
    • Saori Kumi's novel switches Ana and Ninten's hair colors. It turns out that there was a reason for that later on.
    • In the Japanese live-action commercial for MOTHER, he has brown hair.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Good grief is his novel counterpart a brat! Unlike Ninten, who gets little characterization due to essentially being a mask worn by the player, his counterpart "Ken" is an overall rude, abrasive, and haughty little boy to the point where both of his companions, Ana especially, cannot stand him. His one redeeming quality is that he genuinely loves his mother and sisters and wants to stop Giygas for their sake.
  • Adaptation Name Change: He's known as "Ken" in the novelization. It is sometimes argued that this is due to Ninten being intended as a placeholder for the player rather than an official name.
  • The All-American Boy: He's a bat-wielding Everyman boy from a small American town.
  • All There in the Manual: According to Encyclopedia MOTHER, his favorite food is Prime Rib, loves penguins, and is a big fan of the San Francisco Giants.
  • Asthma Peril: He suffers from asthma, and it becomes a health-draining status effect if he's hit by truck smog. An inhaler is a purchasable item to help remedy this.
  • Badass Adorable: Much like his fellow MOTHER-series playable characters, his adorableness hides the fact that he's skilled with bats and can beat you to death with them.
  • Barrier Warrior: He gets PSI Shield α and β, as well as Power Shield. α and β halve all damage, the former targets one ally and the latter targets all allies. Power Shield blocks and reflects all damage back to the attacker.
  • Batter Up!: Uses baseball bats as weapons.
  • Battle Boomerang: Although his main weapon type of choice is baseball bats, a savvy player will have him equipped with a boomerang instead for a large portion of the game. This is because the boomerang is the second-strongest weapon Ninten can equip; the strongest being Hank's Bat, which isn't obtained until the Mt. Itoi caves. The boomerang, however, can be bought fairly early in the game (Merrysville; and one can be obtained even earlier than that in a gift box in Queen Mary's Castle) and can be equipped by every party member, so you'll actually be spending most of the game having everyone use boomerangs instead of their personal specialty weapon types.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When his sisters get attacked by the lamp and doll during first few moments in game, he will endeavor to destroy whatever harms them to save them.
  • Combat Medic: He has a powerful physical attack stat, the strongest of all permanent members, but all of his PSI are assist and healing. He doesn't even get a Signature Move that deals massive damage like Ness's PSI Rockin or Lucas's PK Love. note
  • Dance of Romance: Shares one with Ana in the Healer's House on Mt. Itoi.
  • Demoted to Extra: A surprising example in the novelization, where Ninten's counterpart, Ken, is no longer the main protagonist. While he still plays an important role in the story, the role of hero goes to Ana instead.
  • Dimensional Traveler: 4th-D Slip (じげんスリップ, or "Dimension Slip" in Japanese) is most likely this, unless you take the "fourth dimension" to be time.
  • Escape Battle Technique: His signature PSI move, the aforementioned 4th-D Slip.
  • invokedFountain of Expies: His appearance (especially his trademark striped shirt) set the standard for MOTHER series protagonists.
    • Ness is the most obvious example, as he is almost an exact copy of him except with a yellow backpack, larger shirt stripes, and different color shoes and socks. As Ness is more well-known, this sometimes leads to confusion.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's asthmatic, and polluted air triggers it. This serves as a status ailment when fighting sentient trucks, which incapacitates him unless you have an asthma inhaler on you. He's still willing to fight aliens and save the world.
  • Hero Protagonist: He's the series' very first, being the main protagonist of 'EarthBound Beginnings who ends up finding himself on a journey to find the Eight Melodies while combating an alien invasion in the process.
  • Heroic Mime: The notable exception being the original Family Computer manual, which was written in first person (hence the constant use of "boku" and more information describing himself than his friends such as his age).
    • Also, in EarthBound Beginnings and MOTHER 1+2, he has a few brief lines of dialogue during the ending.
  • Hot-Blooded: At least in the novel.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: A Japanese example. Ninten's name is written in either hiragana or katakana depending on the source (the screenshots in the instruction booklet and his sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl both use hiragana, but Encyclopedia MOTHER instead uses katakana). Overall, the hiragana spelling seems to be the most common.
  • Jack of All Stats: Unlike Ness and Lucas in the sequels, Ninten isn't held back by a horrible Speed stat, and actually only gives the illusion of being a tank due to spending most of the game next to Lloyd and Ana, who both lean more towards the lightweight, fragile side. Ninten himself is as balanced as the game's engine allows for; aside from HP and PP, his base stats are all 5 across the board, with identical level-up growth rates to match. On the flipside, his PSI movelist is less well-rounded than Ness' or Lucas', being comprised exclusively of healing and supportive PSI, with no damaging techniques in sight. Unless Power Shield is counted as it reflects any damage that Ninten would normally have taken.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The novelization written by Saori Kumi portrays him as this.
  • Magic Knight: Has access to a wide selection of healing and assist PSI, as well as good physical attack and defense stats.
  • Momma's Boy: In the novel, "Ken" is this. He tries to play it cool with a tough guy act, but he, according to Lloyd, often will wake up screaming for his mother (or sisters as well).
  • No Name Given: He was this originally. The name "Ninten" comes from what the manual named him in screenshots, which is based on Nintendo's own name and reused in strategy guides. Since the intention was for the main character's name to be up to the player's preference, the novelization gave him the name "Ken." MOTHER 1+2 also leaves his name out while providing defaults for the other three characters, suggesting that Ninten's name was originally a placeholder. Thus, Japanese fans either refer to him as Ninten or Ken, while he's largely known as Ninten practically everywhere else. His sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl finally settled this and put "Ninten" as his Canon Name.
  • Primary-Color Champion: His outfit is entirely red, yellow, and blue.
  • Psychic Powers: Unlike Ana's, Ninten's PSI is mostly supportive, with moves like LifeUp, Healing, Telepathy, OffenseUp, DefenseUp, and PSI Shield.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Ninten states in the combat section of the original game's manual that he hates violence.
Ninten: When you leave for an adventurous journey, you’re going to have to fight. I hate violence, but this is to protect my mom and sisters, so I guess I gotta.
  • Scarf Of Ass Kicking: The live-action commercial for MOTHER has Ninten wearing a red neckerchief. Although no official artwork contains the neckerchief, most fan artists tend to draw Ninten with this, sometimes with said commercial's different shirt pattern, in order to help distinguish him from Ness.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Lloyd's Sensitive Guy. He becomes the Sensitive Guy in comparison when Teddy takes the latter's place.
  • Signature Move: While he doesn't have a strong PSI ability that deals massive damage like his successors in EarthBound and Mother 3, a lot of Ninten's healing and supportive buffs are unique to him. Specifically, the PSI technique 4th-D Slip, which no one else in the entire series can use, is usually taken to be Ninten's equivalent to Ness's PSI Rockin and Lucas's PK Love. It allows the user a 100% chance of escaping from battles (meaning no experience points) at the cost of 16 PP - not quite the same as dealing damage to the enemy, but still very useful in a game with a high encounter rate like EarthBound Beginnings.
  • Status Buff: Exclusive to him in the game is Offense Up, Defense Up, and Quick Up, which temporarily boosts him and his allies' offense, defense, and speed respectively.
  • Support Party Member: Although his physical attack power is the second-strongest of the four main characters by a significant margin, his PSI pool consists exclusively of support and recovery techniques.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Prime ribs, according to Encyclopedia MOTHER. This (along with Ninten's own name) is still left blank by default in MOTHER 1+2, and if one video of an ''Earth Bound'' cartridge is to be believed, "Pizza" was going to be the localization. According to the EarthBound Beginnings eShop trailer, the official localization is "Steak" to match the sequel.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Will end up getting one of these from a cop if he accepts a drink from a woman at the Live House. The cop will chastise Ninten for drinking under age, and arrest him and his friends. The cop also confiscates his weapon and you need to buy it back.
  • White Mage: Only has support and healing PSI.

