Singers and Scrollmen of Mount Alban

Scholars of Mount Alban, whose house alliances have since been rendered unimportant

    Ashe

Ashe

Torisen: I grew up in the Haunted Lands, Ashe. I saw how haunts change. You belong to the shadows now. Sooner or later, they will consume you.
Ashe: Ah… but before then… what songs I will sing!
Torisen: I wonder if the living will be able to bear them.
  • Career-Ending Injury: She was a randon until she got an ax to the knee. She went on to become a singer, which she loves, so it's all good.
Harn: She gave up her commission after an axe blow nearly took off her leg, although I still say a good healer could have lessened the damage. The fool would never see one.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Haunt
  • Old Friend: Ashe and Harn, who were randon together back in the day.
Ashe: I'm glad to see you finally remember who I am. After that blank stare you gave me in the fire-timber hall, I thought your wits had finally gone missing.
Harn: No, just on a long hike. [to Torisen] Ashe and I were cadets and one-hundred captains together with the Southern Host long before you were born.
  • Verbal Tic: She uses ellipsis… between her phrases… because she's a haunt… and speaking is hard.

    Index

Index

  • Grumpy Old Man
  • Knowledge Broker: Among the scholars of Mount Alban
Kirien: Index started collecting facts about facts—where to find them, who knows what, that sort of thing. It's made him invaluable, and powerful. A word of warning: many scholars exchange information on a barter basis. Index may look as if he's answering questions indiscriminately, but he's keeping close track of debts and credits.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: The nickname Index comes from how he knows where all the information at the college is.

Kencyr of minor houses

Min-drear

    Rue

Rue

  • The Heart: Although Rue is tough and scrappy, she's also the shortest (shorter even than Jame, although stockier), open with her emotions, and the most domestic.
  • Important Haircut: Rue hacked off her hair to leave behind with her lord, to be burnt in place of her body should she die far from home.
  • The Jeeves: At least, this is what she wants to be for Jame; she appoints herself as Jame's personal servant or valet, a role which Jame is desperately in need of, since she's quite poor at looking after herself outside of combat. Rue tries to get Jame to dress better, to eat better, and remember practical considerations in general, and is fanatically loyal to Jame.

The house of Kithorn

    Marc

Marcarn

"The best man I know is a seven foot tall, ninety-five year old Kendar named Marcarn whom, ancestors know, I miss with all my heart."
Jame
A dear friend of Jame's; originally from Kithorn, then a Caineron yondri, then a Harth yondri, and now more or less a Knorth yondri.
  • Because I'm Good At It: He was a warrior all his life because he was a good, not because he wanted to be one.
  • The Berserker (Inverted): Marc fakes berserker fits so he can avoid having to fight.
Marc: The splinters are a nuisance, but on the whole I'd rather break furniture than heads.
  • The Big Guy: He's huge, even for a Kendar man.
  • Brave Scot: He has a big red beard, and calls Jame "lass".
  • The Conscience: To Jame.
Jame: His moral sense is very good, far better than mine, and I hate to go against it.
  • Doomed Hometown/Sole Survivor: Of Kithorn, which was wiped out by Merikit tribesmen while he was out hunting.
  • Everyone Is Related: Brier is Marc's great-granddaughter.
  • Hired Guns: He's been forced to be one for most of his life.
  • Older Sidekick: To Jame, as well as an Intergenerational Friendship
  • The Perfectionist: In his stained-glass map project; he really wants to do it right, with materials from the correct regions.
  • Promotion to Parent: In Bound in Blood, he tells Torisen a story about Kithorn, and about trying to get food for his little sister Willow then putting her to bed because their parents were both dead by that point.
Marc: Anyway, one bright, bitter day my little sister Willow was so hungry—how do you explain to a child that crying doesn't help?—that I went out, cleared the snow off a patch in the spinney where I knew the loam was deep, set a fire, and thawed a patch of ground. It froze again almost as fast as I could hack it up, but I found enough roots, frozen worms, and hibernating bugs to make a thin gruel, which the poor thing promptly threw up. When I'd finally gotten her to bed—our parents were both dead by then, y'see—
  • Retired Badass: After a life of being a warrior, he finally gets to be a craftsman, like he always wanted.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He killed one tribesman for every Kencyr they slaughtered at Kithorn.
Marc: Ah, but it was a red, red time.

    Willow

Willow

Marc's little sister, who died at Kithorn.

Arrin-ken

    Immalai

Immalai the Silent

"For us, alas, good is no less terrible than evil. We can only trust our honor and try to keep our balance."
Immalai
  • The Mentor: To Jorin, actually, having taught him to hunt and otherwise provide for himself when Jame isn't around to do it for him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Though he does not approve of all of Jame's actions, he proves willing to give her the chance to redeem herself completely and is willing to help her while she is in his territory.

    Dark Judge

the Dark Judge

"What is there in the Master's House but dust and ashes? You were burned there, so you make yourself a fire to burn others. Does their pain ease your own?"
Jame
  • Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Subverted in that it is still an enemy of the torturer, instead it went mad and nihilistic.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Wants to kill Jame largely because she reminds him of Gerridon and the changers.
  • The Faceless: Literally, as Keral's handiwork left him with something that isn't really a face by any but the most technical definition of the term.
  • Knight Templar: Seems to favor the "kill them and let the Three-Faced God sort them out" brand of justice.
