Main Characters

    Kappa

Kappa, The Beacon

The Beacon of legend, created by the God of Surface to fulfill the prophecies of the many Mer Kingdoms. It's overrated.
  • A Boy and His X: Kappa's only companion before the series start was Worm, his axolotl, who he gives to Siren for the events of Season 2.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He has noticeably darker skin tone than the Sharks, who are all very pale.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Kappa desperately tries to find meaning in his life separate from fulfilling prophecies, while he does feel some fulfillment from helping the people he meets, he also feels immense guilt when he can't help everyone and wishes he could actually choose to fulfill a prophecy or not; eventually leading him to developing a resentment towards his own existence.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: He and Siren are both killed by a rampaging Lord Ogo in the climax of Season 2, they're revived by Neth giving them her two extra hearts.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: His design, unlike all the other characters doesn't resemble that of any real life marine species, which makes sense, being the Beacon that will save all the kingdoms. Specifically, his design is based on koi fish, which are not ocean dwellers by nature in real life.
  • Pretty Boy: Very attractive according to others.
  • Relationship Upgrade: He and Siren officially become boyfriends in the Season 2 finale.
  • Stepford Smiler: A big example. Kappa repeatedly avoids admitting how he really feels about certain situations, or how much certain things hurt him, because he doesn't want to upset others. An important point of his character development is admitting his negative emotions to others.
  • Straight Gay: Kappa's sexuality was confirmed when Jengu emitted her pheromone, which only works on those attracted to women, and it had no effect on him and Neth, he asks her if that meant she also liked guys.
  • Trauma Button: The sight of the Castle Colony reminded him of his first visit there when he was a child, where he tried fulfilling a Porpoise People's prophecy that involved him having to rip off his own scales that had healing properties for them, but he physically couldn't keep up with the demand due to the sheer numbers, the people told him it was okay if he can't help them and they'll find another way to stop their curse. By the series start, those people have died out and Kappa hasn't forgiven himself for what happened there.
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: His golden fins are his most distinguishing characteristic, and represent his status as the beacon.
    Siren

Prince Siren of the Shark Kingdom

The only son of the shark Queen, and the only shark to not have any scar on his body, which marks him as the choosen one destined to free their people.
  • Bridal Carry: Once had an Imagine Spot of picturing himself holding Kappa this way after Pagoon told him he could get "all the babes he wanted" after becoming a strong swordsmen, he gets to do it for real in Episode 115, where he scoops Kappa up thinking they were in danger when a crab was emerging from the sand beneath them.
  • Character Development: Starts out as a meek and somewhat cowardly person who doesn't know what to do with his life, but gradually becomes more assertive and confident.
  • The Chosen One: As the unscarred prince, Siren is prophecized to free his people from their doom by killing the beacon, Except that the roles are inverted, and he's the one supossed to die.
  • Covered in Scars: Averted at first, being the unscarred prince that is prophesied to free the Shark Kingdom. Subverted later, as his many adventures gradually give him more and more scars and injuries.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father left to try to find a way to break the Shark people's curse when Siren was very young, finding his dad becomes his motivation to leave his castle in an attempt to break his curse after the Prophecy Twist was revealed.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: The conclusion of Season 2 reveals he and Kappa were both killed by a rampaging Lord Ogo and were revived by Neth giving up two of her hearts to revive their bodies.
  • Luminescent Blush: When Kappa compliments him, Siren starts blushing like crazy.
  • One Head Taller: Appears to be this much taller than Kappa.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: Carries Kappa this way when he deduces that the two of them are at the lair of a Mini-God and shows no real fear of the situation, Siren scoops him up to hurry them away.
  • Parental Substitute: Comes to view Pim as a positive mother figure during their journey together, helping him heal from the pain caused by his own mother.
  • Pretty Boy: Much like Kappa.
  • Prophecy Twist: The entirety of Season 1 is centered around the Shark People's prophecy that Siren, the unscarred prince, must kill the Beacon to save his people from dying out, which is highlighted in all other sharks are born with scars. It's revealed that Susca changed the prophecy to this, the original prophecy is that The Beacon is to kill the unscarred prince to fulfill the Shark People's prophecy.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Especially after becoming official, Siren and Kappa have a very physically affectionate relationship with each other, in part of it is to ensure their new hearts become one with them.
  • Straight Gay: Aside from his obvious attraction to Kappa, his own mother says "he's not interested in princesses."
  • Took a Level in Badass: After learning combat with Pagoon, he becomes a much better fighter.
  • Violently Protective Boyfriend: As Tunny learns the hard way in Episode 130, when he called Kappa useless while shaking Siren's hand, Siren squeezes his arm so hard that he cracks his metal bangles and asks if he was mean to him, looking as intimidating as his animal basis is; Tunny quickly changes his tune after learning he's The Beacon's boyfriend.
