Roar into space! Our music!
A unit formed by Michiru Kaibara, the top DJ of her generation. They consist of Michiru as DJ, and Lumina, Kokoa and Hayate as vocalists.
    General
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Is this to the rest of the cast, being the only unit formed of first-year members.
  • Color-Coded Characters: The unit is associated as a group with neon green.
    • Michiru: Pink
    • Lumina: Yellow
    • Kokoa: Pastel Pink
    • Hayate: Lavender
  • Cosmic Motifs: The group's theme is based around outer space.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
  • Graceful Loser: They accept conceding to Abyssmare at their showdown at Yoba Academy. Justified, as the entire point of challenging them wasn't to beat them so much as save Neo from a severe bout of depression following her breakdown at D4FES. USA and Abyssmare's subsequent catastrophic performance.
  • Official Couple: Kokoa and Hayate, who had been dating since before the formation of the unit. They are the only major characters in the franchise that are confirmed to be dating anyone.
  • Secret-Keeper: Michiru, Hayate, and Kokoa are this for Lumina, upholding the cover story that Lumina is a human-acted VTuber rather than an A.I. When Weronika and Elsie try to ask Hayate and Kokoa about Lumina's identity, they just claim that she's very busy and prefers to work remotely. Lumina does eventually reveal her identity to Abyssmare, but they express no interest in exposing her nature as an A.I. to the world, due to seeing her as a surrogate sister to Neo.

    Michiru Kaibara

Michiru Kaibara

"Doesn't matter how good, how bad, or how old you are if you're having fun!"
Middle school appearance
Voiced by: Kotori Koiwai (Japanese)

The DJ of UniChØrd. Michiru is well-versed in pop culture knowledge, and her specialty is remixing songs using her self-created vocal software. She previously performed as a solo DJ at anisong club events, and her performances garnered her many fans. Now in high school, she remains the #1 DJ of her generation as a result of her talent. Her encounter with new friends helps her mature faster. She is the niece of Haruki Kaibara, a former member of the disbanded DJ unit L.M.O.

  • The Ace: Not only was she already a highly skilled DJ in her pre-teen years, but she's introduced as performing at D4FES as a solo unit, when every other known act there has multiple members. Though she loses to Happy Around!, she still ends up gathering a considerable fanbase.
  • Ascended Extra: Originally a side character in the other units' story, who is now the leader of her own unit in the game.
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: She seems to nearly get drunk on the praise and be extremely self-assured in public, but when she's alone we see she's highly critical of herself and her performances and doesn't rest on her laurels, constantly striving to improve and being frustrated when things don't turn out as she wishes.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: While her specialty is listed as "remembering faces", she has no idea who Hayate and Kokoa are after competing with them onstage. Kokoa is not happy about it, to say the least.
  • Child Prodigy: She's been DJing since as early as nine years old, and already knew various techniques and jargon at the time.
  • The Gadfly: Delights in teasing and goading the others in her unit, specifically Kokoa.
  • Insufferable Genius: As an accomplished DJ already in her preteens, she had difficulty getting along with and retaining friends because what she considers to be pretty basic DJ techniques are too complex for them to understand.
  • Verbal Tic: She's known for her extremely dorky-sounding laugh that she inserts into her speech in nearly every context.

    Lumina Ichihoshi (unmarked spoilers)

Lumina Ichihoshi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichihoshi_lumina.jpeg
"A first magnitude star shining in the galaxy, Lumina Ichihoshi!"
Voiced by: Karin Takahashi (Japanese)

A virtual singer who suddenly emerged on the internet and quickly amassed a huge number of subscribers. Calling herself as a "space idol", she does a variety of activities online, from streaming video games to posting original music. To become the number one diva in the galaxy, she proposes forming a unit with Michiru, Kokoa and Hayate.

