Namekians (ナメック星人, Namekku-seijin)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/namekians_173.png

The second major alien race within Dragon Ball. Namekians are able to make their own set of Dragon Balls, note  of which the best-known Earth's Dragon Balls are based. The Namekians also have the most diverse powerset of any species outside of the Kais with them being able to regenerate, heal others, unlock others' hidden potential, create objects out of thin air, stretch body parts, grow to huge sizes, communicate mentally, and sense energy and even characters' alignment.

Long before the main story, the Namekians were brought to the brink of extinction after the weather changed on their planet. The son of Katas, who would be known as the Nameless Namekian, was sent off-world so he could at least survive. In the end, Guru was the only survivor and he spent over one-hundred years repopulating the planet with his children.

Then, the tyrant known as Frieza learned about the Dragon Balls and invaded Namek so he could wish for immortality. The Frieza Force along with Vegeta exterminated the Namekians to the point that Piccolo and Kami were the only survivors until King Kai and Guru managed to bring most of the Namekians back using the Earth's Dragon Balls. After a long battle with the Super Saiyan, Frieza destroyed Planet Namek, forcing the Namekians to rebuild on a new world using their own Dragon Balls.

They have remained allies and friends with the Z-Fighters since helping in any way that they can like letting them use their Dragon Balls and taking Dende to Earth so he could become their new Guardian after Kami and Piccolo merged.

Universe 6, the twin universe of Universe 7, have their own Namekians.

