Papilion

    open/close all folders

    General
  • Adaptation Name Change: Mewni is changed to Papilion here.
  • Civil War: The "Papilion Civil War" was a direct result of the Papilion Pantheon declaring war on Sparkling Wing in revenge for exposing their corruption, dividing Papilion itself into two factions — the traditionalists who wanted to preserve the status quo, and Sparkling Wing's group who recognized their home was beyond saving. Ultimately, Sparkling Wing's group won, but Papilion was left a smoking ruin.
  • Expy: Papilion is based on the realm of Mewni from Star vs. the Forces of Evil, sharing both its fantastical inhabitants and magic, but also its unfortunate xenophobic and misandrist social order.

Papilion Pantheon

    General
  • Adaptation Name Change: The Magic High Commission is changed to the Papilion Pantheon here.
  • Expy: As a whole, the Papilion Pantheon is based on the Magic High Commission.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: The Magic High Commission all die off when Star and her family decide to destroy the source of all magic. Here, the Papilion Pantheon still dies off, but they're instead killed off by Sparkling Wing and his forces for their crimes, after which they were dragged off to Nekelmu's Hell-Realms. Innocent and/or repentant members like Queen Hexagenia Avalon, however, were spared.
  • Götterdämmerung: Towards the end of the "Papilion Civil War", the Papilion Pantheon would undergo one called the "Twilight of the Papilion Pantheon", which would see it utterly wiped out by Sparkling Wing and his forces. Save for innocent and/or repentant members like Queen Hexagenia Avalon, the Papilion Pantheon was wiped out and dragged off to Nekelmu's Hell-Realms to answer for their crimes.
  • Jerkass Gods: The Papilion Pantheon was responsible for much of the suffering and death that occurred in Papilion. They destroyed Obsidian Star's interracial family out of prejudice, covered up her hybrid daughter's existence by placing a peasant filly on the throne, and indirectly caused Rising Sun's death by sabotaging her efforts to end Papilion's war with the "monsters" peacefully, driving both her to madness and her enemies to eventually retaliate. Many Papilion Pantheon members were also members of the Papilion Royal Family, enforcing a misandrist social order and emotionally abusing a young Sparkling Wing for being born a colt instead of a filly. When Sparkling Wing later Ascended to godhood and exposed their crimes to the world, the Papilion Pantheon decided to declare war on him in revenge and spite, kickstarting the "Papilion Civil War" that ultimately led to their own demise.
  • Would Hurt a Child: They as a whole were disgusted with Princess Meteor Shower's existence and planned to subject her to a horrible fate for being a hybrid. Fortunately, Sparkling Wing saved Meteor Shower, but they still went ahead and covered up her existence by replacing her with a peasant filly, Joyous Festival.