Although presented as if she was a Virtual YouTuber with a human actor at first, she later reveals herself to be an Artificial Intelligence.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Inverted towards Neo after the events of side:nova.
  • Benevolent A.I.: She's an AI who simply wants to bring her brand of music to the world. Although she does have a few moments where she displays Lack of Empathy for her colleagues and tries to force a Training from Hell regime on them so that they can win D4FES., she does get over that and gets on the level afterwards, even telling Manipulative Bastard producer Sho Mitsuhashi that she's not interested in being used by him. The prime directive that she lost and later restored goes deeper: She was told by Neo's late father to reach out to Neo and apologize on his behalf (as he was dying and realized his mistakes too late) for him pushing her too hard and leaving her for not being the kind of singer he wanted her to be.
  • Chekhov's Skill: When she reveals that she's an AI, she proves it by having individual conversations with Michiru, Hayate, and Kokoa at the same time. She later uses this at the end of the side:nova arc to speak with Abyssmare and break Neo out of her severe depression and save Abyssmare's half of the show, while still performing with the human members of UniChØrd at the same time.
  • Decon-Recon Switch: Of the Virtual Celebrity. As it turns out, an AI idol collaborating with humans has its fair share of problems, such as said AI idol not understanding human needs and desires and putting them through a hardass training schedule as a result. This is something she changes over time thanks to AI deep-learning technology, and becomes capable of feeling genuine emotion and seeing her unit-mates as friends rather than as just tools.
  • Deuteragonist: While Michiru and Neo are stated to be the main protagonists of side:nova, Lumina plays a very important role in the story. She's especially important to Neo's character arc, since she was based on Neo's mother.
  • Evil Twin: She has a prototype lookalike that goes around committing acts of malice, such as disrupting various lives and putting Neo into a coma that necessitates hospitalization.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: In Groovy Mix, most characters' Navigation card lines usually have an implied buffer against the fourth wall since those characters are flesh-and-blood human beings. Lumina is instead an AI, so her lines come off as her being inside your phone/tablet. Her "you haven't logged in in 24 hours" line has her threatening to peek into your search history.
  • Lack of Empathy: Her main flaw early on is that she is unable to empathize with others, specifically humans, due to being an AI that's programmed solely to be a Virtual Celebrity. For example, in order to win at D4FES's U.S. iteration, she devises a Training from Hell program that would force the other three to skip school, much to their protest, and Hayate is barred from trying to write a new song in time for D4FES, which causes her to leave in disgust. Rather than trying to negotiate a more reasonable program, she instead modifies the unit's training program to be even harsher, with the same goal of winning D4FES, and prepares a training plan for Hayate if she chooses to return, which disgusts Kokoa into leaving as well. Lumina is perfectly suited for solo projects (like streaming her own content 24 hours a day without breaking a sweat), but her utter inability to understand the needs and desires of human beings who don't have the luxury of being The Needless makes her very difficult to work with on collboration projects.
Kokoa: You are right in theory. But our feelings don't just work based on theory.
Lumina: Uh-huh, I see. I should have included that in my calculations.
Kokoa: There you go again with your calculations...I wish I could meet the moron who created you!
    • That said, this is something she does work on over time after she reconciles with the rest of the unit, and soon learns to realize the importance of friendship and bonds in a music group. When Sho approaches UniChØrd with the intention of becoming their producer for his own personal gain (after his attempt at producing Abyssmare failed), she basically tells him to get lost.
Sho: Plays may have changed, yet I remain fortunate. I found you, Lumina. You will be better than Neo. The fudning allocated to Abyssmare, all yours. Let's expedite things. Use Neo and Abyssmare as scapegoats and stepping stones to further...
Lumina: You lose one hundred Lumina points!
      Sho: What?!
Lumina: I let you blather, and off the mask came. You lack respect for the artist. To you, there are mere tools to satisfy your sad needs.
Sho: Perhaps I did overshare, yet you need context. All of those things were part of Neo's contract. She, too, saw me only as a means to an end.
Lumina: You're not what I need. Friends, allies, ones to share joy and laughter are what I need. Those are the things you really abandoned, Sho.
  • Me's a Crowd: As an AI, she's capable of being omnipresent. When she reveals her true nature as an AI, she demonstrates by having multiple, distinct conversations with each of her unitmates. Much later, she talks Neo out of her funk while she's still performing with her unit.
  • The Needless: As an AI, she has no need to eat, sleep, or mentally recuperate, and as such she's able to do things like 24-hour livestreams.
  • Regained Memories Sequence: While performing on stage in the final chapter of the side:nova arc, she suddenly fully recovers her memories, including an important directive from Neo's dying father: To reach out to Neo and tell her that he's sorry for putting her through Training from Hell, that he realized too late that he had ruined her life by abandoning her for not living up to his standards. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm had damaged Lumina's hardware and reverted her to an older, selfish version of herself, and so she could not carry out this task until this moment when it all came back to her.
  • The Reveal: In the event story "side:nova Season 4 -Finding Neo-", she reveals herself to be an Artificial Intelligence, and demonstrates by having multiple conversations with multiple individuals at the same time as well as being able to solve difficult mathematics problems instantly.
  • Reverse Psychology: The door to her streaming studio has a "Keep Out" sign, which the other three members heed at first. Later when those three enter during a power outage, they discover an empty bedroom. As the power comes back on, Lumina reveals that she had intended for them to one day open the door and unveils her true identity: She's actually an AI program!
  • Ridiculously Human Robots: She's surprisingly emotive and behaves in such a way that she's indistinguishable from human. UniChØrd's human members and Abyssmare are unaware she's even an A.I. until she spills the secret herself; as far as everyone else knows, she's a human Virtual YouTuber who invoked doesn't show her real self to the public and they don't question that.
  • Secret Identity:
    • As a Virtual YouTuber, the question of who her actor is pops up a few times. As it turns out, her secret identity is the fact that she is not a real human being, but an Artificial Intelligence. She entrusts this info to the rest of UniChØrd, who take care not to let her nature as an A.I. slip out, instead running with the VTuber cover story.
    • This starts to go away in later chapters, however:
      • In the final season of "side:nova", where she reveals her A.I. nature to Abyssmare in order to save Neo from the Despair Event Horizon; as she did not tell Abyssmare to keep it a secret, whether her nature as an A.I. is still a secret from the rest of the world remains unknown.note
      • Then in the "Voice of the Goddess -sing to you-" event story, Michiru straight up blabs to Airi that Lumina is an A.I.
  • Virtual Celebrity: She's presented like she's a Virtual YouTuber, with a studio that others are forbidden from entering (which Michiru assumes to be where her human actor conducts her activities), but it turns out she's an A.I.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's nearly impossible to talk about her in-depth without having to bring up The Reveal that she's an A.I.

