Rapture
Rapture (first introduced here
) was an underwater city built in the Second Age by billionaire Strong Rye Field. Rapture, as originally intended by Strong Rye Field, was in theory an Objectivist utopia where any Pony seeking it are free to pursue their own self-interests without being hindered by outside interference, or the needs of others. open/close all folders
General
- Adaptation Name Change:
- The Big Daddies of the BioShock series were renamed "Big Brothers" here.
- The drugs ADAM and EVE were renamed Chestnut and Peach, respectively, after the Codexverse's antediluvian, mythological ancestors of modern Ponykind, Chestnut and Queen Peachy/Rhodonite Mirror.
- False Utopia: Much like BioShock's Rapture, the Codexverse's Rapture is this. Founded by Strong Rye Field, Rapture was intended to be a laissez-faire utopia free of both religious and government interference of any kind, where any citizens are free to propser for his or her own gain without hinderances, united only by a "Great Chain" of industry. Unfortunately, Rapture fell apart because there was no interference to keep it in check — corrupt businesses ruthlessly exploited the common folk, scientists performed horrific experiments For Science!, deranged artists pursued depraved fields of art and performance, and during it all, a stallion named "Atlas" took advantage of the situation to plunge Rapture into Civil War. Things went From Bad to Worse once the Fantastic Drugs, Peach and Chestnut, were introduced, creating horribly mutated Splicers along with the heavily cybernetically-grafted Big Brothers and their charges, the Chestnut-producing Little Sisters. It got so bad that various nations voted to have Rapture destroyed once information about it was leaked to the public, feeling the costs of keeping it around ultimately outweighed the benefits.
- Fantastic Drug: Central to Rapture's downfall were the drugs Chestnut and Peach, revolutionary yet extremely addictive mutagenic Plasmid technology. Developed from an exotic species of sea slugs found next to an underwater canyon full of mysterious luminescent biomass, Chestnut and Peach allowed consumers to rewrite their own genetic makeup and give themselves mystical abilities without any limitations. Unfortunately, public acceptance of the drugs — combined with the complete lack of governmental regulation — caused the populace to devolve into crazed Chestnut-addicted Splicers, and led to amoral scientists preying on young fillies to create the Little Sisters, living Chestnut factories with sea slugs implanted in their stomachs and brainwashed to harvest residual Chestnut substances from corpses.
- Gone Horribly Wrong: In theory, Rapture was supposed to be an Objectivist utopia where all Ponies can seek freedom in all ventures (especially business ventures) without fear of being oppressed by outside forces, and the "bright and powerful" will be completely unhindered by the "small". In truth, the lack of even self-restraint corrupted Rapture into a Crapsack World plagued with all kinds of problems, leading to its ultimate destruction by world governments who initially wanted to salvage what was left, yet deemed it too troublesome to benefit from in the long run.
- A True Story in My Universe: In the Codexverse, the events surrounding Rapture actually happened in the Second Age, give or take a few differences. Long after its destruction, accounts of Rapture would eventually inspire an acclaimed series of video-games that exposed players to an absolutely hellish underwater world inspired by the horrors that occurred in its real-life counterpart.
- Wretched Hive: Rapture can be seen as a city-wide deconstruction of what happens when a society revolves entirely around Objectivism. Without religion or government to keep everything in check, everything fell apart — from corrupt business CEOs ruthlessly exploiting the population, to Mad Scientists and Mad Artists given free reign to perform depraved acts of science and art without care for the people they preyed on. Then the drugs Chestnut and Peach are created, causing Rapture to populated by insane, horribly mutated Splicers in addition to the Chestnut-producing Little Sisters and their heavily gene-spliced, heavily cybernetically grafted bodyguards, the Big Brothers. It got so bad that various natious, after initially intending to salvage what was left of Rapture in secret, ultimately voted to have it destroyed in response to immense public outcry and the realization that the costs outweighed the benefits.