    Lloyd

Lloyd

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lloyd_mother.png
Age: 11
Height: 4'10½" / 149 cm
Weight: 80lbs / 40 kg
Blood type: AB
Hair color: Gray
Time spent sleeping: 3 hours

An eleven-year-old boy genius from Merrysville, called Thanksgiving in Japan. Lloyd is brilliant, but is often bullied by his classmates for being a nerd and a weakling. From all the bullying, he developed a tendency to hide in trash cans to avoid confrontation. Despite this, he has a great deal of determination. Bullying had left him very shy and cowardly at the time of when he joins Ninten, but over the course of the game, he grows stronger and becomes more confident in himself.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the commercial for MOTHER, his hair is reddish-brown. Granted, this is probably just a case of reality crashing against his visual design, since there aren't a lot of silver-haired children out there, and they probably didn't think it worth it to give the kid playing him a dye job for a half-minute advertisement.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was bullied by the other kids in his hometown simply for being a nerd. Their bullying was to the point where he hid himself in a trashcan.
  • All There in the Manual: According to the Encyclopedia MOTHER, he is one year younger than Ninten, has a dread of gym class, and likes rockets, science, computers, and Superman.
  • Badass Bookworm: After his Big Damn Heroes moment.
  • Battle Boomerang: Although guns are his personal weapon type, for most of the game, a savvy player will actually have him equipped with a boomerang instead. This is because the boomerang is Lloyd's second-strongest weapon in the entire game, his strongest being the Air Gun, which can by purchased from the store in Youngtown.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In one scenario, he saves Ninten, Ana, and Teddy from being slaughtered by R•7038, but is too late to save the critically-wounded Teddy. He still manages to destroy R•7038, however.
  • Boisterous Weakling: In the novel, Lloyd is described to be "all big talk" but reduced to squeals and flailing his arms when enemies show up.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets bullied a lot at school, and his classmates and even the descriptions of his personal weaponry make fun of him and call him a weakling. When Teddy is recruited, the first thing he does is kick Lloyd out of the party. He finally gets his moment to shine via a Big Damn Heroes where he uses a tank to save Ninten, Ana, and Teddy from getting pulverized by R•7038.
  • Child Prodigy: According to MOTHER Encyclopedia, he made his first invention, the "Bathroom TV", when he was just four years old. He built a time machine for a science fair when he was eight (though no one knew it was him because he was hiding from bullies in a trash can). He also demonstrated an astounding memory, which allowed him to win first place at the Pan-American Concentration Convention, a contest that tested a person's intelligence.
  • Demolitions Expert: He is the only party member able to use explosive attack items such as bottle rockets and bombs. Notably, in the sequels, anyone is able to use bombs but in this game they are exclusive to Lloyd.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Was able to fix up the boat on Mt. Itoi. Also, see Child Prodigy above.
  • Geek Physiques: Referred to as a weakling by his peers, and even his own father! Also invoked by his overall low stats. Adding to this, the encyclopedia states that he hates gym class.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: MOTHER merchandise lists his name as "Roid," but his sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl calls him "Lloyd". Tomato's retranslation of MOTHER also gives Lloyd as his default name. While unofficial, some parts of the fandom also interpret his name as "Loid." The eShop trailer for EarthBound Beginnings also confirmed it to be Lloyd.
  • Item Caddy: Lloyd's party role. While he can't use PSI abilities like Ninten or Ana, and he can't quite reach the devastating physical damage output that Ninten and especially Teddy provide, there are a slew of powerful attacking items in the game that only Lloyd can use. His status as this is exemplified by the fact he has the highest Wisdom stat in the party, which increases the chance of items working successfully.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Like Lloyd, his father can also be found hiding in a garbage can. The MOTHER Encyclopedia states that both Lloyd and his father have the same exact likes and dislikes, including food.
  • Lovable Coward: Ninten meets Lloyd hiding from bullies in a garbage can. He later gets over his cowardice through Character Development.
  • Meaningful Name: Lloyd's name comes from the Japanese word "roidomegane", meaning "round, thick-rimmed glasses". This is believed to be named after Harold Lloyd. Additionally, Lloyd is a Welsh name meaning "grey", which matches the color of his hair on the clay model.
  • Momma's Boy: Implied. The MOTHER Encyclopedia stated that as a baby, he would let only his mother coddle him. Lloyd's described as one in the novel as well.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: To the point where the MOTHER Encyclopedia states that nobody has ever seen his eyes, not even his own mother.
  • The Paralyzer: The first "gun" weapon available to him is a stun gun. Actually, it's one of only two. The other is the Air Gun, which is actually a gun, whereas a stun gun is in fact not a gun, nor can Lloyd's stun enemies.
  • Physical, Mystical, Technological: Ninten's three nameable companions are differentiated from each other along these lines. Lloyd himself is Technological, to go with Teddy's Physical and Ana's Mystical.
  • Red Is Heroic: He wears a red T-shirt. He's also a main party member.
  • Required Party Member: Barring glitches and exploitsnote , he is the only main party member who needs to be recruited to complete the game; a few key points, such as using the rocket in Duncan Factory to blow up the rocks blocking the train tracks, using the tank in Advent Desert, and activating the speedboat on Mt. Itoi to access EVE, cannot be completed without him.
    • Guest-Star Party Member: While the glitch allowing him to be skipped outright is no longer present from EarthBound Beginnings onward, it's possible to keep Teddy throughout the endgame instead of Lloyd in any version of the game as long as the player has already acquired the seventh melody from EVE prior to recruiting Teddy and then avoid going to the healer's house on Mt. Itoi. It's also possible, by Teleporting or using the Onyx Hook at a very precise moment, to simply ditch Lloyd after completing Teddy's arc and ascend Mt. Itoi without him.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Ninten's Manly Man.
  • The Smart Guy: In Ninten's party. Besides being a Gadgeteer Genius, he is stated to be very intelligent.
  • Stereotypical Nerd: Lloyd is an extremely pasty 11-year-old with thick, round glasses and a strong interest in computer software. He's a frequent bullying target at his elementary school, and is first introduced hiding from the bullies in a trash can on the school's roof. The MOTHER Encyclopedia states he has a dread for gym class, loves all things related to science (and rockets), and his idol is Albert Einstein. He also has the weakest stats of the main party, though that can be solved through level-grinding. By the end of the game he's taken a level in badass and pilots a tank.
  • Tank Goodness: In his Big Damn Heroes moment, he uses a rented tank to save his friends from R•7038, though he's unable to save the critically injured Teddy.
  • Youthful Freckles: Has a pair of three red dots, one on each cheek.

