Setsuna Kai

The protagonist of Black Book, he's a boy living on his own alongside his half-brother Nagahisa. His world is stolen out from under him with the sudden appearances of Petit Frosts who kidnaps Nagahisa and hightail it to the Expanse.

  • Big Brother Instinct: He's very protective of his half-brother Nagahisa.
  • Demoted to Extra: If Red Book is being played, then he's just a recurring NPC and doesn't go on to the final encounters.
  • Hero of Another Story: His journey to find Nagahisa still happens in Red Book, it just happens off-screen.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: In the anime, he suffers plenty of Amusing Injuries, including but not limited to: Harmless Electrocution, and a Running Gag where he often falls out of a portal and injures himself.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: He fights Mirai by sheer coincidence, as he was just trying to win the competition at Marble Land to get the White Messiah Horn/Eye, as was Mirai.
  • Physical God: If he decides to kill Hoshigami in the Deity ending, then he becomes a God in her place, dividing the human and demon worlds and reviving those that died.
  • Missing Mom: His mother passed away in the past. He never knew his father and takes care of his brother. He meets her spirit in Sand Land at the grave Lucifer made for her.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: While he is a Hero of Another Story in Red Book, once the paths converge either he or Mirai will be the one leading the charge.

Mirai Kaname

The protagonist of Red Book, she's an orphan who learns from Zett that her father is still alive, and travels to the Expanse in search of him.

  • Action Girl: She's willing to fight back physically against those who mess with her, as a human disguised Ratatoskr learned the hard way.
  • Demoted to Extra: If Black Book is being played, then she's just a recurring NPC and doesn't go on to the final encounters.
  • Hero of Another Story: Her journey to learn about her father still happens in Black Book, it just happens off-screen.
  • Inspector Javert: She gets fed some false information about Setsuna wanting to destroy the expanse early on by the likes of the tyrant Hel, leading to her coming to blows with Dust and Diana, who helped Setsuna escape.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: While she had some mislead Inspector Javert reasons to fight Setsuna, her fighting him was by sheer coincidence, as she was just trying to win the competition at Marble Land to get the White Messiah Eye/Horn, as was Setsuna.
  • Little Miss Badass: She's pretty competent for a girl her age.
  • Luminescent Blush: She gives a bright blush upon falling for a transfer student. She loses her crush when she finds out he's been Dead All Along and a ghost.

Nagahisa Kai

Setsuna's half-brother who is kidnapped early on. He is taken into the Expanse with his brother giving chase. However, there is more to his upbringing than meets the eye.

  • Face–Heel Turn: Once Setsuna finally catches up to him, Nagahisa has learned the truth of his birth as an angel child, putting him at odds with Setsuna.
  • Fantastic Racism: Towards demons and devil Children. His brother being no exception.
  • Hypocrite: He preaches demons are beyond redemption just like his father does, but it was Tyrant Isis that gave him his demon partner Sphinx out of kindness.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: He's much less pleasant to be around once he has done his Face–Heel Turn.

Elegy

The daughter of the false demon lord Azazel who comes to sympathize more with the angels than demons.
  • Non-Action Guy: She doesn't actually fight herself, she's more just along for the ride.

Masaki Kuzuha

The protagonist of White Book, he sets off alongside his friend Takaharu Ougi to the Expanse in order to find a cure for his friend's little sister Shou Ougi and clear accusations of him being cursed.
  • Clear My Name: He is the one immediately accused of putting Shou Ougi into the cursed dark slumber, leading to him deciding to go to the demon world to clear up the situation.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be pretty rude including his best friend Takaharu, but he cares for him deeply.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: He has the powers of both angels and demons while still being a human, making him even more unique than a devil or angel child.




Takaharu Ougi

Masaki's long-time friend, he heads out alongside Masaki to the Expanse in order to find a cure for his little sister Shou.
  • Fusion Dance: One of the options in the endgame is to have him fuse with Hoshigami in order to make her stronger. Thankfully there aren't any major reprecussions for this and Hoshigami restores him good as new.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: The crux of his arc is him trying to overcome his nature as an angel child to obey rules and authority figures who he knows are wrong. Thanks to Masaki saving him from Raguels control and fusing with Hoshigami in the best ending, he gains the will to defy his father and choose Masaki.





Jin

The protagonist of both Light Book and Fire Book, he's an energetic slacker who's very interested in demons. He joins the rebellion in Valhalla.

Akira

The protagonist of both Dark Book and Ice Book, he's a cool-headed boy who assists in the Valhalla rebellion.
Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano

    Minor Characters 

Zett Takajo

A mysterious boy who aides the protagonists of Black, Red, and White books by sending them to the Expanse and giving them advice throughout their journeys.
Voiced by: Motoko Kumai

  • Ambiguously Brown: He's darker skinned than the other human children but is otherwise normal. Of course he's not human at all.
  • Big Good: In Red/Black Book as the one who kickstarted Setsuna and Mirai's journey.
  • Creepy Child: There's something unsettling about his appearance that's likely to put anyone on guard.
  • Decomposite Character: Zebul the Demon Lord is a completely separate being from the sealed dark angel Beelzebu.
  • Mr. Exposition: Tends to give info to help Mirai and Setsuna.
  • The Reveal: He is Zebul, Lucifers equal and ruler of the Deep Hole with his brothers.