    General
  • Absurdly Huge Population: Inverted. By the time of the Namek Saga, there are only about 110 Namekians on the planet including Guru himself since a great drought brought them to the edge of extinction. Presumably, their numbers have grown since the incident with Frieza.
  • Alien Blood: Namekians bleed purple blood.
  • Animal Motifs: They're represented by slugs.
  • Apocalypse Not: Despite the disaster in the past, and more recently the destruction of their home planet by Frieza, the Namekian civilization continues on a new planet.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Namekians can grow gigantic and increase their strength like Saiyans, but unlike Oozaru, the giant forms are very slow. So far, only Slug is able to retain some decent measure of speed, but he's still outpaced by Piccolo and Goku. Later, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero has Piccolo use the form and be able to keep some measure of speed like Slug, but as Piccolo admits, it doesn't produce a significant power boost, it's mainly a bluff.
  • Badass Pacifist: Namekians (or more accurately, Guru's Namekian children), are not known for fighting and would rather convince their opponent to leave or stop what they're doing rather than fight. That said, Namekians are rather powerful in their own right, with Nail being stronger than every member of the Ginyu Force sans Ginyu himself despite the planet not having any evidence of conflict before.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Namekians are typically very nice and reasonable with those they come across, though if their people are threatened in any way, they ''will' make an effort to fight back to the end. Even the elders and children will do what they can to attempt to save their people.
  • Black Sheep: The original King Piccolo and Piccolo. They're both ruthless Blood Knights who tried to Take Over the World and spread terror across the Earth For the Evulz. This is because both Piccolos are the evil half of Kami who was originally the Nameless Namekian who became corrupted from living on Earth. The normal Namekians are very peaceful. Even after Piccolo becomes good, he finds the Namekians' slow, mellow lifestyle to be boring.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Namekians give birth to their children by vomiting eggs like King Piccolo. They also have visible musculature, antennas, the ability to regrow anything so long as their heads are intact, and green skin (the muscles are pink, pale yellow in the manga and occasionally in the anime).
  • Can't Catch Up: The Namekian warriors are very strong, to the point that the three warriors who tried to help Moori were stronger than most of the Saiyans. But unlike the Saiyans, they lack transformations or zenkais, so they do not have the same potential. Until Super Hero showed that condition about transformations isn't quite true.
  • Conlang: Uniquely, Namekians have their own unique language, though they are mainly shown speaking the native language of whatever dub they're in. This is how they manage to enforce a password on Porunga for the Namek saga, you need to speak Namekian for him to understand and grant the wish.
  • Cosmic Plaything: They really can't catch a break: first an unknown cataclysm drives their race to the brink of extinction then, as they were just beginning to bounce back from that, Frieza and his men invade the planet and ruthlessly slaughter anyone they felt like in search of the Dragon Balls, followed shortly by Vegeta who does the same thing for his own needs, and then Frieza blows Namek up, they lose their long-lived Grand Elder and an entire village permanently, and finally Moro targets them in Super's manga, losing yet another Grand Elder.
  • Death Is Cheap: Averted. It's noted in the Buu saga that Guru didn't give Porunga the ability to bring multiple people back to life due to not believing in the resurrections of their dead. It's later played straight as Frieza's decimation of their people would have left them extinct, and so the new elder altered Porunga's rules accordingly.
  • Defiant to the End: Despite being a peace-loving species, nearly all Namekians shown are willing to defy stronger opponents to the end, even those who can't fight back are willing to verbally taunt their enemy.
  • Eating Optional: Dende states that Namekians only need to drink water for sustenance. Though in a filler episode, Piccolo complained about having fish again and is seen with a plate of food. This shows that Namekians only eat for pleasure rather than to live.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Namekians noticeably have prominent fangs which can be seen when they are more expressive, but beyond King Piccolo and Slug, this trope is inverted, as Namekians are a peace-loving species.
  • Fusion Dance: Namekians of the same caste can fuse to create one powerful Namekian. However, unlike the other fusions in Dragon Ball, it's permanent and one Namekian forever loses their identity while the main vessel has his personality altered. The power jump also isn't as drastic compared to the other fused characters.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: All Namekians can regenerate as long as their heads are intact. It takes, however, a lot of energy to regenerate and too much damage inflicted too quickly will kill them before they can heal. And unlike the usual fictional Healing Factor, it needs to be consciously activated.
  • Healing Factor: All Namekians have this, they can even regrow back most of their entire body as long as their head remains intact. However, their ability to regenerate is both a conscious effort and requires a good deal of energy to activate, so if a Namekian takes too much damage to their body, they're as good as dead. This means can also be killed by rather conventional means, such as snapping their neck.
  • Healing Hands: Dragon-class Namekians can heal using their hands. So far, we have only seen Dende use this ability.
  • Hermaphrodite: Namekians are hermaphrodites that possess physiques similar to those of human males.
  • In-Series Nickname: Occasionally referred to as Nameks instead of Namekians by various characters.
  • Long-Lived: They can easily live for hundreds of years. Kami was over three hundred years old and Guru was even older than him before dying of old age. The oldest Namekian with a confirmed age is Monaito, who is over 500 years old.
  • Magic Knight: Warrior-type Namekians like Piccolo and Nail are this since they are not only extremely powerful, but they have mystical abilities like being able to create objects or clothes out of thin air.
  • Mighty Glacier: Both Piccolo and Slug show that they can be giant versions of themselves, which also boosts their strength. However, unlike Saiyan's Oozaru forms, they do not retain their speed, making this impractical against faster opponents.
  • Mysterious Past:
    • Any history prior to the great disaster that ruined Namek is unknown, we don't even know what it was specifically that wiped out the Namek people, and outside of speculation, we may never truly know.
    • As revealed in Super they're not originally native to Universe 7. Where they came from has not been revealed.
  • Nice Guy: King Kai described them as a peaceful race. The Nameless Namekian, who became Kami and Piccolo, became corrupted and lost his gentle nature.
  • Noodle Incident: Super says that they are not the original creators of the dragon balls, and instead were first able to create them after chipping off a small piece of the Super Dragon Balls as their base to work with. How they managed to do this is not touched upon, as not even the Gods of multiple universes knew of their existence for quite some time, let alone how to find them. Possibly related, they're not actually native to Universe 7 either, having migrated there from an unknown realm for unknown reasons.
  • No Biological Sex: They are often assumed to be all male, but their method of reproduction places them pretty firmly into this category.
  • One-Gender Race: Namekians are designed after slugs and reproduce asexually (by laying eggs with their mouth). That said, their secondary sexual characteristics are distinctly male.
  • Planet of Hats: We are introduced to the Namekians by Piccolo and Kami, who were originally one person. Everyone in the race is green, reproduces asexually, belongs to one gender (male), has mystical abilities, and is peace-loving except for Piccolo, who was the Nameless Namekian's evil side that was corrupted by living on Earth. Part of the reason for the uniformity is that the Nameks we see in the main story, except the Nameless Namekian, all came from one father after the race was brought to the brink of extinction. This means any culture or other unique differences would be all but lost since everyone came from the same gene pool and was raised by the same person. However, there are still subtypes or 'classes.' There are two castes; the Dragon Caste (consisting of those with magical abilities and able to create Dragon Balls, i.e. Dende and Kami) and the Warrior Caste, those who are powerful in combat (Nail and the original King Piccolo.) Piccolo Jr. (the good one) could be considered a hybrid due to being a fusion (but lacks Kami's abilities to create the Dragon Balls).
  • Practically Different Generations: Guru's children range from being little children to old people like Moori.
  • Psychic Powers: This seems to be an innate Namekian trait since synchronizing his with Dende allowed Goku to escape from Hell in GT.
  • Rapid Aging: It seems to wildly vary from member to member, but Namekians tend to reach adulthood rather quickly, Piccolo reached adulthood by the time he was three, while Kami and King Piccolo reached an elderly appearance by their late 200's approximately, even though this is about the halfway point in their lives.
  • Secret-Keeper: Their dragon balls were a very well-kept secret for hundreds of years to everyone who wasn't a native to Namek. It's only during the Saiyan Saga do the dragon balls become much more known, via Piccolo bragging about Goku's revival with them to Raditz, allowing Vegeta, Nappa, and the Frieza Force to discover them.
  • Sizeshifter: They can grow several times their height, which is really something, considering they can tower over the average human.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: The Namekians as a whole are hardly a footnote after Frieza's saga, with only Dende and Piccolo having any real significance. However, if it wasn't for their existence, the end of the Buu Saga would have been very different.
  • Superpower Lottery: They are naturally strong, can heal as long as their heads are intact, and have mystical powers that allow them to create objects or clothes out of thin air, heal others, and create the titular Dragon Balls. Only the gods themselves rival the Namekians in mystical abilities.
  • Super-Senses: They have an acute sense of hearing to the point that whistling can cause them a great deal of pain.
  • Synchronization: Namekians have two versions of this. One where they can purge their evil and good halves from each other, which in addition to weakening both halves significantly, their lives are linked to one another and will perish if either one of them dies. Luckily, both will be revived if only one is brought back to life. The other version is specific to Dragon-caste Namekians: After creating the Dragon Balls, they will become inert if their creator dies.
  • Telepathy: Guru, Piccolo, and Dende were all able to have some form of telepathy to communicate with others, presumably, this is an innate Namekian trait.
  • Truly Single Parent: A single Namekian can give birth to hundreds of children. This was how Guru repopulated Planet Namek after he was the sole survivor, outside of the Nameless Namekian who was sent to Earth.
  • Voodoo Shark: The "Granolah Arc" reveals that Namekians are not native to Universe 7 and have settled on numerous planets, which brings the question as to why so many Namekians settled on Namek, named this particular planet Namek and not every planet they settled on as such, or what happened to the other Namekians out there in the universe outside of the ones on Namek or Cereal.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Whistling can incapacitate even the strongest Namekian since their hearing is so powerful.

