    Rocky

Rocky

Played By: Jane Levy

The protagonist. She and her little sister have an abusive mother, and she needs cash to get away. She and her boyfriend, Money, and friend, Alex, turned to burglary so that she could get the cash. They have found a house which will finish their goal, and it seems their last job will be an easy target. It won't.

  • Abusive Parents: Rocky's mother is a real piece of work, being verbally, financially and (when Rocky was younger) physically abusive.
  • Anti-Hero: At the end of the day, she's a burglar even if her motivations are sympathetic.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Demonstrates both the positive and negative sides of this trope. She is willing to do anything to save her little sister from their mother's abuse, even if she has to put herself and her friends at risk repeatedly and let a murderer go free.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father left when she was still a child, leaving her with an abusive mother.
  • Final Girl: A rare case where this is a plot point. After the Blind Man accidentally kills Cindy, he needs another female to carry his child. Rocky outlives her male companions for this reason.
  • Mutually Assured Destruction: The Blind Man and Rocky wind up as the only survivors, but neither can rat each other out without facing imprisonment themselves.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She has a chance to escape, but stops to save Cindy. This act of decency results in Cindy's death and the Blind Man blocking off a potential exit.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: She is only 5'1 but puts up a good fight against the Blind Man who is much older, taller and more muscular.
  • Promoted to Parent: Despite - indeed, because of the fact that their mother is alive and present.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: She got the money to move to California with her sister, but her best friend, boyfriend, and Cindy are dead. Plus the Blind Man won't face any legal repercussions for rape and murder.
  • Storyboard Body: She gets a tattoo of a ladybug on her wrist, because ladybugs hold symbolic significance for her stemming from a traumatic childhood.
  • Tempting Fate: Once she escapes the house, she taunts the Blind Man over his inability to capture her in the open. Then he releases his dog to chase her down.
  • Tomboyish Name: Her full name is Roxanne but she goes by Rocky.

    Alex

Alex

Played By: Dylan Minnette

One of the robbbers. He and his friend Money have been helping Rocky rob houses to get the money she needs to allow her and her sister to escape their mother. The only one of the three with a brain.

  • Dogged Nice Guy: Has feelings for Rocky; too bad All Girls Want Bad Boys.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Alex is more than willing to call in the police for help, knowing that they won't care about a couple of burglars when confronted with kidnapping, rape, and murder. But that would mean that they don't get to keep the money...
  • Made of Iron: Alex survives events throughout the movie that should've realistically killed him, such as Being thrown through a window, falling on and from a skylight, suffering a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown from The Blind Man and only finally dying after being shot at close range.
The Blind Man: "God? There's no God."
Jeremy: "I dunno...have you met Alex?"
  • Nice Guy: Like Money, Alex is helping Rocky because he cares about her. He is not just in it for his own cash. In addition, he is very hesitant to rob a blind old war veteran of the money that was given to him to compensate the loss of his daughter. He is also willing to give up the loot and go to jail if it means having a murderer who has kidnapped a woman to forcefully impregnate her brought to justice.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Not that burglary counts as a good deed, but Alex's attempt to help a friend and her kid sister escape an abusive home results in him being violently murdered and his father's reputation and business being ruined.
    • A double example in that he could have escaped at one point but came back to rescue Rocky. This decision ultimately leads to his death.
  • Only Sane Man: Alex is aware at all times of exactly which laws they're breaking, and how much trouble they could get into, and constantly tries to control his co-conspirator's recklessness in order to minimize both. He's also willing to give up the money in order to call the police for rescue from the incredibly dangerous kidnapper and murderer, but Rocky talks him out of that.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the most moral of the group.

    Money

Money

Played By: Daniel Zovatto

Rocky's boyfriend. He is the most amoral of the group, and is killed by the blind man very quickly.

