Zoticus Sergius Licinus:

• Friendly Sniper: Finds out he is a good shot in training, and while he never uses it, he does use his eye for quick decisions, and is a friendly helpful guy all around.

Alala:

• Good Parents: Sees hers as these.
• Determinator: Will do what she has to do, including bribery, to get to her goal.
• The Unfettered: She has one goal in mind, and will do it, no matter what.

The Recruiter:

• Great Offscreen War: Fought in it.
• No Name Given: Doesn’t give it, is not asked for it, and is simply referred to as The Recruiter.
• Old Soldier: Fought in the war against Japan/Nippon, 1935-1953, and saw “the end of coal and the rise of Nuclear power.”
• Recruiters Always Lie: Averted. He calmly straight out asks Alala if she thinks she even has a realistic chance of doing what she plans to do, noting that the military will send her where they need her, not where she wants to go.

Eufemia:

• Determinator: Holding out in one of the most hostile battlefields of the war, and doing it smartly.
• We Work Well Together: Is how she and Zoticus become squadmates.

Alala’s parents:

• Happily Married: Well, remarried, and living together.
• Good Parents: All they want for their daughter, when she reaches them, is to live.
• Parents as People: They come across as very down to earth, good people.
• Unnamed Parent: The mother, though there really is never time for it.