Lucifer

The demon king that rules over all realms of Makai and whom even the Tyrants that rule the other lands of Makai obey. He resides in the Dark Palace at Center Makai.

In Red/Black Book he is the Mysterious Voice that constantly rings out to Setsuna and Mirai throughout their journey.


  • Back from the Dead: First in Light/Dark after Jin prevents his death through Time Travel, then along with the rest of demonkind following Gaap and Beelzebus release in Messiah Riser forcibly reviving all the demon souls they had eaten.
  • Big Good: He gives his children the tools they need to stop Armageddon, as well as means to improve the world.
  • Killed Offscreen: In Messiah Riser he's implied to have been sacrificed by the Imperium. His soul took so long to absorb the rest of Center Makai was able to remain safe until Jin and Akira finally arrived.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He's the father of both Setsuna and Mirai.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Jin collects his crimson soul gem from his grave in the Bad Future.

Shou Ougi

Takaharu's sister who is put under a deep sleep, inspiring her brother and Masaki to cure her.

Lena

Jin and Akira's friend who enjoys mysterious things. She aids in the rebellion in Valhalla.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In Light & Dark the boisterous and adventurous Lena is replaced with a more timid girl who wants to leave Valhalla as soon as possible and does not like fighting.
  • Heel–Face Brainwashing: In Fire/Ice book by Isaac and Light & Dark by archangel Enoch.
  • Jumped at the Call: She was happy to jump into adventure and take on threats to other worlds. Unfortunately this attitude had consquences in both Light/Dark and Fire/Ice.
  • Kill the Cutie: She's one of the most idealistic members of the group, but also the first to die. She gets better.
  • Non-Action Guy: She's an otherwise normal girl, so it's no surprise that she isn't all that combative.

Amy Kashihara


  • Driven to Suicide: Lena's death leads to her giving herself up to the Imperium out of despair, resulting in her death. She gets better.
  • Martyr Without a Cause: She develops a self-sacrificing nature after Valhalla is destroyed by Armageddon, joining Mephisto willingly to become the God of a new world made by Shugoshin.

Shin

One of the strongest members of the rebellion who has ties to Lucifer.
  • Light 'em Up: Is attuned to light and has the light holy beast Barong as his demon partner. Though he almost never uses Barong in combat.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He's manipulated by Drail to kill Lucifer. Thankfully, Jin stops this by going back in time.

    Major Antagonists 

Azazel

The fake demon lord and usurper of Lucifer.


  • Back from the Dead: He's revived in the Deep Hole as punishment for his actions and spends the rest of his second life tortured and jailed unless Setsuna or Mirai recruit him.
  • The Heavy: His actions influence most of the game, but he ends up playing second fiddle to his daughter, Nagahisa, and Michael.
  • Heroic Second Wind: A villainous variant. Having been crushed by Setsuna/Mirai he starts to realize he doesn't even remember why he wanted to rule over everything to begin with. Coming to the realization he was just a pawn of destiny, Azazel gains the resolve to fight with his own will and attacks them for a second fight. Upon defeat he finally finds peace, having fought for himself rather than lofty ambitions consumed by fate.
  • Our Zombies Are Different: Became a corpse sometime after Red/Black Book. His soul gem and remains can be used to revive him as a zombie in Dark and Light.

Michael

The archangel king of Tenkai.


  • Big Bad: Of Red/Black Book
  • Decomposite Character: The archangel king created by Hoshigami is a distinct being from the Michael demon species that are robotic and descend from him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After his resurrection following White Book to become a benign king in Fire/Ice Book.

Hoshigami

The goddess of creation and opposite of Jashin.


  • Big Good: She only opposes the chosen devil children in Red and Black because it is necessary for creation, she's otherwise a benign goddess.
  • God Is Good: She is a benevolent all loving creator.
  • Original Generation: Zigzagged. Her name and appearance are not based on an actual figure in mythology. Her role in creation, benevolence, and compassion make her out as a benign Expy of the New Testament God.
  • Red Baron: Known as "God of the Stars".
  • Sealed Good in a Can: She spends most of eternity after the 7 Days she made the universe sleeping in her Eternity Palace. Lucifer and Michael were made to wisely lead demons and angels directly, and mankind indirectly, in her stead.

Raguel

The governor of Tenkai and complete ruler of angelkind following Michael's death in Red/Black Book.


  • Ambition Is Evil: He desires nothing more than the complete dominion of angelkind over humanity and extinction of the demon race.
  • Big Bad: Of White Book.
  • Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: After his defeat he decides to go to Eden to awaken Jashin, the destroyer of life, rather than accept a world where order doesn't have supreme control.

Jashin

The opposite of Hoshigami and the destroyer of life.