    Ana

Ana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ana_mother.png
Age: 12
Height: 4'8" / 143 cm
Weight: 79 lbs / 36 kg
Blood type: B
Hair color: Blonde
Zodiac sign: Capricorn

Sweet yet timid twelve-year-old Ana hails from the wintry town of Snowman, living in a church (called a "chateau" in the English version but is clearly meant to be a church) run by her pastor father. She wishes to look for her missing mother who had taken a trip to Youngtown (called Easter in the Japanese version) but never returned, however is afraid to because she had never ventured out of Snowman alone. She began to have trouble sleeping due to having odd dreams about a boy named Ninten, whom she joins forces with to find her mother when he and Lloyd did indeed show up at her home.
  • Action Girl: With her Frying Pan of Doom, as well as her Psychic Powers.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: She's a brunette in the novelization.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Saori Kumi's novelization depicts Ana as the main protagonist instead of Ninten, or "Ken" as he is known. Much of the book is told from her perspective, and she gets the largest amount of focus throughout the story. In fact, the book starts with her meeting Ken and Lloyd in Snowman.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: In the Encyclopedia MOTHER, she is stated to dislike using her powers.
  • All There in the Manual: According to Encyclopedia MOTHER, she is the same age as Ninten, never ventured out of her hometown alone, is deeply religious (one of her favorite possessions being a Bible), is a skilled piano player, collects stamps and envelopes, has a penpal from Japan named Yoshie, is a lover of all animals (she once released all the frogs set to be dissected at her school with her mind), and she's the only character in the entire series with a canon birthdate, December 23rd (it says she was born the night before Christmas Eve).
  • Badass Adorable: This adorable little girl in pink and pigtails has some powerful PSI.
  • Barrier Warrior: Like Ninten, she gets all of the shielding PSI, but learns them faster than he does.
  • Battle Boomerang: Although frying pans are her personal weapon type, for most of the game, a savvy player will actually have her equipped with a boomerang instead. This is because the boomerang is Ana's second-strongest weapon in the entire game, her strongest being the Iron Skillet, which isn't obtained until the Mt. Itoi caves.
  • Dance of Romance: Shares one with Ninten in the Healer's House on Mt. Itoi.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Prior to the start of the game, Ana had been having dreams about Ninten, whom she joins forces with later.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Uses frying pans as weapons.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Only with her hat off. When it's on, she has a single ponytail.
  • Glass Cannon: She'll be dishing out One-Hit Kill moves like it's nothing once she gets some levels on her...as long as she doesn't get one-hit killed herself due to her abysmal HP and defensive stats.
  • Good Parents: Her parents seemed to have raised her very well, as she turned out to have a sweet personality.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Definitely not intentional, but it's possible, by using Teleport or the Onyx Hook at just the right moment, to ditch her before starting the dance scene and ascend Mt. Itoi with only Ninten.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A kind and gentle-hearted blonde girl who just so happens to be a Kid Heroine.
  • The Heart: Of Ninten's party. She's feminine, very religious (in a good way), has a strong moral compass, pacifistic, and a very Nice Girl - all traits that a Heart would have.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: A less prominent example in comparison to other characters who got hit with this trope in this series, but Ana is actually written as "Anna" in MOTHER merchandise. However, her sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl spells it with one 'n', as does the most direct translation of her katakana.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her clay model shows that she has blue eyes. She's also a Kid Hero.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's 12-years-old. And armed with very strong PSI powers.
  • Missing Mom: One of the big reasons she offers to join Ninten is to find her mother. And she does.
  • Official Couple: With Ninten, as suggested by an optional scene in which they dance together and confess their love.
  • Optional Party Member: While it's possible to complete the entire game without ever even visiting her hometown of Snowman, recruiting her into the party is absolutely worthwhile. Players looking for 100% will also permanently miss Magicant upgrades for her and Lloyd.
  • Physical, Mystical, Technological: Ninten's three nameable companions are differentiated from each other along these lines. Ana is Mystical, to go with Teddy's Physical and Lloyd's Technological.
  • Preacher's Kid: She's the daughter of a local priest in Snowman Village. Her father's compassion while raising her influenced Ana to be just as kind.
  • Psychic Powers: Her PSI, which is even better than Ninten's. She is also able to see things yet to come in her dreams, much like Paula from the sequel.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: She's the strongest PSI user in the game who can decimate enemies with various elemental attacks and strives to save the world from Giygas' influence. She's also a devout Christian, with her favorite item being her Bible, her father being a priest, and living in a church on the far end of Snowman.
  • Red Mage: Her support and healing PSI is even better than Ninten's, and she's the only party member who can use offensive PSI.
  • Scratch Damage: A little infamous for this. Being the main mage of the party, her physical offense stat is so low, that her regular attack all-too-often results in this, even if she has the Iron Skillet equipped. You are much better off having her attack using PSI.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female character in the party.
  • Squishy Wizard: Boy, is she ever.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Lives in a church. Even more apparent in Encyclopedia MOTHER. One of her favorite possessions is her copy of the Bible.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Pippi's Tomboy.
  • White Magician Girl: Partially subverted. She has the typical personality of this trope, but is actually a Red Mage.

    Teddy

Teddy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teddy_mother.png
Age: Unknown
Height: 6'2" / 188 cm
Weight: 172 lbs / 78 kg
Blood type: Unclear
Hair color: Black
Special technique: Right Hook

