Humans

     Ash

Ash

“Anythin’ you lose by bein’ honest ain’t worth keepin’.”

Ash is a rude, green little weirdo with no last name and no friends or family. They're a draft dodger on the run from the human military that seeks to turn them into a weapon. They've got very little respect for authority, but this gives them a soft spot for the underdog. They ended up on the Concord by accident, while running from the law.

Tropes:

  • Face on a Milk Carton: Shortly after Indy finds them, their wanted poster pops up.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: They have plant powers. They’re green. And they have a wooden leg. You do the math.
  • Power Stereotype Flip: Ash might have nature powers, but they’re not remotely nurturing.
  • You Didn't Ask: Ash saw an Orno slip a suspicious package aboard the Concord and didn't bring it up until there was other proof that Cora didn't cause the crash.
  • Had to Be Sharp: They’ve been on the run from the government since they were a kid, giving them a lot of useful survival and stealth abilities (and making them totally rude and a little awkward).
  • Plant Person: Does what it says on the tin. They’ve regrown lost limbs, made leaf-shields, and brewed truly homemade cups of tea.

     Cora

Cora Calypté

"Nice try. I'm ace."

The pragmatic, exhausted de-facto leader of the survivors of the HSV Concord. As a metahuman, she was drafted into military service, but was granted leave to work as a diplomat on the mission - and is secretly a bit of a nerd and a fan of what little Orno pop culture makes its way to Earth.

Tropes:

  • Blessed with Suck: Sure, she's got firepower. But it's only really good for fighting, people think she's dangerous, and it got her drafted.

  • Fiery Stoic: Her lava powers are kept well under control, despite others unnecessary vigilance about it.

  • Had to Be Sharp: Undergoing military training from a young age made her a capable soldier who is afraid to relax.

  • The Lancer: Cora's natural leadership ability and tendency to suppress her feelings are a solid foil for Ketier's over-emotional inaction.

  • Magma Man: Her body can generate lava.

  • Only Sane Man: While the others are caught up in their drama, Cora is often the down-to-earth "straight-man" (badum-tss) who's actually focused on surviving.

  • Power Stereotype Flip: Cora is exceedingly careful and practical - not remotely hot-headed.

  • Team Dad: She's methodical, managing crises and uniting people when Ketier can't.

     Indy

Independence Li

“There’s nothing wrong with a little fun! We’ll trade off on monster duty.”

The bubbly diplomat and tech expert of the group. She has no metahuman abilities, but an unflinching ability to look on the bright side (even when there isn’t one). Strong advocate of the Power of Friendship.

Tropes:

  • Break the Cutie: Indy takes the difficulties - and the deaths - of the Concord crash in stride for a long time, but not forever. When she breaks, she breaks. And calls the villain for help.

  • Horrible Judge of Character: Indy asks for help from Netza as soon as she’s able to communicate with someone off-planet.

     Chised

Chise’khiid “Chised” siq Khiika'lani ix Khun'saal sund Zele'kha vol Ihksaes Paradena

”How did a human like you end up on a planet like this?”
The beefy and beautiful courtesan in Ketier’s royal entourage, Chised supports xeir friends through a particularly adorable brand of tough love. Like all paradena, xeir common name is more of a stage name.

Tropes:

  • The Heart: In the Five-Man Band, Chised's the cute, lovable, emotionally stable one.
  • The Shrink: Xeir official job is to take care of Ketier’s heart, and those of xeir entourage. Xe mostly employs flirtation and espionage to accomplish this, but hey, whatever works.
  • Team Mom: Xeir work revolves around keeping everyone sane and functional, whether that's by blackmailing Malkut into taking some time off from brooding or setting people up to have the right talks with each other.

     Chokma

Chokma Pienah’tet

”It is my ‘job’ to do … anything that doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the other staff.”

Ketier’s quiet, exasperated, highly capable servant. Legally, they’re two halves of the same person - which has put considerable restrictions on Chokma, though xe’s not upset that xe’s not the one in the spotlight.

  • Battle Butler: Xe’s usually quiet and non confrontational. But xe busted out some serious moves in chapter 9, protecting the cast from a Total Party Kill assassination attempt.
  • The Big Guy: Though you wouldn’t notice on first glance, Chokma has been nearly the sole driving force keeping Ketier alive. Besides dumb luck.
  • Hidden Depths: Chokma’s fighting ability suggests that xe’s more than a timid servant.
  • The Quiet One: Chokma is not legally allowed to speak to anyone without Ketier’s permission. Happily, Ketier breaks hundreds of years of tradition breezily and just tells xem to talk to whoever xe wants.

     Ketier

Ketier'en siq Netza'hetizal ix Tarraihk sund Pienya vol Ihksaes Taelrhain

Ketier is the delicate heir to the throne of Potanikyaa. Xe survived the succession by accident, mostly since none of xeir siblings considered xem a threat, and has no idea what to do with this sudden responsibility xe didn’t want or expect.

Xeir parent is trying to kill xem, and all xeir friends die if xe dies. Good luck, KT.

Tropes:

  • Abusive Parents: Netza is xeir parent. Xe constantly degrades Ketier, has killed all xeir siblings, and is trying to kill xem.
  • Damsel in Distress / Distressed Dude: No gender. Major distress. The impending threat on xeir life (and all the repurcussions that would have) is the main driver for the plot.
  • Extreme Doormat: As Mulaney once said, you could pour soup in xeir lap and xe would apologize to you.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Votakh dies as a result of Ketier’s inability to lead. Malkut’s sibling dies as a result of Malkut being assigned to Ketier, and although that wasn’t really under xeir control, xe still feels guilty over it.
  • Friends Are Chosen, Family Aren't: Although technically most of xeir friends were assigned to xem, xe cherishes xeir friends - and is terrified of xeir bio family.