Namek & New Namek

    Dende

    Nail

Nail (ネイル, Neiru)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nail_artwork.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Katsuji Mori (Z), Taiten Kusunoki (Kai)
Voiced by (English): Ward Perry (Z Season 2), Scott McNeil (Z Season 4-5; flashbacks) (Ocean dub); Sean Schemmel (Funimation dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): Abel Rocha, Roberto Mendiola (Kai)

A Namekian who served as the personal bodyguard to Grand Elder Guru. He was the most powerful Namekian alive at the time of Frieza's attack on Namek.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Frieza tears off his arm during their extremely one-sided fight. Nail, being the Determinator he is, simply grows another arm and fights on.
  • Battle Butler: To Guru, being the strongest warrior of Namek.
  • Big Brother Instinct: To Dende. It's shown best after fusing with Piccolo during the battle with Frieza - Piccolo tells Dende to keep safe and loses it when he's killed by Frieza.
  • The Bus Came Back: Makes a small and quick appearance in Super inside Piccolo's subconscious along with Kami during his battle against the Universe 6 Namekians in the Tournament of Power.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The power boost he gives Piccolo during their fusion is the main reason Piccolo and by extension, the Earth's dragon balls survive Frieza's assault, which in turn allows all of the Namekians to be revived. Nail himself discusses the trope with Piccolo before he merged with him, noting if he had merged with Kami and become whole again, he would have no problem beating Frieza. Notably, Nail did not know Frieza's other transformations or even that he could.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ends up on the receiving end of one courtesy of Frieza. Only by merging with Piccolo does he "survive".
  • Deadpan Snarker: In the early Funimation dub, he was prone to some sarcastic remarks especially towards Frieza. This was done away with in the 2005 redub of the early episodes and not ever brought out again in Kai. Surprisingly, even the heavily edited Ocean Group dub kept him in line with how he is usually portrayed in modern DB dubs.
  • Death of Personality: Subverted. Nail insists to Piccolo that he'll stop existing and only act as a power boost once they fuse, but a lot of his personality traits (his stoicism, love for his race, sense of duty, and friendship with Dende) carry over to Piccolo. In the original Z, some degree of him seems to be still alive within Piccolo's psyche, at least up to the end of the Frieza arc and with a small quip when Dende later becomes the new Guardian of Earth, but this was done away with in Kai.
  • Fusion Dance: He fused with Piccolo, so he ceased to exist as an individual character.
  • Identical Stranger: Looks the same as Piccolo.
  • Informed Attribute: He's supposedly stronger than any of the Ginyu Force besides Ginyu himself, but he never gets a chance to show off his power before he's put in a Curb-Stomp Battle with Frieza.
  • Made of Iron: It's how he survived his battle with Frieza.
  • Meaningful Name: Along with the obligatory snail pun for every Namekian other than Piccolo and Kami, Nail is the nail (as in, for want of a nail) that causes Piccolo to survive long enough for Earth's Dragon Balls to revive the Namekian race. This allows it to prosper after Frieza's ultimate fall.
  • Nice Guy: Comes off as a genuinely honorable warrior, even offering his life force and power to Piccolo in his dying moments. He also cares deeply about Dende, as shown by his reaction (from inside Piccolo's thoughts) when he sees the former die by Frieza's death beam.
  • The Stoic: Rarely changes his expression.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: For Piccolo in the first half of the Frieza saga. Fittingly enough, they become the same person.
  • This Cannot Be!: Practically says this verbatim after Dende's death.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Guru and his race as a whole.
  • Villain Respect: While not gaining as much as Goku or his father did, Nail did earn praise from Frieza for his tenacity and his power level which was superior to everyone in the Ginyu Force except their leader.
  • Vocal Evolution: Sean Schemmel's take on Nail started out raspy and sarcastic but gradually deepened over the years until it was a similar pitch to his counterpart Piccolo.
  • The Worf Effect: His official power level has him as strong as the three main Ginyu Force members, Recoome, Burter, and Jeice, to the point where Guru was about to send him to fight them. Frieza makes short work out of him without even using full power.
  • World's Strongest Man: Before Piccolo took over he was the strongest Namekian by a large margin. His power stood at 42,000, making him on par with the Ginyu Force outside of Ginyu himself.

