Anastasia Boheart — Magical Girl Solid Core — Nepgear
Life had been a tale of ups and downs for 15-year-old Anastasia Boheart. Losing her father from fighting the Unified Darkness at a young age, her mother turned abusive. Her light in the darkness was her older sister, Sega, who protected her from her mother as much as possible, before getting a job and custody of Anastasia, while her mother killed herself. But before long, Sega and Anastasia settled down, and life was good.
Then her sister, and everyone else she knew, was killed and/or eaten by a giant monster, triggering her awakening as Magical Girl Solid Core. Can she survive long enough to make a difference, and carve out a new life for herself once again?
- Big Sister Worship: Nepgear greatly loves and admires her big sister, with her death devastating her.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Nepgear, at least at first. She eventually embraced it.
- Hormone-Addled Teenager: Downplayed. While normally not focused on such things, put her in a provocative or suggestive situation, and her mind immediately crashes into the gutter.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Her sister, Sega, served as one, despite her best efforts to introduce other people into her life. After Sega's death, she latches onto everyone she meets emotionally to cope.
- Made of Magic: Her "normal" body is composed of magic that mimics that of a human body to the point that it appears identical, which reconfigures itself when she transforms.
- Mage Marksman: She prefers to shoot at targets at long-range, or bombard them with spells.
- Magic Knight: Is skilled at melee combat and magic both.
- Metal Slime: Has incredibly strong defenses, moderate to high HP, and moderate to high speed. Oh, and drops a Sword upon death.
- Military Mage: A relatively low-ranking member of Earth's military. She herself fulfils every role but Military Intelligence and Mook Maker.
- Mix-and-Match Weapon: Her weapon, much like her source material in HDD mode, is a giant gunsword. Unlike her original, she uses the gun function primarily, with the blade functioning as an oversized bayonet.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Normally called Nepgear.
- Person of Mass Destruction: Can and has wiped out entire companies with a single spell, and entire battalions within seconds.
- Red Baron: In addition to her normal nickname, she's earned the title of "Localized Genocide."
- Walking Disaster Area: One that has been acknowledge in-universe. It's joked that if she left the base to buy something, she'd run into the Dark Lord shopping.
Team Gear
A group under the nominal leadership of Anastasia, originally composed of 5 soldiers assigned to her by Counter Force, membership has changed over time.
James Robert
Born in a small town in Kansas, he joined Counter Force after a Dark Lord attacked his town on the day he graduated.
- Ambiguously Human: Has an ability called "'Merely' Human", which allows him to dodge and counter attacks he realistically should not be able to. He stood up against Goddess Grey, a Magical Girl almost on the level of a god, and the only damage he took was strain on his body from countering her attacks.
Jessica Robert
James' sister. She joined Counter Force with her brother after being inspired by a local Magical Girl, and killing one of the demons attacking the town with a spoon while at her boyfriend's house.
- Ambiguously Human: Has an ability called "Barely Human", which renders her far more resistant to damage then is normal for a human.
- Killed Off for Real: Was killed by Goddess Grey on her attack of the North American Central Base.
Michael Rodriguez
The playboy soldier, joined up to be a hero, stayed because it was worthwhile.
- Casanova Wannabe: His attempts to woo women have all ended up being shot down in flames.
- Lady Killer In Love: Revealed that he developed feelings for the previous Gabriel.
- Love Hurts: The previous Gabriel basically forced him into the portal and safety, while she stayed behind until it closed.
Richard Nixon
A man who had the misfortune of not only sharing the name of the disgraced USA President, but looking like him too.
- Celebrity Resemblance: With Richard Nixon, his unfortunate name sake.
- Killed Off for Real: Killed by Goddess Grey.
Samael Balier
The team's resident Mage, who awakened his powers through an embarrassing incident involving a disguised succubus, doppelgänger and a love potion while in high school.
- Power Copying: His unique magic is eventually revealed to be the ability to absorb magic from Magical Girls, granting him spells based on their Affinities.
Gabriel
The newest member of Team GEAR, a young War Angel who was attached to Team GEAR for experience in combat and working with others.
- Cute Giant: 9 feet tall, and very cute.
- Inadequate Inheritor: Something she feared, considering the previous Gabriel's legendary status.
- Legacy Character: Of the previous Gabriel.
- Motor Mouth: Is very talkative when nervous.
Unified Light
- Clap Your Hands If You Believe: New angels are born from prayers.
Counter Force
Their military of the Akashic Pillar, known as the Counter Force, is considered to be the ultimate in unstoppable forces. While it is acknowledged that alone a single Counter Force foot soldier is barely above average in the war, Akasha is capable of fielding them in the millions. And their scientific technology, when backed by their growing understanding of Magic, makes their mechanized forces equal to nearly anything else in the Local Dimension Cluster.Rogue Mason — Commander Mason
Rei Mitsubishi — Magical Girl Goddess Gold
The strongest Magical Girl in existence, oldest sister of the Goddesses, and Nepgears Mentor/Owner/Surrogate Big Sister.
- Person of Mass Destruction: She has to hold back while using her strongest attack, or she could wipe-out an entire continent.
- World's Strongest Man: She's the strongest Magical Girl in the world.
Magical Girl Truth
A Magical Girl of average strength, but (in)famous for two things: her love of training soldiers, and possessing an aura that forces anything inside of it to tell the truth.
- Cannot Tell a Lie: Due to her aura affecting herself, which can get awkward.
- Truth Serum: Her aura forces anything inside of it to tell the truth.
Elizabeth Washington — Magical Girl Carnage — Army Killer
A Magical Girl of above average strength, and incredibly popular for three things: her beauty, her love of battle and her near-invicibility against numerous foes.
- An Arm and a Leg: Loses her left arm fighting Goddess Grey.
- Nigh-Invulnerable: While intercepting something, she cannot be hurt.
Unified Darkness
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Greater Nightmares are born from the deepest desires of their host, and are specifically tailored to those desires... but they're always twisted in some slight way that ruins them entirely.
- Expy: Of various horror industry monsters, with the abilities to match. Or at least what was stated to be the Lesser Nightmares are.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: Finding out that your very existence is why your creator/mother/friend/whatever is suffering (or worse) doesn't do nice things for your mental state.
- Humans Are Bastards: Completely by accident actually. The reason the Nightmare Children are so diverse is because of our Horror industry.
- Theory of Narrative Causality: The main reason why they're so effectivenote and why Humanity is their hard counternote . It's because they're essentially genre conventions of antagonists, and humanity are the protagonists.
Unaligned Front
A general category rather then a unified alliance, there are numerous groups that have no interest in the ongoing war between the Unified Light and Unified Darkness. This ranges from small, weak groups who have no connection to the war, to incredibly powerful beings for who the war is beneath their notice. Defectors from both sides of the war joining the Unaligned Front is not uncommon, either.
In general, these groups are uninvolved in the war, barring aligned or conflicting interests or deals.
Gaia
The Consciousness of the Earth itself. Has a good relationship with humanity, and is working towards her own goals.
- Gaia's Vengeance: Subverted and Inverted. Humanity was rather worried about her being angry at them originally for all the pollution, only to discover that she likes humanity. In fact, it's quite the opposite: Humanity is Gaia's Vengeance.
- Genius Loci: Is the very Earth itself.
- Pop-Cultured Badass: Immensely powerful, near unbeatable, and has a liking for modern entertainment, with Warhammer 40,000 being given as an example.
