Marines
Saint Kennard Burke/"Sir" Ken
The Player Character and Villain Protagonist of Dreams and Destiny.
- Accidental Misnaming: Has a habit of misremembering the names of people that he doesn't find noteworthy.
- The Ace: He was considered this among the World Nobles.
- Achey Scars: Shortly before his training with Vice Admiral Garp, Ace gives him a scar on his chest. The next time he sees Ace, his scar aches.
- A God Am I: Due to living separately from the rest of the world in Mariejois (a place that is literally called "The Holy Land"), he considers himself a god by inheriting "the blood of the world's creators". Unlike the rest of the World Nobles however he is shown to take his responsibility as a god very seriously.
- Almighty Janitor: His rank in the Marines is lower than what it should be due to his lack of skill in abilities outside of combat such as leadership and sailing.
- Always Someone Better:
- To the Straw Hat Pirates and Coby.
- The Great Ancestors and Ace are this to him.
- Ax-Crazy: In a series loaded with violent psychopaths, Ken STILL stands out as one of the most unhinged. To him, even the smallest threat is something that merits the maximum amount of force; this includes capturing live targets.
- Badass Boast:
- "Pirates killed my family, Captain. I am going to exterminate any of those scum I find. I am going to make sure no one else feels the same pain. And the best way to do that is to become a Marine, to climb as high and as fast as I can through the ranks. One day, I will tear apart this 'Age of Pirates' with mine own hands! I will make the Marines my sword, and I shall slay any who stand in the way of Justice!"
- "You don't need to be convinced, Vice Admiral. You've dedicated your life to hunting and killing pirates. The name of Garp the Hero brings many recruits to the Marine banner. I can see your strength. Still, these murderers and rapists run rampant across this world. Every minute another son loses a father, a mother loses a daughter to that scum. Train me to fight, and I'll dedicate every breath, every punch, every swing of my glaive, to becoming the greatest Marine to ever sail the Seven Seas. Train me to be strong, teach me what you can, and I will end this chaotic Era of the Pirates."
- Badass Family: When your grandfather is one of the "Five Elder Stars" of the World Nobles, you cannot be less than one of the most famous marines.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: His preferred dress code is a suit crafted by Alvin under his marine coat.
- The Beastmaster: One of only two people Icarus lets ride on his back.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: No matter the injury, after a good nap and a bite to eat he is as good as new, his skin unmarred. Since averted, as both he and Ace gave each other their first scars.
- Berserk Button: Just mention pirates and there's a 50% chance he will fall either into a ragefit or make a speech about how he will end the Age of Pirates.
- Big Damn Heroes: Pulls it off during the Water 7 Arc.
- Big Eater: Though unlike Luffy, he maintains his table manners.
- Born Winner: Has incredible potential due to having the blood of nineteen of the twenty kings who moved to Mariejois 800 years ago flowing through his veins. Mazrick has confirmed that his family tree has been carefully pruned and shaped since then.
- Blood Knight: Though not to the extent of Admiral Akainu. Ken loves a good fight – and it doesn't help that it's one of the few things in this world he's good at, to the point of being considered a genius. It doesn't matter the level of infamy, if he sees a pirate he'll go after them.
- Catchphrase:
- "I will end the Age of Pirates!"
- "Wash your neck!"
- Clothing Damage: What happens to most of his suits.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: What everyone sees him as. Becomes a literal one after eating the Cloud Cloud Fruit.
- Combat Sadomasochist: He tears himself apart on a regular basis, and seems to enjoy it. He genuinely believes pain is weakness leaving the body.
- Competence Zone: This guy reached the rank of Marine Captain (Select) before he reached twenty! Even more impressive when you realise he enlisted just after his 19th birthday. He holds the record for the fastest promotion through the ranks.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He personally witnessed the deaths of his parents and siblings at the hands of Fisher Tiger's attack on Mariejois. This led to him developing a deep seething hatred for Piracy.
- Determinator:
- Three thousand five hundred and forty-two. The number of times he claims to have fallen into an exhaustive coma after pushing himself beyond his limits during his childhood.
- Utterly unstoppable. Being boiled alive by tar and having the Power of the Sun turned fully on him won't keep him down. He is an Endurance Predator.
- Empowered Badass Normal: He eats the Cloud Cloud Fruit during the Water 7 Arc, a Logia-type Devil Fruit not seen since the Void Century.
