    Jesus

Jesus Christ

Portrayed by: Gerald "Slink" Johnson

God's only begotten son, in the flesh. And he's black. Jesus is an easygoing, jolly fellow who loves everyone unconditionally and loves a good blunt.

  • All-Loving Hero: There isn't a hateful bone in his body. Did you expect any different from Jesus Christ?
  • Badass Pacifist: He very rarely resorts to any semblance of violence. When he is forced to slug Trigger with a rock, he heals him shortly after.
  • The Big Guy: In height only; he towers over many of the cast. "Slink" Johnson stands at a whopping 6'7".
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: This is how his moral code comes across sometimes. When Trigger and Spider shoot at him and the crew, he talks them down and heals Trigger. He'll also help with Fish's schemes, using his powers to break locks and such, but won't fix Jason's shoes when they get caked in horse manure, as "[he knows] how Pops feels about vanity".
  • Crazy Homeless People: This is how he looks to Vic, Dianne, and just about anyone who doesn't know him personally.
  • Divine Race Lift: It's Jesus Christ, but an African-American stoner.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: If he doesn't provide anyone with some sort of instant gratification or use his powers to help with someone's selfish desires, he often gets dismissed as being stingy.
  • Erudite Stoner: He smokes a ton of weed and doesn't waste an opportunity to be philosophical.
  • In-Series Nickname: "G" to his friends, "Con Man" to Vic, "Jesús Negro" to the Cholos.
  • Healing Hands: One of his powers. He heals Trigger shortly after pelting a rock at him in self-defense.
  • Jesus Was Way Cool: Jesus is just a jolly stoner who wants peace on Earth.
  • Lazy Bum: Averted for the most part. You'd probably expect a stoner to be one but Jesus is often the one pep-talking his friends into putting in work, as seen with the community garden, of which he was the one pulling most of the weight.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Seasons 1 and 2 leave it semi-ambiguous whether or not Jesus really has magical powers or all of his miracles are some form of Contrived Coincidence. Season 3 confirms that it is indeed magic.
  • Nice Guy: As expected from Jesus Christ. No matter how people treat him, he still loves them.
  • One Head Taller: This is usually how he looks compared to most characters. One cop in "Smokin', Drinkin', and Chillin'" even had to ride his neck just to arrest him.

    Fish

"Fish"

Portrayed by: Andra Fuller

An ex-convict who lives in Vic's complex. He is usually broke which prompts him to come up with a plethora of get-rich-quick schemes with Jesus' help. Unfortunately, Jesus' morality and Vic's interference often make things go south.

  • The Big Guy: He can be considered the real one of the crew, as he's the one toting guns and doing the dirty work.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Convict" to Vic. "Fish" itself is one, obviously.
  • Loveable Rogue: He's the one always resorting to violence and criminal acts, but that's his appeal, other than..
  • Mr. Fanservice: ..his extremely attractive appearance. He and Ms. Tudi use this to their full advantages in Season 2 when he becomes a male stripper.
  • Put on a Bus: In Season 3. He apparently gets a job working on a pipeline so he presumably doesn't need to pull crazy schemes anymore.

    Boonie

Dabundè "Boonie" Johnson

Portrayed by: Corey Holcomb

One of Jesus' friends and Ms. Tudi's son. He is often derided by her for being too similar to his father, being a fat, lazy bum who constantly gets himself in trouble. He has an on-and-off relationship with his baby mama Shalinka, but treats their son and daughter very well.

  • Big Fun: He's a big, fat guy who's friendly and easygoing. Most of his comedy comes from his weight.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mostly due to his mother being hard on his case. He is endlessly insulted and belittled by her, and often finds himself in trouble when going along with her, Jesus, and/or Fish's schemes.
  • Good Parents: Compared to Shalinka, Boonie treats his kids well and personally gives them their child support money instead of her. They clearly have nothing but love and respect for him as a result.
  • Hidden Depths: He is a fat, lazy oaf, but he evidently takes good care of his children despite his overall poor relationship with his ex.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Boonie". Even his mom refers to him as such.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Only the agents who come to arrest him in "I Gave at the Playground" refer to him by his real name, naturally.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Shalinka. Overall, he can barely stand her, but they have a bit of Ship Tease.

    Trayvon

Trayvon

Portrayed by: Andrew Bachelor

A friend of Jesus and a huge geek. He sticks out like a sore thumb in the group of misfits but is never discriminated for it and is accepted as one of the crew. He is often called-upon to help with the technological and mathematical aspects of their schemes.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: It's implied that he is much younger than his friends when Fish tries to stop Shalinka from beating him by calling him a "kid".
  • Butt-Monkey: He is sometimes insulted or manhandled for being a nerd. He even died in "Janky Cable", thankfully being resurrected by Jesus.
  • Captain Obvious: Some of his cringeworthy jokes come from pointing out the obvious.
  • Cringe Comedy: His attempts at humor which include some sort of geeky joke, pointing out the obvious, or just parroting someone come across as this.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Tray", occasionally.
  • Put on a Bus: In Season 3. Apparently he and Maggie "moved onto better lives".

    Maggie

"Maggie"/"Mags"

Portrayed by: Kali Hawk

Another one of Jesus' friends. She happily engages in the criminal activities of the crew but isn't as malicious about it as Fish.

    Jason
Portrayed by: Antwon Tanner

Another one of Jesus' friends. He is dating Dianne, a detective, which sometimes interferes with his hanging out with the crew and drives a wedge in his relationship with her.

The Complex

    Vic

Victor

Portrayed by: Charlie Murphy

The manager of the complex, who is consistently annoyed by his tenant, Fish's antics, especially ones that involve Jesus, who he believes is some insane homeless con man manipulating his friends. He's always plotting (usually with Lloyd) to bring down Jesus and Fish's operations.