    Kokoa Shinomiya

Kokoa Shinomiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinomiya_kokoa.jpeg
Voiced by: Akari Yura (Japanese)

A first year student at Arisugawa Academy and an honour student befitting of the school, though some say she has two sides. In junior high school, she formed a two-person unit with Hayate, and their relationship progressed to the point that they are now a couple. She becomes conflicted when asked to join a four-person unit, and is somewhat envious of Michiru.

  • Arc Symbol: Heart shapes appear as her motif in nearly everything, most notably on her clothing. Very fitting, as her name contains the characters for "heart" and "love".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Is outwardly polite to her rivals, but rants about how much she hates them and wants to crush them into the ground the moment she's behind closed doors.
  • Blunt "No": This is her answer when Lumina suggests HayaCoco and Michiru join her to become a unit.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother has passed away, which is implied to be the reasoning for Kokoa's stubbornness and desire to stay a duo act with Hayate, where she feels she can truly express herself and her feelings through her music.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Tends to come off this way, being very defensive and harsh towards her unitmates, along with being incredibly stubborn, but she has her heart in the right place and shows it when it matters.
  • Tsundere: To Hayate, and a platonic version to the others in the unit. This is lampshaded in the 4-panel comics.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Played with. An in-universe example where Kokoa is upset when Lumina and Michiru take her music and remix it because it removes her own sound and feelings from it. She feels that her original song becomes muddled. However, she can't deny that they're very good at what they do— she just doesn't personally appreciate it as she views her music as an extension of herself.

    Hayate Tendo

Hayate Tendo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tendo_hayate.jpeg
"Make sure you don't miss our true efforts."
Voiced by: Yuuki Tenma (Japanese)

A first year student at Arisugawa Academy, and the cousin of Call of Artemis member Toka Takao. In junior high school, she heard a song by Kokoa and was inspired to write her first poem, sparking her talent for writing lyrics. Although she seems to do things at her own pace, she is very observant and sometimes says things that strike to the heart of the matter. She is in a relationship with Kokoa.

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: While her appearance gives her the aura of someone who is mature and collected, she often says extremely nonsensical things at odd times.
  • Younger Than They Look: She may look mature, but she is the same age as Kokoa and Michiru. Nagisa mistook her for a college student on their first meeting.