    Grand Elder Guru

Grand Elder Guru (最長老, Saichōrō)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/280px-gurunamek_8664.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Junpei Takiguchi (Z ep. 53-75, Kai), Masaharu Sato (Z ep. 100-105, Xenoverse), Yasunori Masutani (Kakarot)
Voiced by (English): Robert O. Smith (Z ep. 41), David Kaye (Z ep. 48) (Ocean dub); Christopher Sabat (Z), Bill Jenkins (Kai) (Funimation dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): Armando Réndiz

The oldest and wisest Namekian on the planet before the Frieza Saga and the creator of the Namekian Dragon Balls and the dragon Porunga. He also has the ability to unlock someone's hidden potential by placing his hand on their head; he did this for Krillin, Gohan, and Dende.

  • Cool Old Guy: Arguably the most humble.
  • Death by Despair: Died after the stress and trauma of his peoplenote  being slaughtered by Frieza finally got to him. He was resurrected and died of natural causes a short while later.
  • Dub Name Change: The Latin American Spanish dub refers to him as "Grand Patriarch", with no mention of his Guru name.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": In the Japanese version and the Kai dub, he's only referred to as the Grand Elder.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Despite how heartbroken everyone was, he was perfectly fine accepting his natural death. This is played more straight after he is briefly revived to explain to his people about the destruction of Namek and choose his successor, before dying for real by natural causes shortly after.
  • Killed Off for Real: Subverted when he dies of despair over his children's deaths but played straight after he dies again - since he dies from natural causes, he can't be revived by the Dragon Balls.
  • Large and in Charge: Except he's far too old to put up a fight, but still the biggest Namekian.
  • Mister Seahorse: Gave birth to 109 Namekians, including Dende and Nail.
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: Well, father, but he has 109 children, having repopulated the Namekian race after all of them besides Piccolo and Kami were wiped out.
  • Really 700 Years Old: 501 years old at the time of his death. Only the Nameless Namekian that separated into Kami and King Piccolo was older than him (born 19 years before Guru, 239 years old when he split himself). The way he spoke of the Nameless Namekian suggested the latter was still a child even to him when the cataclysm occurred, and he seemed to have some knowledge about the "Legendary Super Saiyan".
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is the leader of Namekians and the father of all Namekians.
  • Telepathy: He can talk to people through his mind. He uses this to communicate with Dende to tell him the last wish to make on the Namekian Dragon Balls.
  • Super-Empowering: Guru is able to unlock some huge reserves of power in Dende, Gohan, and Krillin.

    Katas
See the Families page for information on Katas.

    Grand Elder Moori

Grand Elder Moori (ムーリKan, Mūri)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/moori.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Kinpei Azusa (Dragon Ball Z), Ryōichi Tanaka (Dragon Ball Z Kai)
Voiced by (English): Don Brown (Z Season 2), Scott McNeil (Z ep. 159), Lee Tockar (most of Z Season 4 and all of Season 6) (Ocean dub); Mark Britten (Z Season 3-4), Christopher Sabat (Z Season 6 and Z ep. 100; originally, Z Movie 6, GT), Eric Dillow (Z Season 2), Eric Vale (Z ep. 100 only; remastered), Barry Yandell (Kai) (Funimation dub); Doug Rand (Z Movie 6 only) (AB Groupe/"Big Green" dub)
Voiced by (Latin American Spanish): José Luis McConnell (Z), Ernesto Casillas (Z and Kai: The Final Chapters) Alfonso Ramírez (Kai)

Originally a village elder and Dende and Cargo's guardian, he was killed by Dodoria. He was revived and became the successor to Guru as Grand Elder after the events of the Namek saga. His village housed the six-star dragon ball.

  • Back for the Dead: Returns in the Galactic Prisoner arc of Super to die at the hands of Cranberry, a former Frieza goon. For added cruel irony, Cranberry was killed during the same attack that took his life the first time, although he died before Moori. Moori is eventually revived after Moro's death, though.
  • The Cameo: His only appearance in GT is from the back once again wishing to Porunga so that the freshly destroyed Earth can be restored.
  • Cool Old Guy: A very humble geezer who is willing to help Goku for saving Namek. In the Buu Saga, he playfully messes with Dende upon seeing him for the first time in seven years.
  • Neck Snap: Dodoria breaks his neck after he and Freeza take his village's Dragon Ball and kill Cargo.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In Super, he names Esca Grand Elder when an invasion of New Namek happens because he foresaw his own death, putting the young Namekian in charge of Porunga. However, Moori later dies when Moro and Cranberry were aiming to use the Dragon Balls, which means their plans would have been brought to a halt right then and there had he not decided to transfer ownership of Porunga.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is the leader of the Namekians.
  • The Runner-Up Takes It All: Elder Tsuno was Guru's initial choice to succeed him as the Grand Elder, but since he was not restored, note  the dying elder bequeathed his position to Moori who serves in the role for the remainder of Z.
  • Vocal Evolution: Chris Sabat's voice as Moori was never very consistent. His being restored to life had him sporting a very obvious Texan accent and was fairly high-pitched. His voice in the Kid Buu Saga and The Return of Cooler gave Moori a gravelly sounding and deeper tone not dissimilar to his Guru.