  • The Anti-God: The polar opposite of Hoshigami.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: She views life as meaningless, without purpose, and too chaotic to exist. Life itself fills her with an intense hatred and desire to destroy it all to return reality back to its original formless void.
  • Final Boss: Of White Book.

Dark/Light Imperius

The tyrannical rulers of Valhalla who seek to conquer all worlds. Dark Imperius is resurrected in Puzzle de Call! and seek revenge against both.

Their true names are revealed in the Light & Dark anime and Puzzle de Call! as Azrael (Dark) and Remiel (Light).


  • Big Bad: Of Dark/Light Version, Light & Dark, and Dark Imperius in Puzzle de call!
  • Decomposite Character: Remiel and the Grigori Remiel are separate angels. The other Remiel appears in Fire/Ice as a servant of Enoch.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Both are angels, but appear as blue/yellow skinned men clad in armor.

Seipher and Quazir

The negative manifestations of the powers of light and dark born from Valhall'a creation and the power behind both Imperius.


Isaac & Mephisto

The right hands of Flame and Ice Apostles who have lead the forces of Muspellheim and Niflheim against each other since their worlds beginning.


  • Arch-Enemy: They are each others worst enemy. Both are trying to fulfill destiny sooner than the other for their world's side. The two become this over time to Akira and Jin as they antagonize them.
  • De-power: They can drain the power of Jin, Akira, and their demon partners through their power over Fire/Ice. Their levels are then brought back to level one. The two devil childs don't give them the chance to pull it off again before their last battle.
  • The Dragon: Isaac to Flame Apostle and Mephisto to Ice Apostle.

Flame and Ice Apostle

The Gods of Muspellheim and Niflheim after they fell for Shugoshins goals. Both seek the prosperity of their world and its people, eternally fighting each other and attempting to drag all worlds into their conflict as part of Shugoshin's destiny.


  • Ambiguously Brown: Flame Apostle, like the elves he created to live alongside demons, are dark skinned to go from living under an intense sun in a hot world filled with sand.
  • Anti-Villain: They truly don't have any malicious intent unlike their military commanders and right hand men, but they have no choice except to follow the destiny proclaimed by Shugoshin for eternal conflict.
  • Back from the Dead: They revive all of their lieutenants soon after death to continue the fight and protect their lands.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After they reveal Shugoshins real intent they ask Jin/Akira to recruit their lieutenants before dying, whom they have all revived to continue fighting. After they are all collected the two will revive in their castles, where they join Jin and Akira.
  • An Ice Person: Ice Apostle.
  • Knight Templar: Flame Apostle is the more templarish of the two as he seeks to protect and ensure his worlds prosperity to a fervent degree. His defeat softens him up.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Flame Apostle and the non-elf residents of Muspellheim are angels. His most trusted lieutenants even have Holy Halo made of fire behind them.
  • Playing with Fire: Flame Apostle.

Shugoshin (Secundus and Zosma)

The deity who oversees the eternal conflict of Muspellheim and Niflheim from the Ginunngagaap. He is the true villain of the story.


  • Grandpa God: Resembles one before going One-Winged Angel.
  • One-Winged Angel: Both transform into a monstrous figure with three heads (Demonic, Main Head, Angelic) that each have their own HP bar.
  • Reincarnation: Both Secundus and Zosma imply they are the reincarnations of Seifer and Quazir, having used their powers to travel back in time and create more worlds for their new scheme.

Scathach and Pazuzu

The co-leaders of the Imperium following fellow co leader Shuten-doji's defection, both seek to only release the sealed angel they pledge themselves too. Depending on Jin/Akira's route one will have sacrificed the other and face the devil child in their new HQ: Dark Palace.


  • Co-Dragons: They both act as this as the main leaders of the restored Imperium, but are also a singular The Dragon due to plotting to release a different master from the same seal.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Their reward for all their hard work in releasing a powerful ancient angel that eats demon souls for power is...to be eaten by an ancient powerful angel that consumes demon souls for power.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Pazuzu convinces Rand to offer his soul as Jin refused to use the four crystals to release Beelzebu, noting that the soul eating is incomplete due to his master being sealed away. Thus possible to save all the demons consumed before their release. Jin then is forced to release Gaap and by proxy his demon partner.
  • Sadistic Choice: Both Scathach and Pazuzu force Akira (Against Gale's will) and Jin (Rand forcing Jin to release his kind) into releasing their master after sacrificing said demon partner.

Gaap and Beelzebu

The holy and dark angels sealed away by the messiah devil child using Messiah Riser. Through their minions they plot to be released from their seal and bring order to the universe.


  • Our Angels Are Different: Both are legless floating figures with no face (Gaap) and a glowing eye or a blue and white prettyboy (Beelzebu). Each having numerous wings across their form and the main ones are part of their arms.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Unfortunately the can doesn't stop them from eating or reviving demons.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: They devour demon souls with reckless abandon. Even when sealed they consume demon souls just by forcing their influence in an area. Only when they are freed does the soul become a part of them and then powers them up.
