Contestants

    Escher and Musiea

  • Opposites Attract: It's hard to imagine a couple that are more opposite.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Musiea tries to kill Escher as soon as they arrive at the Ark Arena, and work with each other because they must (at least in the beginning).

Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe

A mercenary brought to the Ark Arena. In his storyline, he killed the priest and Musiea's fellow nuns from her convent, leading to her searching for him for revenge.

Musiea

Voiced by: Marina Inoue

A nun whose priest and fellow nuns were killed by Escher. She has been searching for him for revenge. She also takes care of a large group of war orphans, whom Escher allowed to escape the slaughter.

She is revealed to Aida, Escher’s missing only childhood friend who was saved from slavery as was treated as a sister to him.

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Escher. Despite him killing her fellow nuns and priest and wanting to kill him for revenge, she becomes romantically involved with him as the story progresses.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A Downplayed example, she can be quick to anger, stubborn, and despite being harsh and hateful towards Escher, she has a soft and caring side for others such as Mana, Zhamo, and other contestants and including the orphans whom she took care of in her monastery. In Ayuta's scenario is really nice to Mana despite being her opponent.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Escher.
  • Lady of War: She is extremely graceful in combat.
  • Royal Rapier: She wields a rapier in combat.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Her is a blonde medium length ponytail with a braid alongside with a small tiara.
  • You Killed My Father: Musiea wants to kill Escher for murdering the priests that ran her orphanage. Not only is he guilty, he freely admits it. Which then gets flipped on her because the priest was selling the orphans as slaves right under her nose. Escher was hired to take care of the priest when he didn't follow through on a deal with his employers. In their own story, anyway. In Eluca's timeline Escher didn't do it, he killed the one responsible and Musiea got the wrong idea. Other routes drop the plot entirely.

    Eluca and Zhamo

Eluca

Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara

The royal bodyguard and top warrior of the Southern kingdom. In her own timeline, she has a conflicted relationship with Zhamo, whom she was ordered to kill.

  • Stripperiffic: Her outfit, which consists of a metal bra, hotpants, greaves and bracers, is the most revealing one of the four female contestants.

Zhamo

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

A prince of the Southern kingdom. In his own timeline, his parents were suspected of treason by the Divine King, who had Eluca kill them in front of him. She was about to kill him when they were taken to the Ark Arena.

  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Subverted, he wears a metal chest plate.
  • Nice Guy: He is a kind person who never hates Eluca for killing his parents and treats her with kindness and respect. To other contestants, he is very friendly towards them despite being their opponents.
  • Warrior Prince: He is a prince that is a capable warrior with the spear and is supportive of his partner Eluca along her side.

    Ayuta and Mana

Ayuta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3a587b9a_94a7_454c_aa46_d288047f8a51.jpeg

Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto

A stablehand in the Eastern kingdom. He is in love with Princess Mana.

  • Amnesiac Dissonance: His current personality is much nicer than his original one.
  • Berserk Button: Whatever you do, don't EVER try to hurt Mana, because if you do, Ayuta will screw you up. He even tells the game's resident badass Snarker Escher that if he ever threatened Mana, he would cut him down. And then he kills Alto. Twice. Both directly and indirectly.
  • Declaration of Protection: Even more so than the others, Ayuta is very vocal about his commitment to protect his partner.
  • Dual Wielding
  • Duel Boss: In Olgar and Vahti's scenario, Olgar fights Ayuta alone in their scheduled Ark Arena battle, without either of their partners.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: In Olgar's story.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: An interesting version of this occurs. Shortly before the start of each Ark Arena, if he wasn't the winner of the previous tournament, Ayuta awakens in a new place, not remembering anything, and having a subconscious suggestion to fall in love and find a partner for the new Ark Arena.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's fast, and he hits hard.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Mana, in Eluca and Escher's timelines.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: When he gets angry or has his memory returned to him. You can see this briefly during Eluca and Zhamo's story, frequently during his own story, and then permanently during Olgar's story.
  • Time Abyss: He's much, much older than his appearance would indicate, having been half of the very first First Couple, as well as the emergency replacement for the male half in every single Ark Arena since. In between tournaments where he isn't the winner, he's put in a People Jar.

