Wilson
A diesel-electric hybrid, and one of the main trainees. He's a very gung-ho, easily-distracted train, and has a kiddish personality due to being a newly-made train.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: He often gets distracted from his assignments.
- Cheerful Child: He's very joyful, and while not technically a child, has a childish mindset due to being "young"/newly-made.
- Genki Guy: His main trait is his cheerful, energetic personality.
Brewster
A very strong, but at the same time somewhat cautious, diesel train. He's also a trainee, so he is also a bit childish, though he's considerably less childish and more rational than Wilson and Koko.
- The Big Guy: He specialises in building and hauling heavy loads.
- Genius Bruiser: He does all the heavy-lifting, but he's also the most sensible.
- I Dont Think That'sSuchAGoodIdea: He's often the most unsure about adventures.
- Only Sane Man: The most rational of the trainees.
Koko
The only girl in the main group of trainees, and an electric train. Like Wilson, she's also very adventurous and energetic, but she's not easily-distracted like him.
- Cheerful Child: She's a trainee, which are sort of the train equivalent of children, and she's very peppy.
- Genki Girl: She's very fast and enthusiastic.
- One of the Boys: Her two closest friends are boy trains.
Hoot and Toot
Two secondary trainees, who are diesel-electric trains and nearly always stuck together; it takes great effort for them to separate.
- Meaningful Name: They're called that because they honk their horns a lot.
- Rhyme Theme Naming: Hoot and Toot.
- Single-Minded Twins: They're joined together in a manner similar to conjoined twins, and they're usually in synch.
- Theme Twin Naming: While they're trains, they give off the vibe of twins, and their names rhyme.
Hodge
An unamused trainee who often does garbage duty.
- Meaningful Name: He was named because he was built from a "hodgepodge" of different parts.
Emery
A hammy, heterochromic train who's a bit of a trickster.

Zephie
A childish, giggly scissor-lift train who is usually driven by Eddie.
- The Hyena: She giggles a lot.
Piper
A vegetable oil-powered steam engine, who is somewhat accident prone due to being an impulsive newbie.

Tai
A purple trainee who works at the docks.
- Sixth Ranger: She doesn't appear until season four.
- Token Minority: One of the few characters with an Asian name.
Old Puffer Pete
An elderly steam train who likes to tell stories.
- Accidental Misnaming: Often forgets others' names.
- Forgetful Jones: Downplayed — he has a tendency to forget names.
- Meaningful Name: The "Old" in his name comes from the fact that he's elderly, and "Puffer" comes from him being a steam train.
- Old Windbag: He's an old train and prone to telling long, boring stories.
- Scatterbrained Senior: Downplayed — he's old, and sometimes forgets names, but is pretty much lucid.

A Kenyan-accented zoo train.

- Token Minority: One of the few African characters.
Frostini
A moody, Italian-accented train who runs the ice cream factory.
- Angry Chef: He can be quite snappy and he makes ice cream.
- As Long as It Sounds Foreign: He doesn't have a real Italian name; just an English word with "-ini" at the end.

- Intergenerational Friendship: Sort of. She has an adult-like personality, and her friend Koko has a child-like personality.
- Meaningful Name: Her name sounds like "pace" and she's very fast.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Is Koko's friend, but has a rivalry with her.

A courier.
Skipper Stu
A diesel train who works at the habour.
- Alliterative Name: Skipper Stu.
- Meaningful Name: The "skipper" in his name comes from him working near the sea.
Harry and Hamish
Two diesels who also work at the harbour.
- Theme Twin Naming: Played with. They're trains, but they're similar to twins in that they look the same, and their names both start with "H-A".
