Captain Chuck Simian
The leader of the Space Monkeys. He was once an ordinary chimpanzee sent into space before the " " found him and uplifted his intelligence and did the same to four other primates to create a team capable of thwarting the evil of Lord Nebula.
- Apes in Space: He was originally a chimp shot into space on a rocket ship.
- Deadpan Snarker: Quite often has a sardonic remark about whatever he's dealing with.

- Ship Tease: Mutual attraction is sometimes implied between him and Shao Lin.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: According to "Mind Over Monkey", his worst fear is letting his team down.
Shao Lin
A Chinese golden monkey who was worshiped as a goddess at the Buddhist temple she lived at before becoming part of the Space Monkeys.
- Action Girl: She is a woman who can fight very well.
- All Asians Know Kung Fu: She's the only Asian member of the team, and she's a skilled martial artist.
- Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Her worshippers thought she was doing this when she got abducted into space.
- Lady of War: She's a formidable fighter who manages to be graceful as well.
- Meaningful Name: Her name refers to Shaolin Kung Fu, indicating that she's a martial artist from Asia.
- Non-Mammal Mammaries: Of the "non-human mammal with humanlike mammaries" variety. It's not a side effect of the uplifting either; the pilot shows she already had them in her previous life.
- Royal "We": Initially refers to herself with plural pronouns.
- Ship Tease: Mutual attraction is sometimes implied between her and Captain Simian.
- The Smurfette Principle: She’s the only female member of Simian’s crew.

Spydor
Before joining the Space Monkeys, Spydor was a spider monkey owned by an organ grinder in New York.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: He's the smallest of the Space Monkeys, who usually teams up with Gor, the biggest team member.
- Brains and Brawn: The brains to Gor's brawn, although more in a "knows about the facts of life" way than in a "book smart" way.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: He's very chummy with Gor-illa.
- A Lizard Named "Liz": A spider monkey named Spydor.
- Mr. Vice Guy: While he's one of the good guys, he's also prone to gambling, cheating, and materialism.
- Parenthetical Swearing: His tendencies to say "monkey-loving" or "monkey-flipping" are obvious family-friendly substitutes for saying "motherfucking".
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It is revealed in the episode "Mind Over Monkey" that he is afraid of pitbulls, a fear he developed from constantly being attacked by them during his days belonging to an organ grinder.
Gor-illa
A gorilla who isn't as intelligent as the other Space Monkeys due to damaging the " "'s intelligence amplifier during his uplifting. He's very strong, but a gentle soul deep down.
- Big Guy, Little Guy: He's the biggest of the Space Monkeys, who usually teams up with Spydor, the smallest team member.
- Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Spydor's brains.
- A Dog Named "Dog": As he was a wild animal before his uplifting, he had no name, so he's simply called Gor-illa, often shortened to Gor.
- Dumb Muscle: He's incredibly strong, but also notably the least intelligent of the Space Monkeys due to his incomplete uplifting.
- Empowered Badass Normal: Or as "normal" as an Uplifted Animal can be, anyway. His strength originally was due to his being a gorilla; later on he gained a Kaiju-like form, Gormongus.
- Gentle Giant: He's a huge gorilla who's also kindly and peaceful. He notably detests violence.
- Gentle Gorilla: Despite his immense strength and lack of intelligence, he's gentle and non-violent. Except when he turns into Gormongus.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: He is close friends with Spydor.
- Hulking Out: Starting with "Gormongus", he gains the ability to increase his size and strength when enraged.
- Killer Gorilla: His "Gormongus" form is a hulking, raging brute.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes glow red whenever he's seriously angry and about to monster out.
- Superpowered Evil Side: His "Gormongus" alter ego.
- Super-Strength: Comes with being a gorilla. Later increases when he gains his Gormongus form.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He is afraid of forest fires according to "Mind Over Monkey".
Dr. Splitz/Splitzy
An orangutan with a split personality who serves as the Space Monkey's tech expert.
- Badass Bookworm: He acts mainly as a mechanic and source of Techno Babble, but he can more than hold his own in a fight.
- Dark and Troubled Past: He spent most of his life locked up in a cage, all alone. He was so lonely that he developed his split personality just to have someone to interact with.
- Erudite Orangutan: Dr. Splitz is very articulate and cultured.
- Layman's Terms: Splitzy will usually translate Dr. Splitz's Techno Babble in plain English, sometimes without realizing he's doing so in the first place.Dr. Splitz: I require sustenance. Rich, pulpy yellow fruit of the Musaceae plant, the inseed variety would be preferable. [Boing]Splitzy: Nah, I'd rather have a banana. [Boing]Dr. Splitz: That is a banana.
- Meaningful Name:: His name refers to his split personality.
- Science Foils: Dr. Splitz is a more theory-oriented Mr. Exposition; Splitzy is a skilled engineer and mechanic that can put the other's ideas in practice. Their synergy is evident in "Splitzy's Choice", where the two personalities acquire separate bodies and find out they can't function when they're not together.
- Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: In his Dr. Splitz persona.
- The Smart Guy: He's the book-smart member of the team (opposed to Spydor's street-smarts).
- Southern-Fried Genius: Splitzy has a Southern accent and is at least smart enough to cooperate and help with Dr. Splitz's inventions and plans.

- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It is revealed in "Mind Over Monkey" that Splitzy's worst fear is being locked in a cage.
Orbitron
A floating technological orb who provides the Space Monkeys with information they may need on their missions. Got damaged early in the show and now the advice he offers is a little...eccentric.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Because of Gor-illa accidentally damaging him, he's very eccentric and tends to go on bizarre tangents.
- Deadpan Snarker: A trait of his that seems to have survived the damage.
- Eccentric A.I.: After Gorr accidentally partially crushed him in a fit of anger, Orbitron has a tendancy to make deranged observations and say nonsensical non-sequiturs.
- Hover Bot: Like the name suggests, he's a floating robot sphere.
- Insufferable Genius: He was this before he was damaged, often acting snarky and condescending toward the "primates" he had to assist.
- Phrase Catcher: "Gotta get that thing fixed."
The " "
An advanced alien race who uplifted the Space Monkeys and put them together as a team so that Lord Nebula could be defeated.
- Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: They ascend to the tenth dimension after recruiting Chuck.
- Big Good: They are the ones who provided the Space Monkeys with their intelligence, ship and weapons, all so they can stop Lord Nebula from destroying the universe.
- No Name Given: The race refuses to divulge their actual name, which they claim is so complex that it "cannot be spoken or written, only thought". Instead whenever anyone refers to them, they'll just say "the ..." and letting the silence stand in for the species's name. (Which leads to the Running Gag of someone then asking "The who?")
- Sufficiently Advanced Aliens: They are highly intelligent and can create advanced technology for the Space Monkeys to use.
Lord Nebula
A powerful being who strives for ultimate power.
- Badass Cape: Wears one after taking humanoid form.

- Evil Sounds Deep: He has a sinister deep voice provided by Michael Dorn.
- Half-Human Hybrid: He's half-human, half-black hole.
- Omnicidal Maniac: Intends to destroy the universe and reshape it in his own image.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: In the Grand Finale, his attempt to gain the power he needs to destroy the universe is sabotaged by the Space Monkeys, leaving him trapped in a small glass orb.
- Star-Spangled Spandex: Under his cape, he appears to be made of blackness and stars.
Rhesus-2
A rhesus monkey converted into a cyborg with multiple interchangeable brains who does Lord Nebula's bidding.
- Apes in Space: He was a monkey sent to space in a space shuttle before Lord Nebula found him and remade him into his lackey.
- Brain Monster: Of the "exposed brain" variety. His brains belong to the "just a brain" variety, since they can move around of their own and even put up a fight ("Monkey Puzzle Man" being one of the best examples).
- Cyborg: He's a horrific mishmash of primate and machine.
- The Dog Bites Back: In the Grand Finale, he overthrows Nebula and puts him in his place after all the abuse he heaped on him throughout the series.

- Organ Autonomy: His brains can move by themselves, and even attack his enemies.
- Pungeon Master: He often makes puns about brains.
- The Starscream: One of his driving ambitions is to get out from under Nebula's control and strike out on his own.
- Who Even Needs a Brain?: He's able to function without a brain in his empty skull.
Apax
An alien crook who's as unscrupulous as they come. The Space Monkeys first came across him hosting an intergalactic tournament.
- Catchphrase: He frequently says "Only in Andromeda!"
- Expy: He has several blatant similarities with the X-Men villain Mojo. Both are morbidly obese and disreputable aliens with stalks coming out of their heads and yellow-green skin who enjoy holding people prisoner while exploiting them.
- Fat Bastard: He's obese and as reprehensible as can be.
- One-Winged Angel: He becomes gigantic near the end of his debut episode.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: In "Felonious Monks", he makes the sexist assumption that Shao Lin doesn't pose a threat to him simply because she's female.
The Glyph (Rhesus-1)
A mysterious being in black armor who has a personal vendetta towards Lord Nebula. He's actually Rhesus-2's predecessor Rhesus-1, rebuilt as a cyborg after Nebula reduced him to a bloody smear.
- Do Not Call Me "Paul": He doesn't like being addressed as Rhesus-1.
- Evil Wears Black: He wears black armor.
- Revenge Before Reason: He puts his desire of revenge against Nebula above everything else, not caring who gets hurt in the crossfire.
- Walking Spoiler: It's hard to discuss him or the episode "Rhesus Pieces" without spoiling The Reveal that he's Rhesus-2's predecessor.
- We Can Rebuild Him: After Rhesus-1 was killed by Lord Nebula, his remains were found and rebuilt into a new bionic body.