    Queen Hexagenia Avalon

Papilion Royal Family

    General
  • Adaptational Karma: In canon, many Butterfly Queens were xenophobic, corrupt, and sexist, and only in death did they have a Heel Realization and decide to help Star destroy the Realm of Magic. Here, many Papilion Queens remained unrepentant even after having their crimes exposed to the world, and thus were killed by Sparkling Wing's faction in the resulting Civil War and "Twilight" of their pantheon. The survivors were innocent and/or repentant members who defected to Sparkling Wing's faction.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The Butterfly Family is changed to the Papilion Royal Family here.
  • Adaptation Species Change: The Butterfly Family consists of Mewmans, who are Human Aliens with the ability to wield magic and transform into butterfly-like creatures. Here, the Papilion Royal Family are Flutter Pony hybrids due to suspected interference from Changelings to preserve what was left of the original Flutter Pony race.
  • Ancestral Weapon: The Butterfly Wand and the Royal Book of Spells were First Age artifacts that have been in the Papilion Royal Family's possession for generations. Only female Papilion royals were allowed to use them; Sparkling Wing became the first male royal to use them, only to have them taken away and given to his sister, Rising Sun, after her birth. Both the Butterfly Wand and the Royal Book of Spells end up destroyed; the latter was destroyed by Krieg to keep them from interfering in his Godhood Seeker plans, while the former was used as material to build Sparkling Wing's current wand, the Wand of Unity.
  • Baby Factory: As in canon, due to Papilion being matriarchal, males were treated by the Papilion Royal Family as little more than a means to secure future heirs for the throne. When Queen Silver Clock tried defying this by making Sparkling Wing her successor, she ended up being cowed into having a daughter by her divine relatives, who would go on to abuse her son for threatening the status quo. Eventually, the practice ends with Papilion's destruction, with its successor kingdom Metamorpha being significantly more egalitarian under Sparkling Wing's rule.
  • Badass Family: The Papilion Royal Family consists almost entirely of Queens who are both powerful mages and full-fledged goddesses. As Sparkling Wing showed, even male royals could become badass in their own right, but their potential was stunted by the misandrist social order enforced by the Queens and the wider Papilion Pantheon.
  • Deity of Human Origin: Papilion Royals can choose to Ascend to godhood and join the local pantheon, but Papilion being a matriarchy, only females are given this privilege. This changed when Sparkling Wing became the first male Papilion royal to Ascend, thanks to those like Luminiferous and Golden Scepter who didn't care for gender restrictions.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: After they were killed by Sparkling Wing's faction, the corrupt divine members of the Papilion Royal Family were dragged off to receive eternal torment in Nekelmu's Hell-Realms for their crimes.
  • Expy: As a whole, the Papilion Royal Family is based on the Butterfly Family.
  • Heir Club for Men: Inverted; only females are allowed to rule and wield magic, with the Butterfly Wand and Royal Book of Spells being family heirlooms that are passed from mother to daughter. Sparkling Wing's female divine relatives didn't like that he was born male and showed great magical potential, and when he was made heir to the throne, they pressured his mother, Queen Silver Clock, to supersede his claim by having a daughter.
  • Magic Is Feminine: As in canon, magic is restricted only to female Papilion royals, with Queens and Princesses being allowed to use the Butterfly Wand and the Royal Book of Spells. Sparkling Wing showing great promise as a Weather mage irked his female divine relatives to the point of telling him he wouldn't amount to anything as a male, giving him massive self-esteem issues, while pressuring his mother, Queen Silver Clock, to have a daughter that could replace him as heir to the throne. Sparkling Wing ended up proving his abusive relatives wrong thanks to people who believed in him, leading to the destruction of Papilion and, by extension, its gender-based restrictions on magic.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Not only were many Queens deeply xenophobic, they were also misandrist and enforced a social order that placed females as the superior sex, with males barred from things that are considered female-only privileges like magic and Ascension. This bites them all in the ass when Sparkling Wing, a male Papilion royal, Ascends to godhood in defiance of tradition and exposes the Queens' crimes to the world, leading to Papilion's destruction and their deaths.
  • Puppet Queen: As in canon, Queen Joyous Festival and all of her descendants were secretly pawns of the Papilion Pantheon, as they were put on the throne solely to cover up information about Queen Obsidian Star, her relationship with a Fire Jotunn, and her hybrid daugher Princess Meteor Shower. Many benevolent Papilion royals had a Heroic BSoD upon realizing they're not true royalty.
  • Royalty Superpower: As in canon, only female Papilion royals were allowed to wield the Butterfly Wand and the Royal Book of Spells. They're also the only ones who are granted the privilage of divine Ascension, which male royals are barred from. Sparkling Wing became the first male Papilion royal to not only wield his family's Ancestral Weapons, but also Ascend to godhood outside of his family's supervision.
  • Wanted a Son Instead: Due to Papilion being a matriarchy, male royals were barred from the line of inheritance. Queen Silver Clock tried bucking tradition by making her son, Sparkling Wing, her heir, but she got pressured into birthing a daugher instead. Sparkling Wing, meanwhile, was emotionally abused for being an upstart male who threatened the status quo, giving him long-lasting self-esteem issues.
  • Women Are Wiser: As Papilion was a matriarchy, females were portrayed as the superior sex, being magically and intellectually powerful than males. However, many Queens consistently proved themselves to be xenophobic, sexist bigots who were more concerned with preserving the status quo; the few who tried bucking tradition were either set up to fail, killed, or worse. Ultimately, it was the male Sparkling Wing who ended up literally and figuratively destroying the old ways by exposing Papilion's crimes to the world, leading to its downfall.

Queen Silver Clock, the Queen of Hours
A unicorn queen of a Third-Age kingdom, the wife of King-Consort Cardinal Feather, and the mother of King Sparkling Wing and Queen Rising Sun. Silver Clock was known for being a powerful time sorceress, and when Sparkling Wing was born, she showered him with love and adoration, leaving him a bit spoiled. Notably, Silver Clock saw in him the potential to become a great ruler and tried turning him into her successor by encouraging him to learn magic, passing to him her personal spellbook so he could write in new spells, and naming him her official heir to the throne.

However, because the kingdom she ruled was matriarchal, Silver Clock came under heavy pressure from her subjects, who didn't want a male ruler on the throne and wanted her to have a daughter. She eventually caved in and had Rising Sun, who was named her "true" heir, automatically superseding Sparkling Wing's claim of succession. While Sparkling Wing was happy with this, as he was actually disinterested in ruling, his public rejection by his subjects due to being male left him rather heartbroken. A disguised Luminiferous happened to visit the kingdom around this time, and he was understandably angry when he learned what happened, resulting in him calling out the entire kingdom for ruining someone's potential because of a "mistake" in their gender.