Princess Mana

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cfa7df21_a9f5_4456_8ff5_ce38e253b34b.jpeg

Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa

The princess of the Eastern kingdom. She's actually Shea, one of the princess's body doubles.

  • Cherry Blossom Girl
  • Damsel in Distress: In Olgar's path, the Agent kidnaps her in order to add her powers to its own.
  • Dub Name Change: In the original Japanese version, Shea's real name is Yae, which explains the change from (S) to (Y) for her equipment.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine
  • Nice Girl: She is depicted as a really sweet young woman who deeply cares for Ayuta. For the other contestants she shows great sympathy after defeating them in Ark Arena matches.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Princess Mana dresses entirely in pink. Turns out she is not a princess after all but her body double Shea but in addition, the pink outfit matches her femininity despite not being the real Princess Mana.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Ayuta, in Eluca and Escher's timelines.
  • The Unfought: In Olgar and Vahti's scenario, Ayuta and Mana win their first battle in the Ark Arena against Eluca and Zhamo, but in the second battle Olgar fights Ayuta alone, without either of their partners.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She wears a cherry blossom in her hair as well as her waist wrap, wears very traditional and very Japanese inspired clothing, and is implied to be from a Fantasy Counterpart Culture of Japan.

    Olgar and Vahti

  • Bag of Spilling: They start at level 1 like everyone else, despite being the winners of the previous tournament.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: They mention that their eldest child has died so long ago that Vahti can't even remember when, although this doesn't become a real plot point until the prequel.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Both of them are more than 10000 years old, despite looking only a little older than the other contestants.
  • Seemingly Hopeless Boss Fight: In Escher and Musiea's scenario, during their first Ark Arena battle, Olgar and Vahti will automatically heal all damage taken during their first three turns. Musiea starts to fear that they cannot defeat an immortal opponent, before Escher says that they'll need to work together to win; after Escher and Musiea use a Pair Attack (and specifically an attack, instead of a Gene command), the regeneration will stop, allowing Olgar and Vahti to be defeated conventionally.

Olgar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fa5294ab_c1c9_446e_bc42_d8aa713914f1.jpeg

Voiced by: Unshō Ishizuka

The winner of the previous Ark Tournament. He killed Vahti's parents in the previous tournament.

Vahti

Voiced by: Ayano Niina

Olgar's wife, and the other winner of the previous Ark Tournament. She acts very motherly towards the other contestants.

  • Action Mom: She is known as a badass mother who has a firstborn son in "Omega" who has the will to kick ass.
  • Damsel in Distress: In Olgar's path, Ayuta kidnaps her in order to replace her with the Theia clone.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Vahti is known as a motherly figure and is very caring towards her husband. Since she had a first child, she is known as a very loving mother.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her outfit has a plunging neckline that goes down to her navel.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Hinted at by Ayuta in their story. However, if Omega is canon to their timeline, it was a bit more complicated than that. Her parents Dante and Rachel became a monster thanks to Cyllis and was forced to kill them.

    Garrick and Alto

A knight pair summoned to the Ark Arena for unknown reasons. They are a non-playable couples where Garrick plays a short-lived role by recklessly attacking the agent and Alto gets killed by other characters.

Alto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/67e6696c_9647_418d_887e_8dcac42d871f.jpeg

Voiced by: Asami Seto

A female knight in love with Garrick.

She gets mentally traumatized after her partner’s death by attempting to attack the Agent and goes insane in each scenario she appears in.

  • Ax-Crazy: After the death of Garrick, Alto grows violently insane from her trauma before inevitably being put down by another contestant.
  • Heroic BSoD: After Garrick's death, this has completely traumatized her mentally and went violently unstable into attacking other fellow contestants out of jealousy.
  • Face–Heel Turn:
    • In Eluca's reality, she tries to kill Zhamo and Mana because no one else should have a partner if she doesn't.
    • In Ayuta's story, she tries to kill both Ayuta and Mana with no explanation by screaming insanely at them.
  • Killed Off for Real: She dies in different scenarios and is never mentioned again, excluding Olgar and Vahti’s scenario where she and Garrick are absent.
    • In Escher’s Scenario, she is finished off by Olgar in the second half of Clashing Grounds.
    • In Eluca’s Scenario, she gets killed Ayuta after attempting to kill Mana in the second half of Ancient Path to Death.
    • In Ayuta’s scenario, she gets killed by the second boss of Puragtory gruesomely after attempting to kill Ayuta and Mana.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She lasts a little longer than Garrick, but she, too, dies in every timeline that includes her.