- Elemental Embodiment: He is a Cloud Man. This gives him the ability to use Solid Clouds and Elemental Powers such as Shock and Awe, Blow You Away, Making a Splash, and An Ice Person.
- Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: As it turns out, clouds beat lightning. Not only do clouds produce lightning, it charges up the cloud.
- Even the Guys Want Him: It's not only female civilians who get heart-shaped eyes when he walks into a room.
- Famed In-Story: The saviour of both Kameloth and Water 7.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Considers scars gained in battle valiant.
- For Great Justice: His philosophy.
- Knight of Cerebus: Acts as this for the Straw Hat Pirates. His arrival causes an almost complete party wipe for the crew, if not for Vice Admiral Garp's explicit orders to capture them alive.
- Implacable Man: Nothing will stop him in his pursuit of ridding the world of Pirates. Once he sets his eyes on one, he will not stop chasing them down. Not even city busting attacks will stop him, as Ace unfortunately found out.
- Meaningful Name: He didn't take the name Ken just because his real name started with it. Ken the Marine is a superhero Saint Kennard created in his youth.
- Playing with Fire: Has faced Fire Fist Ace in battle three times now.
- Pretty Boy: Mazrick has confirmed that, like Cavendish, he would be drawn in a way that Oda exclusively reserves for his beautiful female characters.
- Runaway Fiancé: Was supposed to marry Saint Shalulia but he left Mariejois to start his quest instead.
- Signature Laugh: "Kokoko..."
- Training from Hell: What he went through during his childhood. Notable trainers included Rob Lucci, the strongest member of Cipher Pol 9; Sonney, a member of Cipher Pol Aegis, the strongest intelligence organization among Cipher Pol; and Ashrey the Sickle, a New World veteran.
- Underdressed for the Occasion: After his last suit made by Alvin was destroyed, he went out into the night during Aqua Laguna in a pair of trainers. And nothing else.
- Verbal Tic: Subverted. Unlike many other World Nobles, the Burkes didn't end their sentences with "eh".
Pirates
Portgas D. Ace
A member of the Whitebeard Pirates, Luffy's older brother by way of adoption and Ken's rival.
- Always Someone Better:
- To Luffy and Ken.
- Blackbeard to him.
- Badass in Distress:
- Was losing his battle against Blackbeard until Ken joined in.
- Had been clashing with Enel with no end in no sight until Ken arrived on the scene and one shotted the Lightning Logia.
- After Ken had stalled him for half-a-day, he realised he had made a tactical error but it was too late and he was captured by the Marine Vice Admirals answering the Buster Call on Water 7.
- Big Brother Instinct: Protects Luffy from both Blackbeard and Ken.
- Elemental Punch: The Fire Fist, his Signature Move and where he gets his title from.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: While in Paradise looking for Blackbeard, he gets a scar on the left side of his face from Ken. This is funny in retrospect as he now bears an even closer resemblance to his adopted family.
- Mr. Fanservice: Permanently shirtless.
- Know When to Fold 'Em: Decides to book it after realizing how much damage Ken can endure, and catching sight of the Buster Call ships on the horizon.
- Ornamental Weapon: He carries a dagger on his belt that he's never actually been shown using.
- Playing with Fire: Ate the Flame Flame Fruit, a Logia-type Devil Fruit.
- Power of the Sun: When trapped in a bear hug by Ken with 5 Marine Vice Admirals bearing down on them, he unleashed all the power of his Devil Fruit on Ken in a final attempt to escape. Ken held on.
- Red Baron: "Fire Fist".
- Revenge: His main motive for pursuing Blackbeard is to avenge his former friend Thatch, who has been killed by Blackbeard.
- Tattooed Crook:
- His arm has "ASCE" inked on it, with the S crossed out.
- On his back he proudly displays the Whitebeard Pirate crossbones.
Cipher Pol 9
Rob Lucci
The current Chief of Cipher Pol 9.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: He wears a two-piece black suit with the sleeves normally rolled up, complete with black leather shoes and a white tie and handkerchief in the breast pocket.
- Beard of Evil: He sports a black goatee.
- Famed In-Story: Trained a young Saint Kennard.
- Genius Bruiser: Both helped Saint Kennard figure out the Dragon Style martial art from half-ruined manuals and, as he himself couldn't use it, incorporated the principals of the style into his Rokushiki.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: Was this to Spandam.
- Adaptational Badass:
- Rather than eating a normal Zoan-type Devil Fruit as in canon, he was gifted a Mythical Zoan-type one by Saint Kennard. The animal? Cat Cat Fruit: Model Byakko.