Recognizing that her son would be better off elsewhere, Silver Clock pleaded for Luminiferous to take in Sparkling Wing as his student. Luminiferous agreed, and after a tearful goodbye, Sparkling Wing set out with the antediluvian Alicorn, traveling all over Equus while learning under him. Silver Clock would eventually learn through a letter that Sparkling Wing became an Alicorn on one of his travels, and was so overjoyed that she started crying.

She was eventually succeeded by Rising Sun, though despite her subjects' expectations, she would become a worse ruler than her older brother would have been had he not been superseded in her favor.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Queen Skywynne Butterfly is changed to Queen Silver Clock here.
  • Expy: Of Queen Skywynne Butterfly, as both are queens who were powerful time sorceresses and loving mothers to their children. Like Skywynne, Silver Clock wanted her son to be a King, but her subjects pressured her into having a daughter as they despised deviations from tradition, and tradition dictated that only females should rule. However, Silver Clock let Sparkling Wing train under someone who recognized his potential, leading to him Ascending to godhood instead.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Silver Clock recognized that her son had the makings of a great King and made Sparkling Wing her heir to the throne. Unfortunately, this provoked the wrath of her divine relatives, who pressured her into having a daughter by threatening her son's life. She caved in and birthed Rising Sun, but while Sparkling Wing was spared, he was emotionally abused by his divine relatives for being an upstart male who threatened the status quo. When Luminiferous arrived, Silver Clock allowed him to train her son, leading to Sparkling Wing becoming a god and the ruler of his own kingdom.
  • Good Parents: She was a very loving mother and adored both of her two kids - she wanted Sparkling Wing to be a great ruler, and tried bringing out his potential by encouraging him to learn magic and making him her official heir to the throne. However, her subjects didn't want to accept a male ruler on the throne, due to the kingdom being matriarchal, and heavily pressured her into having a daughter, which resulted in the birth of Rising Sun.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: Silver Clock wanted Sparkling Wing to succeed her as King because she believed he had the potential for it. However, both her subjects and divine relatives opposed this, with the latter threatening to harm Sparkling Wing if she continued defying tradition. To appease everyone and protect her son, Silver Clock superseded Sparkling Wing's claim to the throne, but she deeply regretted her choice afterward.
  • My Greatest Failure: She deeply regretted ruining Sparkling Wing's potential as a ruler for the sake of pleasing her subjects, despite having high hopes for her son. This is partially the reason why Luminiferous was lenient with her after he learned what happened, other than Sparkling Wing begging the antediluvian Alicorn to go easy on her since she was keeping up appearances.
  • Parental Favoritism: Subverted. Because her kingdom is matriarchal, she had to give birth to a daughter as dictated by tradition, and devoted her attention to her daughter, Rising Sun, and trained her as a future queen. However, in private, she loved both of her children, and deeply regretted superseding Sparkling Wing's claim of succession to the throne, since she always believed he was destined for greatness.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Had she refused to let her subjects sway her into having a daughter, Queen Rising Sun would not have existed. Instead, Sparkling Wing would succeed her as the kingdom's first King as she always hoped he would.
    • Had she not met Luminiferous and pleaded for him to take her son as his apprentice, Sparkling Wing would've stayed home instead and eventually fade into obscurity, his potential rejected and squandered by his subjects because of his sex.
  • Tears of Joy: She shed these out of pride for her son when she learned through a letter that Sparkling Wing became an Alicorn, having finally become the great person he was meant to be.
  • Time Master: Implied; her name, her description as a unicorn sorceress who specialized in time magic, and the fact that she's an Expy of Skywynne Butterfly, who was dubbed the "Queen of Hours", pegs her as this.

King Sparkling Wing Metamorpha, the Royal Unifier
See his folder entry here.

    Queen Rising Sun
The younger sister of Prince Sparkling Wing, the Alicorn god of Peace, Leadership, and Unity. Rising Sun was born out of a need to secure a successor for her kingdom's throne - Sparkling Wing was the original heir, but because the line of succession was completely matrilineal, Queen Silver Clock faced enormous pressure to give birth to a daughter, and eventually did so despite having high hopes for her son. While Sparkling Wing was saddened that his subjects were quick to dismiss him as a royal because he was born with the wrong sex, he doesn't blame his mother or his sister, and still loves them both like family.

Rising Sun would grow up and succeed her mother, and during her reign, she would develop racism towards non-Pony entities and monsters, something that would make her butt heads with Sparkling Wing. Notably, tensions were rising between her kingdom and its Griffon neighbors, and yet despite her and her brother's diplomacy, the Griffon leaders refused to consider peaceful options due to rising hostilities and political sabotage, leaving Rising Sun no choice but to go to war and put the "disgusting interlopers" in their place. It would be the last time Sparkling Wing would see his sister, as a few days before, he got into an argument with her while trying to make her reconsider waging war, only for Rising Sun to die in battle.