  • Asshole Victim: He is the most amoral of the group, showing no hesitation to rob an old blind war veteran of the cash that was used to pay him off after his daughter's manslaughter. Ironically, he died as a result of his only sincere Pet the Dog act in the whole movie.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being a jerk crook, he still draws the line at murder, and cannot bring himself to shoot the blind man.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: He gets killed after showing his first, last and only Pet the Dog moment in the whole film after being a jerk during his screen time.
  • Jerkass: He has no morals against robbing a blind war veteran of the money that was his only comfort after his daughter was killed, has a thuggish personality, and is generally unlikable. He is introduced to us by smashing vases and peeing on the floor of a house he and his friends are robbing just to be a dick.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: He is killed instantly after his attempt to save his friends Rocky and Alex. At the time of his death, this was his only sincere Pet the Dog act in the whole movie and he paid for it with his life.
  • Pet the Dog: When the Blind Man asks how many other people are with him, he lies that he's the only one. This was ironically his only one in the entire film and he immediately paid for it with his life.
  • Stupid Crooks: See Too Dumb to Live below.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He is the most amoral of the group.
  • Too Dumb to Live: From the get-go, he acts reckless for the sake of being reckless, breaking household items and pissing on rugs (leaving his DNA as evidence) during what should be a straight-forward break-in. Then he brings a gun when he and his companions break in to the Blind Man's house, which, as Alex points out, would give the Blind Man permission to do whatever he wants to the group. Guess what ends up happening because of that.

    The Blind Man

The Blind Man/Norman Nordstrom

Played By: Stephen Lang

The antagonist. He is a war veteran who lost his sight in battle. He has a large stash of loot in a safe in his house, and the Main Characters try to steal it. Unfortunately for them, he turns out to be far worse than them, and more than they can handle...

  • Actor Allusion: This is not the first time Stephen Lang played a Serial Killer villain. However, in his last outing, he was a Large Ham unlike his character "The Blind Man".
  • The Adjectival Man: He's known largely as "The Blind Man".
  • Alliterative Name: According to Word of God, his name is Norman Nordstrom.
  • Angry Guard Dog: The Blind Man has a big, mean dog.
  • Anti-Villain: For about the first half of the movie it seems like he's just defending his home and his property from a bunch of armed criminals, who started the whole conflict when they broke in to rob him. Subverted when later revelations paint him in a far more sinister light.
  • Beard of Evil: He has a white one.
  • Big Bad: The Blind Man is the main antagonist.
  • Disability Superpower: His lack of vision is counter-balanced by extraordinarily acute senses of hearing, smell and touch and his knowledge of the environment (his own house). Subverted in that being blind is still screwing him over and his sense of hearing isn't exactly the best after a few gunshots.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He had a daughter whom he loved very much and whose death drove him off the deep end.
  • Evil Old Folks: In his sixties and a kidnapper and murderer.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once a decorated war hero.
  • From Camouflage to Criminal: He was a respected war hero and military veteran before becoming a killer.
  • Handicapped Badass: He may be blind but he's still a powerfully built man with years of military experience under his belt as shown when he overpowers Money with no effort.
  • Hollywood Atheist: He goes off on a rant about how accepting that God isn't real permits him to do anything he wants.
  • Implacable Man: It takes a lot to even slow him down. Getting badly beaten, thrown from a height and shot ultimately fails to do him in.
  • Insane Troll Logic: He doesn't consider himself to be a rapist. Since he's forcibly impregnated a woman, he technically is a rapist. He mainly considers himself to not be one because he did not actually force himself upon her and only had sex with her when she "consented"...even though being forced to do so if you ever want to have a chance of being released isn't truly consent.
  • Made of Iron: He can withstand a great deal of punishment.
  • Papa Wolf: He kidnapped the woman who accidentally killed his daughter, and has forcefully impregnated her to get himself a new child. Really dark version. Going by the trailer & synopsis for the sequel, he is a more noble version of this this time around, having adopted a young girl who was orphaned in a fire. We see him training her & when she's kidnapped, he unleashes Hell to get her back.
  • Retired Badass: Despite being a retiree, he's a nigh-unstoppable juggernaut who isn't impaired by his age in the least.
  • Tragic Villain: When it comes down to it, he's just a lonely old man mourning his lost child even if his actions are undeniably monstrous.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He's got white hair, befitting his age, and he's a rapist and murderer.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The Blind Man is just as vicious towards Rocky as he is to Alex or Money.

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Cindy Roberts

Played By: Franciska Töröcsik

  • And I Must Scream: She's unable to communicate or escape, and the Blind Man intended to hold her hostage until she had his child.
  • Asshole Victim: Zigzagged. While she did accidentally kill the Blind Man's daughter while driving drunk and use her family's money to get away with it, she in no way deserved to be kidnapped, held prisoner and forcibly impregnated.
  • Bound and Gagged: In the Blind Man's basement.