- He awakens his Armament Haki during his fight with X. Drake.
- Pirate Parrot: He isn't a pirate, but he does have a pet bird. Hattori speaks entirely for him while he's undercover while he passes himself off as being mute.
Spandam
The former Chief of Cipher Pol 9.
- 0% Approval Rating: No one liked this guy, even his own subordinates didn't respect him.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: Inverted. He was the weakest member of Cipher Pol 9. He was even weaker than the average Marine.
- Killed Off for Real: Publicly executed on Water 7 under the guise of being a Revolutionary and assassinating Mayor Iceburg.
- Like Father, Like Son: Rob Lucci reveals his father is just as incompetent.
- Mask Power: Wore an iron mask on his face, which didn't really cover most of his features.
- Mouth Stitched Shut: Suffered this fate to prevent him from talking during his execution.
- Too Dumb to Live: Like in canon, he accidentally used the Golden Den Den Mushi and summons a Buster Call. This time it happened on Water 7.
Fukuro
A member of Cipher Pol 9.
- Loose Lips: As soon as he realised who Ken really was, he blurted it out for anyone to hear. Which Enel did.
- Mouth Stitched Shut: Alvin does this to prevent him from telling anyone else Ken's true nature.
- Verbal Tic: He often says the word "Chapapa".
- Vocal Dissonance: Is big and round but has the voice of a small child.
Kaku
A member of Cipher Pol 9.
- Adaptational Badass: Instead of eating a normal Zoan-type Devil Fruit, he ate X. Drake's Ancient Zoan-type one after he was killed by Rob Lucci, giving him the ability to transform into a theropoda dinosaur.
Other Characters
Shirou Kotomon
A mercenary swordsman.
- Badass Normal: He doesn't appear to have any Devil Fruit abilities, but he's still an extremely powerful swordsman.
- Black Swords Are Better: Reinforces his swords with Armament Haki, which in concentrated form becomes visible as a black layer over whatever it's applied to.
- Dual Wielding: He wields two swords in battle.
- Friendly Enemy: Introduced as the bodyguard of Marshal Burnett, an arc antagonist. However, both he and Ken were respectful towards one another and once he was left on the brink of death and his master had abandoned him, Ken had Uma store him. Once he was unstored and his injuries treated, Ken hired him himself.
- Purple Is Powerful: He wears a dark purple robe.
- Rapid Aging: Wielding Excalibur seems to have aged him three decades or more. His mohawk went completely white, and his face now bears heavy wrinkles.
- Red Baron: "Oni" and "Demon of the Blue".
- Signature Laugh: "Yahaha..."
- Spell My Name With An S: There was some minor contention on whether his first name is "Shiro" or "Shirou". Mazrick eventually settled on the latter.
- Worthy Opponent: Views Ken as one.
- You Shall Not Pass!: Attempted to stop Ken from going after his sworn master. It didn't work out.
Alvin Stormington
Ken's personal Battle Tailor.
- Action Fashionista: He supplies Ken with his outfits, ranging from a basic Marine uniform to his various suits.
- Badass Normal: Like Shirou, he doesn't appear to have any Devil Fruit abilities, however he reminds Ken of his childhood trainers and has fought numerous heavy hitters.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: What did you expect?
- Culture Equals Costume: Currently in the ninety-third strata.
- Javelin Thrower: Of the Harpoon variety.
- Signature Laugh: "Popapa..."
- Spell My Name With An S: Like with "Shirou", there was some minor contention on the spelling of "Bishamon".
- True Craftsman: Combat garments.
- War God: Bishamon appears to be the god of Battle Tailors.
Enel
The former God of Skypiea.
- A God Am I: Much like his canon self. Not that it helped him against Ken.
- Bolt of Divine Retribution: El Thor.
- Killed Off for Real: Struck down by Ken while trying to flee.
- Oh, Crap!:
- Likely had one when Garp arrived at Enies Lobby.
- Had another one when he realized that his electrical attacks only made Ken stronger.
- Person of Mass Destruction: Rampaged through Enies Lobby before Garp sent him running.
- Playing with Fire: He fought Fire Fist Ace on Water 7.
- Signature Laugh: "Yahaha..."
- Sinister Surveillance: His Devil Fruit-enhanced Observation Haki enabled him to keep tabs on every person on Water 7. It's how he discovered that Ken was a World Noble.
