A major issue Newfoundland faces is that its economy is almost entirely dependent on cod fishing, and, just like in real life, over fishing is drastically depleting the cod stocks. In real life, the cod fisheries would collapse in the 90's, becoming the largest industrial closure in Canadian history with the Canadian government having to place a moratoriam on cod fishing to give the stocks time to replenish, a process that would last several decades. This lead to a massive change in the social, cultural, and economic landscape of Newfoundland and the other Atlantic provinces, with large amounts of their populations moving to other provinces. The federal government provided income assistance and funded programs to retrain those who lost their jobs when the fisheries collapsed so they could find work in other fields. That is not available here, as Newfoundland is independent, which is fueling the younger generations desire to unify with another country.