Unlike the other members of the party, Teddy is not a kid; rather, he appears to be around his late teens to early twenties. Leader of the Bla-Bla Gang (Black Blood Gang in Japan), he is the kingpin of Ellay (Valentine in Japan) until some kids come in and start messing with his crew. After he is beaten by Ninten, he joins the party to avenge the death of his parents.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: According to Encyclopedia MOTHER, he started acting like an adult when he was three, buying chocolate cigarettes and listening to rockabilly music, much to the amusement of the repairmen who worked at his father's car repair factory.
  • All There in the Manual: According to Encyclopedia MOTHER, he likes smoking "Horse Shit" brand cigarettes, fighting, rock and roll, and (implied) drinking, and his "Bla-Bla" Gang is short for "Black-Blood" Gang. It is also stated that his parents were killed in a car accident, but he blamed the strange creatures of Mt. Itoi. He also has a pet iguana.
  • Badass Normal: He doesn't have PSI like Ninten and Ana, and isn't able to use explosives and special gadgets like Lloyd. To make up for it, he is a Lightning Bruiser with the highest attack and speed stats in-game. For a normal human, he can take out animals, robots, and other weird creatures fairly easily.
  • The Big Guy: He's in his late teens / early twenties, so it's only natural he looks like this in comparison to the cast of kids you play as. Encyclopedia MOTHER says he's 188 cm (or about 6'2") tall. Also has the single highest Strength and Speed stat growth of all the characters in the game, and can easily one shot a lot of enemies in Mt. Itoi should you spend some time leveling him up.
  • Cool Shades: He wears a pair of black sunglasses, which is listed by the MOTHER Encyclopedia as one of his "favorite things". However, his clay model and in-game boss sprite wears red shades, and due to graphical limitations, many fans interpreted his glasses as red Triangular Shades. The MOTHER Encyclopedia also states that he got his sunglasses from the owner of an eyeglasses store that only started selling sunglasses after Teddy punched the guy's front teeth out.
  • Crutch Character: Subverted. His damage output, lack of PSI, and inability to use Lloyd's special weapons makes you think he only exists to help grind Ninten and Ana up to withstand the dangers of Mt. Itoi, at which point he starts to fall behind in comparison to their abilities... but his raw damage output quickly grows to eclipse anything the party can do outside of Instant Death Attacks. The only thing that keeps him from becoming too powerful is the fact that he's taken out of commission shortly after making it through the Mt. Itoi caves. Still really useful for leveling Ana and Ninten up during the short time you have him though, as well as fighting the dragon in Magicant with.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Gains respect for Ninten and the others once they manage to hold their own in a battle against him and he calls off their fight.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Towards his pet lizard, anyway. His pet lizard was a gift from the leader of a rival gang he defeated in a gang conflict; despite not being fond of the lizard at first, he grew to like it and ended up raising it.
  • Delinquents: Seems to be based more on the Japanese variety than the American ones seen in Mother though, with shades of Greaser Delinquents thrown in.
  • Delinquent Hair: His clay model depicts him with a pompadour, but his in-game sprites, possibly due to graphical limitations, show him with a mohawk. Most fans draw interpretations of him sporting a Japanese-style "Regent" pompadour or something similar.
  • Fictional Fan, Real Celebrity: One of his "Favorite Things" is a book on Eikichi Yazawa (named "E. Yazawa" here), a Japanese rock musician and celebrity. According to the MOTHER Encyclopedia, he received the book from Koyano, a second-generation Japanese member of the Bla-Bla gang; though he can't read Japanese (being an American in Ellay), he came to admire the man. This may have influenced his decision to become a singer at the Live House at the end of the game.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: If you play through the game the intended way, at least. He will join your party just before the final dungeon of the game, only to be critically injured and have to leave once you reach the midpoint of the dungeon.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: One of his "Favorite Things" is his black Schott-Perfecto leather jacket, which he keeps as a memento to his dead father.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Teddy's two strongest weapons are the Sword (found in Magicant) and the Katana (found in Mt. Itoi, one of the hardest parts of the game).
  • Heroic BSoD: What his reaction was upon learning his parents died on Mt. Itoi. To specify, he went to the Live House, got himself drunk, and started a bar fight in an attempt to distract his grief.
  • Hidden Depths: The MOTHER Encyclopedia implies that, despite being a gang leader, he actually hates the Bla-Bla Gang, and wears his father's leather jacket instead of the ones provided by his gang so he won't have to spend time with them.
  • Ironic Name: Not him, but the city Teddy lives in is named "Valentine Town" in the original Japanese port for MOTHER. There's nothing ironic about a city named after the holiday of love being a terrible, gang-ridden place.
  • Irony: When you recruit Teddy, the first thing he does is kick Lloyd out of the party on the basis that Lloyd is a weak person not suitable for fighting. Guess who saves Teddy's ass when he, Ninten, and Ana are critically wounded in Mt. Itoi?