    Elder Tsuno

Elder Tsuno (ツーノ長老 Tsūno Chōrō)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsuno_dokkan.png
Voiced by (Japanese): Naoki Tatsuta (Dragon Ball Z), Masato Hirano (Dragon Ball Z Kai)
Voiced by (English): Peter Kelamis (Ocean dub); Eric Dillow (Z), Bryan Massey (Kai) (Funimation dub)

Another village elder who has the misfortune of having his village raided and slaughtered by Vegeta. Circumstances beyond his control prevent his populace from being restored to life with the rest of the Frieza Force's victims, leaving them permanently dead. He guarded the four-star star dragon ball.

  • Adaptation Expansion: The manga cuts away when Vegeta mocks Tsuno for refusing him the dragon ball and it only cuts back just as the prince bashes in the skull of the last remaining villager before turning his attention on Tsuno himself. The animated version expands the confrontation by showing the village's warrior-type nameks attempting to kill Vegeta after he kills a random villager who shielded Tsuno from a blast
  • Captain Obvious: In the manga, when he feels that Vegeta isn't on the level, Vegeta sarcastically retorts "No fooling!?" before he goes about slaughtering the entire settlement. As if his extremely rude demanding of their dragon ball combined with his refusal to even divulge what his wish would be when asked wasn't a big giveaway.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: His warrior-type namekians never stood a chance against Vegeta.
  • Defiant to the End: He refuses to hand over his village's dragon ball to Vegeta even after seeing everyone but him mercilessly killed by the evil prince. Vegeta mocks the old man for his stubbornness before vaporizing him. It's implied in the anime he was still going to put up a fight even after Vegeta initially leaves him alone, only for the mass-murderer to turn around and kill him anyway.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Implied; he cradles the body of an already dead child as he curses Vegeta. Said kid could not have been much older than Dende and Cargo...
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: Once Tsuno himself is all that is left, he declares that Vegeta does not simply possess evil within him, he IS evil incarnate and still refuses to give up his dragon ball. An unimpressed Vegeta proceeds to blow him up. After many more arcs of character development, Vegeta has grown to regret his actions on Old Namek, and Moori grants forgiveness.
  • I Knew There Was Something About You: Tsuno refuses to part with his dragon ball due to sensing "something evil" within Vegeta, who does not bother with the pleasantries or the faux remorse that Frieza demonstrates with the other village heads.
  • Killed Off for Real: Due to Vegeta already have broken away from Frieza's employ, Mr. Popo's wish to Shenron that "all killed by Frieza and his men” did not include Tsuno's villagers, leaving them all dead forever. Vegeta bragged about it to the Namekians who were revived after being teleported to Earth by Porunga, much to their rage. The Moro arc makes it clear that due to their cultural view on the afterlife, Moori and the rest left the four-star villagers dead.
  • No Body Left Behind: Vegeta vaporizes him along with the poor child already dead within his arms when the former still refuses to give over the dragon ball.
  • Taking the Bullet: Vegeta mockingly points a gun gesture at Tsuno before firing a ki blast at the elder. One of the younger namekians shields his elder from the blast and dies instead, much to the old man's dismay.

    Esca

Esca

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/captura_de_tela_2023_10_15_204619.png

A small Namekian child who is being trained to be the new grand elder. He becomes the sole survivor of Moro's rampage across New Namek.

  • Ascended Extra: Esca was a background character in chapter 514 of the original manga. He became relevant in the Galactic Prisoner arc of Super.
  • Expy Coexistence: Jaco takes Esca to Earth, where he meets Dende on the Lookout, the character who heavily inspired Esca's role in the earlier half of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc.
  • Healing Hands: He saves Goku and Vegeta's necks with this ability.
  • History Repeats: As a Sole Survivor of a genocidal attack on the Namekians, his circumstances are eerily similar to Dende's during the original Namek arc.
  • Sole Survivor: Like Dende, he's a Namekian kid with healing abilities who narrowly survives his race's destruction at the hands of an evil warlord, with the perpetrator being Moro instead of Frieza.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He fills the role of the "white mage" during Goku and Vegeta's battle against Moro on New Namek, just as Dende did for Krillin, Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo during the original Namek arc.

