The Daughters

    As a Whole

  • Action Girl:
  • Determinator: No matter how dark things get, the girls will always get up and do their best to save the day.
  • Dude Magnet: Each girl has some sort of romantic involvement with at least 2 or more guys throughout the series.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: At least until Tianna joins the team:
    • Vanessa is the pretty one.
    • Catty is the Ditz.
    • Jimena is the tomboy.
    • Serena is the Team Mom.
  • Girly Bruiser: The girls know how to kick follower ass, but usually get dressed up to do so and they all have stereotypically girly interests, such as fashion, makeup, and dating.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: The girls usually like to get decked out before any big fights, so that they resemble actual goddesses.
  • Magical Girl Warrior: The girls are all a rare early western example.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: All of the daughters (sans Serena) are members of their school's soccer team.
  • The Power of Friendship

    Vanessa Cleveland

"I just wish I could be like everyone else."
A popular high-achiever who lives an ordinary life- or at least that's what everybody thinks. Secretly, Vanessa has the ability to turn invisible and wishes for nothing more than to be normal. However, she soon learns that she is a daughter of the moon whose duty is to fight the Atrox and it's followers.

  • Extreme Doormat: Can come off as this due to her desire to have everyone like her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Is the only blonde daughter.
  • Morality Pet: To Stanton after her act of kindness towards him.
  • Refusal of the Call: When she first learns about the daughters, Vanessa initially believes that Serena, Jimena, and Maggie are playing a cruel prank on her, until she sees that they are all dead serious. She ends up running out and saying that it's all untrue, but after she calms down a bit, comes to believe them.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Catty's tomboy.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Mainly in The Final Eclipse
What little self-esteem she had left was gone now. She supposed that was the power of evil. It could steal your confidence and your belief in yourself, suck everything from you, until you felt unsure and too afraid to fight back.

    Serena Killingsworth

"There never was a night that didn't end."
A new girl at La Brea High who has a quirky sense of style and is rumored to see the future with her tarot cards. Serena is soon revealed to be a daughter of the moon with the ability to read minds, and has been working with Jimena and Maggie against the Atrox for awhile. Due to her power's similarity to that of the followers, Serena is known as the Key, the one who will shift the power to either the side of light or dark.

  • The Ace: Plays the cello, is a skilled cook, writes poetry, reads tarot cards as a side business, and takes classes at UCLA along with her high school courses.
  • Quirky Curls: Is described as having "bobby-pin" curls.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Zig Zagged. Her style is described as this but from the outfits described in-story, her style seems to vary from normal-but-trendy for the early 2000s, to punkish, to vaguely gothy.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Only for Goddess of the Night. Her hair after that is black with red tips.
  • Tarot Cards: Owns a deck that she can use to see small glimpses into the future. She also has a small side business where she charges $20 for a reading.
  • Team Chef: Her cooking is known for being quite good. She actually mentions that she'd considered being a chef when she was younger, but gave up on the idea due to her goddess duties.
  • Those Two Guys: With Jimena

    Jimena Castillo

"They're messing with the wrong homegirl when they mess with me."
A former gangbanger who learned about her destiny as a Daughter about the same time as Serena, a few years before the series began. Although she's clean now, her reputation is so legendary, rival gangsters are still afraid to approach her. Alongside her street skills, she has the ability to receive premonitions so she can see brief glimpses into the future. While's she happy to be free from her past and enjoy her time as a Daughter with her friends, a secret from her past may change that, alongside a new destiny nobody saw coming...

  • Anger Born of Worry: Tends to be angry at people when she's worried about them.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She's an ex-gangster who's lost her parents, her boyfriend, has seen her friends struck down by shootings, once tried to kill someone out of revenge, and has served time in Youth Authority Camp. No wonder she's so eager to embrace her current life and move on.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Outside of being a daughter, she's an ex-gangster with a legendary reputation that still holds up.
  • Gangbangers: What she used to be.
  • The Lost Lenore: Veto
  • Past-Life Memories: She starts to gain these after her seventeenth birthday, which leads her to discover that she is Pandia's reincarnation and the new mentor to the Daughters.
  • Storyboard Body: Her tattoos all represent different moments from her gang days.
  • Those Two Guys: With Serena

"You can't stop the future from coming, so worrying about it won't change anything."
An artistic, troublemaking slacker who is introduced as Vanessa's best friend, who has the ability to travel through time. She is much more at ease with her powers though, and (due to her adoptive mother's theories) believes that they are alien in origin. She soon learns that she is a daughter of the moon instead, and discovers that she has more ties to the dark side than she'd like to be comfortable with...

    Tiana Moore

"You created me to destroy. Now I have fulfilled my destiny."
A mysterious girl who wakes up one morning without any idea who or where she is, but quickly discovers that she is being stalked by two followers that want her dead. After several encounters with the daughters, Tianna learns that she has telekinesis and is granted the title of a daughter by Selene after she helps the others rescue Catty. Although she hopes to settle down in a normal life with her foster family and friends, she eventually learns that maybe her fate was decided for her long ago...

some caption text
The mentor to the Daughters. She's introduced as a retired history teacher, but is actually over two thousand years old and was a teenager in ancient Greece when she discovered her destiny was to lead the Daughters of the Moon over the next couple millennia. And while she's been a great mentor and does a fantastic job teaching each and every one of the Daughters she meets, she still has some dark secrets of her own...

Enemies

    The Atrox

    The Followers
The Atrox's minions, they serve as a way to spread its influence across the Earth by stealing the hope of innocent people. They have powers of their own, such as mind-reading and shadow-flight. While there are many, the series focuses on a few particular Followers that go out of their way to antagonize the Daughters.
  • Mooks: While some stand out more than other, many go unnamed. Whenever there's a big fight, it's usually the daughters versus a large crowd of followers.
  • Oh, Crap!: Whenever it becomes obvious that the current conflict is going in the Daughter's favor, the followers usually turn tail and flee.
  • Standard Evil Empire Hierarchy: While the followers already tend to be low in terms of the Atrox's forces, there's two ranks to them. First, there are Initiates, those whose hope has just been stolen and want to prove themselves to the Atrox. After performing a feat that pleases the Atrox, they are allowed to step into the cold fire and truly become a Follower.
  • Starter Villain: Early in the series, the main threats were from followers but as the books went on, they gave way to more serious villains.
  • Un-person: Followers who lose favor with the Atrox and are turned back into normal humans seem to receive this treatment from the others.

    Adamantis
A high-ranking member of the Inner Circle and Catty's father. He managed to take advantage of a Daughter named Zoe Reese who was frightened about her seventeenth birthday, and seduce her into joining the Atrox. After Catty was born, Zoe realized her mistake and managed to hide Catty away from him. He decides to bide his time and wait for Catty to come of age, knowing that she can never truly deny her dark heritage.