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: He bought his parents a Siamese cat after working a graveyard shift at the Live House for a year since the tender age of 12. Presumably he wanted to do something nice for his parents for a change considering all the trouble he got into. Ironically, he himself kept a lizard as a pet.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Has both the highest attack and speed stats in the game.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to graphical limitations, he appears like Ninten but is actually in his young adult years.
  • Optional Party Member: Yet another character that can be passed up, only he requires two additional slots (namely Lloyd and Ana) before he can even be met. While he can be a worthy asset, his character arc (which can also be skipped) is likely meant to hint that Giygas cannot be subdued by raw strength.
  • Parental Abandonment: According to MOTHER Encyclopedia, Teddy's parents died when they decided to drive a newly-repaired truck through Mt. Itoi, causing Teddy much grief. The news reported it as an accident, but Teddy believed it was caused by monsters living in Mt. Itoi and wanted to avenge his parents. Since Mt. Itoi is known to be Harder Than Hard, he may be right.
  • Physical, Mystical, Technological: Ninten's three nameable companions are differentiated from each other along these lines. Teddy is Physical, to go with Ana's Mystical and Lloyd's Technological.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: In the Japanese Famicom version of MOTHER, Teddy's sprite was depicted holding a knife, which established him as a violent gang leader (the knife was removed in both the English version and the MOTHER 1+2 port). After you recruit him, he is the only person who can use the Butter Knife and the Survival Knife, although there isn't much reason to equip him with either, considering the far-superior Sword can be acquired long before he joins the party, and the Katana not long after.
  • Red Is Violent: Wears a red shirt, red shoes, red shades, and is the leader of a gang.
  • Rousing Speech: Becomes a motivational speaker in the versions of the game where his recovery is made explicit.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Ninten's Sensitive Guy once Lloyd leaves the party.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: His red shirt doesn't have any sleeves at all.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Is stated to be a frequent smoker since he was ten. Doesn't make him any less appealing to the fans.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Sort of. While he wasn't explicitly stated to have died in the Japanese Famicom original, later releases of the game added extra details to clarify his survival in the ending.
  • Teens Are Monsters: While he did bad things prior to that, it was when he turned fourteen that he became the leader of Ellay/Valentine's Bla-Bla Gang. How old he was by the time he met Ninten, Lloyd, and Ana is not known, but the Bla-Bla Gang became feared under his leadership. He eventually wises up after Mt. Itoi and leaves the gang for good, becoming a Live House singer.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: According to an Ellay NPC, he was a nice boy before his parents' deaths; while he developed Troubling Unchildlike Behavior, he didn't fall off the wayside until that point, after which he became a gang leader terrorizing Ellay, hellbent on avenging his parents' deaths. He was also willing to confront and fight Ninten, Ana, and Lloyd on-stage in the Live House in front of (presumably) a crowd of people.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Unlike the original Famicom version, Earthbound Beginnings and MOTHER 1+2 reveals he survives his injuries, leaves the Bla-Bla Gang, and becomes a singer performing at the Live House. This implies he realized that revenge wasn't worth it and let it go, making his life much happier in the long run.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: His clay model shows him with a massive upper torso with muscular arms and shoulders, compared to his legs which are skinny. Looks like someone skipped leg day.
  • Triangle Shades: He was doing Kamina's shades over a decade before Kamina (or Squirtle). Though this trope may be due to graphical limitations (you can't really see black sunglasses against a black background).
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: According to the MOTHER Encyclopedia, he developed an enjoyment for fighting when he was five.
  • Uncertain Doom: Due to a failure to follow up on the injuries he sustained on Mt. Itoi, his final fate was left ambiguous in the original Famicom release. EarthBound Beginnings and MOTHER 1+2 clarify that he made a full recovery.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: According to an NPC in Ellay, he was a very nice boy before his parents' deaths. The MOTHER Encyclopedia revealed that he was an Adorably Precocious Child in his youth, buying chocolate cigarettes and dancing to rock n' roll. While he did end up developing Troubling Unchildlike Behavior, he was never as bad until his parents died from what seemed to be a truck accident, turning him into a vengeful gang leader who was willing to fight a group of kids on-stage and wanted to avenge his parents' deaths.
  • Vague Age: It's been theorized by fans that Teddy is either in his late teens or twenties, at the least, and the unofficial novelization pegged him as an adult in his forties. While the prompt EarthBound Beginnings displays when entering Teddy's name is "This last boy's name?", implying he's rather young, the Japanese version simply asks "もうひとりのともだちは?*", which provides no such clues as to Teddy's age.
  • You Killed My Father: He claims his parents were killed by someone or something on Mount Itoi, and he joins Ninten in order to avenge them.