Cereal

    Monaito

Monaito

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monaitopng.png
The last surviving Namekian on Planet Cereal and guardian of the Cerealian Dragon Balls.
  • Cool Old Guy: Monaito is 500 years old and liked by the Sugarians.
  • Dented Iron: Downplayed, as his old age prevents him from being much of a threat and has weakened his healing abilities, but he was still brave enough to attack Bardock and raised his battle power to an impressive level, similar to the villagers on Namek attacked by Freeza's men. That said, Monaito's mystical power seems to vastly exceed any other Namekians seen so far, as his Dragon Balls are superior to all others except the Super Dragon Balls.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He's heartbroken by Granola's betrayal of his trust. Although, Granolah has the same reaction when he discovers that Monaito has been lying to him all his whole life.
  • Immigrant Patriotism: He hails from an offshoot Namekian clan that settled on Planet Cereal centuries ago. The Namekians peacefully coexisted with the native Cerealians until the Saiyans wiped out both tribes. Monaito gets along well with the planet's new settlers, the Sugarians.
  • Literal Genie: He indicates this is the case with Toronbo when talking to Granolah, saying that Granolah may have wished to become the strongest in the universe today, but there's no telling if that will remain true tomorrow.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Monaito allows Granolah to believe that the Saiyans and Freeza were solely responsible for the death of his mother. In reality, not only were the Heeters actually responsible (albeit, the Freeza Force was still culpable for most of the planet's destruction) but a conscientious Saiyan tried to save all of their lives on that fateful day. While Monaito had good intentions, lying proves to be his biggest regret, as it molded Granolah into the bitter, vengeful, and prejudiced person he is.
  • My Greatest Failure: He immensely regrets lying to Granolah about the fate of his mother, as it led to Granolah being hired by the Heeters, the ones actually responsible for her death. He comes to believe that accepting death would've been preferable to allowing Granolah to sell his soul to the villains.
  • Noodle Incident: After Granolah wishes to become the strongest being in the universe, Monaito mentions that this is the second time he's upended Granolah's life.
  • Sole Survivor: Monaito is the only survivor of the Namekian clan that resided in Planet Cereal.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He's an elderly Namekian with mystical abilities, has Immigrant Patriotism for his adoptive homeworld, is tied to the Dragon Balls of his planet, and is a father/mentor figure to a young Human Alien who had to grow up without being around his own species. All things considered, Monaito could pretty much be considered Planet Cereal's Kami.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Water, as with all Namekians. The Sugarians make sure he gets extra helpings.
  • You're Insane!: He angrily scolds Granolah for his selfishness and for ignoring his warnings and considers his obsession with revenge and lust for power to be downright madness.

The Eternal Dragon of Namek; he, like Shenron, can grant the wishes of one who collects the seven Dragon Balls of Namek. Created by Guru, he can be called on more often than Shenron, as a Namekian year is shorter than a year on Earth, meaning he can be summoned once every 103 days.

  • Achilles' Heel: Like other dragons, he'll die (and his balls will become inert) if his creator passes.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • Like Shenron, he can resurrect anyone back to life. Unlike the former, he can resurrect the same person more than once. The one thing he cannot do is revive someone who died of natural causes.
    • He himself was revived with Guru when Shenron revives the Namekians killed by Frieza and his men. Dende uses the final wish to send everyone from Namek to Earth while leaving Goku with Frieza to finish let them their fight.
  • Benevolent Genie: Even more so than Shenron; not only will he grant any wish that is within his power to the exact specifications of the wisher, he'll even go the extra mile at times, such as when he revived Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu. Instead of having them traverse Snake Way back to Earth, he sent them directly there.
    • During the Buu Saga when he's asked to recreate the Earth, despite his complaints that it isn't an easy wish, not only does he recreate the Earth, he rebuilds all the buildings Buu destroyed even though that wasn't part of the wish.
  • Can't Live Without You: Like with Shenron and Kami, his life is tied to Guru, so when Guru dies, so does Porunga. When Guru is about to pass on, he has the Namekian elder Moori inherit his role as the guardian of Namek and thus binding Porunga's life to his in turn.
  • Deadpan Snarker: One trait he does share with Shenron is his lack of patience and tendency to start sassing people who take too long to make their wish.
Porunga: "Look, I'm enjoying the fresh air and all, but I don't have all day. If you can't make up your mind, just wish for nothing three times so I can go."
Krillin: "Heh, a dragon with a sense of humor."
  • Death Is Cheap: Averted. It's noted in the Buu saga that Namekians didn't give Porunga the ability to bring multiple people back to life due to not believing in the resurrection of their dead. Played straight since the Namekians realize Frieza's decimation of their people would have left them extinct, and alter Porunga's powers accordingly.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: While he requires his wishes to be asked in Namekian, and resurrections are on a "one wish per person" basis, he's much more of a Benevolent Genie than Shenron, and he can grant three wishes instead of one or two (on top of being able to resurrect people more than once).
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When he grants a wish, his eyes glow brighter.
  • Heroic Build: He's much more a Benevolent Genie than Shenron ever was. He's also significantly more ripped than Shenron ever was.
  • Language of Magic: Any wish requested of him has to be worded in the Namekian language.
  • Literal Genie:
    • Inverted. Porunga is morally opposed to having a wish to kill an innocent person, so if a wish would lead to someone dying, he'll refuse to grant it. This appeared when everyone thought Goku died when Namek exploded and tried to wish him to the Check-in Station in Otherworld to wish him back to life on Earth, only for Porunga to reveal that not only was Goku still alive, but if he did grant the wish, then Goku would have died when moved to the Check-in Station. He also won't grant a wish that revives or moves a person if that person doesn't want to be moved or revived.
    • Played straight at least once; when Piccolo is revived during the Namek Saga, Gohan and Krillin use their second wish to transport him directly to Planet Namek. Piccolo ends up miles away from them because they didn't specify exactly where on Namek they wanted Porunga to send him.
  • Love God: Dende states that he's the Namekian god of love. While they are a mono-gendered species that reproduce asexually so even though romance wouldn't be important enough in their culture to warrant a major deity, Namekians do feel other kinds of love. Piccolo's familial bond with Gohan is the shining example. Though, this is a case of Dub Text, as in the original Japanese Porunga is the "God of Dreams", which would make far more sense for a wish granting dragon deity to be referred to as.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: There are rules regarding what kind of wishes Porunga can and can't grant and those rules are usually followed. Averted in the Buu Saga, where they change his rules in hindsight of what happened with Frieza.
  • Meaningful Name: In the Namekian language, his name translates to "Dragon of Dreams", or "Dragon of Law".
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Moori remakes Porunga after Guru's death, which boosts the dragon's power to revive entire populations instead of one person per wish.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He's much more ripped than Shenron. That said, Shenron is still the stronger dragon as far as raw power goes (since Shenron can resurrect an entire mass of people, whereas Porunga can only rez people one at a time). Averted by the Buu Saga when his power is increased, Porunga is able to revive every living thing on Earth.
  • Nice Guy: He's a bit of a Deadpan Snarker, but he's a bit more affable than Shenron and is firmly a Benevolent Genie.
  • Not So Stoic: Although he's more personable than Shenron is, he still maintains a calm and stoic air about him most of the time, until Bulma once told him "You're cute. I like you.", leading to a few sweat droplets appearing and a few stammers from the big dragon.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: After the Frieza incident, the new Namekian elder Moori decides to upgrade him to be able to revive multiple people at once. The Buu saga makes it clear that this was a wise decision.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: A wish-granting dragon that looks more like a crocodile-naga with Namekian antennae on his head. This applies to the difference between Porunga and Shenron as well as there are different rules.
  • Reality Warper: Like Shenron, this guy has the power to grant (almost) any wish. While difficult, he can recreate an entire planet.
  • Took a Level in Badass: His power is increased by the Buu Saga and the limit on the number of people he can bring back is removed, allowing him to revive every living thing on Earth.
  • Vocal Evolution: Inverted; his voice in the Frieza Saga's dub was at first very distinct from Shenron's and a bit raspy when summoned before the Frieza fight. By the time he returned with Guru's brief revival, he pretty much sounded like his Earth counterpart except a little more baritone. Porunga has pretty much stayed that way ever since.