  • Agent Scully: He is quick to dismiss Jesus' miracles and entire identity as some sort of weird homeless roleplaying cult leader breaking the law.
  • Big Bad: Usually.
  • Expy: He's basically Squidward as an apartment complex manager.
  • Hero Antagonist: He's a law-abiding landlord trying to interfere with the often-criminal schemes of an erratic homeless guy and his ex-con friend.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Charlie Murphy's unfortunate passing naturally wraps up his storyline on the show, in which Vic passes away in Season 3 and goes to Heaven.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He's usually seen in some sort of snazzy shirt and slacks or suit with some jewelry. His B-plot in "The Shit Heist" revolves around his expensive slip- excuse me, loafers going missing, which he thinks Fish stole.
  • Ship Tease: With Ms. Tudi in "Fried Green Tomatoes". Subverted since she's intentionally getting him high to lower his guard, but they seemed to have some genuine chemistry.

    Lloyd

Lloyd

Portrayed by: John Witherspoon

A homeless guy who often loiters in Vic's complex. He specializes in taking many odd jobs for a cheap fix of money, beer, of both. Oftentimes, Vic begrudgingly conspires with him to spy on Jesus and Fish and take them down. Almost just as often, he hangs around Jesus and his crew in an attempt to exploit his divine power for his personal gain.

  • Crazy Homeless People: A blatant example compared to Jesus, who is only thought to be one.
  • Expy: As expected from an Aaron McGruder work, he is basically Robert Freeman and Mr. Jones as an erratic homeless bum.
  • Gasshole: A Running Gag is his flatulence and how much he stinks consistently.
  • Lazy Bum: As another contrast from Jesus, Lloyd is very lazy and often wants instant gratification. However, his many odd jobs imply that he has some semblance of a work ethic if he's that desperate. Double Subverted when he lies about doing work, such as when he pretended to tail Jesus so he can continue his "lineman" job.
  • Loveable Rogue: He's a homeless bum who accepts employment from anyone willing to pay him in cash, food, or a place to sleep. His crazy antics are what makes him so entertaining.
  • Toilet Humour: Many gags revolve around him relieving himself in public places or farting.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: In his own words..
"That negro (Jesus) ain't done shit for me. He ain't bought me no car, he ain't paid my rent, he's stingy!"

Other Characters

    Ms. Tudi

Tudi Johnson

Portrayed by: Angela Gibbs

Boonie's mother, of whom he doesn't have the most loving relationship with. Him and his friends usually go to her for advice on how to pull their criminal schemes, and occasionally to borrow money and/or firepower for her.

  • Abusive Parents: A good half of her screentime is dedicated to berating and insulting Boonie.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: There are times where she genuinely seems concerned for Boonie's safety or wants to protect him from making dumb decisions.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: A few of her guns are gold-plated.
  • Ship Tease: She was just manipulating Vic, but they did seem to have some sort of chemistry when he was on the green tomatoes.
  • Tough Love: Some of her criticisms of Boonie come from him just making poor decisions and being a Lazy Bum.

    Dianne

Dianne

Portrayed by: Valenzia Algarin

Jason's girlfriend, who is also a detective. This is what jeopardizes their relationship, as she disapproves of him hanging out with "homeless dudes"; she is especially suspicious of Jesus and wants him to stay away from Jason.

  • Spicy Latina: She's Afro-Latina, very attractive, and a seasoned detective who is extremely protective of Jason.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Downplayed. She isn't violent but she is clearly distrustful of Jesus and is always warning him to stay away from Jason.

    Trigger and Spider

"Trigger" and "Spider"

Portrayed by: Carlos Acuña and Marcelo Olivas (respectively)

Two Cholo Gangbangers who claim the territory of which the lot Jesus attempts to convert into a community garden is situated in. They attempt to extort the crew by making them "rent" the lot for $600 a month, later $1200 after they hear about the green tomatoes (which they understandably think is weed), but eventually come around and form an alliance with Jesus and his friends.

  • The Cartel: The gangbanger type. The very first thing they do is try to extort Jesus and his crew.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: They're basically the second Big Bad to Vic for the first half of Season 1 until they form an alliance with Jesus in "The Other Shoe Drops".
  • Heel–Face Turn: In "The Other Shoe Drops", the Cholos squash the beef with Jesus and his crew and form a genuine friendship, helping tend to the garden and even offering protection.
  • Neighbourhood-Friendly Gangsters: As of "The Other Shoe Drops", they help out with the garden, which provides a plethora of fresh, healthy food for the community for no charge.
  • Pet the Dog: Helping tend to the garden and providing protection to it and Jesus' crew definitely counts.

    Shalinka

Shalinka

Portrayed by: Dominique Witten

Boonie's ex-girlfriend and the mother of their kids. She and Boonie do not get along at all but it's clear that she misses him, at least based on the idea that she can't find a better man.

  • Amicable Exes: Averted. She and Boonie cannot stand each other but she clearly still has feelings for him.
  • Ascended Extra: To help fill in the extensive missing cast, she becomes a main character in Season 3.
  • Fat Bitch: Most of her screentime involves her being unpleasant and confrontational.
  • Hypocrite: She chastises Boonie for not paying child support even though, up to a certain point, he's always paid. There's also the fact that when she'd get the money directly, she'd spend it on herself rather than the kids.
  • It's All About Me: She wants to get back together with Boonie for a sense of security. She is also known to spend his child support on things for herself (like weave), to the point where Boonie decides to give the kids the money directly in secret.
  • Tsundere: She is actively bitter and hostile towards Boonie but she admits to Jesus that she still has feelings for him.