Allies

    Pippi

Pippi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/150px-Pippi_7850.png
A pigtailed young girl who goes missing after she disappears in the local cemetery. Ninten must find and save her before the zombies there get to her.
  • Badass Adorable: She's an adorable 7-year-old child. You wouldn't think she'd have the same stat growths as Teddy.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Unused data suggests you would have had to fight a brainwashed or zombified Pippi before she joined you.
  • Crutch Character: She's miles more powerful than Ninten and you'll feel it when she's removed from your party, though she does turn an unintended encounter group location into a Peninsula of Power Leveling.
  • Cute Bruiser: If you're not familiar with Pippi Longstocking, then you wouldn't expect her to have the exact same stat growths as Teddy.
  • Disappeared Dad: Only Pippi's mother is seen, which raises two possibilities; either her father walked out, or he's the reason why Pippi decided to go to the graveyard...
  • Fiery Redhead: Her uncanny strength aside, she's quick to call you out on acting tough if you tell her you're not afraid of the graveyeard.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in gravity-defying braids instead.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She only joins Ninten briefly, from when you rescue her in the graveyard until you bring her back to her mother. She's also the only guest who amounts to a fully functional character able to equip weapons and armor despite her relatively short stint in the party, for whatever reason.
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: Of Pippi Longstocking. Her mother's name (according to Encyclopedia MOTHER), Lindgren, is also the same last name as the author of the Pippi Longstocking books, Astrid Lindgren.
  • Lightning Bruiser: As mentioned above, she has the same stats as Teddy.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's seven years old, but that doesn't stop her from defeating enemies that are twice as big.
  • Missing Child: Pippi's side quest is full of this. She runs away to a cemetery that's full of zombies, leaving her mother in hysterics. Ninten has to go find her, alone. Unused data suggested that Ninten's delay in finding Pippi would have led to her becoming zombified or falling under some similar ailment, making it necessary to Beat the Curse Out of Her.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: A seven year old girl with the same growth stats as Teddy. Too bad she doesn't stay with you for long.
  • Precocious Crush: She's apparently seven years old (according to Encyclopedia MOTHER), and with the way she talks to the twelve year old Ninten, it's clear she has a thing for him.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: Her quote in Encyclopedia MOTHER rhymes, and note that it was after it was translated to English that it rhymed, by a direct translation.
"I'm Pippi. Who're you? What is it you're up to? I'm off on an adventure every day. Don't think of me as boyish, OK?"
  • A Taste of Power: When she temporarily joins your party, she quickly grows to eclipse Ninten in damage output, and he likely won't catch up to it until mid game. Still good for grinding, though.
  • Tomboy: Nothing is more tomboyish than being able to take on zombies and other dangerous creatures, despite being a little girl.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Ana's Girly Girl.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Like Teddy, she has no special mechanics or abilities to her name, and unlike him, modding or cheating to keep her reveals she can't use the weapons unique to him, restricting her to the universal Slingshot and Boomerang. Nonetheless, the both of them are so strong you'd still be better with her and Teddy in your party over Lloyd.
  • Youthful Freckles: Three dots, one on each cheek.

    Flying Men

Flying Men

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flying_man_eb.png
The Flying Men are friendly, humanoid birds that reside in Magicant. Ninten has the option of recruiting them in his party, but there is a price...

    Ninten's Family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nintenfamily.png
From left to right: Carol, Minnie and Mimmie
Ninten's (semi-)nuclear family consists of his mother Carol, younger twin sisters Minnie and Mimmie, and an oddly bipedal pet dog named Mick. Much like Ness's family, Minnie can store items, his at-home mother supports him by cooking his favorite meal, and his perpetually-away father is only spoken to over the telephone.
  • A Boy and His X: Encyclopedia MOTHER describes Mick as being Ninten's very first friend. When Ninten was a toddler, Mick would let the boy ride on his back.
  • All There in the Manual:
    • The name of Ninten's mother is Carol, somewhat in keeping with the holiday naming scheme seen throughout the game. This information is present in the manual, but oddly not Encyclopedia MOTHER.
    • Ninten's dog is named Mick, but this is something that is only mentioned in Encyclopedia MOTHER.
  • Dub Name Change: Ninten's Dad is called "Ninten's Papa" in MOTHER.
  • The Faceless: Ninten's Dad. Though, we do get to see him from behind in the ending of EarthBound Beginnings and MOTHER 1+2.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Both Minnie and Mimmie wear pigtails like Ana.
  • He Knows About Timed Hits: To get the key to the basement, you need to check Mick since it's around his collar. If you talk to him before taking the key, he will give you a hint towards that by telling you to CHECK him out.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Minnie and Mimmie are identical twin sisters; Minnie wears red and has red hair, and Mimmie wears purple and has purple hair.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Minnie and Mimmie have alternate romanizations ("Minny" and "Mimmy") in Encyclopedia MOTHER.
  • Old Dog: According to Encyclopedia MOTHER, Mick was one year, five months old when Ninten was born, making him about thirteen years old during the events of the game.
  • Trauma Inn: Carol's function. If you go home and talk to her, she'll cook your favorite food (whatever you name it) and let you rest, completely restoring your health and PSI points.
  • Unnamed Parent: Ninten's Dad.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Just what was that "something" that Ninten's Dad was fretting over at the end of the EarthBound Beginnings and MOTHER 1+2 versions?