The dragon created by the son of Katas before he became Kami. Black Star Shenron's dragon balls have blacked stars in their cores rather than the usual red. They also scatter across the universe once a wish has been granted and will destroy their last host planet if the dragon balls are not reclaimed within a year.

  • Advertised Extra: He appears in GT's opening credits, yet only shows up in two whole episodes before being erased from existence.
  • Cessation of Existence: When the Earth is destroyed, Piccolo (who by this point had merged back with Kami) dies in the cataclysm. This causes the Black Star dragon balls to lose their magic and Black Star Shenron can never be summoned again.
  • Deadly Upgrade: The Black Star Dragon Balls were created to bypass any wish limitations the other Eternal Dragons had. But this is done at the cost of the host planet being marked with a one-year expiration date, after which it is destroyed, if the Black Star Dragon Balls are not collected and returned in time. Because of this drawback, no one dared to use them and summon him.
  • Jerkass Genie: Unlike other dragons, Black Star Shenron's wishes come with the very costly side-effect of damning the planet the wish was made upon to total destruction if the dragon balls are not returned within a year. And given nobody knew this detail until Pilaf had already made a wish, it's likely that nobody was meant to know how much their wish would cost them.
  • Large and in Charge: Black Star Shenron is so massive that his head alone is the size of Kami's Lookout.
  • The Omnipotent: His capabilities greatly outclass those of his Eternal Dragon brothers. For instance, death wishes do not exceed Black Star Shenron's power.