However, Rising Sun did leave behind an heir: Her daughter, Obsidian Star, who would inherit the throne shortly after her mother's death. Despite this devastating loss, Sparkling Wing would serve as a part-time adviser to his niece after she became Queen, until he was assured that she could rule successfully on her own.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Queen Solaria Butterfly is changed to Queen Rising Sun here.
  • Expy: Of Queen Solaria Butterfly, being racist, warmongering queens whose genocidal wars eventually led to their deaths. Like her character inspiration, she was also born out of the kingdom's need to secure an heir, after the public rejected her older brother as heir to the throne due to his sex and not wanting to break matriarchal traditions.
  • Irony: She was chosen by her people to succeed her mother as Queen by virtue of her gender and the line of royal succession being completely matrilineal. Her older brother, Sparkling Wing, on the other hand, was rejected for being born male and yet managed to become an Alicorn god, something that secretly made her feel inadequate compared to him.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Her daughter, Obsidian Star, would become a far better and tolerant Queen, largely thanks to the influence of her uncle Sparkling Wing, who served as her advisor until he was confident she could rule on her own.
  • Magic Knight: Much like Queen Solaria, she was both an experienced warrior and a skilled magician in life.
  • Point of Divergence: Had Queen Silver Clock not given in to pressure to have a daughter, she wouldn't have existed at all. Instead, her older brother, Prince Sparkling Wing, would have inherited the throne instead and fulfilled Silver Clock's expectations as their kingdom's first mage king... though that would mean Sparkling Wing would never leave and become an Alicorn like he did.
  • Sanity Slippage: A combination of factors like rising political tensions, mounting frustrations with the hardheaded and incorrigible Griffons who antagonized her kingdom, and political sabotage drove her to wage war with the Griffons. It was during her battles that her preexisting Fantastic Racism worsened, something that alienated her diplomatic brother, Sparkling Wing. Her refusal to see reason eventually led to her death.
  • The Un-Favourite: According to Sparkling Wing, she secretly felt inadequate compared to him because she had to live with the knowledge that her older brother, who was cast aside by their people for being born a colt, got to become a god while she lived a mortal Queen.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Much like her character inspiration, she believed that going to war with non-Pony entities, such as the Griffons, was the only option of survival since her and her brother's attempts at diplomacy with the Griffon leaders didn't work. Sparkling Wing tried talking her down, only to fail when she still went through with her decision to wage war with her Griffon neighbors, and died in battle a few days later.
  • The Wrongful Heir to the Throne: She was considered to be the rightful heir of Queen Silver Clock by virtue of being female and the line of succession being completely matrilineal. Ironically, she turned out to be this as she eventually became a racist warmonger during her reign, which led to her death. Sparkling Wing, who was rejected for being of the wrong sex, proved himself worthy of the throne by Ascending to godhood and becoming a god of Peace, Unity, Leadership, and Weather — things that are actually desirable in a good King.

    Queen Obsidian Star
The daughter of Queen Rising Sun, making her the niece of King Sparkling Wing Metamorpha, and the mother of Princess Meteor Shower.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Queen Eclipsa Butterfly is changed to Queen Obsidian Star here.
  • Expy: Of Queen Eclipsa Butterfly, being the daughter of a racist Queen and a Lady of Black Magic with a fondness for monsters. She also fell in love with a "monster" who utterly dwarfs her in size and had a hybrid daughter with him, which provokes the wrath of entities more powerful than her and leads to her being sealed away, separating her from her daughter for years. Unlike Eclipsa, Obsidian Star did not end up fighting her own daughter thanks to Sparkling Wing's intervention, but instead loses her Fire Jotunn husband when the corrupt Papilion Pantheon had him killed out of racism.

    Princess Meteor Shower
The hybrid daughter of Queen Obsidian Star and her Fire Jotunn husband, Gleypir.

    Queen Joyous Festival

    Queen Royal Riddle

Princess Moonflower Metamorpha, the Maiden of Fate

    Queen Stellar Brush

    Queen Shining Comet
The mother of Queen Harvest Moon.

    Queen Harvest Moon

    Princess Starburst

Other residents

    Gleypir

  • Adaptation Name Change: Globgor is changed to Gleypir here.
  • Adaptation Species Change: Globgor is a monster in canon (specifically a size-shifter). Here, he's a Fire Jotunn, a type of Giant Deer that has fire magic.
  • Death by Adaptation: In canon, Globgor was sealed away like Eclipsa was by Rhombulus for having an interracial romance with a Butterfly Queen, and was set free in later seasons. Here, he was executed by the corrupt Papilion Pantheon instead.
  • Expy: Of Globgor, Meteora's father.