    EVE

EVE

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eve.gif
A powerful robot that Ninten finds in an underwater laboratory in Mt. Itoi. Due to being a highly advanced piece of technology, she quickly proves herself to be one of the most powerful members of Ninten's party.
  • Crutch Character: While EVE is with you, she can destroy any enemy you encounter immediately, dealing around 1,000 damage per hit in a game where no regular enemy has more than three-digit HP. She isn't with you for long.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Not something she herself has done; rather, she is the light that George flung into the future for Ninten.
  • Gentle Giant: She's a Humongous Mecha, yet she's very protective of the children she travels with.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She joins Ninten and company for a time as they scale Mt. Itoi.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Self-destructs to take out the R7038XX.
  • Humongous Mecha: And every bit as disproportionately powerful as you would expect, next to a trio of children.
  • Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha!: EVE is an enormous robot, and far and away the most powerful party member in the game.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She almost always gets the first action in normal encounters, and she will invariably use it to eliminate an enemy from combat with her ridiculously powerful physical attacks.
  • Mama Bear: She was built by George as some sort of protective motherly figure for Ninten, knowing that aliens would come looking to hurt him. When Ninten's party encounter R7038XX, EVE decides to protect them by blowing herself up to take R7038XX down.
  • Plotline Death: Her aforementioned Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Taking You with Me: She dies protecting the party from R7038XX... but the ensuing explosion destroys EVE, as well.
  • Walking Spoiler: She's a robot George built as a guardian to protect his future great-grandson, Ninten. She also sacrifices herself to save Ninten and his friends from the powerful R7038XX. Bringing up EVE would result in being whited out.

Spoiler Characters

    Queen Mary

Queen Mary / Maria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/queenmary.gif
The ethereal, beautiful queen of the mysterious land of Magicant. She has trouble recalling something important to her, and the only thing that will help her remember are the Eight Melodies. In reality, she is Ninten's great-grandmother, Maria, who was the deeply-beloved foster mother of Giygas and thus the titular character. She passed away sometime after George escaped with the secrets of PSI.
  • Good Parents: To Giygas in her backstory, whom she treated as her own son despite him being an alien. Even after she's gone, Giygas thinks rather fondly of her, and Ninten's direct relation to her may be why he wanted the boy to board his mothership.
  • The High Queen: Of Magicant, where she is the ruler of all who live there.
  • Identity Amnesia: She somehow got trapped inside her own mind, unable to pass on and losing her memories of what she used to be, causing her endless grief. It's not until her great-grandson Ninten comes along and helps her that she finally starts to remember her old life, and with that she dies, taking Magicant with her.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: She is Ninten's great-grandmother, who disappeared a long time ago and has been trapped in her own mental world ever since.
  • Meaningful Name: In Japanese, her name is spelled "マリー" (Marii), which later in the game changes to "マリア" (Maria). It references how she had a hard time remembering her former identity, her alien foster son Giygas, and the Eight Melodies she used to sing to him until Ninten's party helped her.
  • Parental Substitute: To Giygas, whom she saw as her own son.
"Oh! Giygas! I loved him, as if he was my own child... He was always wagging his tail, just like a pup..."
  • Posthumous Character: Technically.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Or queens, anyway. Her dress is pink to match the pink clouds covering the Magicant realm where she resides in.
  • Older Than They Look: Is implied that Queen Mary looks youthful while in Magicant, it's unknown if this is because she died young or that's how she projected herself there unconsciously. However, once she remembers, she talks as if she died of old age, just like her husband.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's nearly impossible to bring her up without mentioning Giygas or her relation to George and Ninten.

    George

George

Mentioned only in the prologue and at the end of the game, he is the reason for the alien invasion, as he stole a secret from Giygas' species. He is the husband of Maria and the great-grandfather of Ninten.