The Dragon of the Gods summoned by the Super Dragon Balls, and far more powerful than Shenron and Porunga. He is so large that he dwarfs galaxies.
  • Acid-Trip Dimension: The inside of his body is one, filled with planets and stars. The space surrounding his core, however, is pitch-black nothingness.
  • Always a Bigger Fish:
    • Namekian Dragon Balls can recreate an entire planet and its entire population with two wishes. Super Shenron can do both to a long-dead planet with a single wish, and this was implied to be on the low end of possible uses of his power.
    • Ultimately his power matches, and perhaps even exceeds, that of both Omni-Kings, being able to effortlessly restore the universes they erased. This ranks Super Shenron among the most powerful beings in the Dragon Ball franchise.
  • Back from the Dead: While all Eternal Dragons can do this, Super Shenron has no limitations on who he can resurrect and can do so on a seemingly unlimited scale. He's the only known way to bring back someone who's been erased from existence by the Omni-King, while even being erased by a God of Destruction was believed to be permanent.
  • Composite Character: In the English dub by Funimation, the Dragon summoned by the Super Dragon Balls is said to be Zalama himself.
  • Draconic Abomination: He's a being larger than galaxies and is somehow Bigger on the Inside. He also speaks a language incomprehensible to mortals and can grant any wish. He's even implied to be able to make someone be able to take Zeno's place. His appearance is so otherworldly and amazing that the usually stoic Android 17 is in awe of his presence.
  • Fictionary: Similar to Porunga who only grant wishes when spoken in Namekian, Super Shenron only grant wishes in the "language of the gods" (which is Japanese/English spoken backward, depending upon the version) so the only beings that can ask wishes of him are other gods. Unlike Porunga who can speak the universal language, Super Shenron only talks in the language of the gods.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: It is the most powerful dragon seen so far, and it is colored a shining gold.
  • Large and in Charge: The greatest of the Eternal Dragons and larger than galaxies, which look little more than trinkets compared to him. Beerus states that what the characters see is just the 'nucleus', and the real deal is much bigger. He's so large that it's actually physically impossible to speak to him face to face. Instead, those who summon him are harmlessly swallowed and taken to his far smaller core to speak their wishes. His Dragon Balls are also the size of planets. The second time he appears to the main characters, he seems to be able to take a smaller more convenient form (but still absolutely massive by human standards) to appear in the world of Void, which may mean he has the ability to change his size and form when he deems it necessary.
  • Logical Weakness: Due to his size and extreme power, attacking him directly is pointless. However, his status as a Benevolent Genie means he has to grant a wish made by his summoner. This also means he could be forced to wish himself out of existence if asked, which is how Zamasu destroys him in an alternate timeline.
  • Magical Incantation: "Come forth, Dragon of the Gods, and grant my wish, peas and carrots!", spoken in the language of the Gods. Hilariously, the language of the gods has no words for peas and carrots, which ends up being the only common tongue words Super Shenron can understand.
  • Make a Wish: Like the other Dragons, he can do this, but any wish made upon him have no limitations. Unlike Shenron and Porunga though, the summoner only gets one wish, so it must be used wisely.
  • The Omnipotent: Is said, by Champa (a god of destruction), to be able to grant any wish with no limits. But you only get one. One of the most important plot points is that because he has no time limit on his resurrections, he is Jiren's only chance bring back his friends and family in the manga. For example, Beerus was able to use him to restore a planet and population that had been dead for a long time. This is later exceeded by him being able to resurrect people erased from existence by the Zenos - who are supposed to be gone for good, period - though Zeno's ability still supersedes the wish of immortality Future Zamasu made for himself (passed on to Fused and Infinite Zamasu).
  • Reality Warper: Like the other Dragons, although much stronger. Restoring a dead world and its population is literally nothing to him, as is restoring erased universes.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Much like Shenron and Porunga, including the glowing aspect when fulfilling a wish. Unlike them his eyes initially project beams of red light, pouring out in opposite directions from each other like those of a quasar (even seen as one from a distance), though this fades away as he begins to grow into his true size.
  • The Stoic: Compared to Shenron and Porunga, Super Shenron hasn't showcased much of a personality yet in his appearances.
  • Super Prototype: He is the original Eternal Dragon, with the Namekian Dragon Balls (and, indirectly, Earth's) being based on the Super Dragon Balls. He is also much stronger (and much larger) than either Shenron or Porunga, although he can only grant a single wish.

    Toronbo

Toronbo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toronbo.png
The Eternal Dragon of Planet Cereal.
  • Benevolent Genie: He attempts to dissuade Granolah from his wish by explaining the serious downsides, namely that he would sacrifice centuries of his expected lifespan and still rank below the gods of the cosmos. He only grants it after Granolah consents to the terms.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He has an icy blue color scheme, emphasizing his cool, compassionate nature.
  • Breaking Old Trends: His Dragon Balls are only two in total and much smaller than any other Dragon Ball set so far, yet they are far more powerful than most. Unlike Shenron and Porunga who have clear limitations, Toronbo is capable of granting wishes beyond his natural power for a price. When Granolah wishes to become the Strongest in the Universe, he needs to barter centuries of his lifespan in order for it to be granted. Not only that, these Dragon Balls have no waiting period for their next usage.
  • Can't Live Without You: His life is tied to his creator, Monaito.
  • Cast from Lifespan: Toronbo can increase a wisher's power far beyond their potential, but this can only be done at the cost of drastically shortening their lifespan. To his credit he warns Granolah his wish to become the strongest fighter in Universe 7 will not come easy if he goes through with it.
  • Literal Genie: However, as Monaito explains, you can wish to become the strongest in the universe today, but there's no telling who will surpass you tomorrow. Vegeta demonstrates this by growing stronger over the course of his battle with Granolah, and later, Gas becomes the strongest by simple virtue of his brother wishing for it after Granolah made his wish. Not to mention that it only applies to those inside Universe 7, which does not include Freeza, since he became the strongest through training in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber in a different dimension.
  • Reality Warper: Like his brethren, he can magically grant wishes, though his power is greater than that of Shenron and Porunga at a very high price to pay for it.