Garrick

Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki

A male knight who has been decorated for his valor. He is in love with Alto.

He has a short-lived role due to showing what happens if anyone violates the rules of the Ark Arena will be killed.

  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His is long and blond and has a very handsome face.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: He appears in the beginning of the game when the other contestants were summoned to the Ark Arena and plays a short-lived role, his entire purpose (in the plot) is to show what happens when you don't play by the Ark Arena's rules. He recklessly attacks the Agent and is killed by the Executioner as a violation against the rules. Therefore, he is never mentioned again alongside with Alto.
  • So Long, and Thanks for All the Gear: Lampshaded in Ayuta's storyline. In this case, Escher says that he "wishes that he dropped his sword before he died.

Other Characters

    Piu-Piu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3fece683_12d3_4f81_b546_9df780738402.png

The shopkeeper in the Ark, a strange little being of unknown origin and strange mannerisms.

  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: FREAKING...PIU...PIU. And the thing is, you get HINTS from dialogue that he may just be more powerful than he seems, but their partner just blows it off as him being crazy. On top of that, you should rename the trope Crouching Moron Hidden Badass AND Genius. He's the one who BUILT the Ark! AND discovered Time Travel and Immortality! He is also the hardest boss in the game, which is why he's a bonus.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: It's even claimed that his perversion was so great, it had to be separated from him and made into a prototype Agent called "Libido", a mini-Super Boss.
  • Super Boss: Piu-Piu can only be fought after the True Final Boss and all of the mini-Bonus Bosses (who are sealed inside the cylinders that appear across the dungeons after the corresponding couple defeats the Final Boss) have all been defeated, and serves as the game's ultimate challenge. At level 100 (comparable to the True Final Boss' 40), he certainly proves that to you when you fight him.
  • Time Abyss: Even more so than Olgar and Vahti, he is as old as the Ark, making him over 20 million years old.
  • Was Once a Man: He was human but degenerated into the tiny creature he is today after 20 million years of Time Travel.

    The Agent

Voiced by: Tomoyuki Kono

The mysterious being that directs the Ark tournament and tells the contestants what to do.

  • Curb-Stomp Battle: When Garrick tries to defy the tournament, the Agent dispatches of him with almost no effort, before calling the Executioner to eliminate him.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: After the Agent is defeated, the game even rolls the credits, and boots the players back to the menu, and it's not until the player reloads their file that they can enter Bereshith Road.
  • Duel Boss: In Olgar's scenario, the True Agent must be defeated twice in succession, with the second battle being fought by Olgar alone.
  • Recurring Boss: The Agent is fought twice by each couple, the first time after they become the last standing couple as the game's Disc-One Final Boss, the second time after they reach the Ark Arena via Bereshith Road. In the second fight, the True Agent (as he's referred to in-game) uses the same attacks he did in the first one, but more powerful, and can also act twice per turn.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning

    The Executioner

The enforcer of the Arena, the Executioner appears to kill anyone who has lost an official fight or has broken the rules.

  • The Grim Reaper: Clearly inspired by it, it has a scythe plus three claws shaped like scythes.
  • HP to One: The Executioner's Maw of Darkness attacks reduces the target's HP to 1.
  • Sinister Scythe: The Executioner wields a scythe in combat.

    The Almighty

The controller of the Ark Arena.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Over time, Theia, the consciousness that runs the Almighty, breaks down. Once this happens, the AI becomes even more brutal, killing the contestants who fail instead of sending them back to Earth with their memories wiped, as originally planned.
  • Final Boss: The Almighty is the final boss fought in each couple's individual scenario. Once the player beats all four, they can fight the True Final Boss, the Qualia.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Time Abyss: She is as old as the Ark, making her over 20 million years old.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: In order to keep the Qualia from noticing her activities, she only sends one couple back, period. In order to defeat the Qualia, she organized 2003 of these tournaments so that the winners could strengthen the human race for the next iteration, all to breed a human capable of killing it.

    The Qualia

A being of Pure Energy that is destroying all the universes. Only a human, born in the Singularity, can hope to defeat it.