    Giygas

Giygas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Giygas_In-Battle_Mother_8682.png
The grim leader of the invading alien forces. He leads the invasion to take revenge for the human theft of his race's secrets, but his resolve crumbles when confronted with the memory of his beloved foster mother, though he swears to come back to finish the job.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Sort of. While official translations use exclusively masculine pronouns when referring to him, a gag line in EarthBound (1994) was translated into English a bit oddly, leading to an NPC appearing to seriously speculate about Giygas' gender, when said NPC was originally wondering if Giygas was able to amass so many followers due to being The Vamp.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The aliens' reasoning for abducting humans is never specified, and what they would have done with Earth had George not come into the picture is unknown. The sequel indicates that it most likely wasn't anything good, since the Hieroglyph Copy talks about how the invaders will "attack again".
  • Big Bad: Of both Earthbound Beginnings and most of its sequel. The events of Mother 3 also happen in part due to a trickle-down effect from Giygas's actions, though he himself is long since out of the picture at that point.
  • Boss Banter: The first phase of the fight is simply surviving his barrage while he monologues about his past and motives before offering to spare Ninten. When he realizes Ninten won't join him, he'll take back the offer and stay silent until you start singing, when he'll try to stop you with increasing difficulty.
  • Call a Human a "Meatbag": Will not hesitate to call humans "ugly Earth people".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: His attack on Earth spans, at the very least, all of Rural America, even though George was the only one the aliens really have reason to be angry at.
  • Dub Name Change: He's referred to as Gyiyg in the original Japanese version of both Earthbound Beginnings and Earthbound. However, in the official English versions, Earthbound changes his name to Giygas while Earthbound Beginnings changes it to Giegue. This was apparently due to both games having different localization teams. note
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: His lingering love for his foster human mother Maria turns out to be his Achilles' Heel when Ninten and friends confront him.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Ninten. Both Giygas and Ninten were raised in very loving environments, with secrets of their ancestry and PSI being withheld from them. However, whereas Giygas ended up revolting against his family when he found out said secrets and wants to make Earth pay for it, Ninten ended up embracing his heritage after discovering the secrets kept from him and strives to save the Earth from Giygas' influence.
  • Evil Uncle: He's Ninten's granduncle through his adoption by Maria, and his designs for Earth and its denizens are hardly benevolent.
  • Final Boss: The final battle in this game is against him.
  • Fun with Palindromes: The Japanese spelling of his name, Gyiyg, is one.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: There are no hints of Gyiyg's existence until late in the endgame.
  • The Greys: He bears vague resemblance to one in MOTHER, although his appearance is pretty distinct from typical depictions of aliens in fiction by being (somewhat) cat-like. In Earthbound... not so much. The details of how he went from the first form to the second are, thankfully (or not), left up to our imaginations.
  • Happily Adopted: Maria loved him like her own son despite his being an alien. As a result, Giygas still thinks rather fondly of her.
  • Hidden Villain: While his alien soldiers have long been clearly established as the game's main antagonist faction by the time you reach him, nothing about Giygas himself is revealed until near the very end of the game.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Depending on the translation, his name has been translated a number of different ways: consistently "Gyiyg" in the Japanese versions of the games he appears in, later changed to the well-known "Giegue" in the original English prototype of EarthBound Beginnings before it was scrapped and retooled much later on, before being changed again years later to "Giygas" in EarthBound (1994). For the record, the fan franslation of MOTHER 1+2 went with Giygas for consistency's sake for English audiences, although this same change wasn't made for Beginnings once it was planned to be finally released.
  • Insectoid Aliens: Described as one in the novelization, although his in-game sprite is ambiguous, and it's debatable whether or not the aforementioned novel is canon, as it was not written by Itoi.
  • Invincible Villain: Even in this more normal state compared to his next appearance, Giygas cannot be harmed. Instead, you can only drive him off by reminding him of his love for Maria.
  • Kill All Humans: It soon becomes apparent that he has entirely forsaken any love for humans he may once have had, though he still seems to show some form of respect for Ninten, which is illustrated during his confrontation with Ninten and friends:
“Ninten! I am grateful to your family. Your Great-Grandparents, George and Maria raised me. But, George stole vital information from our planet that can be used to betray my people... And now, one of his descendants is obstructing our plans, and must be stopped!! Ninten! I am talking about you! Go home now! Perish with the rest of the ugly Earth People. Foolish one, you cannot do a thing with your meager powers... Powers worthy of a lowly insect. Ninten! You alone, I may save you. Just you alone. Board our Mother Ship with me. ...then, fall into long sleep with your friends and the other ugly Earth People.”
  • Light Is Not Good: He is white, in contrast to what later happens to him in the sequel.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Given his upbringing with George and Maria, Giygas, for all intents and purposes, is Ninten's great-uncle. Because of this, he is actually willing to spare Ninten at first, but decides to kill him with everyone else when he refuses.
  • Momma's Boy: He was one in his youth. He's still very much one even now, even if he won't admit it.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: He cannot be defeated through force; only reminding him of the love his human mother gave him can destroy his will to fight.
  • Not So Stoic: In the first part of the fight, he comes across as a standard alien conqueror. He tries to keep it up as the song is sung in the second part, but he quickly loses his composure and is reduced to begging until the song is finished, at which point he's forced to leave as he can't bear to continue his conquest.
  • Psychic Powers: So powerful that the main characters can't even comprehend the attacks he uses.
  • Red Baron: Bears the title "Universal Cosmic Destroyer" in EarthBound.
  • Sanity Slippage: As the party attempts to sing the Eight Melodies to him, he gradually becomes more and more unhinged, begging for them to stop. This is just a precursor for his appearance in the sequel where he's beyond insane.
  • Scary Dogmatic Aliens: His kind were initially curious of humans, but would neither forgive nor forget George fleeing back to Earth with knowledge of alien technology. They ordered Giygas to personally hunt down and destroy humanity. This created such turmoil in the alien's psyche that it culminated in a terrible end-result neither party truly wanted.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Or singing the monster to flight, as the case may be.
  • Tragic Monster: Especially once you learn what happens to him later...
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: If Maria's opinion of him is any indication; she grew to love the young Giygas as if he were her own child, and relates to Ninten and friends that he was always wagging his tail, only stopping when she would sing him lullabies.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Starts off as a generic conqueror. It doesn't last, and he gets worse as the song is sung.
"Stop singing. STOP singing! STOP! Stop the song! STOP IT!! STOP THAT SONG! You puny little Earth bugs! Shut up, and STOP singing!! The SONG... STOP IT!!! Stop... Pleeease, stop! ........ How could I be defeated by a song like that? I will... sometime... Ninten! We SHALL meet again!"
  • Walking Spoiler: At least in this game.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers only Ninten a place on his mothership because he's the great-grandson of his surrogate mother, Maria. Once Ninten makes it clear he will not abandon his friends and Earth to their fates, he starts trying to kill him, too.
  • We Will Meet Again: He makes this exact promise to Ninten, although it's never actually followed up on.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: His We Will Meet Again moment goes unfulfilled. The rest of his race also apparently never bothered with Earth anymore after his ultimate death in Earthbound.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: Even before his trope-naming sequel appearance, though it may be due to being such a powerful psychic that his powers appear incomprehensible to humans.
"The form of Giegue's attack was inexplicable!"
  • You Will Be Spared: He expresses willingness to spare Ninten, likely due to his relation to Maria. Of course, when he refuses the offer, he just decides to kill him along with everyone else.
